I know it's very much not the same thing but SMOSH GAMES just played a game of Cheaters Monopoly where you can attempt to cheat in certain ways and people can call you out but if you cheat and then someone rolls the dice you got away with it and get a reward. Back in Highschool i often brought a deck of cards to school. Usually if i got some free time I'd bust it out and play solitaire. Did it every now and then. Eventually people asked me if I knew any magic tricks, and well, I did (partially some from watching scam stuff) so I'd do a trick or two. Well eventually i started do crazier tricks because the entire time I was using a marked deck. No one could figure it out and the marks were extremely subtle. My math teacher figured something was up but wasn't sure and asked if he could look at the cards. I agreed and he knew it had to be marked but didn't know what the tell was so he said "I'll buy you drink (vending machine at highschool) and give you another deck of cards IF you let me have these and tell me the trick". I had another marked deck so i said sure and told him. He then said "I'm going to have a fun round at poker this weekend." He used it for a couple rounds and then let everyone in on the secret and returned the winnings and went on with the actual game. Everyone had a laugh about.
I suppose you could plant a marked deck at your friend's house and then take advantage of it years later, but wouldn't it be even more hilarious to wait for them to get a good hand, act suspicious of their good fortune, then turn it around and accuse THEM of trying to take advantage of a marked deck?

Even when playing with my closest friends, I always use something like an upside down joker on the bottom of the deck. Eliminates that bottom deal, and also means no-one sneaks a look at one card that (shouldn't) possibly appear in that round
Thats what a greek deal is for, actually thats even easier to cheat then, cause it helps with the sounds. So a greek deal is the 51 card taken instead of the top or second.
I've worked in casinos for over ten years and dealt poker for nearly 7 years, and I've learned a bit here. But the number one thing we look out for is nail marking the cards, as someone would look at their hand and peal them up they dig their thumbnail into the back of the card and on a high gloss set of bees it's easy to see the shadow of the nail mark. Everytime we change out dealers and periodically through the down we tilt our head and slide the cards as we wash them. Simultaneously checking the backs and counting the stub to check if they are all there. But the number one advantage play is to try to break the flow of the game and bet out of turn or "accidentally" bet to much in order to angle shoot and get info

