I hope Dominica can resist the tide of popularity in expect to sweep over this beautiful place. As the word gets out about Dominica because of whale watching, natural beauty, and the wonderful people. 60 recently had a feature on their sperm whale preserve. Cruise ships are increasingly docking with thousands of guests. I know the Dominican people need to use all their resources to enhance the island’s standard of living. But after our very short cruise stop, I want to go back for a longer stay. I really want to explore this beautiful place. At the same time, I don’t want Dominica to change from the hidden gem that it is. It’s tourists like me whose first thought is generally of their comfort and convenience that are a curse and an asset. I hope it can somehow minimize the former and maximize the later. I can only hope.

Things that I’ve done on Catalina Island, that no tourist knows about: 1. Disconnecting the lights to my Honda 70 and riding the horse trails on a full moon night. 2. Riding a Big Wheel from the summit down to Avalon, on a full moon night. 3. Riding a CZ 125 down Front Street at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. 4. Driving Golf Balls off of Three Palms Point, into Lover’s Cove, while the Glass Bottom Boat floats below. 5. Sneaking Beer into the Casino Movie Theater. 6. Worked at Lloyd’s and cooked TONS of Salt Water Taffy. 7. Climbed the Mt. Orizaba tower on a cold, foggy winter’s night. 8. Climbed too many hills that were dangerous, due to the brittle shale rock. 9. Ordered all the ingredients to make super black powder, water proof PVC pipe bombs. 10. Played drums for an Islander Rock Band… there’s more, but I think you get the drift… 😀

You say that travel cards don't offer enough benefits but are you aware of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card travel benefits? Delayed baggage ($100 per day up to 5 days), lost luggage ($3,000), Emergency Evacuation ($100,000), Travel Accident ($100k to $1M), trip delay reimbursement ($500), Trip cancellation/interruption ($20,000), Emergency Medical and Dental ($2500) and Medical and Legal referral assistance. The medical might be a bit on the low side depending on the country but that is the only benefit I beef up with extra coverage. It's pretty comprehensive.

I lived on the Nature Isle for 16 years. Actually, I would still be there if Hurricane Maria hadn’t destroyed my home and my rental cottages. I was in Belles at Zen Gardens, the heart ❤️ of the island. It truly is a magical place.

The news piece said his travel insurance was $79. I’m looking at a cruise for just $5000 and it was more like $500. Where did he get such good insurance for so cheap?

We are thinking of a Med cruise mostly Greek Island, Italy; we will be in Spain in a year and would like to leave from Barcelona (but realize that might not work out), but my biggest question is is there a "slow" cruise, where we can take long days or even two days, more leisurely pace (we are both over 60)? I see most cruise lines have a heavy and fast schedule. Much thanks for any thoughts or help!

Very bad experience with Travel Guard. I lost part of my luggage, had several cancelled flights and while I was abroad it was almost impossible to communicate with them. In the few times they answered they played ping pong with me. Things like “ I will put you thru some department which never happened or just waiting on the phone for 20 or 30 minutes and nobody picking up the phone were very common. I was exhausted and defeated, so I capitulated. Very sad. Travel Guard is the worst.

I found a plan through John Hancock that let me purchase just enough for my initial trip deposits and I can add the full covered amount as I purchase other trip components. This was essential to me since I’m putting a long trip together 14 months in advance that has two cruises. I needed to buy within two weeks for the preexisting condition waiver. I didn’t want to buy a plan for the entire amount that far ahead, it would be a lot of money up front. I was happy to find one that allows that!

Hmm, a big omission is not promoting sites like "Insuremytrip"or "squaremouth" that enables you to compare the coverage of a vast number of policies - curious as to why only 2 companies mentioned. From my experience, both are some of the more expensive companies to purchase insurance from. Also, sites like "Insuremytrip" and "square mouth" can help if an issue surfaces with a claim - they can act as an advocate with the insurance claim provider.

I used to work in the Middle East and transiting through Heathrow frequently. You are absolutely correct. You'll need at least 4 hours to get through security, custom and more security before you can get to your departure gate. There, you may still have to go through security before you board at your gate. Their tight security began after Pan Am Flt 103 exploded over Lockerbie Scotland by the shoe bomber, killing all 259 on board.
