For me service charge is a scam I'm paying so much money which I don't see how it is spent.I suspect too high cost ,using brokers, some of these money going to the owner ,lobby group like insurance agreements .How it is painful when I see they building modern council houses with solar panel and I have to dream about it and pay plenty of money which I don't see like 6000£ for cutting an acre of grass..They pay much less for new houses .Of course my house is not old built in 2004 but it was built when energy was cheap .Can you imagine how much money you could save over a decade ? Turn this around: 1) Keep your addresses up to date, it will help prevent fraud 2) Pay your bills. And on time. If you're struggling ENGAGE with your creditors, and prioritise your most important bills - keeping a roof over your head, keeping food and electricity working 3) USE a credit card. At minimum i) Internet purchases and ii) fuel (gasoline). This is because under UK law you have section 75 protection for purchase made on your credit card, and also it helps with Identity theft/misuse. If your credit card is compromised the chances are the provider will know before you, and given your spending patterns (which will quickly become apparent) it's obvious to the provider if this pattern has changed (e.g. suddenly buying expensive clothes). There's the added benefit of protecting your current (checking) account from being compromised, which is a major hassle. 4) Personal loan. If you're regularly failing to clear your credit card balance, consider balance transfers or a personal loan. The aim is to pay this off, NOT build up debt, but all of this is sound personal financial management. As for building your credit score, this will follow by good practices.
@3:05 🤣🤣🤣 On a serious note, you are correct. Less is more and we have soo much stuff that really bogs us down. There is satisfaction in having a simpler lifestyle. Once we realize that keeping up with the Jones's is not a they way to happiness and that the Jones are broke AF, and having money in the bank is superior to making car payments, life becomes a lot better! For many years we paid our bills with a paper check via the post. The reason for that was we didn't budget and we were always short of cash so we paid bills on the last day possible. It took a lot of time but now we have all of our bills on auto-pay. We keep enough in our checking account to cover our bills, we have auto-pay into our savings and brokerage account and what is left goes to recurring bills and fun. So there are days when I have no money in my pocket but we are still putting via auto-pay a serious amount into our retirement, brokerage and savings accounts. Because of this our savings rate for the last 2 years has been 50% of our income. Not too bad!
Most of my friends are like Lily. I'm more like James. It wasn't always like that.
@@thomaschew2191 Hey Thomas, A lot of people are like Lily & don't even realise the effect it has on their future to have no savings! Thanks for watching :)
Hi Jodie, I'm in the USA, we here in this country do not know how to manage our money. Everyone is a mess! Well I don't want to be too hard on them because it wasn't until 7 years ago we were in the mess with them. One day we decided that we make too much to be this broke and our retirement savings didn't look very impressive. I think the hardest part was simply making the decision to lay if all out, be honest with ourselves and make a plan to get on track. In March 2018 we had US $130K debt so it looked impossible but we forged ahead and little by little then a little more by a little more, we started to make progress. We stopped using debt to buy things and threw literally everything we had at out debt. Finally in Dec 2022 we were debt free including our home. What a great feeling that was! We set up an emergency fund of 10 months expenses and from there started to invest. We have: my 401K and Sue's 403B retirement accounts, our high yield savings account, a ROTH IRA (2 of them) and a taxable brokerage account and a stash of precious (gold and silver) metals. The main things is we have savings goals, before we were like the cowboys, shooting from the hip. We pay for our needs as they appear, we save up for our wants and get them only when we have the cash to buy them. I know that there are some people that due to circumstances beyond their control will have money problems no matter what but for the bulk of us we live at a time where we can set ourselves up to be successful with money but we need to make saving and investing a priority. Love your message Jodie!

Are you a professional financial advisor?
@@mike8631 Hi Mike, No I'm not a financial advisor, but have worked in finance for 10 years. Just sharing what I do. Of course, reach out to a financial advisor if needed.
@@Jodie_Brook It is absolutely mind-blowing to me that someone is able to give financial advice to thousands on youtube and not be subject to the same regulatory responsibilities, authorisations and requirements of an actual financial advisor, who will likely only reach a fraction of the people you will with this channel. Maybe I will start up a medical channel and start giving medical advice to people as a doctor would. Absolute madness.
Its dependent on ypur financial circumstances. I ve certainly been poor. I've had 15 dogs, 4 currently, never had pet insurance. Of the 11 that have gone and my eldest is 14.5, I have absolutely been better off not having pet insurance.Of the 11, one cost 4k over her lifetime, but even then, I wouldn't have broken even. Insurance companies do not lose money overall. My opinion, set up a savings account.
Personally, the sense of relief is worth it for me. £12 a month for pet insurance is better in my opinion than a £2,500 vet bill out the blue. Did you ever have a surprise big bill from the vets having 15 dogs?! That's a lots of doggos!

