I had four crab shedders at my home on the James River for years.I worked a full time job and ran peeler pots in the afternoon. My Dad was retired at the time and he would monitor the shedders while I was at work.I worked them at night.To minimize loss to becoming paper-shells I had to work them every 2 hours throughout the night.So yes,you have to be close to minimize loss.

Grew up in MD across the highway from Pasadena; regularly had crabs, hard and soft. I live in MI now and I can't tell you how much I miss crabs & the fun that comes with it, sitting around a table with friends and picking a ;pile of crabs. I love your videos, Luke. Brings me home. ❤🥲

There's a special paint for your exhaust wrap that will keep you from getting fiberglass splinters! Also, it's easier to wrap tight if you soak it in water first but yours looks great!
Having too many softcrabs should never be a problem in Maryland. The problem is usually getting the word out of where to buy good softcrabs. Over the years my family have had a hard time finding who has them readily available so I would say distribution is key and you are doing a great job with your marketing and distribution. The only bad part for us is that you are now about 45 minutes away without the bridge. Great video, coming down soon to get some crabs!!

I have a live fish & seafood business & you could make ALOT more money if diversify by buying up the crab in your area & run trucks to the Asian grocery stores from Richmond to northern Virginia. Promise you'll make 100 grand a year just on blue crab. I would sell them all the fresh fish also. Add shrimp to your crab shack! Good luck, love your channel

back in the late 70s I remodeled A&P stores, spent years around Baltimore area, there was a shit load of stores in the area, every fri when I was headed home 3 dozen soft shells came with me probably couldn't afford them nowadays

Luke Try running your pickup from pump (for crab tank) into the pontoons let it work as sump for pontoons then run that water into tanks and filtered back into bay. Fix sinking pontoon problem while running one pump
We have a place on the eastern shore off the sassafras and i always wondered why there were so many “dead” smaller crabs by our shoreline…now I know that they are the sheds! Learn something new everyday

I grew up in GB. We used to launch outta Sandy Point and crab the Severn across from the Naval Academy. Ran 1500 feet of trot line at the time, remember my dad would have us bait the lines til our fingers were raw from the chicken neck bones. It was the early 90s and we sold bushels of large males for $35. Miss it out there!
Been following for a bit now, can you go into detail about soft shell and paper shell crabs? Why you toss them back? What’s the difference? Is it legal to keep a paper shell? When you pull the good newly shed soft crabs out of the tank, what keeps the shells from getting hard? If they stay in the tank too long they turn into paper shells right? Do you have to kill and clean them right away?
Watching your videos brings back memories. When I was a kid in the 60s I lived in southern Maryland and we would fish for blue crab right from the dock. I remember when I was about 9 years old going to the crab house and getting a tray of crabs. I was wanted to make it back for a vacation, but never worked out. Now getting ready for my third spine fusion. What company would you recommend for shipping cooked crabs to michigan. It's amazing how much they cost these days. Keep up the great videos, your a hard working guy.

Also sell solar light tower trailers to power your off grid boat. Add more roof panels. Turns old boats and trucks into mobile emergency generators. Redundant power to get back to the dock.
They started doing bush solar upgrades with generators backup. You can also charge by shore power if at a commercial rate. They will help put panels on every surface available. Imagine running on electric motors. May catch more crabs, less noise. Get a green grant for the boat and your truck conversions.
Luke, you may end up realizing that you have to find someone to watch the shed tanks 24/7, AND/OR upside your operation substantially. I know you can find out a way to ship frozen soft shell crabs. Shoot, I would buy them and I live in Louisiana. Can I be the first dozen you ship out in an insulated foam chest with those dry ice style freeze bags all around them?
There's certainly not as many crabs in the bay as there was when i was working the water. We would constantly have 35 to 40 crabs per pot. But this was back in the mid 90's. I miss those days.
The Chesapeake bay is disgustingly polluted and almost completely DEAD compared to what it was 150 years ago. They used to have problems with ship and dock worms growing huge. But pollution killed them all around USA
I also have a 7.3 that runs and starts in the winter.. may be manual glow plug switch in the cab and a main power disconnect but it is what it is hahaha
Keep that condenser coil cleaned on that commercial drink fridge and it will last forever. Same with all your ac related equipment. When they are dirty is when the pressures go sky high and they start breaking down due to excessive run times
Just a Question Did you profit enough from the shedding tubs to justify doing a bigger operation In the future? I would be interested in finding out if it was a Grand idea ,which I think it was, to expand it next the season. Since your catch is smaller this time of year.

Need an aerator in that slough tank. Small 12v bilge pump and some pvc with holes drilled in it.
