One of the main reasons why Life eternal by Mayhem is one of my favourite bm songs is because of the fact that the bass isnt just plain and boring
Great song
Varg did bass on that album
@@SeedOilFitnessOfficial exactly
@@SeedOilFitnessOfficial Without Varg black metal is not anymore what he need to be ... Hail Varg, modern black metal today is nothing more then fake deppresive deep minded people who try to create fake darkness loool.
Theres alot of good thrash, and black metal bass players but you just got to seek em out
I like the fact that you didn’t talk about bass “just being in key” with the guitars but rather have the ability to do its own thing. That’s why many people praise B. War for being a sharp and creative bassist in black metal
Exactly
B.War is more than an elite player. Huge loss for the scene. I was a diehard Mardukian and to this day, i still thinks his departure killed the band.
Hearing that bass guitar in black metal in doing it's own thing that's not too simple, but not too complicatedly technical as well is why it has its good low melodies.
It reminds me on Ulver's "I Troldskog Faren Vild" where the bass follows along with the guitars with most of the song, but at one point it does its melodic part which really stands out to be one of my favorite part on bass.
That 1st Riff is Dark Funeral in a nutshell
lol yup
This made me love Black Metal even more than I already do!
fr \m/
Perfect timing i am creating original song and my bass was so boring until you provided these amazing tips thank you🙏🙆💯🎶🙋
all good man thank you
Hauntingly beautiful use of natural minor in the ascending pattern for the transition work. With bass, depending on the riff in question, it can be tricky to take various liberties, but here the melodies are done to excellent effect.
By the way, the audio quality was uniquely great, given that you used stereo tracks.
Great vid and i wish more people would do the bass guitar justice, especially in metal
preach
Well, tech-death bands with their five and six string madness... And you got it :)
Thanks so much for making this video man, I started learning to play bass so its awesome for me to see people making videos like this.
Awesome riffs dude. Love the Griever necklace too, I see you. 💎
ff8 best game
This was so needed, thank you ! I think it'd be cool to do a lesson on harmonizing, or rather how to get 2 guitars to sound good together while still doing their own thing (kinda like you did there with the bass). A prime example of that would be the song "Where Dead Angels Lie" by Dissection (yes, I love that band)
yeah can deffo do a lesson on harmonies
@@DevGohil I'll make sure to be there whenever it comes out !
I found this very informative and educating. Im not really a black metal player or even a real black metal fan tbh. But i like using these types of riffs/chords to my own playing. As a bass player, it is sometimes difficult to find your place with metal in general, even the bass tone in general. I myself usually start with the same guitar riffs(most time root notes) and build from there. Thanks for enlightening us👍
Nice one glad you got value from this video
In black metal there is so much space for the bass to do stuff. Older Marduk's songs are a great example.
I was in a black metal band ,were I was the bassist, and we decided we put the gain and treble as loud as possible with my bass in order to get a rhythm guitar like sounds, as we didn't had any rhythm guitarist in our bands, Do you think it can be a good way for black metal bass parts ?
if you make it work, sure
I have heard of ppl using an octive pedal for that kind of thing
Although not exactly Black metal, Arcturus’ Sideshow Symphonies album is a great example of bass lines being not overly complicated, but still adding an extra melodic element to the music without distracting from the main riff.
Your playing is killer dude. Thank you for the lessons keep it up!
cheers man, stay tuned for more
Strid is another band that let's the bass do much of the melodic bits, the song "Nattevandring" is a great example.
Thanks for that excellent metal bass lesson and for that very interesting food for thought about writing metal bass lines.
What a great lesson! Thank you for your great work!
calling the 7th scale degree in e minor e flat instead of d sharp is slightly aggravating. 1:49 nitpick ik lol i also think of that note on the fretboard as e flat
Its so cool how many explorers you have, the Explorer is one of the coolest body styles. i have multiple schecter starts, some guitars just look cool
Pointy shapes supreme
Oh hell yeah I've been waiting for this video!!! Thank you for putting this out I hope you put out more bass videos 🤘😈🤘

I didnt touch a bass in my entire life and i have a simple question,is there any type of bass more good for black metal like jazz bass modern bass heavy bass etc who is the best?
