Important thing to consider regarding Nito is that due to all of the aforementioned shenanigans in prolonging the Age of Gods his own soul has been wrung out quite a bit itself. The poor guy is way past his prime.
He didn't help the gods do that. The seal of Gwyn trapped him to limit his influence. Gwyn only kept him alive since his lord soul could still be useful for kindling the flame. Gwyn and his followers would later produce the dark sign to trap humanity in the cycles of undead to make the age of the gods permanent.
Nito is generally considered to be far weaker than in his heyday, with Pinwheel stealing his secrets and powers. It's also somewhat implied that Pinwheel has kicked him out of his original home in the Tomb of the Giants, as evidenced by Pinwheel being the one living in a giant opulent sarcophagus while Nito is in some dingey cavern, only being visited by his most loyal servants and the primary entrance to his final resting place being guarded by Pinwheel's fellows.
I mean, even when he's putting in the bare minimum of effort, Nito can still fuck you up. It feels like the only thing keeping Nito from seeking revenge on Pinwheel is that...simply put, Pinwheel is just not worth the effort. Nito: "...eh, fine, sure. I'll probably get more sleep in this cave anyways..." Pinwheel: "I AM TRULY SUPERIOR TO YOU, GRAVELORD!" N: "...whatever helps you sleep at night you tri-headed tryhard..."
The Blackest Night falls from the skies, The darkness grows as all light dies. We crave your hearts and your demise, By my black hand, the dead shall rise!
Here's actually a fact about Elise from Gunvolt: Sumeragi wanted to control her ability to bring the dead back to life, so they decided to implant another personality into her, unfortunately; this personality ran rampant and caused the entire facility to be almost destroyed and this was the Elise you meet in the boss rush. The other Elise we see first, fight, and who was ordering her original self around was actually a 3rd personality implanted into her in order to control both personalities. As for her splitting into multiple bodies, I'll chalk this up as Sumeragi trying to manage Elise in some particular way.
Reminder that she's caught up in Sumeragi's mess in the first place because she ended up player killing in a video game. And because Merak didn't feel like doing paperwork and got her dumped straight into Adept experimentation.
I would've added in Mannimarco from The Elder Scrolls. Man managed to ascend to lichdom and then godhood. He's basically TES version of Vecna now that I think of it.
I saw this list and immediately thought of Valder but figured wargroove would be too under the radar. BOY WAS I HAPPY TO BE WRONG Also will never be over how Valder pretty much hits every single villain stereotype at face value, but his ultimate goal is literally just equal rights for the undead. In his arcade mode he spouts intentionally vague yet almost certainly sinister lines about his plans, but that vagueness hides his ending where the undead just casually live amongst the living now like they belong.
he would absolutely love the nation of Geb in Pathfinder. it's a nation where the undead and living have equal rights under the law and whenever someone dies they're raised into undeath
Yeah, I realized nothing was too under the radar when Edna made number one on the parasol list. That said, really wish Majorita from DISGAEA was on here.
41:34 there’s one other prospect to consider about Nito. His little forceful resurrection it’s just as present and all-consuming as the sacrifice to the first flame. So when you think about it. Even with him dying in the first game his impact is felt throughout the other two. Essentially his presence is just as oppressive throughout the entire dark so series as lord Gwen himself.
True, though since these are fantasy worlds it's often simplified to ferrous (magnetically-reactive) metals. Though on closer inspection, a lot of fantasy metals either contain or are inspired by iron. Any steel or alloy, adamantite was based on meteoric iron legends, etc.
I mean that why rell was tortured by the black rose. To be used as a weapon if mordekaiser ever returned on Runeterra. Which is why the black rose was formed by Leblanc who betrayed mordekaiser, seeking him below the immortal bastion
My favorite is Mannimarco, King of Worms. Though unfortunately most of his biggest necromancer moments are from the lore books rather then in actual game.
@@nickyrichtofen yes, but only as leader of the cult. And most stuff in his boss battle was normal magic rather then necromancy. So he was represented well as the cult leader, but not so much as a necromancer.
Kinda sad that Grima, the Fell Dragon didn't make the cut. His CONTINENTS worth of Risen, and his power when fought head on, definitely make him a formidable foe. Not to mention the fanatical Grimleal who worship him.
Good argument, but sadly it falls a little flat lore and scope level wise. Grima in lore never created the risen and never really needed the risen to cause a continental change in Archanea geography. Grima’s power is great enough to end entire world’s if victorious and scar entire continents if left unchecked for even a little too long. Compared to all of that the risen are just a bunches of disposable soldiers. Grima is frankly the furthest thing from a necromancer being more an end bringer than anything else.
One the most interesting aspects of Nito to me is the smaller coffin that rests next to his. it never gets directly mentioned anywhere in any dialogue or item description, which is weird because it seems like whoever it belonged too should be important to him. Never comes up in Ds2 or Ds3 either, and now that the series is over we’ll probably never know the truth of it. Perhaps who exactly it used to belong to isn’t import, instead maybe the sad idea of the embodiment of death experiencing loss was simply all it meant.
I'm a little sad that my boy Death from Darksiders wasn't on the list but hey at least he appeared for a brief moment. Maybe he would have had a better chance if his feats in the abomination vault novel were included.
Is this monster month? Please please please please please! I've wanted a return of Monster Month ever since you made the first one! I was even considering becoming a countdown maker just so I could make my own!
