Hey coach...I know this is vid is 3 years old, but I wanted to tell you how awesome this video is. I just started BJJ last month. I was rolling with a 4 stripe white belt and was able to get two arms out and do the stack and pass...granted I did not do any drilling on that in class. I watched this vid several times and it just came out when the opportunity presented. Love this channel!
I watched this last night, and I applied it today against a blue belt (I’m a no stripe white belt just getting into the sport). You could tell that he was pretty annoyed, and we ended the roll in that position. I couldn’t quite get up, which is why I just watched it again to see what I might’ve missed, but I remembered, after a second, to apply all of my weight, remembering that he said you might look alright, but you’ve got to apply pressure, weight. Anyway, that’s a long winded way of saying that I’m so grateful for these videos; they’re so pinche helpful.
Great video! I will definitely try this! I would caution that both the ankles are set up perfectly to be grabbed for the sweep though. Something to watch out for. 😃👍
I’ve spent the last 4 weeks trying to accomplish breaking full guard. I’m going to try this with my rolling partner tomorrow! I’m a one stripe white belt so I definitely have a lot to learn. Thank you so much!!!!
More from broken posture please. I feel like this area of closed guard needs to get more fleshed out because most guard players basing their whole games around expecting you to try to posture up, this kind of stuff will be even more effective because their game isnt tuned for it. Their games arent tuned for it because everyone thinks it's trash, but there is more legitimacy to this stuff than people think.
love this. proper time to use this is when you get broken down not go straight to this. i done something like this, but i get into toruble when im trying to posture back up, which is pretty damn hard when they have a handle on the back of your head instead of a gi grip.
Hi Guys. Well, I actually tried it last night and while I didn't manage to get back to my feet, it did give my partner more "issues"... What I DID have a lot of success with was that utilization of weight pressure and being heavy on my sparring partner making it difficult for him to reverse position. I'm a total beginner, but it felt great to have some "control" however slight it may have been. Thanks much again Coach Tom and team!
Professor Tom I really thank you for all your effort and time making these fantastic vids. One day I hope to train with you! Thank you so much once again! Peace!
Been @ this game for 2 years now and with a good closed guard player I have a hell of a time getting out. I’ve tried it all Sao Paolo pass when my posture is broken, standing to pass, all variations of on the knees passing and even with good frames and posture I either get swept or broken down. Will give this one a shot.
Awesome as always Coach... Will be trying that technique this very evening. I'm a complete beginner in BJJ and get caught in closed guard all the time... I'll post again here with results!
Every time I stand up, my legs get grabbed. It’s not always a serious threat, but idk how to know if it is before hand, and it’s always at least bothersome to deal with. There are cases where you can control an arm and have a safer go, but I didn’t see it addressed in the video, and it’s kind of a big frustration of mine.
I'll try it. I have problems getting out of closed guard when I roll with guys, and I panic, I started not too long ago, so it is good to have a little something to help me.
Hi coach, I know this is an older video but I've just come across it. I love the escape but I have trouble with the Dummy Sweep when I come to the standing position. What can you recommend that will help my success when getting to that part of the guard break? Thanks so much for all the hard work!
It is so sad that I don’t live in Australia because I would be down at your guys place all the time working on throws, & takedowns :) Jujitsu jujitsu jujitsu fun fun fun
That was my initial thought too- I suppose this is not a position you would want to hang out it in; rather break it and go right into double-unders or step back quickly!
@Medic Engineer haha... How are you gonna "punch" or "stomp" when you're standing and are still in his guard, INSIDE his legs???? An ankle sweep happens really quickly. You crack me up, my guy.
@Medic Engineer Whatever, son. Anyone who spouts off "just punch him in the face" is a keyboard warrior. By the way... You may want to repeat grade school. Your writing is terrible. You sound like you're a 3rd grader.
On top in mma you generally are safe from bottom punches with posture. stacking like this would make you vulnerable to elbows from the bottom ala bisping vs gsp and Ortega vs that one dude lol
So when I get to the standing position I seem to get in worse trouble from them grabbing ankles and bridging how can that b prevented kinda sucks to get in a better position and end up in a worse one
Just learn balance from getting swept. Trial and error. Also learn the hack for passing the guard when they back sweep you. You’ll have to find the video but I uploaded it years ago! Turns a bad day into a great one for that situation!
Good question. The answer is balance and controlling their legs with your thigh squeeze to prevent the back sweep or open guards from developing. (-: Coach Tom Davey
Squeeze or no, won't your opponent just drop his butt, grab your ankles and just push off your thighs with his calves. You wouldn't try to get some staggered stance, dropping one leg behind and angled off while putting the other right behind more centrally? Thanks
In the Gi I can see this technique makes a lot of sense. Grabbing the belt as you get up will stop you from getting swept backwards. In no gi I wonder how you stop people from grabbing your angles and sweeping you backwards onto your bum?
I have a few videos uploaded and this topic covered in other video products of mine. Keep breaking their posture and don't let them stand! (-: Tom Davey
I used to always be the smallest and weakest at my academies growing up. Get the technique right with posts and grip fighting and practice practice practice!
If you get backswept, search youtube for my hack on countering the backsweep with a pass. Otherwise just work your balance and forward hip pressure. (-: Coach Tom Davey
I've been training for years and have always had a hard time using traditional posture up guard breaks. Once I get the legs open, I'm decent at executing traditional passing techniques from my knees. So I use guard breaks like this one, strictly to get the legs open then immediately get back down to combat stance so my partner can't cross his feet again. Point being, I put myself back on the ground before my partner can sweep me there. There are so many techniques for sweeping/tangling a standing opponent now, so I make a point to not hang out on my feet while partners establish de la rivas or x-guards. Conceptually, it's always about beating the partner to the next move (like chess).
As some have pointed out you are leaving yourself open to being swept. Just started bjj and we completed sweeps last week and the first thing I saw from this video is grabbing your ankles for the sweep. You should really talk possible counters from the ground as I wouldn't be too confident if I got swept trying this out.
I think you should at least mention the risk and counter to the lumberjack sweep. Even inexperienced bjj practitioners will reflexively go for your ankle
Totally works. It's Khabib & GSP's go-to when they're in a guy's guard. For ref, watch GSP vs. Nick Diaz. Back when I was watching it live, I kept thinking he'd get caught in an armbar or triangle, but if you're aware of what your opponent's options are in any situation, you can anticipate it and make adjustments when you feel the guy on the bottom swiveling his hips (maybe that's why it's called "getting caught" in a sub). In Khabib's last fight he added covering his opponent's face/mouth with his hand to make it even more uncomfortable. Collegiate wrestler's who transition to MMA have been pinning guys on the fence and stacking them for years. The addition of strikes makes it a lot harder for bottom guy to hit sweeps on standing opponent.
Seems like you are pinning the hips to take the opponents ability to attack, once you stand up the break has to be timely or you are vulnerable to waiter sweep counter.
There will always be moments of vulnerability in EVERY Attack. You may be surprised at how efficient this pass is once you have done it a hundred times. Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom Davey
@@TheGrapplingAcademy 6 'crying laughing' emojis ?...seriously ? hardly that funny dude aside from that, in theory this stack technique 'can' be useful if the guy in guard is quite a bit smaller than the guy breaking ...relatively equal weights, your black belts should be laughing as the smash this technique

