Noooo don't put the herring on the white bread, that was for the salmon.... Extreme faux pas 😂😉. .. Love your
vlogmas 🎄🎅
Ditto with the mayonaise or remoulade sauce.
Put shrimp on white bread (French bread) too...with mayo or remoulade!
It was neat watching this. I'm American but also half Danish. I grew up eating these foods. My mor passed away in 2017 but I am continuing the tradition of Danish Christmas food. My daughter and grandchildren will hopefully pass it on once I'm gone. ❤ 🇺🇸 🇩🇰
Simpel spaps, one bottle of vodka, one whole organic lemon peel and/or 2-3 organic lime peel and some 30 juniper. Infuse in a jare one to two weeks, strain. Ready to drink in shorts glass.
Derek at 2:58: Talks about he likes the schnapps, then gets placed at a table, where there's a sign right above his head saying "spritteren", which is slang for "the alcoholic".
You got the danish humor down! :D
We thought that was perfect 😂
I'm at risk of becoming depressed! I have lived in USA the last 18 years, and I've not been back in DK for Jul since..
I so miss these meals, and no, Thanksgiving turkey or ham at Christmas does not make up for the loss...
You are not supposed to take sips of the snaps. You are supposed to drink the entire glass in one go
snaps is the danish version of "White lightning! specially the "julesnaps" which holds 47,5 % alcohol. and you are right - down the hatch with the whole glass! one piece of herring= one glass of snaps!!
That "Spritteren" sign could not have been better placed.
Right! A sign of the times we won’t forget soon 😂
A “spritter” is a nickname for an alcoholic
It is also a nickname for sailing trips to Germany in southern Jutland - rather has been. Sure some fun rides I can think back on 🍻 🥳🥃
A shame they no longer exist, it would just be a trip for you 🍻
Yep its in the right place.
Thats guy standing there is exacly what the spritteren looks like 🤣
Julefrokost varies from family to family, region to region. Some become enemies on what belongs to julefrokost or not!
Especially when new families are brougth together. Snaps is bottoms up...EVERY TIME! :D
You should try to be invited to at private Julefrokost, and follow what happens on the table.
God Jul
That looked really good. The two of you are really becoming ambassadors for the Danish lifestyle 😀
Thank you, Morten 😃We love going on these culture journeys and sharing it.
It i had to choose a last meal, julefrokost would be it.
Just imagine to go all in on julefrokost and not have to wake up the next morning 💪
Extra snaps, for sure
The green sauce with the meat is not parsley but green cabbage, also know grønlangkål :)
Looked like an amazing place to eat Christmas lunch
Yeah, we realized that once we started eating 😂 forgot to correct it while editing. I guess we expected parsley sauce and we were overly eager hehe.
It was a lot of fun and overall a good meal, thanks for watching and God Jul Charlotte 😊🇩🇰🎄
@@RobeTrotting parsley sauce is really nice so why not. Grønlangkål isn't to every onces taste but I like it with glaced ham and sugar potatoes at Christmas.
Glædelig Jul, looking forward to more Vlogmas
an extra fun little bonus fact about Grønlangkål, is that some over here on the mainland (Jylland) call it nyslåede græsplæne = newly mowed lawn because it looks like wet grass :P, but its delicious
@@carstenandersenboje9053 oh I have never heard that and love it. I am from eastern Schleswig-Holstein where "Grünkohl" with caramalized potatoes is the most popular christmas dish. Pork cheeks and lung sausages instead of your wonderfull glaced ham though. Will absolutely start calling it newly mowed lawn / frischgemähter vorgarten from now on :D
My Grandpa (Farfar) always said that "the snaps should be small, but come like a hailstorm" ... 🤣😂
Glad to see your enjoying Svaneke beers! I hope you will eventually visit Bornholm (where Svaneke is)! Love you guys, from a Bornholmian.
We will make it to Bornholm in 2022 for sure 🇩🇰 sending love right back to you 😊 and thanks for watching
Absolutely no word on how the pickled herring tastes.. how diplomatic! :P
I really dig you guys! You are kind of role models in the way that - I think - all immigrants to Denmark should have the appetite you have to explore and experience the 'new' country that you've come to. Total respect! Keep up the good work! Merry Christmas to y'all! :)
You guys are danish already, just need the language now. And remember to use a lot of english swear words inside your danish sentences. Thats very danish
Thus vlogmas is so koselig ! Im gjetting my christmas mood ( julestemning) going 🌲☃️🎅 Greatings from your Norweigian nabo!