One of my favorite necromances from video games is Malistaire Drake the first major villain of the MMORPG Wizard101. He's a master of death magic and by extension necromancy who is on a quest to revive his deceased wife after she dies of an incurable illness. He was so determined to revive his wife Silvia that he was willing to make deals with a world ending cult, unleash several plagues of un-death, bring a couple of societies to the brink of collapse, steal the eye of a god who helps hold the universe together, and revive an ancient primordial elemental god of fire and life that could turn his universe into a cosmic pile of ash in order to revive his wife. Then when the player character manages to kill Malistaire he gets revived by the next major villain Morganthe and transformed into a nearly invincible wraith who, after getting thrown into space off of a world killing comet, challenges you to a final climactic duel where he has the ability to revive himself in a stronger form after defeat while being backed up by a colossal undead skeletal dragon. Another notable Necromancer I am fond of is a character called Old Scratch, a character from a game made by the same company who made Wizard101 called Pirate101. The two games actually share a universe. Old Scratch is an undead witch doctor that can summon the undead to help him fight his enemies who you recruit to your pirate crew after defeating him. He plays key roles in the main storyline and he gets his own series of side quests that progresses his own personal journey as a character.
I guess honorable mention to the fossil restoration folks. Heck, Cara Liss creates unnatural and eternally suffering abominations, but she somehow managed to remove the Rock typing from those fossils regardless so she's doing SOMETHING right.
@@TheTakato122 Yeah, but the list is top ten necromancers, not top ten deaths. And outside of dealing with death as his job Thanatos doesn't really fit the bill too much.
@@SentaiYamaneko right? her whole power is bringing the dead back to life temporarily and she's pretty versatile with her ability to do so, having lots of different minions to do her bidding, the only knock to her is that due to the mechanics of her game she can have a lot of other abilities besides her necromancy, so while she might rank thanks to her power she's defenitely not at the top of the list if we are looking at spellcasters that specialize in the necrotic arts since she's a bit too versatile...
I freaking love your videos. Especially your top tens. Been a long time subscriber to the channel. I know technically it's an animated adaption of a video game but Castlevania on Netflix S4 E6 has one of the best necromancer fights I've ever seen. Issac uses his reanimatiins brilliantly while fight Camilla.
I cannot say enough how happy I am you picked Mordekaiser for this list. There are a LOT of Champions in League who have cheated death, and more than a few who can control souls. Mordekaiser, however, studied and mastered the language of death itself, something that mortal minds can’t even comprehend. Basically, Mordekaiser puts even Viego to shame with his command over soul magic.
I think the same, Morde is what all necromancers aspire to be, what a more powerful thing than a guy who not only controls dead and is immortal, but also created a save point at the expense of death itself and can use the souls of their victims to build buildings, thrones, weapons, etc?
And okay, here it comes. The Blizzard things. Imagine this: Just a few moments after I got indulged in your channel and the countdown, we saw what was called the 'true villain/evil' of video game industry and that was Konami. 2015-2016 was a dark age for them. So... what are they doing now? Aside of not making good games like the fandom wanted, they've been rather harmless. They avoid any further controversies, stay holed in Japan, actually not bothering with Kojima again (They could have many times sabotaged Kojima's new studios, but they didn't). I won't forget their mistake, but I'm ready to move on from wanting them to go bankrupt. Heck, looking back with how the news outlet portrayed them, I could give a benefit of doubt that their evil acts might have been an exaggerated act by the news media and they might have been innocent all along, we just ate up an undying meme in the name of cheap 'justice/moral'. Maybe a lot hasn't forgiven them, but to me, the fact that they've gone quite silent since Metal Gear Survive, rarely making controversies and less advertising their pachinko, yet still lived with making products (just not video game ones)... I'm ready to 'forgive, but not forget'. But somehow I CAN'T say the same to Blizzard. Let's begin with Warcraft's lore. I've already had my misgivings the moment their storytelling issues start to flare up since I guess Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria, I didn't even take enough notice to Sylvanas' downward spiral, I was more focused on how they turned Jaina, my best girl, into a warmongering war hawk and I cannot even defend those pro-Alliance people like Greymane and ESPECIALLY Jaina's father. Which got worse and worse, and when Jaina started to get 'better', those image is still stuck at me that I just left the lore altogether, and that was when Sylvanas started spiraling out of control. It was then I realized that Wrath of the Lich King was the top form of World of Warcraft, afterwards it was all just the new people, less capable than the former crews, having to drag the World of Warcraft as long as possible. For profit, most likely, since WoW was the MMO juggernaut before. Lore and character integrity get sacrificed for that, and that's a big no-no, and yes, that included Sylvanas as well, she was actually pretty solid up until Wrath of the Lich King (Here's a funny reminder, for both Blizzard or even Netherrealm Studios, who ruined Sindel, I haven't forgiven that one: Even at their worst, Konami never ruined their existing characters of Snake, Simon or their other characters with retcons and retcons). I can understand why you jabbed on the post-Wrath lore... I just felt like what happened after Wrath was one big non-canon bullcrap. Moving on from that one, there's the fact that it started in 2018. Afterwards, it's been controversies after controversies that we never had a year where Blizzard didn't get caught in a big controversy. That year? Diablo Immortal. 