    Done a few gigs with Andy T. just last year to be precise. he's often very unwell these days but he's still producing poetry with music and such a terrific dark writer. I met/know his daughter Chelle too, who i personally met at a Dälek concert in todmorden a few years back too. He told me he didn't own a copy of weary for years. I wish someone or at least a small printing press would remaster his book of poems which appeared on this release too. (I've got the jpegs on my computer, they just need to binded into a book)

    TS reminds me of Nickelback in that they both cracked the formula for a “good pop song” and they apply that formula in every single song to the point that there is absolutely no humanity remaining in their “art”. Very palatable, but also very easy to hate. I think this album sounded like AI Taylor Swift and just dreadfully boring. And lame. Every swear word was like nails on a chalkboard just sooo cringe. And I’ve been a fan of hers since 2006 or whatever but the last couple albums have been snoozefests.

    • @BurntDisc
      @BurntDisc Місяць тому

      Glad it wasn't just me who found the swearing cringey! Good analogy to Nickelback...I suppose by album 11 it's difficult to make anything that's gonna stand out and not be compared to your previous work

    • @juliarush111
      @juliarush111 Місяць тому

      @@BurntDisc yeah that woman is not meant to swear 😂 Honestly, there are definitely worse albums out there but I think I remember Eminem saying something like his music can be better than everyone else’s but his music is held at a higher standard because of his success and I assume it’s a similar situation for TS. I know that she will face criticism no matter what if she sticks to her original sound or tries something new, but I had high hopes for this album to either be a throwback to her old style or something completely new but it was neither and it just seemed so gutless. I also think she’s totally predatory with her marketing and how she scams her fans with her deluxe editions and super duper editions and mega editions and I’m pretty sure she knew these 31 songs weren’t worth it. So that’s irritating but she knows she has her fans by the b*lls and they’d buy anything from her.

    Dude, it's so damn hard to narrow it down to 5. Your picks made me think about what my criteria would be. Is it the songs that hit on a sociological level? (Decline, Fish In A Gun Barrel, Eat The Meek) Are they the songs that are the most rhythmically complex? Harmonically dense? The emotional songs? (Falling In Love, Drop The World) The funny songs? (Hotdog in a Hallway, Drink, Drive, Spill, My Vagina, Fun Things To Fuck) The songs that just make you wanna chug beer and do rails? Songs that are special to me for personal reasons? Songs that lift my spirits? Songs that I just happen to listen to the most? The songs that just don't sound like anything else I've ever heard? (Pods And Gods) The covers? I don't even know where to begin.

    • @sundog1979
      @sundog1979 Місяць тому

      @@BurntDisc I guess I'd be representing the hipsters, so, I will accept your apologies for your list. 1. The Quass - Great to kick off any NOFX mix tape. It starts out sounding like the band is just checking their gear. As the song takes shape, I start to feel charged and then you're hit with a wall of harmonies and the titular lyrics. It's glorious, short and funny. It'll probably never lead into any other song as well as it does Dying Degree, but whatever. 2. The "Heard They Suck Live" version of Beer Bong - Another great intro, the drum rhythm sounds like it's falling over itself. It just makes me feel like an ape; arms swinging low in the pit, shoulder checking and then you sing the ends of each verse line and then the chorus hits and its mayhem. Pure hilarious bliss. Pock marked by the belching/farting breaks and Hefe's "Do'h!" It's a ridiculous party anthem with a red carpet entrance that fills me with adrenaline and it's hilarious. 3. My Name Is Bud (I like the re-recorded version off the "Bottles To The Ground" single, but the "Fuck The Kids" version is good too) - I do not know the inspiration for this song, but it's another example of what I love about NOFX; adrenaline-inducing, unimportant, unserious or funny subject matter, this is charged ecstasy in under a minute. This song is my temporary cure for depression and my definition of fun. (also good reckless driving music) 4. Talkin About Yo Mama - One night hanging out and drinking and listening to records when this song came on I grabbed my friend by his stupid flannel collar and screamed this song into his face. He was laughing, it was funny. Good times. 5. Jamaica's Alright - definitely a hipster pick since I think you can only listen to it if you got the 7 inch from the first record ROTM club. It's silly. I like silly I guess. This song puts me in a good mood and makes me laugh. (also a good "cleaning up party trash" song) ya. Thanks for asking.

