Homebrew Rules for Mutants & Masterminds

In case you are unaware, homebrew rules are self-created rules that you can use at your own DM table when you are playing a TTRPG. In this video I go over four of my favorite homebrew rules for the 3rd edition of Mutants & Masterminds; although, you can probably use these homebrew rules for any edition. What about Jack of All Trades? It only costs 1 power point and you can use untrained skill
Thanks for uploading these videos and discussing this stuff, I had a little trouble wrapping my head around how all this works with the rulebook alone, so being able to just listen to the break-down of how each of these mechanics flows into each other while i have the rule--book open in another tab to keep the formulas for each roll handy, Its made it way easier to get a grasp on things. Thanks for the help!
my domain expansion is very evil but... i am going to say it Domain Expansion....... Black space the domain is that u cant see nothing but only hear screams and i do it to my dream to good people :>
saying that a roleplay game could be based on a videogame while showing baldurs gate on screen was lowkey hilarious
Just bought this and the iconic hero solo rules! :D
It may be 3 years after the video came out but I still just wanna give a quick thanks. I'm new to the system and I'm hoping to run a one-shot eventually, so right now I'm making the villain for it and this playlist has been super helpful in helping me grasp the concepts and ideas. I've been watching your video on a step of the process then using the book to get down to the specifics and write stuff down, then repeat that for each other step and I really think the book alone wouldn't be approachable enough for me to really understand what I'm doing
If you introduce Naruto, as Boruto's dad!! then you need to rethink your whole life.
I'm trying to make a gray Jedi wookie and have never played only dnd
Did you include the 2nd edition Mecha and Manga into your decision making?
Bet with the grace of seven tails I weave reality anew each reflection a shadow each shadow a truth DOMAIN EXPANSION SEVEN TAILED COPY
I feel like the best way to make a stand in m&m would be to either use the summon effect, have the stand just be flavoring for your character's abilities or both. Some stands don't move far from their user and often assist with movement and combat. Star platinum for instance only ever moved a few meters from jotaro and aside from time stop only ever punched, so jotaro would just have protection and ranged attack to act as his stand. Noriaki kakyoin on the other hand had hierophant green which has a range of 20 meters and limited offense, so he'd have a summon effect. Stone free would probably be a mix of both since it's range varies and it's string is used on it's own.
While summon is probably the right move, you could always just flavor certain abilities as your stand or it's abilities. Like protection is just your stand guarding you while ranged damage is your stand punching people.
Do you have a link to this fillable sheet? Awesome work, thanks for the guide.
Another go to character example would have been Superman or spider-man since they’re kinda also well known
Not as cool as anime unfortunately
Great video. Trying to start a game again and I always get confused by some of the wording the book has and you explain it better
what would i do if i had a character that can create things using hardlight, but beyond the parameters of the create power, like making things more advanced beyond the handbook example of a hinge?
Thanks for all the helpful info and tips
You got a link for that chr sheet?
Brazil Mentioned 🇧🇷🔥🔥
How about the barrier part of the domain expansion? Would the create effect limited to close rang, and a hollow sphere shape work for this?
I'd say so, link the two effects so that the barrier is created followed by the actual effect of the domain. Or the reverse if you're doing mahito's 0.2 domain expansion. And sukuna's would just be increased range
Hey, weeknight heroes. Can you please do a who to build video on the Dishonored character, Corvo Attano.
pls next time do a video too using the official charchter sheet on roll20, is free, could really help a lot of people
My wife and I got this game, and had trouble figuring it out. Your vids are really helpful.
Holy fuck, you're a legend dude. I appreciate the help, I've been wanting to get into M&M and this helps. Keep it up
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'm trying to make a MHA oc and was failing horribly thank you
How do i make mahoraga, New player that want to make a tank
How would you create a assassin-like character? Able to hide in the shadows and pop out for damage? How close would it resemble the Agile Fighter?
Pretty close! I would rely on that and make use of the Hide in Plain Sight advantage so that you can make Stealth checks to hide at any time really
You are great bro from one forever dm to another I appreciate you
You are doing great. Thank you for doing these videos. Im a forever dm since 3.5 and I love these vids 🙏🏼🥰
Thanks! This was so helpful!
Happy I could help
I need that spreadsheet

@@WeeknightHero thank you 🙏🏻
I am having trouble understanding most of this, most likely because I do not watch anime. like guy throws and attack, ok what stats are added together to get the results? because the guy has the "something something whatever" he uses his action to stop the guy but it fails, the what? and how? I had to watch this video like 5 times and crack open the book to try and understand this. what I could grasp. 1. initiative, no problem. 2. active defenses, ... you said the word active defense, no idea how it works. 3. injuries and recovery, their is a pain scale but damage did nothing because of a power. 4. general tactics. just hitting someone repetitively is not the best tactic.
The combat video series had a lot of the answers you’re looking for! I would start with combat basics