2019? Blitzchung Incident. 2020? Warcraft 3 Reforged. 2021? You know what's happening right now. All in all, Blizzard now sounds more like a drug addict, except replace the 'drug' with 'big controversy', they can't just spend even one year without making a big controversy at cost of themselves. Square and their FFXIV clearly played the phrase "Slow and Steady Wins the Race", they started slow because FFXIV was a disaster at launch, but they soldiered on, rehabilitated with A Realm Reborn (which was partially inspired mechanic-wise by WoW) and doesn't stay on the big spotlight for too long, as opposed to Blizzard who got too high that their WoW was a culture-defining game, then became complacent and then... controversy-addicted. "At long last, no King rules forever" is most likely the most apt quote to be applied at Blizzard right now. I'll see how they get out of this right now, but I prefer to avoid most Blizzard games because sometimes the fandom can look pretty immature (or gaslighting) in defending or attacking Blizzard, so both sides aren't looking very appealing to me. Even if some of their games are competently made and clicks to my nostalgia (Diablo 2 Resurrected). They can either die due to continuously making mistakes, or they can pick themselves up and move in a slower place for the sake of future redemption, but I'll just be here observing neutrally, without further spiting them (There's already enough spiting, mine alone won't make a difference since I'm not that much of an influencer, I'll just let time spit out the outcome later). Just like I did with Konami (Fun fact, they at least are re-releasing games that were on their high days to modern consoles, so they knew where their golden age was). I'll come back to Blizzard in like 3-5 years as long as I don't hear them making a new controversy in between those years, and I'll see if they've turned into a gravestone, ready for some other company to apply extra necromancy on them ('extra' because some people think that Activision WAS the necromancer of the old Blizzard) or still kept struggling to survive by then. Until then, let's wait and anticipate just what kind of other controversy Blizzard will fall into next year, and I bet it's gonna be worse (then again, I think it's a little hard to top this one...) Aaaand that's about it. Lemme hear your thoughts. I might have been more lenient than others, but I had my own views in this. Oh, also! I recommend you to look at Captain Grim's video about 'Current State of WoW' and 'WoW player experiencing FFXIV'. And maybe make a reaction video out of it? That thing is a must-see for 'disappointed-at-WoW/Activision-Blizzard' players, and it's also hilarious even for a neutral observer like me.
Heck, most of what Konami DOES do in regards to videogames is releasing collections of their old stuff (such as the recently released Castlevania Advanced Collection), though with some exceptions like the absolute garbage that is Contra Rogue Corps.
@@TheIvoryDingo Well, Contra Rogue Corps was more like an experiment gone wrong when it comes to picking your outsourcing partner rather than releasing old stuffs (it wasn't old stuff), from latter interviews I kinda heard that even Konami themselves doubted if that was ready to go, but then decided to take a gamble for it (and failed horribly). Afterwards, they've been a little better on picking partners, but probably that Rogue Corps made them just want to GTFO from public places again and stay holed at their home (Japan) like a shut-in/hikikomori where at least they fared a lot better, different culture and all. How many times has it been they cancelled out their E3 invitation? I get the feeling that they cancelled their invitations because they realize they didn't have anything to show themselves, so better bow out and just no-show than embarrassing themselves further. (And that was before how the tastes of E3 seems to have shifted it didn't pack the same punch as before...) I mean, could be worse! They could have modified their old games and then injected unnecessary shits to follow with the trend just using their old stuffs (technically, this whole W3R and D2R was kind of 'rereleases of old stuffs to appeal nostalgia fans', Blizzard edition, with prettier graphics). They didn't though. As an older fan, that's pretty fine for me. There's other companies that did that kind of rereleases too (I think Capcom and sometimes Square does), and that's good. Bottom line, Western gaming industry (especially AAA ones) is a MESS right now...
Eh, I dunno. While yeah, to Konami's credit they have tried to avoid adding fuel to their fires, the more damning crimes of sabotaging ex-workers and treating them like a George Orwell novel didn't come from nothing. For all we know, they still do this sort of crap, they just keep it on the downlow. That being said, I agree that Activision-Blizzard are the bigger threat nowadays. Hell, EA's mostly become less a villain and more of a self-imposed joke. As for Ubisoft... Well, I'm sorry to report that THEY are arguably worse than even Konami due to their abuses to female workers. Point being, keep the "Forgive but never Forget", but also keep a sharp eye on what they're doing. Bear in mind that companies can easily hide their atrocities for sometime without anyone knowing about it. Just ask Channel Awesome, or the aforementioned Ubisoft. On a final note, I honestly blame Activision for at least some of Actiblizzion's blatant disregards. After all, being greedy panderers to their investors is kinda their schtick nowadays.
no idea what you talk about, diablo 2 remastered is definitely a worse game then diablo 2. same as warcraft 3 returned. and only because konami doesnt make bad headlights doesnt mean they improved, their games are zensored trash.