This is just the real julekalender for me - thank you guys
Snaps comes in a variety of flavors
Tusind tak! Glædelig jul!
you are always welcome here and sweep Christmas Eve with food and all to 👍🏻😊 super good video in making👍🏻
Wonderful recipe sharing.. the food come out perfectly enjoy watching you'll thank you, dear.
The best snaps isn't even Danish, but the Norwegian Linie Aquavit.
I just discovered your channel, and are enjoying re-discovering Denmark through your eyes. Thanks! Also great to see you are thriving here.
I agree with a comment in the video that gravad salmon is probably the best thing about the Christmas lunch. But unless my hearing is really bad, you also said that it's fried which I have to correct: It's cured, typically salt, sugar and dill cured, but not heat treated in anyway. It's also really easy to make at home, so you might want to try that. 😄
Happy Holidays guys!!!
You guys are great! Love from yet another Dane.
Loved your video on the Danish Christmas lunch. Unlike the cookies you presented in a previous video that would have raised my sugar level big time, I can eat most of what you had for lunch. I think I would concentrate on the fish and desert. And on the subject of fish , I think I have a small piece of lox in the refrigerator that I can have for supper!
Nice to see a proper beer. Svaneke is SO good. Even the non-alcoholic version: Don't worry brown ale :-)
Snaps is an acquired taste even for danes. Next time try a dild snaps. It is still strong but milder in taste and goes well with smørrebrød.
Nice to see you embrace the danish food traditions during christmas. :-)
Svaneke is SO good, we tried their påskebryg and then kept trying their beers and have not been let down once! We'll have to look into a dild snaps for sure. Thanks for watching and for the advice, God Jul Lone 🎄🇩🇰🎅
@@RobeTrotting and also, Svenska does amazing bolcher and delicious flödeboller 😉
@@RobeTrotting Svaneke is my home town! If you haven't, you should visit it, it is a beautiful city :) And I agree with Lone, dildsnaps is great.
Surely it must have been a discount julefrokost you guys had there - I noticed with tears in my eyes that the smoked eel was missing - why?
Getting to know other traditions and ways of living is hard but can be a lot of fun. I was working with an american company (FlexJet) in Denmark and we had som americans here. One of them went to the supermarket shortly after arriving and settled in in his apartment. He didn't know much about danish foods but he seemed to fancy a glass jar with a curry-looking sauce and apparently some herring, so he bought a jar and some potatoes. He boiled some potatoes and emptied the herring jar into a casserole and heated it as well. Shortly after his arrival the company held their christmas lunch (julefrokost) and he started laughing when he realized how the curried herring was supposed to be eaten - different cultures and habbits can be very funny
I love your "Vlogmas"(-: Glædelig jul👍🎅🏻🎄
Aw, thank you Mikkeline, we are having so much fun with it and it’s really getting us into the Christmas spirit in a whole new way 😊🇩🇰🎄❤️
Thank you for making my day in These stressful days with examintion. Your videos makes me smile. Btw great video☺️❤️
Aww, thanks for the sweet comment Marie-Louise, and good luck on your exams! 💪
@@RobeTrotting thanks ❤️
I guess that the "parsley sauce" might have Been grønlangkål or stewed kale. The Christmas lunch vary after what region you eat it.. I'm from south jutland, the Island Als, and we serve "julekål" wich is cabbage, boiled/minced and then reheated with lots of butter and cream. Some places you serve it with medister, boiled smoked Meat, and boiled pork. On the cabbage you can put salt and peber. Or do a My mother taught us put a mix of sugar and cinnamon on it. 😋
The best way is to do it over 5-8 hours one mealtype at time and talk/hygge while eating. Its really a danish thing to talk and stay hours around the table…
Hi :) A great hint to go through all of the different food in a "Julefrokost" is only to eat a 1/4 of a slice of ryebread or white bread for them all. And of cause, you need to have no rush. :)
So lovely to see you having a classic danish lunch 😊 Happy Luciaday to you. 🎄
Tak Hanne, it was so nice to enjoy it properly this year. Happy Luciadag to you as well 🕯😊🇩🇰
Klassik i KBH?
Great presentation guys! 👍👏👏 I didn't quite catch what it was you said when mentioning the paté.... Of course on the breaded fish first goes the lemon juice, then some "remoulade" (Danish tartar sauce for those not in the know).