@@plushtheotterTheoretically, if you were playing against an opponent playing artifact removal and you know there's a Doomsday on top of your deck, it would be advised to not play out the Lotus so you could guarantee firing off the Doomsday the next turn. The odds of this are slim, as whatever deck you'd be playing against in Vintage (the only format where Black Lotus is legal) would surely have proactive ways to punish you for having to wait a turn, but it is an example of a situation where it would be advisable to hold a Lotus.
So me and my buddies get together and play cards a lot. A few of us are a little handsy with the cards, and we all know it. So at some point, one of us will just start cheating and the others will either join us or try to nail the ones that are cheating. Eventually it devolves into us drunken bunch of hooligans laughing incessantly around the table and doing card tricks before we finally switch from poker to blackjack. Then we switch back and the cycle repeats. We don't play for real money, BTW. We just use chips. It's all in good fun.
Elimating the different hand positions for different kinds of cheat dealing is fairly easy. Just figure out a way to have every false deal and normal deal look the same with the same grip
When I had a summer job in a butcher shop, I bet my workmate a week of pay that he couldn't reach the ribeye on the top shelf of the walk-in without a stepladder. But he said the steaks were too high. :(
i cheated at poker once just to see if i could. i hid several aces (i think it was 3 aces of different suits) in my belt. they were under my shirt but tucked behind my belt. the whole game i played with my hands close to the edge of the table. when i wanted to deploy the hidden aces, i would dump cards into my lap and pull out one or two while someone else was drawing cards for their hand (5 card draw). i never got caught somehow lol but i also don't remember it really making a difference. it's basically you win one hand, and then you have dirty cards in your lap that you don't want found, and the deck now has a bunch of extra aces meaning someone could be dealt the same ace twice. i just go lucky and no one hand had duplicate aces. and don't worry it was a game for fun with no stakes
One of my college friends fathers is a wheelchair user, he won't tell anyone how he ended up needing the wheelchair other than; "Well, I walked into a friendly game of poker... and I haven't walked again since!"
It might actually be fun game mode where the rule is that you can cheat as much as you like, anyway you possible can figure out. But if someone calls you out, then you get some sort of penalty. And maybe if you make false claim about cheating you get penalty instead. Tho they would need to be honest about it. Maybe with some extra house rules that you can't have extra deck/cards and you can't bring extra chips or anything like that. But you could for example pocket a card from previous round. And at the end everyone reveals all the cheats they did for points or something.
I learned from, and was playing Euchre with, my cousins like 15 years ago and was told (perhaps jokingly?) that part of the rules were to try to cheat.. well, in Euchre you play with 9 10 J Q K A and there are 4 players each dealt 5 cards, when I was dealer after dealing I'd set the extra 4 cards down to the side, play my first card and if I didn't like my hand I'd "trade" it out with the remaining 4 cards from the pack by setting my hand down by the remaining cards while we were bantering or visiting and I'd just pick up the wrong set.. didn't always help a lot but if I had a bad hand anyway it could make a pretty good difference hehe.. I don't remember how many times I actually did it, half dozen or so maybe but I was caught by my aunt sitting behind me watching my hand and she was like "didn't you just have?...ooooh.. I saw that.." let the hand play out and laughingly explained what happened and everyone that heard about it said "I've never seen anyone cheat like that before..." I've seen a couple of them try it since but only once or twice. anyway, I've never done it since but EVERY time I sit down to play it's mentioned (even after 15 years!) and they don't let me set the extra pack cards anywhere close to me, set them in the middle or something.. . hehe... talk about making an impression.. =P
A game I used to play with my cousins was Cheat. simple but fun to break up the more serious games. deal the full deck amongst the players, ace of spades starts. placing the card face down on the table announces the card "one ace". to the left then can increment or decrement, and you can put down multiple cards, so the next play could be "two kings" or "one two", also face down. winner is first to be out of cards. of course, you dont have to put down the card or number of cards you say, cant be seen. if you suspect someone of cheating, accuse them. if they were, they add the deck to their hand. if your wrong, you collect the deck. any type of cheating goes. lying, slight of hand, any deception you can think of. Quite good fun. also handy to learn the tells of the other players.
I've played a fun game of Uno once with about 15-20 people using a couple of decks combined and cheating was allowed but if caught then you'd have a penalty draw. Eventually I noticed people were passing around cards to make sure most had a +2 card in their hand for the eventual chain that was going to make someone have to draw like +50. After I realized what was going on I would offer to shuffle and cop a couple +2 cards off the bottom for myself lol.
@@arjovenzia I've most commonly heard of that game as Bullshit or BS, when I learned we would say BoyScouts to not get in the trouble with the adults lol while playing on camping trips. A marked deck makes you an absolute god and is probably the best way to cheat in this game, but my second favorite would be to play the correct hand of 3 six's or something but add an extra 2 cards to the pile to dump dead cards that would screw me later. Even if they call BS on you, then they would only turn over the top 3 cards and wouldn't even know about your lies.
We used to have an unofficial game mode in MTG where you could cheat as much as you wanted. If your opponent could spot the cheat, you instantly lost. Lots of ridiculous things happening.
I feel this is the best place to tell this story. So. 3 people from my youth group and I were playing some card game (that I don't recall the name of atm) that you played in pairs, and someone would draw and then pass and people would keep passing around, and the point of the game was for you or someone else to get four of a kind. (I may be mincing the actual play rules but 1. You did play as a team of 2. 2. The goal was for either of you to get the 4 of a kind.) Once one player got the 4 of a kind, they had to signal so the other player could call... it wasn't 4 of a kind but they yelled I think the name of the game. If the other team sorted out that your signal meant what it meant, and called you on it, they won. Anyways. Me and this one guy were were playing as a team against some other people. The other guy comes up with this signal that if he gets it, (we were in the common room) or if I get it, we were gonna ask one of the adults what was for lunch (it was a little bit before lunch too so that question would not have raised suspicion.) Anyways. we play for a while... and I'm not paying as much attention and then I hear him say it. Before he even finished, I just look up, say the word and we win instantly. Our opponents were so confused too. It was gr8
So what Brian is mentioning about Bicycle cards' boarder being more noticeable when dealing seconds is a legitimate reason to the design on the back of Bicycle Playing Cards. Older card decks used to use a full printed back, checker board, diamonds, some geometric pattern to create an obscuring design so the card can't be seen through if held to the light (an issue with very old cards that used to be much thinner) was pretty bog standard to playing cards. No need for anything special right? Well when dealing seconds and cheating became rather problematic in games of cards companies like Bicycle actually created the bordered style you see on most modern card packs today, The back of a bicycle card while iconic also makes it VERY HARD to deal seconds without a LOT of practice or a really unaware table of players. Today it's not as helpful, the design is obviously still a great built in safety against novice cheaters but it's by no means foolproof. All information is from personal research, experience, and stories from old gamblers, please take this as fact at ones own risk
When my roommate and I play Magic, he always tries to stack his deck, but I've been aware of it for years, and he's aware that I'm aware. However, when he stacks the deck, he only puts in the cards that he wants in his opening hand, as it's often the most important. What I do to combat this is simple: Cut the deck randomly. Maybe I'll split it in half. Maybe I'll take the bottom 7 cards and put em on top. Maybe I'll take the top card and put it on the bottom. He never knows how I'm gonna cut the deck, so he can't actually prepare for it, resulting in whatever he set up to inevitably fail. He still beats me every time, but we do have fun with me ruining his opening hand at the very least.
Bottom deals...a classic since Sam Elliott called the dealer out in Part 1 of The Sacketts. "That was just about the best damn' bottom deal I've ever seen." Didn't end too well for the dealer, I recall.
Ok so quick story, I had made my own set of marked cards. And I didn’t tell anyone but they were sitting in my pile of decks. We decide to have a game night and I tell my roommate to grab a deck thinking he’d pick any of the other options. He didn’t, and I tried to play it cool for a while but eventually they rest caught on and I may have gotten hit with an empty vodka bottle. So, do this at your own discretion