@@joinmarch76 People may disagree with me, but over time, I'm starting to believe that the Orwellian environment on Konami might have been a media manipulation. We haven't heard of that shenanigan again, and the news motto is that "If there's no news, then there's nothing bad happening." So when you said 'They're doing it again', I say, it's still 50/50, not completely true to be taken as a fact. You probably won't believe me, but I've personally met (via the internet) an indie dev that collaborated with Konami, making their game without microtransaction or censors right during the height of their black mark (the meeting was by pure accident, I was just looking for some indie games). The dev told me that Konami just told them to focus on their game, try to stay out of the radar, so they don't get caught in the fire of the incoming bad publicity of Konami. Then for curiosity's sake, I decided to play the game anyway, because hey, maybe there's still all those craps Konami was accused for: Microtransactions, pay to win, or other things and... I found NONE. (Difficulty and often dying? Yes, that was their deal even in their golden age of NES, so I'm used to it) And I think I bought that game when Blizzard's controversy of the year was... ah yes, Blitzchung incident. Personally, I feel like this is where I think that the whole thing about Konami's Orwellian environment could have been a big misunderstanding, a sensational news that just happens to coincidence when we were mad enough they would do THAT to Kojima (I don't think I can deny that one, for now. Unless I heard news from Kojima and Kiefer Sutherland about the truth on this whole case. Heck, I'll give it a chance that everything was just staged; since in that time Konami really wanted to get out of AAA and console gaming, and Kojima might have known just the most surefire and over the top way that coincidenced with how he wanted to set up his own studios. But until there's a proper source, just consider that a stupid, silly theory). It could have been this scenario as well: "They fired one misbehaving employee for legit reasons. And then said ex-employee in frustration said bad things on them. And then news translators mistranslated it in English to make Konami look pretty bad. And this is out in the same time with the conflict against Kojima." I can understand that the angry gamers back then ended up taking it as the one ultimate gospel. I mean, it's just one possibility, and they've been doing pretty well in Japan, where the culture is different, they went to win honest awards on some of their Japan-only console games (in the recent years too). You'd think if the Orwellian environment were still happening, even Japan would continuously call bullcrap on them too... (I think Blizzard's issue today was so bad that even the Chinese that they pandered jumped ship to FFXIV, making FFXIV surpassing WoW as their most favored MMO) well I think they DID call bullcrap on them, but they eventually moved on from that, time heals their wounds. So I think that, it's also important to not get stuck in the past or not just eating what the news gave you. And personally, I think it's a LOT healthier to not get too invested in our frustration of the time (including this whole Blizzard deal! We can get pissed for its time, but we need to know restrain to not get too over). So with all that said, I no longer really believe they're still doing those Orwellian environment. Their only 'sin' right now was that they're a shadow of their former selves, with decreased manpower and having to re-gather their strength and make due because of COVID-19, I'll see how they try to survive. But of course, I'll still keep an eye in case I end up being proven wrong and there's a new info that they're still doing it these days. "Forgiven but not forgotten" is pretty apt on them at least to me. Same goes with Blizzard, minus the 'forgiveness'. Like I said, if Blizzard wants me to forgive them, then gimme 3-5 years straight without controversies per year first, then I can move on to 'Forgive but not forgotten' phase. Konami has at least done that. (And for all we know, there may be some people out there that considers that after all Blizzard has done now, Konami was still worse. People's opinion can vary.) And by the way, after Diablo 2, I think that they ran out of nostalgic stuffs to me that they could have remastered, so there's that... (for instance, I didn't grow up with the Lost Vikings or Blackthorne... or heck, the original Diablo (sorry bout that!), if you think that could've been their shot at redemption later for the nostalgia cash in, more power to you. It just won't work on me even if they clean themselves up without controversies later.)
I know that Specter Knight and the Enchantress are two different characters and much weaker/less focused on necromancy than others, but I still think they should have at least been mentioned. Both of them have been shown to have the ability to raise the dead and manipulate souls on multiple occasions. The Enchantress revived, empowered, and enslaved Donovan as Specter Knight as well as corrupt Reize. Specter Knight summons skeletal minions in both playable and boss form, as well as presumably being the one to create the skeletons and ghosts found throughout the Lich yard and being a guardian and lord of the dead based on his interactions with Shovel Knight. I also think they should be mentioned in a pair because while Specter Knight is more prominently a necromancer, you do have to mention his connection with the Enchantress. It's like in D&D; the Enchantress is the patron and Specter Knight is the warlock.
You may have done my man Yorick dirty by picking Mord, but I still appreciate that someone actually remembered that he exists. They will remember Yorick Mori…
For Nito, and this is one of the reasons Souls lore can get so complicated, it is also heavily implied that he came back as the Rotten in Dark Souls 2. They both share similar attacks, design and that in new game plus he drops the "Old dead one's soul". Though with Dark Souls 2's questionable cannon at times its not really clear how this works. One of the bigger theories is that all the major characters of DS1 got reincarnated into this new world in new forms... But then DS3 kinda ignores that, so take that as you will
Actually, Arthas was not the one who taught Kel'thuzad necromancy, that was Ner'zhul the original Lich King, and Arthas only helped in Kel'thuzad's resurrection for it was Kel'thuzad that was giving instructions on how to revive him.
I still have to hand it to Arthas considering the fact that IN GAME he is one of only 2 bosses/whatever's that have technically defeated and killed the players even if they are themselves defeated later (the other being Argus)
I was part of that raid to beat Arthas with my human Paladin character back when I played WoW and holy crap was that tough besides the initial fight which was hard round 2 despite what the cutscene showed was still just as hard.
check out Pathfinder:Wrath of the Righteous, one of the Mythic Paths you can set out on is the Path of the Lich which culminates in you becoming a full fledged Lich
Undead Greetings. A ranking of those who raise the dead in combat, and time for my thoughts on each of this Shamans. 10: Starting off with one of Zag's love Interests. 9: A Gemini Envious Snake girl than goes triplet? Yikes. 8: I remember fighting this guy with my little brother. 7: An overlord of the dead with an army of Smart Zombies, yikes. 6: Finding Balance between life and death, I always like these type of Necromancers. 5: A Bard turned Necromancer making souls dance to his tune. 4: F's for my boi Yorick, but hey the other guy is pretty Metal. 3: Dang, talk about living thru a bunch of death of a world. 2: King? More like force of Nature. 1: The first of the Dead makes it the number 1 spot, In this land of dead he's our Overlord.
Personally I can't count gods as necromancers, as they didn't learn the magic, they made the magic. It's like those games you have as a kid where you just make up the rules so you win. There is no mastery there, they just are. Don't get me wrong fascinating picks, especially number 1, but when you start as a divine top slot its a kind of hollow victory. Especially with necromancy, as is a god really even alive? Are they really dead after the fight?
