    what is the cost like in terms of tanks to prints? I just saw an ad for the megatanks. also I know its relatively new but does the ink get gunk up when not in use for a prolonged amount of time of there is a mechanism that lets you clean the insides? I think my concern with printers in general is that its best to finish up the ink packs inside of leaving them later for future prints. how do these type of printers compare?

    • @the.midlifers
      @the.midlifers Місяць тому

      For this printer, i think a full set of inks costs around $140, but it lets you print probably more than 500-800 a4 photos if i can even estimate accurately. Being a consumer printer, it should be ok to leave it dormant for a few weeks, but ideally you print a nozzle test check every week to ensure nothing clogs. There is a seal that covers the print head within the printer and that may require some cleaning after extensive use, maybe after a year or so i believe. Home printers are designed to be left and not used daily, but commercial printers absolutely need to be worked hard or the head might clog.

    • @the.midlifers
      @the.midlifers Місяць тому

      Hey dont mention it! You are right we could have done it as such also for simplicity. And in hindsight, we prob should have ahah! But I guess also gotta consider that when you use a printer it can compress a larger dynamic range into an image (it kinda loses the instax contrasty look). I also think the print color space is a little bit different for digital images. Not saying it would matter, but I guess thats something that may affect the look of the films at the end and possibly our conclusions.

    • @terrybanet3330
      @terrybanet3330 Місяць тому

      @@the.midlifers See, now I was thinking it may not be the film but the two cameras might have two sensors that aren’t calibrated exactly the same so taking the digital image on one camera but printing it twice was actually more controlled.

    • @the.midlifers
      @the.midlifers Місяць тому

      oh what I thought you meant is that to to take the images on a conventional digital camera such as a Ricoh, transfer said image to your phone and get a fuji instant printer to print the same 10 images on both film types.

      If you click the shutter once in double exposure mode. you can force eject it by just switching the camera off. If not you have about 3mins before the camera auto ejects IIRC

  • @secretrat
    @secretrat Місяць тому

    As opposed to some commenters here, I actually bought one and use it. So far I'm both amazed and thrilled with it. The lens is terrific, absolutely sharp edge to edge without any distorion, I can't even force lens flare. The AUTO mode is perfect for new film shooters, but with exposure compensation and manual ISO knobs, plus slow shutter, wide aperture and Bulb mode it is a very useful camera for experienced users. The flash is remarkable for its size and can be used to optically trigger slave flashes. It has a non-proprietary 2.5mm shutter switch jack for a remote intervalometer or RF/IR remote. Yes bigger manufacturers, NON-PROPRIETARY. It has more features than my last film camera, bought in 1998 (for exactly the same price). Too bad that they have been far more popular than Ricoh/Pentax expected so if you want one now, you are going to have to wait.

    • @the.midlifers
      @the.midlifers Місяць тому

      We think it’s a great camera too! It’s just targetted more at beginners than the enthusiast crowd and because of that the hobbyists are little up in arms. I am sure if this is Pentax’s first film camera (in a while), there will be something in store for the enthusiasts in the future! Also one could say that the camera is a bit pricey. But this is more due to the fact that there are so many vintage cameras that are way cheaper (I would probably argue priced artificially cheaper than their worth) and readily available. So for those who know about cameras, that’s their biggest gripe.

  • @lelandfitz1762
    @lelandfitz1762 Місяць тому

    The lever looks a bit too short. I heard they took it from the Pentax 110 camera which of course was waaay smaller in size than the 17. Maybe a longer lever would prevent the turning of the dial

    • @theaussiewhinger
      @theaussiewhinger Місяць тому

      Perhaps. But I will just say that I've been using this camera every day for 2 weeks and never once did I accidentally flip the control dial to another setting. It might be a case of reviewers simply wanting to find things to put in the 'cons' list, to make a balanced review. Not a criticism, but just a thought.

    • @the.midlifers
      @the.midlifers Місяць тому

      Yes, the dial for me was quite easy to bump, but perhaps also because i needed more time to get used to the camera. It was a great camera nonetheless, the build was great and only the pricing was a bit steep for me to consider buying.

    • @lelandfitz1762
      @lelandfitz1762 Місяць тому

      @@the.midlifers Yes, I don't have one myself but the bumping into the dial and changing the settings is something *every* reviewer I watched and read had with the 17. But good to hear that with longer use you're able to not touch it that often. Hopefully Pentax is considering this if they make a 35mm in the same body one day. LIke have a pin in the middle of the dial to fixate it.

    • @lelandfitz1762
      @lelandfitz1762 Місяць тому

      @@theaussiewhinger Thanks for letting me know your experience. I haven't used it myself. And you are right, that this comes up in every review. But even Ricoh ambassador reviewers talked about that. So at least it's something that isn't quite well thought out. I'm sure it's not a deal breaker. For me: As the pictures of the 17 leaked before reviews came out, tha short lever caught my eye instantly. That's why I maybe react to people saying they bump into it more than others. Because I assumed at first glance that geting a hold of the lever one must really dig into the space beside the lever to catch it. Overall I am aware that a lot of reviewers criticize every camera too much. But I would've bought the 17 if it cost 300€ instead of 550€ where I live. There are also already cool accesories for it on the market. Maybe there will be a 3D-printed extender for the lever one day too.

    Nice composition in your photos i really like it. The quality of the pictures however is dismall, i wonder if somebody would really warm up for extremely noisy, low detail, flat and very low color fidelity pictures. And i`m not even mentioning film development and printing costs. And it will also take a long time before you can see your pictures back because you have to take at least 48 in succesion before the roll is full. • @the.midlifers

    Thanks for testing. Leica's Sofort Instant camera line really is only designed by Leica and more of a merchandise if you really want to have something "Leica". But Leica offers their own film for it, of course. Here in Germany a pack of ten (single) Instax Mini prints costs around 8-9€. If you buy Leica, you pay 10€. 10€ is the same price you have to pay if you want any special edition frames of Instax Mini prints. So: *Leica Mini film costs just as much as any Instax Mini film with colorful frame. And Leicas Mini film comes in two color frames, that Instax does not offer: gold and some "warm white tone".* You assume the warm white tone is what Leica calls the color of the print. But "warm white tone" is what the frame is called. So, if it is really *double the price* where you live, that is not representative to how Leica, at least in it's homeland, sells those. But thanks your test again, I always enjoy your thorough tests.

    Is that SX-70 600 modded (or on 600 mode if SX-70R PCB modded)? I see it's sporting the rare upgraded Powerbar with flash port on top

      Good eye! Yes this camera was modified with the sx70r pcb. And it has the power bar mod too. And yes it was on the 600iso mode
