Santorini Review | Climb Your Way to Victory!
One disadvantage of this method: I will spend more time searching for games than playing. 😂 Great content as usual, Ryan!
Haha always the struggle, glad you enjoyed it! -Ryan
Very interesting as a chess player myself, I know that, some people get bored, of Chess. because they lose a lot but, I also know sometimes people get bored, of it because they win a lot. And also learning other board games, can expand your gameplay skill. But it's not to say that you should just stop playing chess, it's just you should only have chess in your life.
Good points, everyone will have a different preference of how much they deeply play a single game versus exploring different games. This video is definitely geared more towards board gamers that are looking for games that have similarities to chess. -Ryan
Did not know you could do this with the database, although I assumed that BGG was running some kind of meta-analysis of composite ratings like this in order to populate their "similar to" field on a game's page. If I can find the time to try this out, I might.
Yeah the "similar" feature is a nice feature for finding games like a specific game, but I have found this can be a lot more powerful as you can build up a list that covers your tastes over a wide variety of games and then see lots of user comments that are from that curated list. One of those things you can always chip away at adding more to, but once you have it set up, it doesn't take any maintenance to keep using it. -Ryan
Great advice and nice to finally have someone publicise the function. I've been on BGG for around 19 years and discovered the Geekbuddy Analysis many years ago. Over the years I've curated an extensive list of Geekbuddies. It is the the most useful function for researching games (old and newer). If my Geekbuddies rate the game 6.6 or more - I'm very likely to also like the game. Under the Geekbuddy Manager, you can also put your Geekbuddies into specific Groups. So you could have a list called "Similar Gamers" or "Friends", etc. And when you do the Geekbuddy Analysis from a game page, you can isolate the rating by using the Group dropdown at the top of the list. Can I suggest to anyone interested? If you like (or dislike) a game - please take a few mins to add a rating on BGG and add a few comments around what you think of the game. Your comments don't have to be extensive, just enough to be useful for other people. The more ratings and comments - the better the data gets for everyone.
I use the geekbuddies feature regularly, but my geekbuddies are all friends or reviewers. It's never occurred to me to find strangers who align with my tastes and I think it's a great idea! I was just poking around BGG a bit and saw that under the stats section in my profile it gives a list of Largest Disparities in Ratings. The games on that list might be a good place to find geekbuddies who align with your less common tastes.
This looks like the best way possible to get personalized recommendations! I'm definitely going to start doing this, thanks for sharing!!
Awesome, hope it works well for you! -Ryan
i’d love to see a review of this game where people throw away the player boards and just use computer apps or whatever for all calculations
But what about all the irrational satisfaction I get from pushing little cubes around!? 😅 There is a really good digital Terraforming Mars port for those that really want to cut out the upkeep haha. -Ryan
@ lol it’s just wild you see so many board game reviewers that don’t do common sense mechanical changes that enhance the overall experience. i know if i were looking to play this game and i sat down and played with the poopy card board or even with special overlays, i would be pissed at all the reviewers that never told me to just use the app
Huge info man. I've been using the BGG website for years and had 0 idea such thing existed. Thanks!
I really enjoy your channel. This video is very informative. Thank you.
Appreciate the feedback, thanks for watching! -Ryan
That is fascinating! I had no idea what the geek buddy feature was for. I am just using it for people I personally know. I've been using BGG regularly for over 10 years now and there are so many capabilities about the site that I've never explored. It's very overwhelming and busy trying to figure things out. It would be nice if the creators of the site would put out videos showing things like this. One of the more difficult things that I've had to research is how to format charts, tables, text and images in the forums.
Very cool feature, I will check it out thanks!
It's definitely a powerful feature that flies under the radar... hope you get some value out of it! -Ryan
Excellent content as per this channel! Thanks! I’m trying this out now!
Thanks for watching and good luck! -Ryan
I had no idea this was a thing. Thanks. I especially like the advice on picking out a game you love that's a little different (from euros) to find GeekBuddies with the same quirks as you. I'd probably add: Flamme Rogue, Love Letter, Hadrian's Wall, Dixit.
It is definitely a non-obvious feature, hope it works well for you too! -Ryan
This is incredibly helpful!! Often there are games on BGG that receive incredible ratings but still don't seem like they're for me. I've done a more manual version of this process in the past, checking to see if a game's positive reviews come from "reliable" (100+ reviews, strong bell curve) sources. Many of my favorite games today are titles that I bounced off of initially, so I try to take it seriously when a game I don't initially click with still has great ratings - but it can sometimes be difficult to tell where those great ratings come from. Sometimes an 8/10 means "tried and true evergreen strategy game," but just as often it means "lots of people are *really* excited about this kickstarter project that hasn't even finished shipping yet" or "lovely art direction and components distract from an otherwise middle-of-the-road gameplay experience." Having a more automated system to analyze "where is this 8/10 coming from" is going to be incredibly helpful in the future. Thank you!!
Awesome, hope it serves you as well as it has served me! -Ryan
Absolutely amazing way to use BGG. I can't wait to try this out! My game friends and I always complain that the top 100 on BGG doesn't really align with any of our game tastes. Your method will really help! Thanks!