To be fair in Nito's case? God does not mean the same for him and Gwyn as it does others. He created the concept and ran it, but can still be defeated despite it. He is not invulnerable as he dies to your hand if your skilled enough. So he doesn't get to just win. Gwyn also trapped him too, so he was forced to make the grave lord covenant to try to compensate.
@@shadowsnake5133 exactly. They are called gods because they took that title with their great power. But nothing except the truest of ancient dragons cannot die. And even then, if they are corrupted by the right impurities or hit with the right stuff their immortality doesn't hold. So Nito fits better than most "gods" do really.
@@SavageHoundDusk Aren't they just Lords though?... Like sure they are god-like powerwise... But the souls franchise has actual gods. Gods that even the lords "Fear"... Velka coming to mind.
@@tysej4 no. Even Velka is simply a form of Lord, she was one of hundreds who Gwyn likely shared his power with. The "gods" of the franchise are simply a race of beings who found and attained immense power during the ages of Fire. Velka is just another "god". Gwyn the first of them all because of his lord soul of Sunlight giving him the most power of the Lord Souls. The race of "gods" was probably created by Gwyn. He has split his soul innumerable times, the four kings of New Londo are one mere example. So is Seathe. They are not true gods as most mythos would have you believe. Velka was feared by the gods because she was EXTREMELY secretive, her followers wielded lots of sorcerous powers and miracles both. She took knowledge from many places and put it to secret use that even Gwyn was ignorant of. Creating her order of punishment of Sin. So she might make the gods understand that even they had lines she would make them tow. She even hid Priscilla who held the power of Lifehunt. Which even gods could die from. Hell she might have been the one to give it to Havel when he rebelled. That power could allow a mortal like you to kill a God in their realms. That's why they were scared of her.
Not sure if they qualify for a list like this, but I see the X parasites from Metroid as potentially the most powerful necromancers in video games, besides maybe nito. They kill near instantly upon infection, can raise the body as an undead mimic, having all skills and knowledge of the host, and are stated many times to be a universal threat if they ever get off their homeworld.
You're right about most of it, but they don't really raise corpses. The SA-X for example is basically what the X got out of Samus' Power Armor, who is still very much alive. And that's not even bringing up later that they reproduce asexually and that there were no fewer than 10 SA-X by the end of Fusion. The key word is "mimic." They kill their hosts, replicate them (not even perfect copies, seen with SA-X's intro and also seen in Samus' Return's ending), and use what they get to their advantage. They are even capable of copying the technology of their kills, and aren't against mutating them to extremes if it suits their needs. Not Necromancers, but definitely terrifying specimens worthy of the Chozo's immense fear, and Scorpion's #2 Parasite.
Honorable mention to Malestaire Drake from Wizard101. The former Death Professor and the main antagonist of the game Malestaire is the brother of the Myth Professor Cyrus Drake and the husband of the previous Life Professor Sylvia. However when she died from a cold he was so grief stricken he blew up himself with the Death School. And is also the cause of all the undead class of enemies you fight throughout the game. Lost Souls, Skeletal Pirates and Warriors, Rotting Fodder, Scarlet Screamers, if it's an undead enemy you can bet Malestaire was the cause.
Another necromancer who I feel deserves a mention: Archibald Ironfist (from the pre-Ubisoft Might and Magic series), at one point the ruler of the kingdom of Enroth, who, in Might and Magic 6, had a scroll containing a spell powerful enough to contain a literally-planet-shattering explosion (the Ritual of the Void). It's worth point out that he acts as both a Hero in his campaign in Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (making him an accomplished general who is capable of on-the-fly reanimation of the skeletons of his dead foes) as well as the grand-master trainer of Dark magic in Might and Magic 7, giving people who learn from him the ability to learn how to cast Souldrinker, which sucks life from *everything in sight*.
This list has been quite wholesome when it came to the necromancer topic, although I still have to mention the in my eyes most original necromancer: Gauldoth Half-Dead, a former necromancer apprentice who gets falsely accused of several murders and gets... half-burned at stake. After escape he seeks solitude in the most inhospitable region in his world filled with deadly vapours, volcanoes, deserts and swamps. Out there he builds an undead nation of his own and instead of seeking revenge, he establishes peaceful diplomatic relations with pretty much every surrounding city and nation while making the country prosper. His story is interwoven with his philosophic insights and the depth of his character happens to actually exist. Although not all-powerful, animating and ruling a whole country while not being overthrown (as of yet) he is surely worth mentioning. (Also he can do a bit more than summoning 1 skeleton warrior when it comes to the crunch)
Darkrai isn't a necromancer, he's the embodiment of nightmares. Yveltal is a fair guess though. I had also considered a ghost type specialist as a possibility as well.
@@X-35173 Yeah I suppose it that’s correct. In fact, when writing that comment I failed to realize that necromancy has that huge focus on reanimation and communication with the dead. Still though, I thought Yveltal would have made the list. But… Top 10 Eagles, I guess? (A man can dream, hopefully!)
I wouldn't count Yveltal as a necromancer either, barely. Sure, it turns everything around it dead as a stone but since it's based on Shiva from Hindu religion, it's more of destruction power. Think of it as like weaker version of Dragon Ball's gods of destruction.
As much as I’d like to see a Pokémon rep for the list, I think the closest the series has to actual necromancy is the original ultimate weapon in X and Y. Yes I know there are some ghost-types that are confirmed to be undead, but we’ve almost never seen a singular entity use that kind of power.
