- A Crane, a Grid and some Snow at Carlisle!
14 March 23
Now in the second of two weeks of total blockade at Carstairs, Avanti and TPE are terminating their Anglo-Scottish trains at carlisle whilst Avanti is running Voyagers and ScotRail their usual 156s over the Sou'Western via Dumfries.
Some intermodals are running via Dumfries as are the occasional Nuclear Flask train as in my last video.
There's still a good variety of freight heading south. On the morning engineer's train to Tyne Yard, the load was a Kirov crane belonging to Volker Rail. Whilst a class 70 hauled the Logs to Chirk, a class 56 had been put behind the Class 70 on the Longport stone train - the 56 being hauled - no noise from its engine!
The DB Cargo-operated engineers trains to and from Millerhill have been running via Newcastle - on the 14th it was actually a DRS turn.
Later in the afternoon the northerly wind brought really dark clouds and for about half an hour it snowed. Not a fantastic amount in Carlisle but I was told that it was deep only 10 or so miles east.

Enjoyed that, thanks for braving the cold.
Thanks!
Lovely images with trains! Good work! Thumbs Up
Greetings from Ireland
Andrew
Thanks Andrew
Well, Leslie... not only did we get a great mix of freight, passenger, liveries, and locos, we got a bit of a weather mix, too! Hey, if I get my Avanti's and TPEs while in the comfort of my living room watching the telly, I am a happy guy! You just make sure you are safe and warm and staying healthy providing us with these great videos! Take care! Cheeers!
Thanks Anthony, it added to the variety didn't it!
That crane is one very impressive piece of equipment - must be tricky operating it under the catenary. Liked the snow scenes although I'm probably glad that I wasn't there for them - growing old, I'm afraid!
Thankfully the roads were clear - I think it had gone in the city and westwards within an hour
Another great video Leslie fantastic mix going through Carlisle 👍
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Thanks, you too!
Great video again Les. Looking forward to getting back up to the Citadel when the work at Carstairs is finished.
Thanks! At the moment for steam its a case of being out on the lineside or maybe Appleby when they run, but given the right times, Carlisle is having its moments. No diversions appear to be planned on weekdays now but we shall see
Wonderfull video Les as always , some good captures & some good veriety as well , loved the super voyages leaving p 1 in all the snow that was an swesome catch hope you maneged to keep warm matey finding time to nip into the cafe a get a hot drink " as you do " 🤣 once again Les thanks for sharing , stay safe a t b Syd👍
Thanks Syd. It's getting quite mild weather wise now
Great coverage 😍👌
Thanks
Brilliant video Leslie

Thanks Steve
@@LeslieGilpinRailways you're welcome
Some nice catches! The snow adding to the atmosphere
Thanks Nate!
Hi Les, I was up in Carlisle myself on the 14th, drove over the station bridge literally minutes before the thunder and snow began, station looked busy as I went over, keep up the good work
Thanks!
Nice one 👏👏
Thanks!
Grand video
👍👍😎
Thanks!
Awesome video Leslie 😊
Thanks Jorge
Great shot of the Voyager pulling out in the snow Les....
Thanks! It had been through snow on its way south through Dumfrieshire but I don't think it got that amount of a covering
Great footage les I wish I could see a 68 it’s my dream to
Thanks! They do seem to get around.
Cannot remember ever seeing an electric train in P6, great captures Les!
Not I. One has appeared in P8 too! Sadly the light didn't allow the sparks to be seen
I do like seeing snow on the tracks. Excellent videos Mr Gilpin.🙂👍
Thanks! Although it didn't last long after I left the station, it certainly added effect whilst I was there
I think I see myself at 10:34 ! I was in the camouflage coat, was a proper good day at Carlisle! Great video as always!
Aha it was you! You should have said hi!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways If I see you next time I'm there I will :)
Cheers Les, some good variety there. I remember many years ago now platform 6 would have a class 31 for Leeds and further back the Manchester Pullman would be propelled from upperby carriage depot by an 82 or 83 Electric into platform 6. A bit of useless information in an otherwise great video.
Thanks! I;d love to see electric locos waiting their turn again! Sometimes an 86 87 or 90 but we can only dream about 81-84s.
hi Les a great video as always tell you what you get a right mixture of weather at Carlisle that snow was the day before i was coming over im glad i missed the snow although we had some snow a day or so after you but it didnt stay long again we had a good mixture of freight and passenger trains hope the weather behaves itself for the next one look after yourself and stay safe my friend
Thanks John! I think rain is more likely from now on
Fantastic shot of the voyager heading north through the blizzard!
Thanks! I liked that clip too
Exciting day for you Les. The snow looked good on the front of the 66. Any snow we get now will likely bein the form of a squall and probably melted in 20-30 minutes. Our temps. are in the low to mid teens now. David.
Thanks David. In fact our temperatures have got into double figures now. That snow had gone by the time I got home, only 15 minutes away
I just love the sound of the 68s.
It's an excellent sound!
Great video les i will be in Carlisle on March 24th Peter
Hopefully this week will see things settle down with few if any weekday diversions in Scotland and Avanti and TPE running up the WCML - at least that's the theory!
Bom dia bom fim de semana ai lelie ótimo movimentação dos trem neve ❄️ ai
Thanks!
On the 14th march same day we had heavy Snow fall in workington from about 10.15 am till About 4 pm You wouldn't think it was the county
Carlisle hasn't seem much snow at all this winter. A friend out at the airport said they had up to a foot in the time the city centre got it's dusting. All gone within the hour!
Great stuff Les, liking the snow scenes, wondering how long are the diversions on for and is this why the steam today missed carlisle, Steve .
Thanks Steve. At weekends for the coming months the through platforms can be fully occupied with terminating pendos etc. Or I think thats the theory!
hi leslie very good
Thanks
Nice variety Leslie plus some of that funny white stuff, brrrrrrrrrr.
Thanks Andy. It added to the scene!
Back to near Normal soon with The Carstairs to Edinburgh section reopening allowing Avanti and Transpennine back to and from Edinburgh as of 20/03/23
I certainly hope so, although the blockade will be in place at weekends until mid May
just a little dusting of snow try going to norway in winter in a 44 ton truck you get heavy snow usualy about 16ft deep
It wasn't a lot but more than Carlisle has seen this winter!
Anybody know why 2 relatively similar intermodal trains would have 1 x 68 vs 2 x88? Is it a weight or route based thing?? Thanks
I think its whatever DRS roster for that day. With the diversions in Scotland they've been nding loco changes at Kingmoor depot but even then you might see 1 or 2 66s, one or two 68s or one or two 88s, or a mixture of 68 and 88! The double heading is often in bad weather on Shap or in Scotland but could also be moving power to and from Crewe. I need to listen more carefully on the second loco,
Typical weather patterns here. Sunshine one minute, the next - something else! I wonder why the logs weren't routed over one of the earlier crosssovers out of P3. Was there really a high incidence of DRS power, or was it just chance on your editing board?
Typically unpredictable weather! As to routing the Logs through Carlisle I guess it's down to the signaller working the station panel at the PSB. During the blockade DRS have been prominent in routing freight around by Dumfries along with DB, freightliner and GBRf have been running up the East Coast
Hope you captured the grid on the logs yesterday les .?👍
Afraid not, apart from a few hours in Dumfrieshire for the diverted freight, Friday is my 'day off'