So glad to hear it! 🎉 -Ryan
"The Birds" is a movie absolutely every horror lover should watch.
Confession: I actually don't like horror movies at all haha, but it sure makes a great theme for a solo game of survival! -Ryan
Biggest Blowout - GI Joe The Deck Building Game. We played a 3 player game and didn't fail a single mission the entire game. An extremely rare thing if you know the game. Closest Game - Champions of Midgard, all 5 players were within a 10 point range. Worst Play - Risk: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition. A good friend of mine wanted to play this, so reluctantly suffered through this game. Wow, forgot how bad Risk is and slapping on the LotR IP does not help. Best Day - Day before Thanksgiving; Orleans, Istanbul, Snow Tails, Viking See-Saw, and Green Team Wins
Kudos to you for remembering well enough to hit the categories that you didn't know in advance haha! Here's to a great year of gaming in 2025 (with less Risk)! -Ryan
My top play was Quedlinburg Dash with my 4 year old and the family this Christmas. Thank you Ryan for the recommendation!
This is so amazing to hear!! Always love helping people find games they'll enjoy, and it is especially cool to have those kinds of experiences with your kids and family. 🙂 -Ryan
Great video guys! Merry Christmas! I'll keep your categories in mind so I can join you next year with my plays.
Thanks, Merry Christmas! We will also try to keep them in mind throughout the year so this video is easier the next time around. 😂 -Ryan
That was an epic game. 😅
I suppose you could be referring to 6-player Agricola or the close Foundations of Rome finish since you were a part of both! -Ryan
Hilarious categories!
Haha glad you enjoyed them! 😅 -Ryan
Very festive 🎄
This is a great wrap up video! Thanks y'all, merry Christmas and happy new year!
Thanks Gary, happy new year! 🎉 -Ryan
Also my top plays of the year were heat and decrypto. Thank you for the game recommendations
Love both of those games! -Ryan
Best play of the year return to dark tower. Closest game of the year terraforming mars. 2025 is going to be a great gaming year.
Would love the opportunity to try Dark Tower someday... Here's to a great year of gaming in 2025! -Ryan
Top 10 Space Themed Games: #7. Agricola
The game is all about effectively filling your empty space! 😂 -Ryan
Bro looks like the head of the character in Wolfenstein
I can see it! 😂 -Daniel
Cool video, great to hear how you guys got started in the hobby! Not sure if it's been asked before, but why did you decide to start a UA-cam channel?
Good question! Might add it to the list for next year, but I'll give a brief (maybe not-so-brief haha) answer here. There were definitely a few factors that played into us starting the channel. One is the fact that I have watched a lot of board gaming UA-cam channels going all the way back to 2009, so I have a lot of familiarity with the space and how we might approach having our own channel. Another big factor is that we already had experience making UA-cam content. I had been making content for game designers on Ludo Lodge and Daniel had been doing tech/product reviews and tutorials on Daniel Langewisch. And I was piggybacking on my wife having a lot of the equipment from her doing UA-cam for her Fragile Glory Impressions art business. So we felt we had a good understanding of making content and general UA-cam strategy. As I've had kids, it got me thinking about the possibility of a board gaming channel someday (I actually came up with the Rolls in the Family name before Daniel and I even talked about it). But then things kind of aligned with Daniel getting tired of his own channel and having an interest in doing something new, and us realizing that our skills/interests could complement each other well (Daniel does all the video editing and I tend to do planning/strategy/website/etc). We talked and planned for about a month before launching the channel, and ultimately decided it was feasible for us to post a video per week (a lot of work on top of full time jobs and everything else with our families haha, but feasible). And here we are almost 2 years later with almost 100 videos posted! Still enjoying it and excited about the future of the channel. Thanks for watching! 🙂 -Ryan
@@RollsInTheFamilywow thanks for the detailed response! That’s really cool, I guess having a background in content creation/video editing made it an easier decision than completely starting from 0. I enjoy your formats; the back and forth nature and brotherly ribbing makes things casual and fun even if it’s a remote conversation. Thanks for all the content and looking forward to more!
Glad to hear our brotherly poking fun and banter is more a pro than an annoyance. 😂 -Ryan
Upvote and like for Feast for Odin leaving the collection
Ouch. Nemesis Retaliation is not a replacement for Nemesis. It’s quite a different game mechanically and thematically set in the same setting.
Agreed. In Retaliation you go in heavily armed and ready to fight aliens. While in Nemesis you are starting in a disadvantage. Just that makes a huge difference. Mowing down aliens vs sneaking around trying to survive.
