Freaky Fred. This episode terrified me as a child due to it not featuring monsters but a real human man that pretty much tortured Courage in a bathroom by shaving his fur. His whole creepy inner rhyming monologue was also scary. However, despite episodes featuring terrifying characters such as Fred I do like one theory about Courage. It states pretty much that there arent any real monsters in the show at all. Every "monster" is just the fear of the unknown as seen through the eyes of a dog that suffers from PTSD. In retrospect many of the episodes of the show do seem to make this theory kind of hold up. However, in the case of Fred, maybe Muriel did have a nephew named Fred that was mentally unwell. Maybe Fred was schizophrenic and for whatever reason he was placed into a mental institution for some kind of bizarre crime. I really get serial Killer vibes from Fred. In the episode he is refered to as a "freaky barber".
Everytime that dude said the word “naughty” I felt like I was about to die The only thing that I would rewatch that episode for would be the creepy children going lalala every five seconds in the background
Don't forget how absolutely fantastic the character development is in this cartoon, especially Eustace. Eustace is one of the most complicated characters in the show, he's shown as a cruel, merciless and greedy bastard, but it all comes down to how he was ignored by his family in his young years when he tried his best to be recognized by his mother, all of that rejection turned him into what he is now, however, his heart isn't entirely rotten, as it can be seen in that episode where he thinks Courage is a child version of himself, where he shares his hat to that child because his head was being covered in rain. It's fucking sad, dude.

the episode of Eustace having that weird cloud above him that ends with him giving a hat to a kid version of himself is probably the most sweet thing i ever watched in my life.