I pretty much use it for every purchase, but I treat it like a debit card and pay it off everyday. Would you recommend not doing that?
@@Hako_ware if you pay it off straight away this is grand, especially if you use it for groceries and pay back straight away it's a tactic to grow your credit score. But why do you rely on Credit card all the time and not your debit card?
@Jodie_Brook At the time I set everything up I wanted to build up my credit score, and I didn't like having too much money on my debit card, so using everything on the credit card I felt safer if I lost my card.

Would you have your emergency fund in the bank or in an online platform which typically provided higher interest? Generally, would you care if your emergency fund gets interest?
@@Marble8King Hi, the main thing for an emergency fund is that it's always accessible, you don't want to lock it into a higher interest account thats fixed for a few months for example, in case something happens and you need the cash. But yes if you can get a higher interest savings account such as Chase in the UK that's what I use (was 4%, currently 3.5%), you have full access at all time. There are higher ones out there, so a quick Google will help you find the right one for you. If you can let it earn interest, it's free money so why not. Thanks for watching:)

But shiny things are pretty.
@@keynesianeconomics4113 😂 You have a point...
@jodie I will suggest that the total liquid asset someone has should never be accumulated in one financial institution or bank. I am talking out of experience. Here in EU, the bank guarantees safety to your liquid assets upto a max of 100000 euros. Amounts crossing that are always at risk of not being refunded or recovered in case a fraud happens. Now, even with amounts lesser than that, banks can collapse. This was almost the case some months back where I live. It didn't ultimately, due to last moment bail outs but those couple of weeks were absolutely nuts for us. So, at least 2 banks should have your savings

Hey, just wondering, do you think £100 a month into snp 500 is a good enough amount? Ik it’s a personal thing, the amount you can afford to lose but just wondering what your personal opinion is on it?
@@keddysowelsmusic a good question, so £100 is the minimum amount you can set for Vanguard for example, although you can do smaller amounts with other brokerages. It also depends on your risk tolerance, as well as how much you earn. So if you earn £4k a month , £100 is a drop in the ocean. Interesting that you said 'the amount you can afford to lose'. Yes you may money with investing but the goal here is to allow compound interest to grow and improve the pot of money you have over time. I recommend you use the 'compound interest calculator ' on Google, it shows how much money you can earn if you invest £100 for 10 years versus if you invest £500/month for example. Thanks for watching :)
Good video Jodie. Some people say you know who your real friends are when you lose everything or hit rock bottom. Controversial I know but I find people in London to be very individualistic. This could be the same in all big cities. Also really hear you when you say do you really want people around you who are not actually happy to see you succeed in life and who essentially bring negativity into your life. Cut them out. The reciprocal example you mention also can be emotional- it should be a two way street. Anyway Happy New Year when you get there!
Hi, Fist comment 😊. As I said in your previous shorts I am your recent subscriber and I saved 10% of my income as soon as salary credited. I have a doubt, paying for your insurance premium (monthly around £167) goes into needs or savings? I believe this is a need which I am going to pay for next 12 years. And, I gave some pocket money to my son (£20) which he won't spend without my knowledge. Can I consider this as savings as well? Will contact you after the website launch. Have a good day 😊
@@hemalatharajan4067 Hi, depending on what the insurance is for, this would most likely be a need yes. Such as medical insurance in America, or contents insurance for your home. Pocket money isn't considered as 'savings' as it's not for your savings account or guaranteed to be saved by your son for example. Good luck with your budgeting & Thanks for watching the channel.

So the assumption is that you make twice as much as you need.
@@JimFortune Hi Jim, so yes 50% of your monthly income to cover all of yours needs essentially, 30% for wants and 20% for savings. So yes you could say hey make sure you make twice the amount of your needs to ensure you have enough for savings and some treats for yourself. Emergency funds should be a savings pot of 3-6 months worth of your Needs Bucket too, in case anything bad were to happen you're covered there
