Are there really Pelicans on Big Chicken Island in Lake Erie? You won't believe how many!
Unusual sighting have been happening since 2016 around the Great Lakes- when it comes to Pelicans that is. If you happen to venture way out there, like we do around the boundary waters of the US and Canada, you may come across some islands known as the "chicks". One of these islands, which is actually a reef by the way, called Big Chicken will at specific times of the year leave you scratching your head wondering, am I down south because the island is covered with Pelicans! But no, you are in the Great Lakes! The pelicans will make their way to the island in what seems to be a mile long train toward the island and once there they dance and prance on it's sand, eventually converging around the Jolly Roger flag as to say- Beware humans! Stay away! It's a really unique and fun thing to see.
Researchers noticed this behavior and started tracking it around 2016. They are studying the possibility of nesting in the various locations. Check out some of the resources we found below.

Fishing surrounded by Lake Erie water snakes in the Lake Erie Islands? Yeah, it's a thing.
Переглядів 750Рік тому
Growing up in the Great Lakes as I did, I remember vividly taking family vacations in the Lake Erie Islands, swimming in the Lake toward a floating raft only to be scared out of my mind when that floating raft had what I remember to be a pile of snakes sunning themselves or in my frantic swim away seeing one in the water cross my path. Yes- I'm afraid of snakes. But they clearly have more to fe...

How to eliminate top-hand push in Spey Casting? Think of it like the Double Haul.
Переглядів 8 тис.2 роки тому
One of the toughest bad habits we often pick up in Spey Casting is engaging the top hand, or what we call "Top Hand Push". It's an easy thing to start since we so often also do this as single hand casters when casting single-hand rods. In both cases it's not good mechanics nor generally desired. But have you ever thought of the bottom hand in spey casting like a double haul? In this video Jeff ...

To improve your fly fishing, look at your casting. Here's why you should consider the right coach.
Переглядів 6122 роки тому
Why does casting matter when it comes to fly fishing success? Said another way, Capt Jeff Liskay says; "It's not that you have to be the best/ most beautiful caster, but you need to be comfortable competently placing the fly where it's needed under the angling conditions you are in for more successful fishing outcomes". Quite simply, a day fly fishing for rainbows is going to require quite diff...

this is amazing. I'm a beginner and I am casting well but the more running i try to shoot, the more awkward my casts become. This is simple and straightforward and I can't wait to get out and put this tip to work.

Do you use just a float tip in that slow of an area?

Thanks for the question Yes, you can use a floating tip with a weighted fly but I prefer to use a unweighted fly with an intermediate or intermediate/sink 2 tips when fishing slower moving runs.

Best casting coach I've ever known. Time spent learning casting with Jeff Liskay translates into more fun on the water! His tips on how to apply casting to fishing are priceless. I can hear his advice in my head as I fish the spate rivers of the Great Lakes for steelhead. I catch more, more easily and with much more fun casting because of Jeff. He is also the nicest human being you could hope to meet.

My time on the water with Jeff Liskay has been the most rewarding experience I have ever had in two decades of flyfishing and countless outings with guides. Jeff is brilliant, humble, extremely skilled. He is blessed with an ability to take each client to the next level as appropriate for that client. His knowledge of fishing and specifically Great Lakes fishing of all kinds is unbelievable in depth and finesse. His kindness, generosity and humanity transform clients and pupils into lifelong friends. His lessons "stick", bringing fish to hand long after the lessons or guided days with him. Guided days with Jeff are easily the best fishing memories of all.