"Mages revive tiny fragments of the primordials to do their magic. Tiny fragments suit tiny mages with tiny minds, but I've seen the bigger picture." I wonder if a video game series exists that shares this idea; in which ALL magic is lowkey necromancy.
What a coincidence that Endwalker (FF14's next expansion) Is adding the Reaper class to the game. (Don't think it has any Necromancy abilities but then again I'm not a expert on that stuff.) Great list BTW!
Fun fact in most Greek Myths Thanatos the primordial God of Death is one of the three children born to the primordial Greek Goddess of Night Nyx his two siblings are his younger brother being the primordial Greek God of Sleep Hypnos, and his older sister being the primordial Greek Goddess of Vengeance, Retribution, and Justice Nemesis and the reason why Nyx, Nemesis, Thanatos, and Hypnos are called primordial deities is due to the fact they're older then all of the main Greek deities including Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, and older then 90% of the Titans including Chronos.
From what I've seen of necromancy in media, we've got basically 5 archetypes of necromancer. The oldest is the one that speaks with the spirits of the dead, followed by the concept of "necromancer" just referring to evil spellcasters who put curses on people. Then, there's the Frankenstein-style attempting to create or restore life one or two corpses at a time (with more intimate connections with one's creations), and the armies of skeletons (who are often more of a sort of canon fodder). From what I've seen, the reaper aspect IMO is the most recent necromancer archetype. It's interesting to see it evolve...
Guild Wars 2 has some fun necromancers too, both characters and a class. There is Trahearne who has the unenviable task to cleanse an undead continent. But more prominent recently is Majory, a private detective who crosses paths with you multiple times. Her necromancy is more creative and functional, she generally uses it for investigating. That is until she becomes a Reaper and learns how to use a dang greatsword.
the Necronominator from the titular flash game serie, a former necromancer who, upon conquering/reaping his world and reaching ours, lost his powers, but bounced back by creating a zombie virus... And then proceeded to zombify the entire world ;7
In a mobile game called soul knight, theres a female necromancer that is the best example of a necromancer. First skill is she curses an enemy that reduces theyre defense and summons a living shadow to attack. Second skill is she summons a plague comet that Poisons enemies and if they die while poisoned, they turn into friendly skeletons. And the third skill is you can revive 2 monsters and buff theyre attack speed, move speed, and damage, she can even revive some BOSSES as her pets.
Iratus was a very powerful, persistent, and crafty necromancer. Crafty enough that, after his resurrection from when he was slain and sealed up in a sarcophagus by the world's heroes, he single-handedly manages to kill his way through the forces of the now corrupt kingdom, raise and empower a small army of undead enough to completely destroy said kingdom and it's ruler, and when the Wizard came and told him to just go back to his coffin for when he's needed again, he said "screw this" and solidified his place in the world as the ultimate necromancer by defeating the souls of the heroes that killed him before that said Wizard sicced him with. The problem is that the bulk of his armies isn't really shown much outside of cutscenes, so it's possible that the small in-game army he commands is the elite meant to lead the charge against the world's strongest forces of life. If it weren't for that, he likely would've been a solid contestant for one of the top 5 spots, up there with Mordekaiser, Quan-Chi and Valder as far as scope goes. Sadly, Lich King and beyond would eat Iratus for breakfast, or just add him to their never-ending legions.
Hey Oscar, awesome video as always. I just wanted to say, on the slim chance you read this, recognize me, and don't immediately dismiss it, lord knows I wouldn't begrudge you given how I acted and that this isn't exactly the best venue for this sort of thing, that I'm going to work on improving myself. Who'd have figured that having one of my favorite youtubers tell me the equivalent of "I'm not mad, just disappointed" would be the thing to get me to do some real self examination. Hopefully I can get a better handle on my issues and not end up repeating the same mistakes. Just, wanted to put it out there. Anyway, no hard feelings on my end, keep up the awesome work, and have a happy Halloween man.

i remember where going for Northrends meant the final stage to become a true hero, where reaching the floating city of Dalaran was the final point of being a noob and from then on it was time to rise against the monster that king was and seemed unbeatable...
If I may bring up my personal pick for the topic, Corpse Master Overlord Majorita from DISGAEA 5. She’s able to use necromancy with her Overload skill, Broken Faith Magia, injecting her blood into bodies to control them and form a corpse army. In actual gameplay, this brings back every fallen unit as an ally; you cut a swath through her forces on the way to her, and she just brings them all back and pincers you.
Honorable mention goes to Jade Curtiss. Even though his informal title is "Necromancer", he's only known as such for developing cloning tech; his previous attempts to truly resurrect the dead have only brought him misfortune.
This topic makes me think of Dage the Evil from AdventureQuestWorlds. The dude was basically based off of the lichking thematically, but has had a lot of lore added to him over the years to separate him from it. Heck in one timeline he successfully turned every living thing on the planet undead, so he eventually built a giant time travelling spaceship, loaded it with cybernetically enhanced undead, and started to invade every timeline and aspect of the multiverse to essentially replace all of reality with undeath.