I might be willing to come help you with an episode on juice decks. I've been making them for about 20 years at this point. I actually have invented new versions of the juice that nobody else has caught up with. BTW, anyone who has seen Sanford & Son has likely seen the type of deck that used those glasses.
That last one immediately made me think of my glasses which filter just a tad bit of blue light (as well as certain laser safety glasses which can be really really good at filtering only very narrow bands of colors) which could make the markings basically undetectable to anyone not also wearing blue filtering glasses :D
My type of advantage play is I mathematically simulated all possible roles in monopoly and remembered which properties people are most likely to end up on. Because I'm a massive nerd and this was a math challenge they gave me in school
I remember when Brian Brushwood did a Scam School episode about the perfectly stacked deck. There were like... only four deck layouts in existence where, no matter how the deck is cut, the dealer wins the hand. It was the video that got me hooked on the 'shwood.
I remember there was this one time I went up to a magician after a show and it led to me getting his business card and the way he gave it to me was he took out a really tiny strip of toilet paper from his pocket (used from a previous trick) he then took out a lighter lit the toilet paper on fire and boom there’s his business card suddenly in his hand and in that moment I was just sitting there amazed at how this playing card sized business card came from a little cigarette sized piece of toilet paper
Damn, I've rigged so many card games before but every technique used here is something I never thought of, other than bottom deal. I specifically deal from the top in a way that makes the cards scrape against the deck to make basically the same sound so my bottom deal sounds the same. The sound is still slightly different, but I have never had anyone pick up on that.
My friends and I in highschool used to play Uno at lunch everyday. Sometimes I'd put 2 cards together and play that. Especially if I had a TON of cards

I'm a professional poker dealer. I do NOT know how to manipulate the deck. Nor do any of my coworkers. Since casino dealers are under state regulations and are under constant surveillance, it's really a bad idea. Confederates or collusion are hard to detect; BUT IRL, in most cases, friends rarely get seated at the same table, and dealers are irrelevant, we're changing out in 30 min. If you're trying to get rich because of a confederate dealer... good luck with that. The notion itself makes me chuckle. Re: Withholding chips, we call that either, "going south", i.e. removing chips from the action, or "capping", adding chips that weren't there before in the original bet. In other words, a guy bets "all in" with 3 hundred, another player goes all in with more to shut out everyone else. Most of us know roughly how much money each player has, a sudden boon in resources is going to get a "floor" (supervisor) call". Most of these cheats would only work in a private or "home game". If you play poker at an actual casino, you can rest assured your bets are safe, and win or lose, your bets are safe and the play is fair.
You guys remember that video you did on the ole' Razzle Dazzle? The gambling scam? Totally useful, made a bunch of money scamming the local dice game crew.
(Card counting is also advantaged play, its just thinking more about the game. Casinos often back you off because of it (limits you to the lowest bet, does not let you play blackjack, or bans you from the casino), and that's stupid, because it's like banning someone from playing chess, because they were thinking too much
Excellent video, but I think that people have long known what kind of sound a bottom deal and what a normal deal makes and practice so that it sounds almost identical.I learned these techniques from Daniel Madison, and in the masterclass we practice making each division look and sound the same.
Ever since I learned card magic, I handle cards differently than everyone else. Like he said, we Asians have a different way of holding the deck. So every time I hold it in mechanic's grip, they'd automatically be suspicious, even when we're playing a regular game LOL... That's why I try to hold them the conventional Asian way when doing card tricks.
Not always!! There’s some amazing ways we can alter a deck or mark it and then RESEAL it so it looks like it’s never been opened! We use sticker seals just like the ones supplied by the card manufacturer and even reapply the cellophane

