Let's talk about process - Lightbox and Penciling
Great tips! I definitely need to get better at figure drawing this year. The Nexus book looks really useful.
I want to actually finish an art project, either my children's book or a small comicbook. Or actually make my comic strip Induatrial Complex into something coherent
I do want to improve my art skills! Maybe I'll finish drawing through Bridgman this year. In the meantime I'll be watching all the Steve Rude and Tom Pitilli videos I can. Great advice in this video tom!
My experience with self-teaching is that it's much less time-efficient, but far more cost-efficient than any kind of mentorship. When I've succeeded in self-teaching, though, it's usually because I've closely followed a good instructional book, which is sort of like a teacher anyway. I'm not sure what I'm saying, but I'm definitely saying it. Enjoyed your thoughts!
Ohhh man!!! ... I can't believe I never knew they made smaller softcover versions of those artist editions?! They always seemed cool but way too big for me to store in my bookcase so I never bothered. About to purchase the David Mazzucchelli’s Daredevil and the Mike Mignola one. Thanks for another awesome vid!
Yeah, those are awesome, I have a few myself! A fraction of the cost too 👍 Enjoy those two, the Mazzucchelli Daredevil one is awesome!
I agree, erasing is very much part of it particularly when one is an advanced artist because one knows better that how a certain drawing or a pose can be worked out even better with some alterations...I see jim lee do that all the time .. He says his process involves 30 percent erasing and 70 percent drawing ..softening a drawing with a kneaded eraser helps with the second step of refining the drawing ... David finch does it twice in his process.
Yes, Jim Lee is a great example of a great artists who utilizes the eraser as a productive part of his process. The 70/30 estimation is a good rule of thumb. Not being scared to erase and knowing how to use it to your benefit is a big part of growing as an artist, and hopefully one we can all take into 2025 👍
Happy New Year, Thomas. Great disclaimer at the beginning reference really serious artists vs. drawing-mostly-for-fun (and nothing wrong with that). But for us committed artists, let the 'tips' begin! Really good commentary to start off the year with our art studies. Thanks. PS- suggestion: a video on your thoughts about anatomy studies/drawings for comics and illustration- a very important topic.
Happy New Year to you as well, Chip! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! And great suggestion, I'll definitely make note of that. I have some ideas for an anatomy-ish sort of video in the near future, so stay tuned!
@@thomaspitilli Thanks, Thomas. Yes, a video on your approach to anatomy, even including foreshortening perhaps, would be welcome (your influences, books, practices etc.), when of course you can eventually get around to it. Again, Thanks. Chip LIndsey (Atl.)
Great advice, Thomas. Kind of off topic, but I like the way you "Cartoon" your faces, it has a classic feel. Have you ever made a video talking about some of your artistic influences?
Thanks so much, Chris! Faces are my favorite part of drawing people :) I make a lot of videos about specific influences throughout my channel. Hopefully you're able to enjoy them!
2025 is the year of the pencil. Time to crush it this year 👏 thanks for the great advice as always
Year of the pencil, I love it! Have fun with it and thanks for watching ✏️👍
thx for ur video still struggling cuz my illness u remember cuz my right side I was drawing with it so I train my left hand to draw Im drawing as soon as I could
Keep pushing through 💪 You'll be a stronger person and a better artist because of it!
@thomaspitilli i will be a handicap it's hard to depend on one hand
I'm currently been going through an art instructional (Hampton figure drawing) book and copying everything with a gel pen (no pencil). I feel like I'm learning, but after watching this I may try out some of these tips of yours.
Very cool! And I love the commitment of the gel pen, instead of the pencil. Great way to raise the stakes 👍 Glad you like some of these tips. Let me know if any of them work out for you!
I do like the idea of repetition, especially after I have collected many art reference books such as anatomy books. Repetition over those kinds of books with pen will surely add some visual memory for me.
Frank Chow, as I mention in my other comments did a weekly drawing session...And even me was surprises how radical he ereazes the drawing. Worth to look Thomas!
Same to me, after 1 year drawing, I dedect the failure more quickly. But sometimes I saw the problems in the next day. So I have a good idea for you. Show the drawing a friend or partner...you will be surprised how fast somebody detect the problems. My neighbour is great in this. He is a hobby photograph and he has a sharp eyes. He just need ONE look, and he start to critizes...Nose to long, eyes not in the line, mouth to wide...aso..And if he analyses my work, suddenly I saw my mistakes...OMG. GREAT guy! 🤣🤣😂
i apprecite how many variations and possibilties of poses you created ..that s the beauty of this video . good work and shows your range as as artist !
Thank you!
Great video. There is a lot of variety in your sketchbook.
Thomas, the thing in writing, which I did in the 80th to 90th..I wrote a couple of short stories, (inspired by Stephen King and Robert Ludlum, Bourne...) than I start writing a novel, which is not finished yet. So for 30 years I look one time a year in the manuscript and changing sentence, persons, storyline...So on one hand its ok, to let the work rest for weeks, maybe months..BUT in the end, you MUST start to draw and finish the book...think about me....Still unfinished! Sorry about my bad english. I'm from germany!