With the Necrodancer shout out to his Cadance of Hyrule counterpart being an older version of Octavio and the only reason he picked up the lute was to stop Ganon from ruling in his era
If you count Visual Novels, then Lisa Brenner from Dies Irae might count where she makes use of her relic made from the skin of dead children to either control groups of the dead or control a single über powerful undead with greater finesse. Reinhard from the same work might also count depending on whether or not you count his powers as Necromancy. He commands armies upon armies of golden skeletal warriors, all the souls of people who have died in wars and conflicts. And then there is his golden castle of bone, Gladsheim, which is not only made from even more souls, but that he can command and control individually and even change the whole thing into a humongous battle mode that dwarfs mountains. And just to make things even better, he wants to spread his ideas of eternal warfare across the cosmos and the multiverse, turning those ideas into an objective reality of fighting, dying, reviving and then fight again. The titular Day of Wrath, Dies Irae. In terms of pure scale, few can match this guy. And it get's better. The guy himself is perhaps the most dangerous part. He is powerful to an almost unreal level. In fact most of the time he stays out of a direct fight as he thinks it would turn boring if he were to join. He only fights directly when he thinks it is worth his attention. Not out of senseless pride mind you, he is just simply that powerful. On top of this, the guy can also use all the abilities of everyone that are a part of his undead legion, including his immortal commanders. This includes stuff such as having a strike be always faster than the opponent, to never be able to miss, and to always strike with perfect lethality. And that's just the commanders, the rest just makes things even more broken. And just to close things off, as if not all this was enough, his relic also so happens to be the holy spear of Longinus. You know, in case he wasn't overpowered enough already.
I like it when a necromancer type can at least summon a squad of undead. Its always underwhelming when its just 1 measly brittle skeleton. I don't know why necromancers had so much confidence in elder scrolls games lol.
No Magus from Chrono Trigger? The game occasionally calls him a Necromancer, and there's skeletons in his castle. He wanted to save the world by killing a giant planet-eating parasite(Take THAT, Jenova!). 2014 Gauntlet brought back the classic Warrior, Elf, Wizard, and Valkyrie, and added one to the team, a Necromancer named Lilith. But you left off the BEST Necromancer OF ALL TIME! In Torchlight, I taught my puppy companion the [summon skeletons] spell so she could summon bones whenever she wanted b/c she IS A GOOD GIRL! YES SHE IS! :p
A favorite of mine is Old Scratch from Pirate101 he’s a skeleton witch doctor who made a pact with the Dark Crawler a malevolent scorpion spirit. Upon his death it resurrected him as a skeleton with the power to raise the dead. Eventually he gains a new patron Sister Snake and with the help of Mother Spider they imprison the dark crawler. Also he speaks with a thick Jamaican accent.
A Player on the Lich Mythic Path in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous could probably have been on this list somewhere. You raise the dead, ARMIES of the dead and even go through the entire process of going from fledgling necromancer to literal demigod level Lich. Phylactery and everything.
This was an easy subscribe ! as a fan of shamans, druids and necromancers myself I couldn't say no to this video ! awesome stuff. Side note: We are of the same opinion about acti-blizz...
Wesker...that's my choice! Not only did he master raising & mutating the dead. But he's hard to kill, using technology to turn himself into a virtual lich.
I used to play a game called dragonfable. I remember briefly a necromancer in there called Xan that I really liked, he looked like a monk in robes but had a flaming skull. A big plot point involved dragons where both the player and Xan got an egg... Xan ended up with a cute one whereas we ended up with the badass one... Xan immediately made his into a skeletal dragon after seeing it hatch... funny moment... I miss that game... think its still around...maybe...
Should be an honorable mention to the Theurgist/necromancer hero/heroine of titan quest, who besides absorving life force, making a storm of souls, slowing enemies with deathchill aura and mind controling/mind r*pe enemies, He/she can summoning A FREAKING licht king and an OUTSIDER GOD as minions.
In the immortal words of Zee Bradshaw
“If it was easy to kill the high-level necromancer, didn’t kill ‘em”
"Are you familiar with the concept of a glyph of warding?"
And yet pinwheel is a pushover
@@sablonanime650 well think about it Nito would probably already tired of living so pinwheel didnt realize he wasnt still much from Nito
I mean, even when he's putting in the bare minimum of effort, Nito can still fuck you up. It feels like the only thing keeping Nito from seeking revenge on Pinwheel is that...simply put, Pinwheel is just not worth the effort.
Nito: "...eh, fine, sure. I'll probably get more sleep in this cave anyways..."
Pinwheel: "I AM TRULY SUPERIOR TO YOU, GRAVELORD!"
N: "...whatever helps you sleep at night you tri-headed tryhard..."
I’m focused on how he pronounced izalith as Ezalith
Read somewhere that it’s planned by Nito to have Pinwheel in possession of the Rite Of Kindling because he’s weak and wants it in the undeads hands

Also that Nito's soul potentially keeps popping up in subsequent dark souls games.
So, in a way, he may be outliving you even when you kill him.
Here's actually a fact about Elise from Gunvolt:
Sumeragi wanted to control her ability to bring the dead back to life, so they decided to implant another personality into her, unfortunately; this personality ran rampant and caused the entire facility to be almost destroyed and this was the Elise you meet in the boss rush.
@@MajorRibcageIII Another thing about that was that Elise was sent the email by Teseo using his Hack the Planet septima.
I would've added in Mannimarco from The Elder Scrolls. Man managed to ascend to lichdom and then godhood. He's basically TES version of Vecna now that I think of it.
I saw this list and immediately thought of Valder but figured wargroove would be too under the radar. BOY WAS I HAPPY TO BE WRONG
Also will never be over how Valder pretty much hits every single villain stereotype at face value, but his ultimate goal is literally just equal rights for the undead.
Congratulations on getting engaged Oscar and great list.
Technically Ferromancer would be manipulating iron specifically, if it was manipulating metal in general then it'd be Metalomancy
Metalomancy is a very cool concept tbh
True, though since these are fantasy worlds it's often simplified to ferrous (magnetically-reactive) metals.
Though on closer inspection, a lot of fantasy metals either contain or are inspired by iron. Any steel or alloy, adamantite was based on meteoric iron legends, etc.
