A lot of people in the comments here are understandably confused. The word “Dutch” in English used to mean “any Germanic language”. That’s the intended meaning in the term Pennsylvania Dutch; it’s not implying that it’s from the Netherlands (which it isn’t).
This is not quite right This is greatly exaggerated Why do you do this?
As a german speaker; some dutch words often sound almost the same as in german, just with a lazy pronunciation or very drunk. What they said in this video i couldnt understand at all. Just some words
Who willingly wants to go to Florida?
Is this rum sprigga or whatever it's called? I thought they were allowed to do their own thing, that it's accepted, that that's really the whole point! So why are they mad?
Maybe she's visiting Sarasota? There's a big Amish community there. Doesn't sound like it to hear her Christ-like parents, geez...
They sound a lot like my family and i grew up in south America lol😂😂
als dit dutch(nederlands is) ben ik de paus
Sie will mit ihren Eltern schwätzen. ❤
Since the amish comes from the old country, and so many dutch speakers are saying it sounds more german, my question is what did the people of "Prussia" speak, before it became germany? Could it be some old dead varient only really still spoken by the amish?
The English derived "Dutch" from Duitsch respectively Dietsch that meant the language constituted by the continental West Germanic dialects. It also meant the speakers of these "Dutch" dialects. Only since the wars between England and the Netherlands the English began to reserve "Dutch" for the Netherlanders respectively Netherlandish German (Ne(d)erlands Duits) or Low German (Nederduits) as the Netherlanders ("Dutch") themselves called their language. The Americans were more conservative and "Dutch" was used for German and Dutch (inclusive Flemish) alike for much longer. I suppose that "Deutsch" (German) is pronounced "Deitsch" in Pennsylvania Dutch as usually in West Central German. The speakers of Pennsylvania Dutch themselves had thus no reason at all to replace Dutch by German as the English did for replacing Dutch. Prussia doesn't matter at all regarding the Amish because these came from Switzerland and other Alemannic German speaking regions. They emigrated to the Palatinate (at the Rhine) and mostly adopted the local Rhine Franconian (Palatine German) instead of their original Alemannic German. Many of the alleged Palatines who came to America actually were migrants from Switzerland (not just Amish) to the Palatinate and were also called Palatines because they had adopted the local dialect there. Migration to the Palatinate and many other regions running from Southwest to Northeast Germany was caused by the devastation and population loss by the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) there.
Im Dutch, this sounds More German
Dutch meant originally Germans, Dutch, Flemish, Austrians etc. because they all called themselves Diutsch or Dietsch respectively Duits, Deitsch or Deutsch where long vowels became diphthongs. Thus nowadays it's still Duetsch (Dytsch) in Alemannic German (like Swiss German) and Low German which both didn't experience diphthongization. The Americans were more conservative than the English and used Dutch in its original meaning for longer. The English reserved "Dutch" soley to the Netherlands since the 18th c.. For replacing Dutch in case of "German" (in German it's still Deutsch till this day) they resorted to the medieval and early modern Latin name of the Diutsch or Dietsch (Germans), "Germani" (natio Germanorum, German nation) and called them consequently Germans from then on. Interestingly in Germany and Austria "Germanen" (old Germans, from Latin "Germani") is used for the pagan Germanic tribes. But the Germanic tribes which adopted Christianity are nowadays still called "Germanen" and not "Deutsche". Only the Germanic population of the East Francish Kingdom (precursor of the Holy Roman Empire respectively Germany) since the Saxon kings are called "Deutsche" by us because from then on all the Germanic tribes there adopted Theotisk/Diutisk ("from the people", meant West Germanic) until the 13th c. at the latest for distinguishing themselves from the Romance speakers in the west and south (Welsche or Waalse) and from the Slavic speakers in the east (Wenden).
Sadly, the success rate of Amish children who decide against joining the church in favor of entering the modern world is pretty low. It's really fun and exciting for a year or two, then they start hating it and want to return to the church. Some communities may permit them to return, but in others they are permanently shunned.
as someone who speaks English, German and Dutch, I can follow the entire conversation without subtitles, it is just really like a mixture between German and English
Not dutch but Deutch. Groetjes uit Nederland.
It’s called Pennsylvania Dutch but it’s more reaaallllyyy old German dialect. It’s called Pennsylvania Dutch because when they first arrived, people unknowingly thought it was Dutch they were speaking
I understand what they're talking That's just like hutterites talk so cool. That could be called American German lol. Or American Deutch Deutch got shortened too Dutch. Lol.
Het is gewoon Duits, net als “Ben ik van Duitsen bloed”
Never understood why they emphasized it as a "Dutch" derived language when it's more German based? I think Pennsylvanian German would be a more accurate name for it.
This Deutsch not Dutch
💙
Sounds great. American English is usually like a few phrases followed by silence. Here they are actually talking. USA got unlucky with a poor small talk language.
Yeah this is a form.of oldskool German. Nothing dutch about it
Sounds like plattdeutsch to me. Understandable.
The Fancy Dutch has the language beaten out of them at school during WW1 (or was it WW2?) Anyway, the Amish and Mennonites are now the only ones keeping this language alive.
As a German i don‘t understand any word 😅
Not one word Dutch in this...somekinda mix of Polish, Swedish, German with a little English sound... but not even close to Dutch
As a woman who grew up and lives in the "regular world" her parents are pretty much right. It is hellish out here! Found a small town to settle down in and raise our kids in. It's the only place I've found peace and happiness. The city is hell!
Sounds more like swedish lmao Im dutch, and not even german sounds like this.
Deutsch
Burgundy ( Bourgogne) was a duchy not a kingdom.Marie was Duchess of Burgundy not a Queen.Maximilian thus became Duke of Burgundy, not king.
Thats no dutch. For shure
So much for the myth that white immigrants always came here to assimilate.
😮😮🎉
I find it hilarious that all the Dutch posters continue to point out that this is German ( rooted) and not Dutch. As a North American growing up with a Dutch mother, Americans/Canadians are quite clueless and think you mean or are saying " Deutsch" when you say " Dutch". This is likely where the confusion came from historically and clearly why the English speakers called it " Pennsylvania Dutch". Easier to pronounce. They also didn't really care how different it might be. It's clearly German sounding but the name has just passed down generation after generation.
To all the confused Dutch in the comments-“Dutch” is from the word “Deutsch,” meaning German. Not actual Netherlands Dutch. :)
Sounds like suebian with english
Hard to hear the dialogue.
its Deutsch not Dutch. The Amish are of German origin.
German (Franconian) is my first language and I had a hard time understanding what they were saying.
If it wasn’t for an Englishman named William Penn, these people would never be here in the first place!!
So Pennsylvania German...
Jesus wouldn't say what her parents are saying!
Whitewashing!
As a German who understands every German dialect and even some Plattdeutsch (fluent in Norwegian and English) this is so far from German that I could hardly understand a word.
run as fast as you can young lady...