Bro, i love how you can easily swith from ridiculous comedy to serious analysis and yet you never lose the attention of your fanbase. You are simply a talented human being and thats all to it.
This show is actually a masterpiece. I have a feeling the only reason this show was aired on a children's channel is because of the stereotype of that if its a goofy cartoon its for children, but for this it's not really for children it's an artistic series with deep meaning and a surreal atmosphere that leaves the viewer amazed and entranced after watching.
Cartoons back then were nothing like this either. Courage was unique in almost every possible way. Hell, forget cartoons; they rarely make *horror* this good. They didn't rely on jump scares to give us nightmares. They built it through sheer dread and tension, through presentation and tone. Yet they were able to keep it funny and absurd enough to keep kids watching, but always watching with a feeling, deep down in our chest, that through all the jokes, something was amiss. Something was wrong. Something was waiting for us just around the corner. That show was fucking brilliant
Kinda strange when adults say things like cartoons today just aren't the same and nothing like this, dude you were a kid, you're an adult now of course youre not gonna actively enjoy watching cartoons unless through nostalgia. Kids watching todays cartoons are gonna be saying the exact same thing you're saying when they grow up, juvenoia etc
i couldn't agree more. The tower of Dr. Zalost and Dr. Gerbil's World are some of my favorite episodes of the series. This show had it all- atmosphere, music, beautiful art and animation, and creative themes and characters. Courage was the best of its time, it's a shame that this type of quality cartoon isn't on tv anymore
Those, among others, and especially any of the episodes centered around humanizing Eustace with his tragically awful childhood are my favorites. Just everything about the show was pitch perfect and memorable.
The final chase in Dr. Gerbil was probably my favorite scene in the whole series. Just the melancholy music with no sound effects made it so intense, especially when Gerbil goes down the waterfall
here in my region, they re-aired the show in the month of October, just to hype Halloween. But I’ll doubt it would last. due to its dark theme and atmosphere.
Courage was such a unique show, it was also well written and well animated. a serious gem of a cartoon that pushed boundaries for what a kids cartoon can be.
I was watching that episode when I was a child, then my mom saw what I was watching and she said how sad it was and legitimately made me teared up. God, for a horror comedy, they sure made a great heartwarming episodes.
The first *glimpse* of King Ramses sent a shiver down my spine and reminded me why I still feel uncomfortable looking out of windows when it's dark out.
Man I don't know how much of a coward i back then cause my 8-year-old mind couldn't handle King Ramses one like i legit completely forgot that existed but the one i really remember is the NAUUUGHHTTTY guy
6:42 i remember that theme scaring the shit out of me as a kid, and i had to constantly keep switching channels because i didn't want to hear that theme
I remember when i was in highscool looking for this exact theme just because i remembered it waa a banger and as soon as critikal mentioned the music, both scenes came to mind immediately and made me very happy he brought it up
Seems to me that most cartoons nowadays are too afraid to take risks. 90% of them nowadays are just dumb jokes where nothing that happens in one episode ever has anything to do with any other episode. But all the most amazing cartoons, and even shows in general from the last 30 years have all been shows that took risks, and Courage took a lot of them. And when it did take risks, it almost always succeeded.
Sonic Mania true now they will try to push ideas on to kids I really love to watch ok kids but then some writers decided to put the idea of banning guns and saying “guns bad” and it pissed me off since it was literally propaganda
I remember when I was young, Courage was the ONLY cartoon on TV that my grandfather would watch with me, he actually enjoyed it, and I have a lot of memories watching it with him. Now whenever I see the show it always makes me think of him and those good times we spent together. I'll always be grateful to the creator of Courage for that.
I loved the concept of lite horror being mixed with a cartoon, it was so unique and it worked so well. Courage was definitely one of my favorite shows as a kid.
I first saw it when i was around that age and it caught me so off guard because it was at the end of a scooby doo episode as a bonus. The scooby doo episode was the one with real aliens
The episode that effected me the most was the one about how courage came to be abandoned. That shit literally would make me cry on demand. That's a sad fucking episode.
The fry's dog episode of futurama did this to me. It amazes me how much emotion can be conveyed through cartoons meant primarily for comedy, and being a youngin watching these scenes can escalate the emotional experiences 10 fold.
This show is genuinely really scary.......I remember always avoiding it, and when I finally watched it as a kid, I couldn't go to the bathroom alone for like 3 months
Anyone remember that part of an episode where Courage opened a door and a lady was sobbing, and then she turned around and screamed at him with a scary face? Or was that a fever dream?
Come to think of it, nothing has really ever replicated the feel and style of Courage, sure there are other monster of the week shows, maybe even a few "children's horror" shows, but it had a unique blend of surreal, dreamlike qualities that I just haven't seen in any other show.
I couldn't sleep for weeks after seeing that episode where Eustace and Muriel are turned into puppets and the episode ends with them still being puppets and courage having gone insane controls them in an effort to have normalcy restored
It is my favorite cartoon too. My favorite episode is "Courage in the Big Stinking City". This show has a special place in my heart. Long story short, when I was younger my siblings and I were placed into foster care. I fell into a deep state of depression. The only solace that I found that saved me was Courage the Cowardly Dog. Fun fact: I actually got to tell my story to the voice actor of Courage. He said I touched his heart deeply.
I came expecting memes and jokes but what I got was a serious analysis on one of my favorite shows. I'd like to see more content like this keep it up Charlie
Watching this video makes me weirdly melancholic. It's nostalgic indeed, and shows how fast time changes. I once used to watch this and be scared out of my wits, but now watching this makes me understand the context and appreciate it much more.
My favorite episode is The Mask, it also has my favorite soundtrack in the series. Like man talk about dealing with real world problems, that episode really spoke to me. Not just the subject it dealt with but the deep feeling it conveyed. Also to add to the fact it kind of teaches you and shows you not to judge someone the wrong way straight off the bat, from Courage's perspective and the Cat's. Courage thought the Cat was some sick and twisted individual but he had no idea what they were going through and how it effected them. Then how the Cat though he was some sick abuser, but they both came to the realization in the end that they both weren't how they had assumed. Wish you would have brought that episode up lol Yeah you can't really compare Courage the cowardly dog to anything else. It's really in a league of its own with its visuals story telling and such.
Not a lot of people talk about it but my favorite part of the episode was Eustace and Muriel make up in the bed together. I always loved when they showed a more human side to Eustace.
courage the cowardly dog is trully a really well thought cartoon, From the emotions its giving to the laugh and scares that it has . Its just so good !
5:30 That space squids episode has got to be my favorite of the entire series, though that's not to say that every other episode isn't top fuckin notch. The entire show deserves praise as it just, is a collection of masterpieces in comedic horror that manages to work even with children.
@@taylorcoley6329 no she was in abusive relationship with one of the dogs making think shes not good enough and stays because she doesn't think she can do anything and suffers while being "trapped" by the dog guy if I'm thinking of the right episode so it's a commentary on domestic abuse and its really interesting to see a kid show talk about such a dark topic
a summary of the scene that lend me to believe my claim We then see Muriel, Eustice, Courage and the Masked Figure at the table. The figure is telling a story about herself, and we hear that she is called Kitty. Kitty is from the "wrong side of the tracks". We also learn that she has a "closest friend", called Bunny who "fell in love with a gangster," of whom "treats her like a slave." Eustice jokes about and says "sounds like my kind of guy!" Kitty then goes on to explain how he's nothing more than a dirty dog. Bunny's boyfriend threatened Kitty's life when he found out that she was trying to get Bunny to run away with her. Courage points to the bruises on his head, but Muriel snaps at him and tells him to let the guest finish her story. Kitty further explains that she can't face the truth that she'll never see Bunny again. She also explains that she's lost without Bunny. Eustice makes (another) joke and says "take that mask off and you might see better!" This pisses Kitty off, so she knocks the tea pot off of the table and walks off saying, again, "dogs are evil."

the episode of Eustace having that weird cloud above him that ends with him giving a hat to a kid version of himself is probably the most sweet thing i ever watched in my life.

This show truly was legendary, I'll never forget it. Sadly, cartoons today are nothing like this.
They don't even come close to how good this show was
Cartoons back then were nothing like this either.

Just everything about the show was pitch perfect and memorable.
my favorite episode is Courage in the Big Stinkin' City solely for the violin girl. I also
The final chase in Dr. Gerbil was probably my favorite scene in the whole series. Just the melancholy music with no sound effects made it so intense, especially when Gerbil goes down the waterfall
The Tower of Dr Zalost is one of my favorites as well. Such a great episode.

And when it did take risks, it almost always succeeded.
agreed
Memento Mori yeah people are sensitive nowadays

Wish you would have brought that episode up lol

a summary of the scene that lend me to believe my claim
We then see Muriel, Eustice, Courage and the Masked Figure at the table.
"And I'd have nightmares about it before falling asleep" seems legit