A game I used to play with my cousins was Cheat. simple but fun to break up the more serious games. deal the full deck amongst the players, ace of spades starts. placing the card face down on the table announces the card "one ace". to the left then can increment or decrement, and you can put down multiple cards, so the next play could be "two kings" or "one two", also face down. winner is first to be out of cards. of course, you dont have to put down the card or number of cards you say, cant be seen. if you suspect someone of cheating, accuse them. if they were, they add the deck to their hand. if your wrong, you collect the deck. any type of cheating goes. lying, slight of hand, any deception you can think of. Quite good fun. also handy to learn the tells of the other players.
I've played a fun game of Uno once with about 15-20 people using a couple of decks combined and cheating was allowed but if caught then you'd have a penalty draw. Eventually I noticed people were passing around cards to make sure most had a +2 card in their hand for the eventual chain that was going to make someone have to draw like +50. After I realized what was going on I would offer to shuffle and cop a couple +2 cards off the bottom for myself lol.
@@arjovenzia I've most commonly heard of that game as Bullshit or BS, when I learned we would say BoyScouts to not get in the trouble with the adults lol while playing on camping trips.
A marked deck makes you an absolute god and is probably the best way to cheat in this game, but my second favorite would be to play the correct hand of 3 six's or something but add an extra 2 cards to the pile to dump dead cards that would screw me later. Even if they call BS on you, then they would only turn over the top 3 cards and wouldn't even know about your lies.
We used to have an unofficial game mode in MTG where you could cheat as much as you wanted. If your opponent could spot the cheat, you instantly lost. Lots of ridiculous things happening.
I would love to see you guys have Richard Turner on. Jason would be even more blown away seeing what he can do with cards

I feel this is the best place to tell this story.
So. 3 people from my youth group and I were playing some card game (that I don't recall the name of atm) that you played in pairs, and someone would draw and then pass and people would keep passing around, and the point of the game was for you or someone else to get four of a kind. (I may be mincing the actual play rules but 1. You did play as a team of 2. 2. The goal was for either of you to get the 4 of a kind.) Once one player got the 4 of a kind, they had to signal so the other player could call... it wasn't 4 of a kind but they yelled I think the name of the game. If the other team sorted out that your signal meant what it meant, and called you on it, they won.
Anyways. Me and this one guy were were playing as a team against some other people. The other guy comes up with this signal that if he gets it, (we were in the common room) or if I get it, we were gonna ask one of the adults what was for lunch (it was a little bit before lunch too so that question would not have raised suspicion.)
Anyways. we play for a while... and I'm not paying as much attention and then I hear him say it. Before he even finished, I just look up, say the word and we win instantly. Our opponents were so confused too. It was gr8

So what Brian is mentioning about Bicycle cards' boarder being more noticeable when dealing seconds is a legitimate reason to the design on the back of Bicycle Playing Cards. Older card decks used to use a full printed back, checker board, diamonds, some geometric pattern to create an obscuring design so the card can't be seen through if held to the light (an issue with very old cards that used to be much thinner) was pretty bog standard to playing cards. No need for anything special right? Well when dealing seconds and cheating became rather problematic in games of cards companies like Bicycle actually created the bordered style you see on most modern card packs today, The back of a bicycle card while iconic also makes it VERY HARD to deal seconds without a LOT of practice or a really unaware table of players. Today it's not as helpful, the design is obviously still a great built in safety against novice cheaters but it's by no means foolproof.