Yeah I think we are aware of those differences, though I probably would have held onto Nemesis until Retaliation came if I was Daniel. 😂 Whether it is a "replacement" or not will likely depend on personal preference and your tolerance for keeping multiple, similar versions within the same game series, but I guess time will tell! Maybe we will be back here six months from now confessing our mistake haha. -Ryan
I do have cat in the box and find it hard to get to the table. Does not have as much variation as I would like. Great video
It really is a clever game though! -Ryan
Lol super easy family game too even my youngest enjoys picking the shortest train routes then spends the rest of the game blocking everyone else
Haha there's always that one family member. -Ryan
I got the crew from you lol, my group enjoys both, but I see how the objectives would get repetitive. I think I enjoy endless winter solo or with a group that has played it several times. Oh Feast for Odin, ouch that one hurts me. That one is top 10 for me. I also backed way too much of the new Nemesis, but im going to wait to pick which Nemesis stays. Nemesis isnt for everyone. But definitely me lol
You have better self-control than me regarding Nemesis 😂 I cant wait for it to arrive! -Daniel
Every summer in my area, there is a board game flee market where hundreds of people come together, setup canopies and buy and sell their games. The games I got rid of at this event: 1. Cubitos 2. Incan Gold 3. The Reckoners 4. Dinosaur Island 5. Dinosaur World 6. Camel Up I know what you mean about Suburbia. I got rid of Sentinels of the Multiverse Big Box because of that reason. The bloat and setup became more of a burden. I enjoyed it more when it was the base game a a few expansions and it all fit in the base game box.
That event sounds like a great way to quickly flip some outgoing games into some new additions. Cubitos left me feeling like I'd always prefer playing Quacks, and we culled Incan Gold a decade ago, mainly because we had played it a lot and lost the excitement for it. Haven't played 3-5, but Camel Up is the one that still holds on in my collection... doesn't see frequent play but we've still had a good time with it with bigger groups. -Ryan
ABC Always Be Culling
😎🗑️ -Ryan
Shakespeare and LotR LCG recently left my collection
Is there another LCG that won a spot over LotR, or did it just not land well for you? -Ryan
@RollsInTheFamily It sat unplayed and with zero ambition/interest to play any more. Also, I'm in need of some shelf space with the coming of Arydia. LotR was a fairly easy choice for culling. Shakespeare was more difficult for me. I enjoyed the gameplay quite a bit, however, the theme didn't ever interest anyone I know to choose it on game night.
Just got rid of 7 Wonders Duel because I received Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle Earth as a gift.
You will have to let me know what you think! I currently own 7 Wonders Duel and am curious if Lord of the Rings: Duel is worth replacing it with 🤔 -Daniel
@RollsInTheFamily I really dig it. It is similar enough to feel comfortably familiar, but changes it enough to warrant buying it. And, if you like the theme, I think it's a no brainer.
@@lostfanatic6Daniel knows an embarrassingly small amount about LotR. 😂 -Ryan
Culling the collection is a must in this hobby imo. I just sold great western trail Argentina yesterday.
Agreed! GWT not land well for you, or do you have another edition? -Ryan
@ I just have too many games in my collection and only want to play the games i absolutely love these days.
That's the way to do it! -Ryan
Under a minute crew
I expect nothing less from you! 😜 -Daniel
Cascadia plays up to 6 with the expansion
Indeed! I have the expansion now but haven't had the chance to try with that many players yet. -Ryan
Thanks for answering my Agricola/Caverna relates Qs! Very helpful insights :) I really enjoy listening to you both talking about boardgames. You have a great sense of humour and chemistry between yourselves, as well as a wealth of BG experience and knowledge which is interesting to learn about. I would be interested to see your respective BG collections in closer detail yes. Happy holidays, All the best David
Appreciate the kind words! We plan to do some "collection tour" videos this next year, ideally filming them when we are together in person. Happy gaming! 🎄🎆 -Ryan
Thanks for the wonderful coverage of Quest Kids!
My son and I have had a lot of fun with it! 🙂 -Ryan
The single greatest boardgame I ever played in my life! I am proud to have known games made by GMT Games.
It really is a fantastic experience! -Ryan
Millennium Blades sound really cool, I wonder if I could find it
It's truly one of a kind, looks like Level 99 will have copies in stock soon! www.level99store.com/products/millennium-blades -Ryan
@RollsInTheFamily unfortunately I'm in UK and the prices seem to be extremely elevated, seeing them at around £150 so around 190$ 😬
Yikes! 😵 -Ryan
I highly recommend Bottom of the 9th for a fun 2p baseball themed game. Also, great episode!
Thanks for the recommendation! -Ryan
Ezra and Nehemiah is an amazing game by Garphill Games.
I've heard good things about it! -Ryan
Feel your pain about the plays guys. Work and kids definitely play into simpler/faster games. I try for one game a week that I really like, and the rest are all family and kids game plays. The sports games I like are "Eleven" by Portal games is fairly good. Blitz Bowl by games workshop. And baseball highlights. Bounced hard off football highlights though. Good luck on the football game design. Don't give up! The best snack for me is peanut M&Ms.
Thanks! Eleven intrigues me, though I heard kind of mixed responses to it. Looking forward to seasons of life that may have more time for gaming and game design! -Ryan
@RollsInTheFamily If you can get past the atrocious rule books (yes books) for Eleven, there is a good game in there. Hehe
Hmm, I think pretzels or pocky are my favorite gaming snack
I don't think I have enough self control with pocky. 😂 -Ryan
@@RollsInTheFamily I have not tried animal crackers but that sounds great
Pretzels and gummy bears are my snack for board games
I've never been big on gummy bears or jelly beans but I know lots of people love them haha. -Ryan
