      That's correct! It's a three-axis mill.

    This is the most non-user friendly CNC machine I have ever seen. The biggest flaw is that the user can't see the milled surface without looking from above the machine towards the front of the unit. Most of the shots in the video are shown from the viewpoint inside the machine. I guess you could mount a camera inside the machine and watch it cut material on a monitor. Nobody else uses a horizontal spindle because you can't see what is going on.

    • @CoastRunnerCNC
      @CoastRunnerCNC Місяць тому

      The horizontal orientation was chosen due to the improved rigidity it affords. It is a little more difficult to see the work surface during operation than with a vertical mill, but you absolutely are able to look down from above and see it - plus, we have a mirrored chip shield on the spindle that also makes it easy to see how the cut is going.

    Is this newbie friendly, I want to do DIY projects but I have never used CNC before

    • @CoastRunnerCNC
      @CoastRunnerCNC Місяць тому

      It's absolutely newbie friendly! Upon launch we will be releasing a comprehensive education platform that will teach you how to run the mill and how to write custom code for it. I believe it is the most newbie-friendly desktop CNC available.

    • @amazing763
      @amazing763 Місяць тому

      All milling machines are newbie friendly. You learn as you go, and have nothing to lose but your fingers. Seriously, watch out for little kids, long hair, floppy clothes. and fingers, fingers, oops there goes another one, fingers. Rotating machinery is inherently unsafe, but so are other, simpler tools. Remember that day you got yourself while trying to cut a piece of wood with a knife or a chisel. Or the lesson you learned when first trying to ride a horse. The designers will include a substantial amount of cautionary material. You will be well advised to READ and UNDERSTAND everything before you even think about turning it on. You already own the most important safety device, located between your ears.

    Honestly $3k isn't bad. Especially with that software package. I hope you guys do great! I was a machinist for 10 years and it's incredibly useful, but can be very difficult without tons of training and hands on experience.

    How do you mill aluminium without lubricant?

    • @CoastRunnerCNC
      @CoastRunnerCNC Місяць тому

      Gently and slowly :) Actually the mill cuts aluminum dry really well, it produces great chips at a good rate. Steel and titanium, of course, require gentler toolpaths, but those can also be run dry.

    How do i create a crproj file? Like from onshape or fusion 360?

    • @CoastRunnerCNC
      @CoastRunnerCNC 3 місяці тому

      We'll have a video detailing this someday! For now, a short description: a crproj file is simply a zip file that's been renamed from ".zip" to ".crproj". Inside the zip file is a well-defined folder structure containing images, g-code files, and a "manifest" file that defines each step in the set of steps, including title, description, which image (if any) to display and which g-code file (if any) to run on that step. Right now we create our crproj files manually, but at some point we'll have a software builder to help with this.

    Hey! You recorded the location with the edgefinder in contact with the edge of the part/stop. On the larger machines that I run, I would need to either do the math and add/subtract the radius of the edgefinder to call my position at the center of the spindle, or physically move my edgefinder in Z and manually move the distance equal to half of my edgefinder and then press "Record" to set that location. Does your system have half of the edgefinder figured in already? Are you intentionally staying some distance off of the stop? Maybe your stuff is just different than mine, so I don't want to sound like I'm telling you that you're wrong..but...maybe I missed something. Let me know! Thanks!

    • @CoastRunnerCNC
      @CoastRunnerCNC 3 місяці тому

      You guessed correctly! The software in this example knows to compensate for the edgefinder radius. More specifically, the cutcode that I am running here has previously told us which edgefinder to use, and so subsequent steps can safely assume that we are using an edgefinder with a particular radius. At 7:17, when I click "next" and it tells us that it's going to run some gcode behind the scenes, the gcode the software is running to record the zero is written to compensate for that known radius.

      More dangerous then using a manual mill without an enclosure, and spraying coolant on the part being cut?
