    Vocals can be one of the easiest things we have to mix on a record OR they could leave us beating our hands against the wall after a long mixing session.
    Today, I'm going to help you make mixing vocals a much simpler task by showing you my go-to vocal chain.
    More importantly, I'm going to talk a bit about what I'm thinking and WHY I choose certain plug-ins when I'm mixing vocals.
    A few things you'll learn in this video:
    - My exact plug-in chain
    - EQ before or after compression
    - The parallel compression setting I use on 99% of my mixes and how to set it up correctly
    - A simple way to de-ess vocals and avoid harsh vocal mixes
    - And more...
    My hope is for you to not only steal my settings and deliver awesome vocals on your next mix but for you to learn the why behind this chain so you can begin to hear what a vocal needs and deliver professional-sounding vocals.

    Awesome job completely explaining the how & why in a short & to the point way. Plugin chain screen shots and the order of the plugins in your chains are spot on as well. And even though I already knew 98% of what you were teaching in the video I think I will subscribe now because I feel that in your other videos there will be something maybe I haven't learned yet. The vocals were tracked at NRG. Chester tracked in the live room, in a makeshift booth without a front wall. He used to crank his headphones, hence all the bleed. Great video, dude!

    Hi David. Could you do an in-depth video on your template? Specifically, the bussing, labeling and how you set up and bus to a Print track for the mixes and master. I know you've touched on it a little before, but there's a few things that are unclear. I've already added the, sending instruments to a widening bus for automation and that's been very cool and also some parallel 2-bus compression, but I'd like to learn more about your workflow.

      Thanks, Michel! By the point the signal has reached the compressor I've already shaped the tone (high-passed and cut lows) so the compressor is already reacting to what I want it to. Great observation, though! I use the high-pass/sidechain on the stereobuss and sometimes with kick or bass but not often on the vocal. Thanks again for watching!

    Sorry but fabfilter pro-q when matching two equalizers always create resonance and makes the bass more harsh than before and the sound very distorted with much more bass.
    Pro-Ds also makes the sound dirty when I try to de-ess songs from vinyls that have problem with sibilanc3

    So, what's the difference between the "Vocal Crush" and the "Ld Vocal Level", how do they relate??

    • @TheMixAcademy
      @TheMixAcademy  Рік тому

      Great question. The vocal chain I use starts on an audio track. I route that audio track into 2 busses. The first is parallel compression "Ld Vocal Crush". The audio track and the "Ld Vocal Crush" meet at the "Ld Vocal Level" which I use to automate and send to effects.

    Is the vocals you mix have light compression on hardware while recording or none?

      @@TheMixAcademythanks man can you share the settings?

    • @TheMixAcademy
      @TheMixAcademy  Рік тому +1

      @@zachpitt9249 I would but I didn’t record it. It’s a feel/taste thing, but slow to medium attack, fast to fast(ish) release. Anywhere from 2-3 db of reduction all the way to 10+ db of reduction. I also like to use a second compressor to smooth things out. Sometimes, I’ll even use a parallel chain when recording vocals to deliver a mix ready vocal that sits on top right away. But… I’ll only do that when it’s a hard rock song where the vocal won’t need any dynamics. If there’s a softer section in any song I don’t recommend committing heavy compression as those sections will likely need less to feel more natural. I hope that helps!