Good video! I think art school is ok, to develop a fundamental stuff...but workshops in perspective is better...
I studied 1 year in the art school in the 80th. but broke up, because I thought I was not good enough... and music was my real passion...but I gave up because I thought...😂🤣🤣 Thomas don´t forget playing your FENDER Bass😉 I have an FENDER guitar, which I love! Incredible sound! Besides left a abo to support you a little. Musician MUST help each other😘
I'm new on your channel, and I must say, you doing great!! I never knew, that there are roughcuts. Very interesting! The rought cut, to me, looks more cool than the colored version.🤣😂
@@sharky9493 Welcome! Thanks for joining, and I'm glad you liked this one 😊
@@thomaspitilli Thanks for the answer and please look at my other comment and the idea about Frank Cho!
I bought a book long ago from Frank Cho, Drawing beautiful women. I can highly recomment this book to you. He works for marvel, and also for Dynamite comics. Maybe its an idea for a new review video! take care.
it's like you're animating ᗡX
Hi Thomas. Thank you very much for the interesting video! I wrote this comment and will look your other videos, BECAUSE you CARE about your watchers, and ANSWERS the comments (not like other yt guy talking about comics) Glad you find your yt channel😃
Do thumbnails before move on to actual size paper or canvas on photoshop really helps me a lot.
I will always stay traditional but i understand whybsome artists gravitate towards digital sketching.😅
@@unknown-uj9le The Layers feature keeps it less messy 😂
Damn, that paper is taking a lot of punishment!😮😂 Good job, Thomas 🤘
@MarkGoldfine Thanks Mark! It was 2 ply, now it think it's 1 ply 😂
Is this the same for male poses because most of the time I see artist draw male poses and it’s easier so I struggle with female poses more
Wow!
Fantastic in-depth video Thomas thank you. I came across his work watching the strip panel naked on the blackwidow and it awoke me to the way he thinks his pages. youre killing with your work too man.
I need more videos like that. As for me I really love drawing people's expressions and emotions, body language AND interiors. Both are my favorite things to do. Problem is there is not enough interior artists to study from
Whoa, many are gorgeous and several have stylish flare which inspire cuz I make book trailers and original music for comics so liking your pieces that stir the imagination!
Very cool. Thank you!
The drawings in your sketch book show that you're authentic and transparent
I appreciate that. Thank you!
Awesome in depth video wrapping up your sketch book. I'm hoping to fill up more pages of my sketch book during the new year!
Thank you! That's a good goal to have this new year. Have fun with it!
Watched you draw a lot of these. Well done! I have kept a sketchbook myself thanks to your lives and Stay Warm sketchbook. Happy New Year!
Thanks so much, man! It's been awesome to see all of your sketchbook work throughout the year. It really looks like you're having fun. Thanks for always tuning in. Happy New Year!
I tag you on my art on Instagram
Digital art seems too clean you see the imperfections as much as traditional art
Great video tom! My sketchbooks are atrocious haha
Nah, your sketchbooks are really nice, from what I've seen 👍 Happy New Year, dude!
@thomaspitilli Happy New Year bud!!
been working on a sketchbook myself although I'm still a beginner i hope i make more progress or a breakthrough in my artistic skills this 2025 your video is good keep it up man and happy new year
Happy New Year to you as well! And have fun with your sketching journey in the new year!
Awesome sketchbook
Thank you!
It would be cool to see some more artwork by Harry Lucey
Loved the insights and prompts to provide the context for the artwork -- thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, man, glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Thomas- I really enjoy your videos for their generosity of knowledge, your straightforward and clear explanation of your thought process, and your commitment to personal growth and helping others develop. I don't know if you've ever read Ben Caldwell's Action Cartooning and/or Fantasy Cartooning but his work in those books demonstrated the "why" approach to art books in contrast to the "what" approach. Similarly, I appreciate that you communicated the thought process behind a given artistic or storytelling decision. Keep it up!
Wow, that's very kind of you to say, thank you! I'm not familiar with those books, but I'm going to put them on my list right now. The "why" is very important, especially as you get older and grow in this profession. Thanks for the rec!
I love seeing an artist sketchbook it shows kinda what the artist is capable of and also shows that sometimes the art doesn’t have to be perfect. Your art is really good and awesome.
Thanks so much for that, man! I appreciate you checking it out 😊
Another Banger Thomas! Where did you find this sketchbook challenge or did you come up with a whole bunch of ones?
Thank you! I came up with those prompts myself 😊 It was called #Maywarm, during the month of May. Perhaps I'll do it again in the new year!
@thomaspitilli if you do I'd definitely like to see that
Nice!
Thank you!
I'm 33 I started drawing in 2009 and stopped for about 4 years speartly I want to be a comic artist now i had a tumour in my brain that effects my right side from using it its been about 9 years I started to train my left hand nd in 2019 now I can draw with it but sometimes I feel I'm too old to be comic artist and give up my dream is fading away
That's amazing that you have been able to re-train yourself on your opposite hand. Very inspiring 👏 You're never too old in this profession. That's the beauty of it. Stick with it and stay strong!
could you review ur old sketchbook
Check out the first half of this sketchbook in a video from earlier this year 👍
