FPV Porch Pilots Club | RUNCAM Thumb 2 | FULL AUTO | Cinewhoop
Manual settings don't work very well for the type or areas I fly. The dark areas suffer. In Full AUTO (ISO and SHUTTER), and SUNNY White Balance, it's acceptable as in this flight. Saturation and Contrast are set at 3. Exposure at 0.
I think the THUMB 2 I got has problems. Sometimes is doesn't power up by either port. Sometimes it powers up but wont record when I hit the record button. Sometimes it powers up and records but doesn't record the gyro data. FRUSTRATING !!!

In this test run I tried the MEDIUM video quality setting at 4K/60fps as it captures at 80 mbps allowing about a 6 minute run time before a 2nd MP4 file is spawned at the 4GB point. If you use gyroflow, the associated gyro data file is only generated for the first MP4 file in a series currently. As you can tell, the dark areas are crushed and look muddy with the settings I used for this flight....

Just testing out this new camera filmed in 4K 60fps, manual shutter, and sunny conditions. Exported at 30fps. Gyroflow stabilized. Obviously manual mode wrecks darker areas so I usually stick to auto shutter with a fixed ISO. Note, if you set the Thumb 2 to HIGH video quality the data rate will be over 100 mbps, and at about 4 minutes in you will hit the 4GB file cap. This causes a 2nd file to ...

I like the Thumb Pro line but I've been struggling to get satisfactory footage out of them each time, especially since I fly in a variety of sun conditions. Nothing is worse than having a rockin' rip only to have trash footage result. I've run a bunch of tests recently to tweak settings and to eliminate the nasty sun glare and sun flares as you'll see in the first clip. I then designed a custom...

The flying and music go so well together 👌 love this man🤙
Thanks ... I try!
Very nice, greatly appreciate this straight to the point tip. Thank you!
That is LOVELY video, Tommy. I use the auto settings primarily on the 03AU also. Those eccentricities with your particular Thumb unit would aggravate the hell out of me. I would lobby for a replacement unit. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Happy flying amigo. 🫡 🍻
Thanks. The footage is improved in AUTO but I need to improve the sun flaring problem. I did design a visor for it but it doesn't help much for evening sun angles. It's always something!! Thanks again Ox!
@@TommyTester It IS always something 😆. I guess that's what keeps us coming back...🤔
So which spreader do you recommend then? I have Scott’s drop spreader and was thinking of getting one of these Scott’s spreaders, why was the earthway spreader not tested?
The majority of the noise comes from the guard built into the housing. It's flat plastic so causes a lot of turbulence. I cut the 4 points around the guard to leave a clear hole for the fan and the noise is considerably lower (maybe filing the edges of the guards into curves could help too). You should really replace the guard with a proper metal one but I just left mine - it blows not sucks so nothing would likely catch in there unless I was very careless. That said, the 0/max setup of this fan is dumb and let's down a good unit. The lower speed on your one is more than enough for most uses. A fan that ramps up with the temperature using a thermistor would be ideal and is something I've considered but haven't bothered. Side note, check your cable for a good earth wire. My bundled cable was really cheap and nasty so I replaced it (I have the white T150, not sure if that's newer or older than the black one, I've had it years though)
I just paid $15 per 50lb bag for quikrete cold patch
Yeah, prices are sure going up. The stuff I used is now $11.50 for 50#. Good luck with your project.
@@TommyTester Thanks! Your video was very helpful
Any colour grading
Yes.
Awesome flight 👊😎
Thanks for sharing these tests, Tommy. I'm always interested in the gear and methods other pilots employ when capturing video. In my experience with the 03 Air Unit, I'm happy with 1080p, 60FPS, GyroFlow instead of RockSteady EIS, and Color grading in DaVinci Resolve. I haven't experimented with ND filters. I have decided 1080p is good enough for most situations, and I don't have to deal with the hassles associated with 4K. I do still enjoy experimenting with 4K, but for day to day flying, it's a PITA. IMHO. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Happy flying amigo. 🫡 🍻
Yeah, that 03 is pretty solid. The Go2 is still the best alternative. I was hoping the Thumb2 would be as good but it's falling short and weights about the same. Still, it's fun to play with and perhaps others will share things about it in return. Thanks again Ox!
Дорогой друг привет! Поделитесь файлом 3D для RunCam Thumb 2 пожалуйста!
Awesome place to fly 👊😎 thanks for sharing your flights😊🙏 have a great week 👍
Yeah ... thanks man. I appreciate the comment !
Enjoy your content and the music as well.🫡
I think your educated experimentation is paying dividends. This video looks terrific! Even on my phone screen. I plan to watch it on my laptop or television also. Great job, Porch Pilot. 🫡 🍻
Thanks. Sunny conditions are a lot more fun for sure. The are so many variables you can play with on these Thumbs it can get confusing. Same goes for color grading and encoding. It's easy to become obsessed. Thanks for watching Ox. Keep moving forward!
Awesome flying and orbiting around the tree. 👍🙏👍🙏
Thanks Ray. FPV is never boring! I hope all is well.
are there any internal mic on thumb 2
Yes. I just lower the volume from the camera mic in post to favor the music track. Thank you.
Terrific flying and filming, Tommy. Man, that precision, proximity stuff REALLY shows your skills! Yeah, that Thumb2 give a lovely image. Thanks for sharing your adventures amigo.
Thanks. It may not show much better that the Thumb Pros on a phone, but on a larger screen it's very noticeable. I've had reliability problems with the Thumb Pros, mainly they quit recording in mid- flight for seemingly no reason. Fingers crossed that this one won't do the same thing. It has given me a opportunity to make some new mounts though, which is kinda fun. The one that comes with the Thumb 2 is pretty minimal. Cheers ...
I watched it on my new 16" laptop screen and it looked REALLY great. I was checking out your camera mount too. Great job amigo! 🤠👍
@@Sonic_Ox Thanks. I came up with this soft-mount idea a few years ago as the original GO and THUMB cameras had nasty jello problems. I've sold a lot of them on ebay. The design also allows the angle to be easily adjusted, plus the camera is less likely to be smashed to hell in a hard crash. As for image quality, I'm going to have to run a bunch of tests with various camera settings to more closely match what I get with GO2 class cameras.
Your design seems like a simple and elegant solution to the jello problem. I love it when things work out like that. Great job. Happy flying amigo. 🫡 🍻
Tommy, if you are still reading this: I guess I won't name products but I am trying to discover if I can use a hose end sprayer with a liquid product concentrate whose directions are to mix said concentrate 1/5 - 1 part product to 5 parts water with a backpack sprayer. Product doesn't specify sq ft it will cover. Well, anywhere from 700-2000 using a backpack sprayer depending on how heavy you lay it on. I would prefer the hose end sprayer for my project to a backpack sprayer. BTW, using your method I now know my settings for 1000 sq. ft. Thanks.
Great post Thank you for sharing and all the hard work you put into...

