I always wondered if the Mountain knew who Elia Martell was while killing her, knowing the character he probably only obeyed orders without wondering who the designated victim was. While Oberyn yells at him he probably thinks “and who the hell would be Elia Martell?” Oberyn's revenge would have made more sense if it had been turned towards a Lannister