Also worth saying, is that the "julefrokost" can be much more extensive than this. I remember family julefrokosts at my grand-parents when I was a boy, and there were several dishes e.g. leftover duck (w. caramelized potatos), pork sirloin w. sautéed onions (mørbradbøf m. bløde løg)...and then finished off with assorted cheeses (well that's how it was in _my_ family)
Yes, and what about hamburgerryg (smoked and boiled pork) with Asier (pickled gherkins and a Kale sauce), sylte (pork terrine served with beets and mustard), Tarteletter (small puff pastry bowls with a chicken and asparagus stew), Rullepølse (roulade made from pork belly and spices served with mustard, red beets and raw onion rings) and the list goes on and on and on 🙂
That looked very nice. Yes the bread is not just complementary. I like all the food you got except the sweet dill and mustard sauce, I usually just eat the salmon on bread with a squeese of lemon. I also don't drink beer or snaps. But glad you enjoyed it all. 👍
Salmon is delicious with or without dill sauce imo, and it's not just a holiday snack! Lord knows I love a nice cold cut of gravad lox on a hot summer's day, or a fresh smoked salmon by the coast
Du SKAL da drikke øl og snaps til en ordentlig julefrokost 😁
Up in the darkest part of Jutland, on top of what you had we also have a “cabbage serving” consisting of: stewed white cabbage, served with cinnamon-sugar. Stewed kale. browned (sugar glazed) potatoes. Served with cold ham, cold medister sausage, cold pork and strong mustard.
Also warm “leverposteg” served with heaps of bacon and fried mushrooms.
If you don’t need a lie down afterwards, you aren’t doing it right.
Coincidentally the emergency rooms round here usually have an increase in constipations cases round this time of year….
Det der er jo IKKE en Julefrokost! Fårking København!
Yeah, we were hoping for the browned, sugar glazed potatoes. We have a similar dish with yams at Thanksgiving and some people repeat it for Christmas. We also expected duck and had that the first time we did this meal in 2016 :)
@@RobeTrotting duck is more a Christmas eve dish. Julefrokost is more a pork, pickled and stewed affair.
@@mcmariager WHAT! Geese here in WEST-JUTLAND! ..you poor thing ;-P
(i like duck more = Don't tell mum!!?)
Warm leverpostej with bacon mushrooms 😋😍
I recommend Guldgrillen for you guys to try, they serve original old school danish food, and is in Copenhagen.
Re-viewing! God, this looks good! I am not a huge fan of Schnapps but, the solid foods, and especially the seafoods, looks A-MAAAAAA-ZING.
OMG - White bread and "Sild" HAHAHA :D
Derek won't touch the rye LOL
Ha! I have eaten at Karlas many many times - I ALWAYS have their endless stegt flæsk og persillesovs
Aaaaaaand now I'm hungry. Great! 😂
Honestly, smørrebrød is definitely my fav part of Christmas - you get to be with your family and have delicious leftovers and just relax.
I'd say it's definitely one of the most unique part of Danish Christmas with the fact that there's julefrokost EVERYWHERE (friends, family, work etc) and like every holiday, it's an excuse to get drunk 😂
Fun fact; depending on where you live in the country, you might also encounter another dessert that's frequent during julefrokost or actual Christmas Eve - "citron fromage" which is a lemon mousse with a bit of whipped cream on top. It was a BIIIIIG thing in my family growing up that if you didn't like risalamande, then you could get citron fromage instead!
I've never heard of it before .. and have even lived in several parts of the country .. Where does that tradition come from? 🤔☃️🎄
@@brittabrandtoft110 from what I've been told by my grandfather, it's apparently a very common thing in Jylland (specifically Nordjylland) - tbh I'm not complaining, I get a bit of each every year 😂 could also be something within our family, but he said that it was common up there.
@@omnomnom1 It's not an common Thing in Jutland at all.. Maybe a specialt place in nordjutland 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
@@brittabrandtoft110 could be yeah 😄 it's only what my grandfather told me so I don't know how much of it is true since I don't live there.
You can buy gravad laks /salmon and rævesovs from Bähncke( honey /mustard sauce) all year long in most supermarkets
Cheers guys ❤️🍺
good work make some more movies from denmark Merry Christmas
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. And that’s pretty much all of our videos haha 😊
Great! now im hungry! have you tried risengrød? definately worth a try if you want to try your hand at home with a relatively simple christmas meal
We have never tried it - we are going to try to bake some Danish cookies with Derek's mom and if we could add a second dessert, that would be fantastic 🇩🇰😀🎄
@@RobeTrotting what hanne said is absolutely correct! if you plan on having risalamande for christmas, i recommend making risengrød in a large portion for the meal the day before, and then convert the remaining into risalamande, its a stable at our christmas for the 23rd!
Now, imagine sitting at a table filled with all of this, for the very first time with no warning it was at least a 3 hour lunch. And as a vegan! 🤣
I'm dying of laughter 😂😂
next time you eat the fish fillet / the fried fish, try eating remolade (the yellow sauce in the put on the herring) it tastes mega good
Agree. It should actually be forbidden by law to eat it without.