I mean that why rell was tortured by the black rose. To be used as a weapon if mordekaiser ever returned on Runeterra. Which is why the black rose was formed by Leblanc who betrayed mordekaiser, seeking him below the immortal bastion
True, but still everyone just says Ferro mancy
@@GiRR007 you aren't wrong but that doesn't mean I can't get annoyed about it.
My favorite is Mannimarco, King of Worms.

@@nickyrichtofen yes, but only as leader of the cult.
And most stuff in his boss battle was normal magic rather then necromancy.
So he was represented well as the cult leader, but not so much as a necromancer.

Mannimarco as a kid at dinner: "Manny, stop playing with your food and making meatloaf atronarchs" "BUT MOOOOM! I'M DOING SCIENCE FOR ULTIMATE POWER!"
@@BladeMasterIcarus Not to mention that the true Risen creator & creator of Grima itself was revealed in the Fire Emblem Echoes post game (I THINK)
My pick from FE would be Lyon.
@@GatorRay Yup there also released a book about a year after wards that went into more detail about him

Finally, someone else is talking about Marona!
As a wise man once said: If it was easy to kill the Necromancer... you did NOT kill the Necromancer.

Until then, let's wait and anticipate just what kind of other controversy Blizzard will fall into next year, and I bet it's gonna be worse (then again, I think it's a little hard to top this one...)
Aaaand that's about it.
(And that was before how the tastes of E3 seems to have shifted it didn't pack the same punch as before...)
I mean, could be worse!
But then DS3 kinda ignores that, so take that as you will
God, I like-hate Dark Souls 2.
Actually, Arthas was not the one who taught Kel'thuzad necromancy, that was Ner'zhul the original Lich King, and Arthas only helped in Kel'thuzad's resurrection for it was Kel'thuzad that was giving instructions on how to revive him.
The helmet and that contained both there souls so he counted the lich king in all his forms as one entity for the entry
@@geoshark12 Yeah, I guess that makes more sense.
The only thing that shocks me is that when roasting Blizzard going after fan games you didn't say "That gives Nintendo a run for its money"
Top Ten Video Game Goblins WHEN?
Careful, a certain Goblin Slayer can hear you
@@erichfiedler1481 I'd like to see the fucker try! Though it would be a surprise, it wouldn't be our first encounter.
Necromancers have a special place in my heart. I just have a love for their macabre arts and (when available) playstyles.
check out Pathfinder:Wrath of the Righteous, one of the Mythic Paths you can set out on is the Path of the Lich which culminates in you becoming a full fledged Lich
All right!! New countdown, this is gonna be awesome!!
@@SavageHoundDusk souls born style gods are more like mortals that haven't died yet, like elders but older and with cool magic covenants.
That's why they were scared of her.
most necromancers decide how long you're dead for, the necrodancer decides how long it takes TO die
Wait up, you got engaged?! CONGRATULATIONS MAN! Hope the best for you two!
Honorable Mentions:
*Kan Ra - Killer Instinct (2013)
*Zarok - MediEvil
*The Necromancer - Darkest Dungeon
That Morde 'huehuehue' gave me whiplash Holy shit

*I’ve Been Waiting for this Moment For YEARS*
Same, dude, same.
Another necromancer who I feel deserves a mention:
Archibald Ironfist (from the pre-Ubisoft Might and Magic series), at one point the ruler of the kingdom of Enroth, who, in Might and Magic 6, had a scroll containing a spell powerful enough to contain a literally-planet-shattering explosion (the Ritual of the Void).
I feel that Shaft should have been on the list for literally being able to resurrect himself twice.
I feel like Talion should have at least had a mention on the list.
What a better way to celebrate spooky month than to counting down the top ten spooky wizards.
Three personal predictions: Yveltal or Darkrai from Pokémon, Shinnok or Quan Chi from Mortal Kombat, and Bayonetta.
It’s list like this that make u realize how under represented necromancers are in games.
And then proceeded to zombify the entire world ;7
Now this will probably be one of my favorite top tens
The Lich King(Arthas) out here raising an army of millions of undead soldiers, destroying nations and threatening the whole world
In a mobile game called soul knight, theres a female necromancer that is the best example of a necromancer.
I remember watching this countdown series years ago, and I’m glad that its still going on.
It would seem that he is too obscure to appear on the list, but I would argue that Iratus, Lord of the Dead, should deserve an honorary mention.

Hey congratulations on getting engaged. And thanks for making a list on my favorite school of magic
1st: I see you went as Yorick Mori for Halloween this year.
2nd: I see dead people....and the necromancers calling them!
Necromancers have the best life insurance, free soda included.
"Thanatos is a bit of a...special case."
Between this and top 10 spellcasters, Merasmus has once again missed out on one of these lists
SOLDIER! YOU WERE THE WORST ROOMMATE!!
Here's 2 suggestions: Top 10 Shapeshifters and Power Copycats.
These are characters who can copy/absorb the powers of others.
Yes I am so happy that Gunvolt was included in the list I love that game series
Death is just a Commercial Break, the Real Fun is what comes after.
Deep stuff dude.
This goes up after I get off work, so I’ll be one of the first to see it! Can’t wait to be amazed!! 😁
* Mentions Yorik * A moment of silence for our grave digger, he was done so dirty in Ruination event.

So apparently some necromancers love music. Who knew?
Fun fact about Nito, he's actually composed of the skeletons of all the humans who died when the First Flame came into being.
Ravelord Nito, the only skelebro who's not only a necromancer, *but fucking invented it*
Wesker...that's my choice!
