This is a short video that shows the basic simplicity of our Datsun 620 4x4. The reason I made this video is because most, if not all videos showing 620's, they have been modified in some manner. The first to go is the basic bench seat that is generally replaced by "racing bucket seats". Next is the steering wheel, replaced by a "Momo-Style" (or some other sort) of "racing" steering wheel. And generally, the basic cab just does not exist, except in some ground-up restorations of trucks that are kept for show and not really used as a work truck, like we do.
It's good to feel the basic controls of a 70's Datsun. Everything feels so mechanical and sturdy. The controls are basic but tactile. When you use the vent levers you can actually see what you're operating, baffles are opening, things are happening. In a new car you're shielded from all that. And in newer and especially electric cars, you just have capacitive touch screens, hand gestures, and voice activation that just detaches you from the driving experience. Not in this truck. Here you have to work to get things done. you have to muscle your way around (with both hands) to turn the steering wheel. Work your biceps to roll the windows up or down. Everything is work, but satisfying.
I have nothing against progress; in fact, I welcome it. But it's always good to not forget the raw feeling of piloting an old-school vehicle with the noise, the vibration, the harshness, the discomfort... And the feeling that after you drive it you've burned enough calories that you've earned yourself a cold beer!
