I think it may be an attitude mindset. An uncommon one that people do not realize, is you may not be open to start and embrace a new game to sink all your time in, so being overwhelmed by games is very understandable. A common issue is having a negative attitude towards a game, tricking yourself to a self-fulfilling prophecy that this game is not going to give you the same joy and excitement as other games you've played. This one can be tied to the first problem because you may not be ready to start something new. The other and I've seen my friends suffer from this, even during a new game they tried, is an overly negative opinion that people have about the game. This feeling can spill over to demotivate you from playing the game, for the things they mention that doesn't seem right for a game to have, will suddenly become noticeable and may begin to bother you as well to the point that you quit. Many companies sadly aren't more about the game anymore, since back in the day, the focus were to make games super fun. Like the director of larian studios said that the ones that will win game of the year, are the game devs that make a game they want to play themselves. Companies like Blizzard, EA and Ubisoft are more marketing than game developing. Now, this does not have to take away that the games they put out there is always bad, but that's where that negative opinion that can quickly destroy any chance of you even trying a new game. I think you first have to just be ready to start a new game. Whether it's one that's overhyped or retro. Both can give you an equally fun experience. P.S.: It's funny this video showed up in my feed since I was talking to my wife about how we used to play games on consoles like Amiga and Atari. There's this game called Shadow of the Beast that came out in 1989 for the Amiga, and today I realized they remade that game in 2016 and I still preferred the Amiga one!

I agree with you on most of your talking points but I feel like there’s quite a few bad examples here. 1. Skyrim having only bugs that are “fun to do and optional” is a joke because I had several Skyrim saves break and becoming unplayable due to Bethesda’s “someone else will patch it” game development style. 2. I think everything your saying applies the ps2 generation and earlier but not the ps3. The ps3 was constantly updating. Almost every time I turned it on it had to update something which meant I wasn’t able to play online. And the updates took literally all night sometimes, and my internet was not bad. So if I wanted to game and I saw there was an update, it literally meant not online gaming for me for that night. Games nowadays update a lot to but at least the updates are super fast. The ps5 specifically has insane download speeds. All that being said said I fully agree with you. Gaming was definitely more fun back in the day. I seem to go back to older games too, and what I like is that if I play for an hour I feel like I actually accomplished something. Like I’ve only have an hour, but I know I could beat a couple of levels of a game. On a modern day game, I can spend the entire hour running from one waypoint to the other and get absolutely nothing done. Making me want to just read a book or something. Anyway, good video.

I'm also fully on the retro train now. Between my phone, my fairly lightweight PC, and a favorite old console or two with cheap enough physical copies to collect I can explore a gigantic pool of old games. The new nonsense is not only way too expensive but also, barring a pittance of exceptions, simply not on the same level of quality and artisanship.

What I can’t stand is how homogenized games are nowadays. The same gameplay, the same hyper realistic visuals, the same generic music, the same soulless, gelatinous environments, and the list goes on. Back in the old school gaming days you would get so much variety between games like Ocarina of Time, Legacy of Kain, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Castlevania, Medievil, Super Mario, Metroid, Deus Ex, Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment, Thief, Jak and Daxter. Sly Cooper, etc. So many different styles of games no matter the similarities, with vastly different environments, music, visual styles, tones, and quirks that just made gaming this never ending realm of variety, possibilities, and passion. Now everything is a copy and paste product that circles the same drain and is too afraid to aim for more unique experiences and risk being seen as childish and/or antiquated. All games now are sterile and uniform, with no unique identity beyond maybe being more egregious in the overt modern political overtones. We were living in the golden age of gaming in the 90s and 2000s, and we didn’t know it. But it’s all too clear now.

My problem is this: When I had few games, I played some of them...but I wanted more games. Those other games that looked interesting...but I just kept buying and buying, and also selling some extra games I got from game lots I bought, I over time I just...stopped playing. I got too much into collecting. And I ended up in a bad spiral where I thought I had to get so many games, but I still never played them. So today I have a huge gaming library just sitting there. I really want to play those games but I'm afraid I'll realize that many of them were completely unnecessary to buy. Some of them might actually be worth money today and may have increased in value, but my huge Xbox 360 library...yeah, those games are probably super cheap today. Anyway, no use in crying over spilled milk, as they say. I'll just need to start going through that extensive game library, maybe film something about it while I'm doing it, producing some content that might give me some money back from UA-cam ads. Today I'm way more picky with what I buy, but I still buy way too many games. Doesn't really feel good, but I do want to play them. Guess I'll just have to put my mind to it.

