I'm not sure I like these photos or not. they are not private anymore. all relatives must be long gone. so they end up be bought at antique places. so no one knows who they are. very sad.

Times were so much harder back then-so many babies and young people -so sad -there was so much less medical knowledge and prevent back then -my poor grandmother lost 2 children one baby girl from an ear infection because it was before penicillin was discovered and a 13 year old boy who had a twisted intestine who died because it took too long to discover what was wrong-incredibly heartbreaking

I see many young girls dying of a suspicious circumstance! 😥

I recognize several pics of goitres, ectrodactyly, scoliosis, parasitic twin, Grave's disease.... possibly leprosy? birthmarks? Interesting for sure!

This is the saddest and most distressing video I have ever seen. The suffering these poor people and children had to endure is heartbreaking.

The Mutter Museum in Philadelphia is the source of some of these images. The poor man pictured at the 5:00 minute point eventually died and his colon is on display at the Mutter; the colon is so large it's hard to understand how this man survived as long as he did. The founder of the museum, a doctor, felt it important to collect these medical examples as a way of advancing medicine. You can see a fair bit of their exhibit on line. What is so compelling to me is the resiliency of people. Even when life was ebbing away, in many pictures they combed their hair or put on a jacket, or smiled. They likely knew their life was going to end as a result their injury, disease or illness, and they were willing to share themselves with a photographer. The human spirit is beautiful, but especially as it moves closer to returning from it's source; the shedding of the body gives way to the beauty within the person.

OMG, the resignation in so many of their eyes. I can't imagine what it took for them to consent to be immortalized in black and white back then, when they must have suffered so much. Not just the stares and taunts from others, but the misery of their conditions.

Poor souls, at least nowadays they would have got help. That would hopefully cure them,RIP to all of them.

Doctor Gilles' patients may look horrific, but they were actually very lucky to be receiving such advanced treatment. Many were able to go on and live relatively normal lives after sustaining devastating injuries in the Great War.

Dr pimple popper, could have helped some of these poor soul's.

So sad, these people must have died of illnesses that could have been easily treated today.