One important recommendation for quality is to only do half of the layer that you need when it's over a couple of inches. Put down one layer tamp and let it cure for a day. Then do the final layer. It will be more solid. The tamper can't compress like a roller can.
I agree with that! Good input! Thanks.
Smooth. 👍
Thank you bro!
That was a beautiful rendition of that song, very relaxing 👍🔥 Those thumb settings looked really good to me, great job Tommy🤝
Great work 👏 👍 👌
Thanks bud.
How do you prevent the loss of the control link when you go behind the buildings?
The control signal does get reduced with any obstruction, be it structures or trees, as well as distance. There are also a variety of control systems you can pick from, with the more expensive ones offering longer range and better "penetration." That said, there is a point where control will be lost, so the level of signal strength is sent back to the pilot into their goggles and transmitter in real time so he knows how strong the control signal is being received by the quad, and usually a warning sound from the transmitter will alert him before control is lost. Good question.
@@TommyTester Thank You!
How did you bypass to test?
The thermostat is just a switch. Bypass by jumpering a wire between the 2 wires attached to the thermostat. The compressor will run if there are no other issues.
@@TommyTester Thank you SO MUCH! I have two of these, and they both had stopped working. The current price for an OEM replacement is north of $300! I jumped them both, and they both fired up. I bought the same switch you did, and received them today. The only difference I noticed was that the original switch included a ground, while the replacement does not have any connection for a ground. What did you do about that?
@@mikereno3667 Not a big deal. It's not needed to function.
@@TommyTester Got the first one up and running. Thanks! It had been sitting for a few years. The compressor fired right and I let it run for 30-60 minutes. No cooling. I felt the tank in the back and it was really hot, so I suspect it needs refilling. So now I'm off to figure out how to do that! Thanks again... helpful page.
Now why didn't this chart come with the spray head?! Thanks! 😄👍
TommyTester, you're a legend, thank you for this vid very much appreciated
I just took one of these apart to try and fix the rotating gear assembly- and that portion of the sprinkler appears to be sealed shut. The output drive gear won't even turn- so when it stops rotating and you've confirmed nothing is blocking the filter, there is very little you can do to correct it. These will only last 1-2 years, even with very little use.
A simple, elegant solution. Good show, Tommy! My 3D printing hobby pairs wonderfully with my drone hobby. I bet I use my 3D printer in connection with my drones weekly. Just today I designed and printed an antenna mount and Air Unit mount for the OX-7. I was using zip ties which failed in my last mishap. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Happy flying amigo. 🫡 🍻
Agree! I bought a Prusa mini to make FPV camera mounts, and now I also use it to make many other things.
🤠👍
Looks great with the visor sir! Success 👊😎 You don't like nd filters? I use one on my GP 95% of the time. But I lock the shutter, iso, white balance.. I reckon its all about the look you're going for. And your footage is always top shelf Tommy!!
Thanks. I might retry some NDs, but in the past they made the footage less clear imo. I did order a Thumb 2 with filters that was just announced, so we'll see how that one looks in about a month as it's on preorder. I'll likely need to print a visor for it too. Stay tuned buddy.
Thanks for the ride Tommy. Great flying and filming amigo. 🫡 🍻

This is one of the most satisfying youtube videos I've ever seen LOL.
Help! I am so confused. Bought a liquid concentrate today to kill my chickweed. Added 1.5 tsp concentrate to 32 oz water and filled the container. Didn't know what I was doing. Put setting at 1.5 tsp and sprayed for 15 min and the reservoir was still full. Watched your video. Put setting at 6 oz and sprayed for 10 min. And the reservoir had more liquid in it than when I started. What the heck?
Hey. What settings of gyroflow are you used with insta360 go3? It didn't find data of gyroscope from my camera
Terrific precise flying Tommy! That hop behind the solar panels was exhilarating 😮. Thanks for showing the quad at take-off and landing. It's cool to see the gear. Happy flying amigo. 🫡 🍻
Thanks Ox. Now that you're in the porch pilots gap club, you'll be seeing them everywhere and trying ones you shouldn't. 😀

Another Good one Tommy. 👍
Hey, thanks. Thanks for watching Elmo!
How many days does it take to completely harden?
If it stays hot, weeks. Compaction is the only thing that speeds it up.