I love how you pronounce smørrebrød xD
Does Derek know what the sign above his head says as he explains what snaps is, I wonder? :D
Next time, maybe explain the potato dishes as well. A fair amount of skill goes into them. Tak!
I enjoy a good Julefrokost, usually I'll do trade offs with my table 'pals'
Some people are not wild about fish and being a pescatarian, I don't eat meat, so it works out very well! 😉☃️🌲🥁
hello from Hundested 🌸❄
BON APPETIT, what ever you have eat. 🎅🤶⛄❄️
Nice video guys. If you want to try the real Danish way of having Julefrokost, it's 1 snaps for each smørrebrød, and no biting them in half.
Theese two Americans have already proven themselves more Danish than most of our fellow Danes, in the way they eat herring the right way, with pork fat on the rugbrød and NOT butter!!!
Hvor fa'en er du fra?
@@dallesamllhals9161 København min ven 😁
@@iRasmus4 AHA! = Julefrokost-hipster-FÅRKING-joke! ♥ Fra Jylland :-P
The honey-mustard-dill sauce is called "Rævesovs". I do not know why, but the best, as far as I know, it should smell like a fox pee.. I havent smelled fox urine so I don't know
Nooooo!!! I'm two minutes in, and Derek just put the herring on NOT ryebread! I'm baffled, because herring goes on ryebread. I don't know if I dare watch more... 😄
When you see danes eating this kind of meal, they do cut the bread into smaler smørbrød an eat them with diffent toppings.
Woah, woah, woah! You're having "smørrebrød" on white bread? What is this heresy!? That is an absolute no-go, genuinely sacrilegious.
They tray of food you described is for both of you or do you each get your own serving?
Herring on white bread (if I see correctly) is not... the normal way 😁
Yeah, we tried - but I think only the queen could get Derek to eat rye bread and like it LOL
@@RobeTrotting Well we just need to find a way to get her involved then :)
Not red onions, but red cabbage 🤗
And you build your own smørrebrød from each course..the trimmings go by strict rules where they belong,……..and..the bread is optional…..rugbrød whenever you need bread except under prawn, gravad laks and cheese
Thanks Jan, I know we didn't get them all perfectly but it's definitely an improvement to when we first visited Denmark in 2016 and tried this meal haha.
Thanks for watching too and God Jul to you and your family 🎅😀🇩🇰🎄
Julefrokost food is what we eat all year 😁
You should go visit Christiania.. A freetown in Christianshavn.... You will never forget this place...
Noooooo, not herring on white bread :-D White herring, lots of onion, good butter beneath (not too much) and a lot of onions on top, yummy!
Wonder why are there so many cold dishes in Scandinavian countries for Christmas? Most of the Swedish Julbord is cold too.
What was the name of the restaurant? I was in Copenhagen last weekend and wanted to present my international friends to some traditional Danish food - Christmas food in particular - but we ended up going to Magasin du Nord and instead got some classic smørrebrød :)
Still a nice treat. We are at Restaurant Karla and we have also had the meal at Puk.
I missed the cheese, in the end ;)
try Porse snaps its easier to chew
Smoked salmon is not the same as gravad salmon, which is raw fish. The gravad salmon comes with the mstard sauce.
I haven't seen this episode before. Nice - mostly! (Except putting all stuff on white bread and 'biting the snaps' in halves - that close to being 'disrespectful'!)
Another thing: The 'Gravad Laks' (and regular salmon, too) IS NOT FRIED!!! It is a smoked and/or salted product
There can also be a cheese plate after the meat and before the dessert, but I might be thinking of 2nd. Juledag. Probably, forgive me. I am an American.
We did get some cheese as well but the video was grainy for some reason and we couldn’t properly fix it while editing.
Or perhaps it was just som Swiss holes in the cheese part of the video ?
Meget fint, men hvor er tarteletterne?!?
Often you also get a cheese and crackers plate. And then risalamande.
Ah, yeah we did but the video was grainy.
sometimes you also eat VARM LEVERPOSTEJ og TARTELETTER too
A julefrokost without (preferably freshly baked) leverpostej is just wrong on so many levels.
Not parsley sauce, but cremed kale, the curly type.
Yeah, we figured that out once we started eating haha. Just assumed it was the natural pairing but we will know for next year 😊🎄🇩🇰
Shouldn't you do something about Blodpølse (Blood pudding)? 🙂
When I as a kid, if you got the almond, the prize was a Marzipan Pig.
The white bread is for the salmon, not the herring :-)
Haha yeah - Derek is a baby about trying rye bread 😂
Herring on toast bread :(, it really need to be on ryebread my friend :)
My family.