When my roommate and I play Magic, he always tries to stack his deck, but I've been aware of it for years, and he's aware that I'm aware. However, when he stacks the deck, he only puts in the cards that he wants in his opening hand, as it's often the most important. What I do to combat this is simple: Cut the deck randomly. Maybe I'll split it in half. Maybe I'll take the bottom 7 cards and put em on top. Maybe I'll take the top card and put it on the bottom. He never knows how I'm gonna cut the deck, so he can't actually prepare for it, resulting in whatever he set up to inevitably fail.
He still beats me every time, but we do have fun with me ruining his opening hand at the very least.
I'll have to be sure to remember what Brian said next time I'm gambling with my friends:

Ok so quick story, I had made my own set of marked cards. And I didn’t tell anyone but they were sitting in my pile of decks. We decide to have a game night and I tell my roommate to grab a deck thinking he’d pick any of the other options. He didn’t, and I tried to play it cool for a while but eventually they rest caught on and I may have gotten hit with an empty vodka bottle.

There's A LOT of stuff you can hide when manipulating cards just by generally being a loudmouth and not shutting up for half a second.

That last one immediately made me think of my glasses which filter just a tad bit of blue light (as well as certain laser safety glasses which can be really really good at filtering only very narrow bands of colors) which could make the markings basically undetectable to anyone not also wearing blue filtering glasses :D

My type of advantage play is I mathematically simulated all possible roles in monopoly and remembered which properties people are most likely to end up on. Because I'm a massive nerd and this was a math challenge they gave me in school
I remember when Brian Brushwood did a Scam School episode about the perfectly stacked deck. There were like... only four deck layouts in existence where, no matter how the deck is cut, the dealer wins the hand. It was the video that got me hooked on the 'shwood.

I remember there was this one time I went up to a magician after a show and it led to me getting his business card and the way he gave it to me was he took out a really tiny strip of toilet paper from his pocket (used from a previous trick) he then took out a lighter lit the toilet paper on fire and boom there’s his business card suddenly in his hand and in that moment I was just sitting there amazed at how this playing card sized business card came from a little cigarette sized piece of toilet paper

Damn, I've rigged so many card games before but every technique used here is something I never thought of, other than bottom deal. I specifically deal from the top in a way that makes the cards scrape against the deck to make basically the same sound so my bottom deal sounds the same. The sound is still slightly different, but I have never had anyone pick up on that.
My friends and I in highschool used to play Uno at lunch everyday. Sometimes I'd put 2 cards together and play that. Especially if I had a TON of cards

I'm a professional poker dealer. I do NOT know how to manipulate the deck. Nor do any of my coworkers. Since casino dealers are under state regulations and are under constant surveillance, it's really a bad idea.
Confederates or collusion are hard to detect; BUT IRL, in most cases, friends rarely get seated at the same table, and dealers are irrelevant, we're changing out in 30 min. If you're trying to get rich because of a confederate dealer... good luck with that. The notion itself makes me chuckle.
Re: Withholding chips, we call that either, "going south", i.e. removing chips from the action, or "capping", adding chips that weren't there before in the original bet. In other words, a guy bets "all in" with 3 hundred, another player goes all in with more to shut out everyone else. Most of us know roughly how much money each player has, a sudden boon in resources is going to get a "floor" (supervisor) call".
Most of these cheats would only work in a private or "home game".
If you play poker at an actual casino, you can rest assured your bets are safe, and win or lose, your bets are safe and the play is fair.

(Card counting is also advantaged play, its just thinking more about the game. Casinos often back you off because of it (limits you to the lowest bet, does not let you play blackjack, or bans you from the casino), and that's stupid, because it's like banning someone from playing chess, because they were thinking too much

Excellent video, but I think that people have long known what kind of sound a bottom deal and what a normal deal makes and practice so that it sounds almost identical.I learned these techniques from Daniel Madison, and in the masterclass we practice making each division look and sound the same.

Ever since I learned card magic, I handle cards differently than everyone else. Like he said, we Asians have a different way of holding the deck. So every time I hold it in mechanic's grip, they'd automatically be suspicious, even when we're playing a regular game LOL... That's why I try to hold them the conventional Asian way when doing card tricks.

Not always!! There’s some amazing ways we can alter a deck or mark it and then RESEAL it so it looks like it’s never been opened! We use sticker seals just like the ones supplied by the card manufacturer and even reapply the cellophane