I got very little time to play games as a dad now. When i got the time all of it gets wasted on installing patches and updates and learning all the complicated mechanics of the game again... you have now always the feeling of not getting the full game because you didnt buy the 100$ gold edition. When I discovered emulation I mainly used it for traveling purposes. I’d hook up a bunch of emulators and games to a laptop cause I didn’t want to bring my consoles with me in luggage anymore. It is still that way for me, but it also turned into what it is for me now which is, I learn about some hidden gem I missed from an older era that I want to check out and the chances of it ever getting rereleased are very low, so I’ll emulate it. There’s also several arcade games I love that never got ported to anything so I’ll emulate those too.

There’s a whole list of really cool licensed games that not many know about either because they only released in Japan or because they just flew under the radar for one reason or another, and going back to arcade games, some like Captain America and the Avengers which is unfortunately more known for its bad NES port than the OG arcade version that’s really good and pretty ahead of its time for a late 80s beat ‘em up.

i think another issue is the focus on multiplayer over single player. The multiplayer aspects were usually a second thought, while the story mode had most of the effort put into the story and gameplay mechanics. Now we gotta focus on balancing the multiplayer, the servers, hackers, the meta weapons you should use, the characters you should use for your team to win. All of that kinda muddies the water in terms of how much fun you have, and most developers are focused on making money from this title, and even tho that is important for the success of the franchise, but there needs to be a focus on actual innovation in gaming.

You've mixed up piracy with emulation; uploading and downloading for free is piracy, emulation is playing a game through means without using original hardware (such as Xbox discs in an Xbox 360.) You said about not wanting to pay the extortion of some resellers(rightfully so), but that's piracy, emulation is a different beast altogether. Right concept, wrong context. Good video though, I agree with it despite that.

I've been playing since '97, I've never experienced a gaming period like this. Everything feels boring, playing games feels like a chore. I used to play games for the challenge, I've been growing with the idea of "beating the game", or to experience games that make your fantasy fly so far away. Today's days I can only find this kind of values in a little few games from big companies, like Fromsoftware (Capcom too sometimes), and some indie games. Sony is completely lost, ps5 is such a let down. The new gen is such a let down, it's selling just by the name at this point. RN, I'm still on my ps4pro, having fun with MH Sunbreak. I canceled my ps+essential sub too, such a wast of money. Sometimes I grab a less known title. I'm pretty satisfied within this dimension, but I can't stop thinking of the huge disappointment the VG world is rn. P.s. I also liked to collect games too, so this "everything digital" thing of modern consoles is another negative thing for me. This plus being obliged to have just 1 digital store to buy from. Buying digital on consoles makes you own NOTHING. Once you stop spending money on subs or the major stop supportoning the older gen, you find yourself with nothing. Consoles have 0 attractivness to me rn, they're pretty much volatile service cash pits. I'm just saving for a PC.

The way developer at that time try to work around the constraint of hardware spec with some very clever approach is amazing and eventually all they focus on is to make player feel excited throughout the game. Now, games are just so similar in so many ways and try to milk the players with microtransaction 😂

the problem with videos like this is gaming has been around for what almost 4 decades. You have so many games to play that now that modern aaa games can be ignored. Indies came out swinging this year so who cares if we have a bunch of mtx games dont play them. I only played valorant and marvel rivals this year and proceeded to beat 52 games this year. Their are so many games now that this conversation is just dumb especially when you are complaining about a section of gaming that really doesnt take that much up. Also games back then had bugs and if it shipped with a game breaking bug then you better have known about it or that save is gone. I like modern gaming especially with modders being able to fix up older games. I know one thing is if you arent pc gaming now then you are really missing out. Went pc gaming in 2021 and i havent looked back.