We should cut down on the amount of dishes this year..
We could skip
No
Maybe
No
But we really dont need
Yes we do.
Who is bringing the snaps?
A real julefrokost is more than a quiet meal - it's a party and it's often relegated to the evening and may linger well into the night. If you're lucky, you may be involved in several julefrokoster (plural) over November and December and sometimes even into January. Different groups or societies you may belong to may each throw a julefrokost. In a family setting the party side may be downplayed a bit but watch out, the police knows exactly what's going on on the many julefrokoster, so they keep a watchfull eye out for any DUIs. On the real big julefrokost-weekends the public transport service-hours are expanded and sometimes they're free altogether to incourage people NOT to julefrokost AND drive.
Hej Hasse, great point 😊 we cover the “fun” Julefrokost in this video: Surviving a Danish WORK JULEFROKOST: Office Christmas Party in Denmark
ua-cam.com/video/vsOyXA6Q5WM/v-deo.html
Excellent advice on avoiding driving that night 👍🇩🇰
You have to drink Snaps in one and not split it in two. Down it goes. 😬 Do you have a vlog about your work and why you moved to DK? When are you gonna speak Danish in a vlog? I have no clue why youtube recommended you but you are fun to watch. 🥳🇩🇰
I disagree. You taste the snaps better by drinking sips of it often.
I will never learn to like risalamande... and impressively i managed to win the mandelgave when i was 14/15 without eating any of it because my gran still dished a portion for me
If you don't like Risalamande, you are not a true dane! - staring angrily
@@jonashansen8907 lies, i'm just that much of a picky eater. i mean whipping cream and almonds? ew! they can take the brune kartofler and leave the table forever
My grandfather would be very upset there's no blood sausage (blodpølse) ;)
Now that you're masters of our smørrebrød, why dont you make a how to build a ( bear ) smørrebrød the danish way video ? You cohld even get support from a chef or something if you're worried that you might screw up ? You're friends with Traveling Young, so maybe they could help getting someone in? They know everybody it seems 😅
A brit living in Denmark since 1973.
Gravad salmon isn't cooked. It's raw but seasoned and requires the same confidence in your supplier as Japanese sushi, as mishandling can cause excessive bacterial growth.
snaps er altid godt
Did you just put remoulade (the yellow "sauce") on the heering? And did you put heering on white bread?
I know it's not easy, but it sounds like you've been to enough julefrokoster to have learned what goes with what... :-)
It all goes the same place Lars 😂 and it all goes with snaps...
Derek won't touch rye bread, so it was definitely him - I can tell without even looking back at the video. He's really picky though, so getting Derek to try herring is a feat in and of itself haha.
Glædelig Jul to you and your family! 🎄🇩🇰😀🎅
Well, it seems you could get Derek to eat anything by promising him snaps... :-D
Glædelig Jul til jer også!
@@RobeTrotting You are butchering the traditional Danish dishes... Remoulade on pickled herring!
AND on white bred as well ... tsk-tsk!
Ah well. I guess, that's how change starts. Someone just doing it differently.
But don't be surprised if our change catches a few raised eyebrows.
No-one can eat every traditional Danish julefrokost dish in one julefrokost. Some try, but end up halfway through swearing that they'll NEVER eat again!
So not surprising, You missed a LOT of traditional Danish julefrokost dishes.
If You get the chance, do try "æbleflæsk". Fried bacon slices with cooked apples and fried soft onions. That is a classic worth a travel.
If You feel rebellious thy adding a small bite og Gorgonzola on top of Your æbleflæsk. Totally violating any Danish tradition but it tast soo good 😊
only the dessert is seasonal
Are you guys small or is the table just extremly tall
It’s tall and the food is on a serving stand
Salmon is not fried, it is marinated. Remoulade go with the fried fish. Salmon is the only thing that goes on the White bread in round one
Parsley sauce? That is grønlangkål dudes
Sorry, Guys... You must have Rugbrød with that.... Not whitebread :D
Have ever had viewers recognize you in the streets? lol
Yes, every now and then. It’s really nice to meet people and get to have an in person chat when it happens 😊🇩🇰
one of you did the herring /marinerede sild) on white bread. shame. you will miss the taste with the kind om sweet fisk and the bitternes from the rug bread (rugbrød) ;)
Velbekomme og SKÅÅÅÅÅÅL 🍺🍸
You use the wrong bread for the hearings
🫤 it still doesn’t make the herring taste any better
You can’t eat herring on wheat - it is an abomination 😆 …. Wheat is for the laks and the rødspætte and even the shrimps - but herring must always go on rye