Anything that suits your style. theres no right or wrong
Like you are the best explanation I ever seen in my life! thank you bro! Lot of things are now clear to me as bass player!
All good my g thanks for watching
Great to follow this ! I try to improve picking hand. Thank you for this riffs 🤘🤘
nice one thanks
i swear you have the best tone for black metal
Looool it’s just plugins in this video
@@DevGohil that's insane lol
@@DevGohil is it archetype gojira?
@@TheCritic5150 nah I used amped roots (the free one) and a logic bass sound
@@DevGohil oh okay
I wish you would have played the first riff with just single notes ringing out, that might have also sounded cool and ominous.
Great idea
Great tutorial! Thanks 🤘🏼
how is the norvegian band called ?
tsjuder/urgehal/taake/one tail one head
Totally awesome, I can't wait to try this!
nice one man
@@DevGohil Yeah, I fell in love with Black Metal when I first heard it in the early 2000's, but I never thought I could play it, (except on drums). Well, now my attitude has changed. I am going to learn it on bass and guitar this winter.
@@coolestreviews5315 awesome man, you're in the right place for that
Great stuff thank you. In general I'd love more songwriting rationales lile how do I turn a chord progression I like into a cool song.
Really cool tone
Awesome lesson and I guess one of the few videos on the net at all about bm bass
Was about time someone did a lesson on this
@@DevGohil absolutely man! Glad to see you working on it. For a lot of bassists in BM bands it's root notes only because they can't find the resources to show them more variety. Hope there's more on the way, really enjoy your style :)
This is great! Just curious, do you have suggestions for EQ settings (bass and amp) to get a good black metal bass tone? Yours has a good balance of punch and low end-I’d love any tips!
Yo man, i just try and go for a tone similar to Mayhem's Chimera album, 'tanky' high mid bass tone
I like using bass as an excuse to get really wankery, just a positive that it usually makes a part sound more technical/interesting.
Great advice! Might I recommend a 5 string bass over a 4 string bass though. You don’t have to detune it.
5 string basses are supreme
@@DevGohil Yes 👏!
Nice bass sound, can you tell the signal chain?
Just a bass straight into a logic preset
This was really quite helful. Thanks!
thanks man
Riff starting at 6:00 is fucken sweet!
thank you!
Good lesson, concrete and helpfull, thank You Dev 🤘
Thanks man
great post, sharing with my bass player \m/
Great episode. 🤘
Now record it to a tape deck, copy it, copy that copy, then record it through a phone.
loooool
Thank you so much for the lesson it was really helpful, what kind of guitar are you using at 8:26? it’s beautiful!
hey man thanks
The guitars used in the video are a Dean ML metalman bass and my Jackson Rhoades Minion
Guitars in the background are some of my Deans
@@DevGohil thank you so much man! been trying to get into playing so i could try a one man band type thing and i think these two would work best for me. keep up the great work!
@@tarrangriffith4653 Cheers man, check out the latest video I made about the Jackson, play before you buy
@@DevGohil absolutely i’ll definitely check it out! i’m thinking that i’m gonna start with one of them first then work my way to the other, any recommendations on which bass to start on out of the two?
@@tarrangriffith4653 honestly, any bass that you feel is comfortable and nice to play will suffice
I didn't know there is bass in BM

This is Bass huh? Wow
Awesome Pokémon Shirt.
What bass it it?? Looks killer!!
Dean ML Bass
@@DevGohil is it light?
@@gmltnsg6500 Light enough, it's been used for a number of shows and neither myself or anyone using it had any issues with the guitar. Always sounds killer

Hi Dev, do you have another Bass line videos?
not yet
i wanna sell my electro and buy a bass after watching this video
keep and electric and a bass both will be handy
@@DevGohil im living in turkiye the guitar, piano, drum etc etc prices is so high
Wowww, amazing, this reminds me the soundtrack of dorian gray in peny dreadful made by abel korzeniowski, where bass partshad more dynamic and where indipendent and even mroe interesting adding a sense of movement and mistery to the track! the same concept here but made in black metal i love it. what is the name of your bass? i like its shape ... ☺ #DarkVanities
Thanks man! The bass is a Dean ML
@@DevGohil you know what? I subscribed! it's freaking awesome dam!!! Dev you are a great guitarist and bassist, did you record a full track of the riff shown in this video? do you produce songs or tracks? i will watch all your videos bro, cause these tips are gold ♥ ♣ let's bang it out!!