His videos are by far the most detailed and easy understanding videos to use to help your BJJ on UA-cam imo.

The Grappling Academy Thanks ever so much for the reply Coach!
I like the theory of smashing forward and then stepping up so your totally smashing while standing. Appreciate your insight.

Great job
Hey hey Tom great explanation again good teaching
I really needed this in tonight’s class....
Worked like a charm.
Once you stand up to try and break the guard, you are vulnerable to the lumberjack sweep!!
Of course, balance is key! (-: Coach Tom Davey
Love this guy. As a big guy I find I can stack quite easily.
I really like that and can't wait to try! Thanks for sharing!
I was grappling my buddy and he has a strong full guard and I was suck there, now I’m here
Thank you for such good instruction
I will use it today in class! 😊
Thanks for that tip, Look forward to trying it.
very good.....very very good....perfect against smaller opponents who luv getting you in closed guard.

Turn your failure into a combo. Work with what you have. Predictable failure gives you an ability to predict his next move
This is really useful. Thank you.

Hi coach Tom. I’m trying to figure out how you are applying the weight while pressing forward while not getting thrown. Thanks for the tips!
pRACTICE YOUR BALANCE AND THEN CENTER YOUR HEAD OVER YOUR LEG ONCE UP TO PREVENT SWEEPS. (-: Professor Tom Davey
I've not seen this taught at our gym. I'm going to give it a try. Thx.
Great, I like it
Wouldn't you just get caught in an ankle pick sweep?
Balance and controlling their legs with your thighs is key to avoid this. (-: Coach Tom Davey

what do you do when he grabs your ankles and pushes you over with his legs taking top mount how to you avoid that

Does this leave you open to ankle sweeps that put your opponent in mount??

My partners do this annoying thjng where when i finally stand up, they grab my ankles and push me down. I don’t know if this will work with them.
Yes and if you look around you will find a video I’ve done to counter the back sweep!
Easy angle sweep
🥺
Can he take u back when u stand. Heel grab!!
I would think that would want to grab a sleeve on the way up so your ankle doesn't get grabbed.

Grab your ankles kick you on the sides to drop you and then get on top mount. Lets be more realistic and have a plan B with this type of move.

Ossssssssss!
That doesn't work. My bjj sensai slapped me bc I tried that on a purple belt and was not successful
Taught to me by a red and white coral belt. Go slap your sensei back and tell him to respect his students. 🤦🏻♂️
I dont see this working when you are leaning forward they are grabbing a collar or have an underhook. You cant pop up that fast.