    Void may be sloppy, but the sheer energy and honesty makes it one of my faves. And DRI first two albums are definitive hardcore...all in my opinion of course. Thanks for the review. And I agree, the album is 95% listenable at any time of day. (and ya, the 80-86 thing is weird...im guessing they were planning a follow up as I remember 86 as being the last good year for hardcore until about 92-93...87 88 and 89 were dark dark years for hardcore as the bands of our youth grew bored of the monotony and violence and either went krishna or metal or both. 7Seconds went u2, Youth Of Today went krishna, Agnostic Front went metal, Discharge and Blitz went....oh...my...god, have you heard what they put out? What the actual fuck. Sick of it all put out some consistently good albums thru that time and Operation Ivy put out Energy, which was like angels singing to these tired ears, but that was pretty much the highlight until Gorilla Biscuits and Rancid came along and shook the cobwebs out of our ears, so yeah, the history of hardcore is pretty sectional(2010-2020 is pretty abysmal too, what with the pokies trying to redefine everything so everyone can feel included...like, Turnstile? What is that? And how is Lil Peep considered goth? But I digress) .(but ya, that doesn't explain the 1980 part)

      Oh, I probably did at some point. I definitely did, and it was good, but the album was in steady rotation when got it when it came out. I had most of the bands in vinyl and cd, but ya, altogether, it's a great listing of songs in one spot

      GB was around at the same time AF was going metal and Op Ivy was doing energy. Turnstile started as a hardcore band and their sound has changed, just like dudes in GB went onto stuff like Quicksand. Plenty of great hardcore came out in the last 15 years.

    The song 60% isn't an autobiographical song. It comes from the perspective of the antithesis of NOFX. Weird and foolish to be a NOFX fan and not catch that.

    • @BurntDisc

      I just think there's a line between sloppy but still good, and being absolutely sloshed to the point where the onstage banter is just rambling on and on with no humour and fighting your guitarist

    • @sundog1979

      @Ty-138 How do you know the song isn't autobiographical? The very first lyric, which btw means, "I'm here to get drunk and do coke," seems pretty on the money for Mike. All of the lyrics seem very autobiographical until the line, "Would you rather be fed bullshit, from some twenty-something, makeup-wearing pop-star?" At that point the song seems to turn from autobiographical to basically saying, "would you prefer that I played well and was fake as fuck like some other bands?" There are so many other songs where Mike sings about how he'd rather have a good time than play well; We Ain't Shit, Fuck The Kids, Stranger Than Fishin, etc. BTW, there have to be a million bootlegged performances, interviews and backstage footage of Mike being too fucked up to play "well." Point is, you're coming off kinda cunty by calling someone foolish because they may have misinterpreted song lyrics, which by the way, they didn't in my opinion. Just because you have an interpretation of the lyrics, doesn't mean you're right. You gotta back that shit up, Fucko. No one likes a know-it-all, but everyone hates a know-it-all that doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about.

    • @sundog1979

      I think that 60% is absolutely autobiographical. The opening lyrics are basically saying, "I'm here to get drunk and do coke." That seems pretty on brand for Mike. I think Burnt Disc was right to reference that song. Towards the end of the song he says [I'm paraphrasing] "would you rather that I played well and was fake like some other bands?" Burnt Disc could have also pointed to other songs such as, We Ain't Sh*t, Stranger Than Fishin and F*ck The Kids, to name a few. Between bootlegged live shows, backstage footage and interviews, there's no shortage of Mike explicitly stating that he prefers "having a good time" over playing well, most of the time. @Ty-138 What makes you think 60% is not autobiographical? Also, why do you feel justified in calling Burnt Disc foolish? Do you think that someone can't be a fan if they misinterpret lyrics or have a different interpretation than you? No one likes a know-it-all and everyone hates a know-it-all that doesn't know what they're talking about.

      @@BurntDisc that's fine if you don't find their stage banter humorous but you should have known all about that before you bought the house ticket. Always been pretty funny. If you didn't like that definitely don't go see the gimmes live. They are hilarious. You would have an awful time. Ha. Just fucking around. No hate in me, it's just that 60% is comparing a shitty drug dealer that cuts their product so much to sell to the consumers who are the whole reason why that dealer owns everything that they have to the many shitty bands do the same thing to their fans on a nightly basis.

    BROOOOOOO i've been looking for the band A for 20 years almost. They were featured on the first episode of a Québec tv show called 123 Punk, and as you hinted at their name has really prevented me from ever finding them as I has no song names or album to pair with A. Thank you so much, no idea if I will still like them as much as that one time as I have been quite disappointed by some bands I had also been searching for. But that's how it is.

    Great summary of what a Green Day show is like. I was lucky enough to see them on their first European tour when they were the warm-up act for Bad Religion. Short, sweet and generally OK - how they are best taken. Took my kids to see them 10 years ago (not my choice but they both loved them at the time) and it was exactly how you described it.