@@WeeknightHero I have it bookmarked so I can go back and use them when I do campaigns
@@WeeknightHero I have been going thru thous videos for a week now and I am still in the same place, so something must not be clicking. 1. Does abilities effect combat. like if I have a fighting of 15 do I add that to my parry (if I have a fighting 15 and a parry of 5, is my active defense 20 or 5) 2. I understand what strength is I would like to know how it is implemented . Like if I due a damage 5 on someone and have a strength of 5, is what I am doing 10+15 for damage or is it just 5+15. 3. when attacking someone does only the attacker roll 2 dice or does the attacker and the attacked roll two dice to determine hit and damage.
This sort of conversion is great. I am currently in the process of converting my Pathfinder 2e (previously D&d) game into a M&M one. At first this sounded insane, but the campaign as a whole was always so ridiculous and over the top it could only be described as anime, and even in the much more high-powered system that is Pf2e I still often had to homebrew stuff for some of the more exaggerated powers (especially for the villains). Of course, they'll still be narratively playing Rogues, Fighters, Rangers and all that, but now they'll live up to the status of "legendary heroes" they've achieved over time, and their more insane ideas, like the plague biopunk style mutations of the Fighter, the previously lost elemental powers of both the Ranger and the Paladin, or our Thaumaturge who wanted to awaken his draconic lineage to LITERALLY turn into a Dragon, all of these are possible now and fairly easy too. One other interesting thing is that the players will finally be able to live up to their villains narrative-wise. Their first narrative antagonist was introduced splitting a ship in half with her Air Elemental powers, flying, summoning Elementals, and in their final fight she cut off the wing of the dragon she was riding, lifted it up with her wind powers so that it would still fly and once the team killed the dragon she altered the entire scenery of the fight with a flourish of her spear and began the most anime fight in the whole game. Mechanically, the players were always strong enough to beat these exaggerated villains, but narratively the only way they could SOMETIMES emulate this same level of over-the-top power displays was when they spent hero points, they were normally nowhere near this absurd, as exemplified by the fact that, once they defeated the villain I just described, they did the whole "turn her good" thing and a player whose character died on the fight began playing as the redeemed antagonist, and wouldn't you know it: I had to nerf her in-story to make her fit as a normal Paladin. Now, in Mutants and Masterminds, I have no doubt in my mind the players could reach this same level of absurdity, and even the Paladin herself could once again be as ridiculous as her villanous self once was. The game might still be all about swords and spells, but they always were superheroes.
My only issue with the example is the use of Naruto. If you don't have any idea of the powers, abilities or characters, it's going to go over people's heads and really lose people.
That might be fair. From the metrics I get on here it seems like a majority of the people would have a good understanding of Naruto. Thankfully the fight itself is not so complicated to make it difficult to understand
@@WeeknightHero Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm coming at it from when I was a new player and how the information is taken in as I'm teaching a new player. Because I don't watch Naruto, I would have been fixed on the names that everything around the powers and abilities would have done more to confuse me than to understand the basics of how combat works. Now,combat makes sense, day one all I saw was "To do combat you fimflane into the grape jelly and hoppledope and roll dice" lol I guess my fear is that a new player that doesn't know much( like I once did) will come to watch the video to learn the basics and might get confused. I could be wrong. I could be flat out wrong here.
0:18 ummm, what's this lol
😅😂
Loving the videos! They've been a huge help in learning the game! I want to run a game of my my own with my friends but i bet itll be a while 😂
Thanks! Glad they've been helpful.
Man if only we had a show about this Naruto fella, that would be awesome
Thank you very much. Very helpful as always. :)
Glad to hear it!
I apologize for seeming nagative here. I appreciate all the people on youtube who are putting out these videos to help me learn a complicated system. You gave a heart to my previous comment, so hopefully, you'll take this as constructive and not simply complaining. No one seems to be giving examples of what they're explaining in any of the mutant and mastermind videos I've seen so far, not just you. It would be nice after a rule is discussed to see it in action. "For example," and then play out a scenario, would do a lot to help a viewers understanding. Again, thank you for making these videos, I know it takes a lot of work
No harm done! I knew what you meant and I think it’s a valid comment to make. My intention is do more of these types of videos because of how much people want them!
@WeeknightHero thanks! I'll keep an eye out for a mock combat tutorial. One just looking at a character sheet and going through and explaining what the short hand stuff means would be nice, too. Like, why are their movement distances next to some of the offense abilities, and combat skills vs offense abilities, off the top of my head.
This should have been the first video. You need to understand how ranks in abilities and powers are going to be applied so you can conceptualize how many points you want to spend in things. Everything before this lacks an understanding of gameplay. The second video should have been a battle tutorial that applied these and taught attacking mechanics
Given how star platinum is used and how Dio uses the world I think it’d be an array. Requires activation, regular action, teleport with a limited range. A subtle quickness power (when he quickly lights fires or swats the rat’s needle out. Additive power of Enhanced Advantage Seize Initiative (Jotaro stopping time to get the first move in). It has enough effects that it probably is its own big power set
Yup, but that would be in the array of the stand so that mitigates the costliness somewhat
Another note I’m thinking of is that a Time Stop beat down is a Perception range damage attack linked to a teleport, limited to being within range of the damage target
@@WeeknightHero yeaaah it would have to be. Either that or a few different powers to be used at once with an alt effect Star platinum has too many niche one off powers to be within any reasonable power level limits
This gets into a more advanced look into combat where the main thing you might decide is if it’s better that your time stopped opponent can always be hit, or if being able to perform a Finishing Attack instead is better in the long run
Ive been smashing my head against a wall trying to understand this game for 3 months now. Struggling but getting there i think. Actually planning a one piece game so this helps. Gonna start it low power and have the power boosts every few games or so
Sounds like a great campaign!
@WeeknightHero it should be if I can get it off the ground haha. I'm too used to 5e dnd so it's been slow. But I've been running a few mock combats to try and understand the rules. Slowly but surely. Got the first campaign villain worked out, a pirate that turns into a giant jelly fish. So lots of environment hazards. Clones for minions. Poison touch. Elongate, multi limbs. Think I'm gonna have a bigger "hero" come in to save them to and accuse them of being pirates to get the campaign going
It’s official…I’ll never convince my friends to play this.😢
Never say never...
Do you have a template for the google sheet ?
bit.ly/MMCharacterSheet yes we do right here