@@DarkVanities Thanks man
I've made/produced a few songs

how do you get your bass to sound so clean?
I'm running d'addario XL strings and D tune but i'm getting lots of string noise. Also my higher strings are loud and lower strings are too quiet..
Not sure, I’m using a clean bass tone if that helps
I like that bass tone. What are you using?
some logic X preset which i tweaked
@@DevGohil ah nice. Sounds wicked. Thanks
the riffs at 5:35 , are they from a song? which?
i made all these up for this vid
@@DevGohilsounds great man, thanks for the response
@@kellmustbedestroyed tabs available in my book
i like how you play 8th notes instead of 16s... playing 16 notes doesnt give the notes the time and space to breath out and be heard
exactly, makes the mix muddy
You should make more bass videos
@@pestilentdeath5814 stay tuned
Live its needed, it can take a lot of tempo and energy out of the song in my opinion
Which bands?
What distortion do you use?
No bass distortion, guitars are the amped roots plugin
Good lesson
Thanks man
Great ideas man, very helpful!
No worries
why did the "boring version of bass" sound so malicious??
nicely done
What pedal are you using?
No pedals
Indian Dave Grohl
I'm playing in a black metal band and i'm not a big fan of that fancy basslines
Sure it's way more interesting to listen to but personally i prefer more simple bass lines for black metal
oh so making transitions ?
And you should upper the volume of your voice, its low compared to the guitar
Dude is this a song? If not, please make it
no songs, just messing about
@@DevGohil well that first one should def be a song
WELL DONE.THANKS FOR SHARING THESE TIPS.COULD YOU MAKE A TUTORIAL FOR THE MILLENIUM KING BY OMC
Hey Dev thanks for your videos really helping me a lot, could you do a review of an album from an italian band? It's called ATAVICUS they got inspired by ABBATH you can find the album here on UA-cam. Whatever if you want to actually make a review video it's up to you, I just want to hear your thoughts and want to learn their style.
why arent you using distorsion for your bass?
Didn’t want or need to
100% better without bass. This the way black metal should be.
🤨
u focking rock 😮
I wouldn't worry about the bass taking away from the guitar. You can't hear the bass. Guitar is way to loud. Drowns the bass out. Balance the sound more or don't bother even playing bass.
\m/ Yesss
My g
I have subscribed to your views on bass in a black metal context for a long time now.
I’m in Sacramento and want to play bass for a black metal band. Hit me up if you need a bass player and are near me. Have wanted to play with a black metal band but not too many black metal bands in my area.
Here's a BM bass lesson: Unless you're the dude from DsO, don't be audible, not once not ever. 10/10 would learn again.
dude you have played ad hominem i hope they let you in peace \m/
too technical
good
It’s fools like this that have ruined black metal.
black metal bass? no such thing
pretty good, but needs to be less audible...more "non-existent" to be black metal. That's why I take my strings off and mime playing the bass.
Dont agree at all…. First of all, the bass always needs to serve the bass drum and drums… second, when guitars are playing a riff it’s not always good to play additional notes on the bass. It needs to fit between drums and guitars and bring them together. Not to play melodies.
depends on the riff
@@DevGohil no. Depends on the beat.
Looking for the riffs is the typical failure of bassists who never had bass lessons. And even in black Metal you should know how to get rhythm and string section together.
But if it fits for you it’s okay.
@@Nergahl I treat bass as an extra guitar that locks in with the drums
Id ask Geddy or Mr. Squire about that. But u are right for most of the time.👍
lame
can you get this sound with most electric guitars or bass? i've never really played guitar or bass in my life but I'm getting bored so I'm thinking about it. I've just come across "bridgecraft", "laguna", and "epiphone" guitar brands for sale
no I've never heard of them in my life but the bridgecraft is the least expensive
Kinda, tone is always hard to replicate
@@DevGohil thanks. so nothing wrong with a cheap 'bridgecraft' then?
never used one so I wouldnt know my dude@@Trendyrapslut
