Ghost motogymkhana. Why ghosts ride faster?
To clarify why some training runs are faster/slower, I compiled an overlay video from the same session (~12-15 tries) with the fastest run ("ghost") and random slower run ("rider"). It seems that it is basically one turn that decides "the winner"- lean more, turn a little bit earlier, and you can easily get minus 0.2-0.5s on these short runs! You can try to guess which turn it is, I make a rewind on each run and point at the exact moment where the "ghost" takes the lead :).

It was two runs in a row at exactly the same time, up to the 10th of milliseconds. I thought my DIY timer was malfunctioning, but when reviewing the video, I saw it worked totally OK. Now that's called "consistency" :) !!!

Last round of OLC competition, I was able to improve a little bit over my previous run! The course is quite challenging for my skill level, and the spot I'm riding is tight- some elements were a bit too close to the curb for my "comfort" level :P... How does the timing device work? Motion sensor?

    • @KestasLi
      @KestasLi 2 місяці тому

      No, it is not a motion sensor, it uses an infrared beam and reflector. You cross the beam the first time- count starts, cross the second time- count stops. I use an industrial type "obstacle detection" sensor often used for gates/barriers (similar to this amzn.eu/d/bfqF2zx ), electronics part & display is last winter project. You should do something motogymkhana related if you can't ride :)...

      @KestasLi 2 місяці тому

      Hi, not sure about your question, but I don't have something like "proper" stunt subcage mounted. I use axle pegs on the rear, these protect exhaust, brake caliper, and brake/shifter levers. It is similar to these in the link (not the exact model but the idea is the same) t.ly/p-Frr . Some time ago I also used similar pegs for the front axle, but after 2+ seasons of riding these were basically without the scratch, so I replaced them with small plastic ones.

    hello do you use a manual radietor fan switch to keep the engine temperature down? thank you

    • @KestasLi
      @KestasLi 2 місяці тому

      No, I don't have a switch to turn on the fan manually. I usually ride in 15-20min sessions with ~5-10min breaks, so it is enough time to cool down the engine. I only had one case when I was hooked on improving time on some figure, the day was very hot, I rode for almost half an hour without stopping and the coolant started to bubble. For other occasions, it worked well on auto mode :).

      Thanks! Maybe this method (facing away) works better for bigger bikes? I tried a few times to lift it facing backward, but the motorcycle lies on the ground quite low, I must almost sit on the tarmac to be able to grab it. As Striple 675 is not very heavy, most often, I simply get as close as possible to the bike, press against the seat with my thighs, and walk it up (similar to video 1:54). But yeah, surprisingly I'm not getting younger, probably I need to practice other methods as well :).

    Hi, do you have any modifications that could improve the steering angle? Do you have any modifications that allow manually adjusting the idle RPM? What do you think about STR 675 for Gymkhana?

    • @KestasLi
      @KestasLi 2 місяці тому

      Hi, currently, steering angle limiters are in stock configuration with no changes. I still can't consistently do full lock turns with stock config, so I doubt modifying the steering angle will improve my riding very much 😋... I have installed an idle adjuster cable, usually I set idle to ~2500 RPM for motogymkhana training/competitions. Regarding SRT 675 for motogymkhana I don't know, I'm not very technically savvy in that regard. Usually you will not find STR 675 in the list of "recommended bikes for motogymkhana", but there are quite some folks riding this machine very well! Anyway, the most important element of whole system is the Rider, so the bike should be OK. I also remember one of the best motogymkhana riders Haruhiko Tsujiie was saying "you should train on the bike you like," so if your hearth sings looking at the STriple- go with that :).

    What's that lanyard you have on your hand?

    • @KestasLi
      @KestasLi 3 місяці тому

      This is a "kill switch", it stops the engine if you fall from a motorcycle. It is a highly recommended upgrade if you use an idle adjuster. If idle revs are high enough, the motorcycle can run perfectly well without the rider in the saddle (check UA-cam) aiming at the BMW X6 in the corner of the parking lot 😝... I use a version with "coil type" lanyard so it allows some movement freedom (e.g. letting go of the handlebars). Usually, "kill switch" is mandatory if you participate in the official motogymkhana competitions and use an idle adjuster.

    Тут что-то неправильно с распределением веса у него происходит, перед перегружает и в момент срыва закрывает газ. Нужно поработать с контролем тела на мотике и работой газом. Ровный газ и открытие после апекса, работа задним тормозом для корректировки ускорения. Перед перенапрягает и в момент начала срыва еще догружает его, работа газом исправит положение, а контроль положения тела даст баланс в момент начала падения, которого можно было избежать во всех этих случаях.

      Yes, I have an idle adjuster installed, it is usually set to the ~2500-2800 RPM depending on the training type. For no hands rotations I do these steps: take my hands off the handlebar in a straight line, lean the bike using your ass, and press on the rear brake. When the bike enters the turn, gradually release the rear brake and use it for fine-tuning the balance. I also noticed it is much easier to control your bike with the upper part of your buttocks, so you should lean back quite a bit. Works for me :).

I´m practicing some of these drills, and I find that I´m getting more and more comfortable with leaning at low speeds (turns at around 10-12kph) but I´m using the clutch almost all the time... I feel that without the clutch the engine is a bit jumpy and harder to modulate, to slipping the clutch feels more natural and easier to feed power. But you made it look easy without slipping the clutch, I´ll give it a go in my next sessions. Thanks again!

    • @KestasLi

      Thanks for the comment! I mostly train "motogymkhana" style riding, which rarely uses a clutch (mostly on 1 or 2 cyl bikes), so my clutch control skills are non-existent :). All the balance stuff is done by body/rear brake/throttle. Yes, you need to change rear brake pads more often than regular riding, but it gives you very precise and smooth control. Are there any special mods people do for Motogymkhana? You use supersport tires and at which tire pressure? That looks super fun, i think i need to start doing it too 😅

    • @KestasLi
      @KestasLi Рік тому

      Hey, regarding mods- sure you can go totally crazy, but usually it is better to start from very basic things and then build your bike as your skills improve. I think very minimum for motogymkhana would be to have good bike (and rider) protection. It is not unusual to have few drops & slides during ~1h session, so protecting your bike will allow you to continue training without additional expenses :). I would recommend to check Richard van Schouwenburg (he is one of the best MG riders in EU) comments regarding bike mods, he layed out these in very structured way (link at the end). Also please check my channels community section, I placed few links there for bike protection options. And yes, be careful, motogymkhana is extremely addictive sport, I warned you :)! Currently I ride Bridgestone S22, front is usually ~2.2-2.3bar, rear ~2.0-2.1bar for motogymkhana. For street ride I usually rise pressure to 2.6bar rear and 2.3-2.4bar front. Still playing with pressure settings, not sure if I will have same numbers next season :)

      @KestasLi Рік тому

      I'm not very much interested in the lean angle number, but more to have feedback and push myself to lean more. Also, this type of apps can be ± accurate because they use combination of gyro/accelerometer to measure angle and recalibrate position.

      @KestasLi Рік тому

      @@ThePlacehole What else is needed :)? Gyro + accelerometer is used to stabilise rotor drones in motion and stationary, this probably involves measuring angles relatively accurate. Gyro have tendency to drift over time, but this can be corrected by accelerometer (if I remember correctly from my Arduino projects). But anyway, this is not right place to discuss gyros, this app pushes me to lean more, that's whole purpose of the exercise :).
