  • Eggs are super expensive and more people than ever are interested in getting their own chickens, so coops can be very expensive or hard to come by. Here's one way to get an inexpensive coop that may already mostly built right in your own back yard. I had an old swing playscape in my backyard that my kids rarely use anymore so I decided to turn it into a chicken coop and I am pretty happy with how it turned out. Now I have three chickens happily living in a multi level coop and providing eggs and entertainment for my family, plus chicken manure for the garden. See how I did this money saving garden hack to build a unique chicken coop. #chickencoops #backyardhens #gardenhacks
    Approximate total cost of materials:
    Hardware cloth $150 amzn.to/422b5Vu
    Asphalt shingles $30
    Lumber $120
    Hardware $40

I love this. Great job. Looks great painted too. Very functional for the girls. I'm in the process of building a coop out of my old fence as I had hundreds of boards lying around making a mess. Been working on it for months and so close to finishing.

Fantastic! I was telling my husband this was what I wanted to do... and he was skeptical! We are stealing your idea! Question: is the nesting box opposite the screen door wall or is it the wall near the rope/chain ladder (opposite the revolving door)? Also, what is estimated total out-out-pocket costs (plus your labor of course!)?

Happy to hear it inspired you! Steal away! The nesting box is opposite the side with the screen door. In my playscape it was the side with a solid "climbing wall" that I built the box into. I bought the lumber and supplies in spring 2020 before prices went up I think and it was just under about $350 then. I also used some scrap lumber I had lying around so your cost may be higher now. The hardware-cloth was the biggest single expense. There's a cost breakdown in the description above. - Good luck!