Following the industry for as long as I have, through the fall of Star Wars, movies in general, video games, etc.... The common denominator seems to be that they're hiring teams, including writers, artists, etc. straight out of universities, and they're almost exclusively indoctrination centers now that don't really teach anything but how to put post-modern/gender theory politics into everything. This is just a constant, and continually degrading process, and explains why every piece of "art" now is inundated with these messages, and lack any actual GOOD content, like a relatable, human story (like the classic hero's journey), good gameplay, clever and new ideas that aren't just sequels/remakes, etc. And this would explain why it just keeps getting worse, not better, and why these companies/studios keep making the same CRAP despite losing so much money. I don't know if this will be a problem that will be fixed before the industries sink themselves, honestly. The message is the priority, not the money. And if they aren't making money, they'll just cope, lie, or misunderstand and say "oh, people just aren't interested in this kind of thing then" rather than, "oh, we should just change it and do better, they're just not interested in that approach." For example: superhero movie fatigue. It's not that people are tired of superhero movies, they're tired of them being TRASH. This same sickness has infected video games, and there are now special interest groups involved in every process, and things have to meet a certain "code" rather than a level of artistic QUALITY. Even if people don't realize it, this is a large part of why people (like you, and myself) just go back to the simpler times, when people understood good story and good gameplay---back when we actually came up with interesting NEW stories and didn't just copy old ones that worked for reasons people can't fathom today. What is being made now is just some hollow mockery of what we used to make, or it's complete garbage used as a vehicle for people's (or whole companies') personal politics. Video games are really no longer a medium of art, but a moneymaking scheme with a political purpose. Which is ironic, because the latter prevents the former. Games, movies, art of any kind, will only get good again once the industries understand why they're failing. And I don't think that will happen before all mediums are destroyed. As long as they keep hiring from increasingly ideological places void of artistic integrity (pass around employees from other companies, hire university grads), they will continue to sink. Even then, they still won't get it because they'll tell themselves, "oh, people just aren't interested in games or movies I guess." rather than "oh, people just don't like the way we're doing it, let's reassess and make a good product."

That s why often indie games are more fun to play at than high budget titles...

I can certainly understand what you mean. Lately, I've also been playing games that would be considered retro by most people. The reason is partly that I haven't been able to upgrade my hardware in a while. But even when my hardware was current, I still didn't play that many current titles. Anyway, it's good that you've found something that works for you. I'd suggest that you also try some modern AA/indie games. I'm sure you can find stuff you will enjoy.

    Soul Reaver. Brings back memories!

I have been gaming since 1994, and I played soul reaver back in the day and am playing the remaster now, and find the lack of waypoint very annoying and time wasting. And some of the ways you progress in this game are nearly impossible to guess. Like having to run circles around an object to activate a newly gained power on that object, when nothing in the game tells you that's how it's done. Some really shady designs back in the day. Or fighting Dumah and dying repeatedly, with the game never telling you the only way to beat him is backtracking all the way to a furnace. I find myself having to watch walkthroughs online to find solutions to most things in this game. No wonder I never completed this when I first played it decades ago. I much prefer the user friendly approach of today's games. They respect your time a lot more than these old games.

I started playing "Ocarina of Time" again for the umpteenth time, but now on a PC hooked up to my TV, with widescreen hacks on, and a wireless N64 controller. It's pretty dang awesome.

Modern single player games are often too large and the multiple player experiences are too aimed at addicting people. I just want a bit of fun not multiple Skyrim's per year or a new vice in my life. I'm happy with one of those every 5 years. Elden Ring recently and they are still bringing stuff out for that which is awesome.

Hey mate, nice video! I feel that you wont like what Im about to say but the truth is that this is a problem of our political-economic system, aka captalism. So when gamers say "the industry must do that..." sorry but they won't, bc they wont swin against the flow, they wont work different from what captalism expects. They can't, actually, bc they must fulfill the bourgeoisie financial expectations, otherwise bourgeoisie shut the company to look after another thing that gives more money. The industry is aware of the problems, that is not a whoopsie doopsie, its just that how captalism works. The modern games are generic bc that is the low cost/high reward path. To put soul into a game you need time, and time means loss of money. The bourgeoisie learned that what brings money is mkt, not a game with a soul, and that is what they do. A mkt campaing rises more money than a good game. That's a lesson they didn't learn in 90's, and that's why old games have their soul. I know its sad bc Im a gamer too. What I do is look up for indie games, not bc they are good guys but bc indies simply can't pay for a good mkt campaing, so they only have the choice to make a good game. Not always they achieve that, but its just a matter of having a higher chance than triple A's. I also avoid crowdfunding since it could leave to a problem where the dev achives his financial goals and stop working on the game.

Part of it is growing up and realizing gaming isn’t “new” to you anymore. Anything can become boring.. that being said I’ve gamed for 23 years of life and I can say that older games had a unique simpler aspect of just fun… some new games are more polished and less unique and less fun and charming.. I still like new games but a lot of old stuff is better to just get on and play for an hour of your time.
