The Bedford was the oldest bus there if you totally ignore the Guy Arabs. I remember riding on a Stockport Corporation Guy Arab in the mid sixties which still had its wartime blackout blind in the upstairs rear window. The blind was starting to look a bit tatty but they had not bothered to renew it. The bus ran like new but was slower than the Crossleys.
I certainly enjoyed the Alton bus rally
Terrific presentation David. And well done, Alex for giving it access to a wider audience. Best of luck with the project.↗
I helped put a clutch in 270 KTA and fit the green beading on the outside, when it was part of the WNPG! I didnt realise it had a 'chinese' gearbox, so we road tested it after the clutch was done, and wondered why it would race in 2nd but be sluggish in '3rd'. Little did i know on this gearbox, 3rd and 4th were opposite to what they normally are! On the A38 i got 65 mph out of it according to the speedo which i think may have been true, cos out chairman paul derrick was in bristol VR 1226 and maxed out at 45, and there i was a blot in the distance!
That's very interesting! Thank you for sharing!
James freeman!
This is brilliant! Such a good idea to help preserve our heritage for the future.
Don't forget to put up an anti-rust layer asap. It would rust🤔Put that on the main structure, those u want to keep
You should take photos of every part left, then start removing everything unneccessary from the cabin such as seats to begin with. The CMB AM1 restore project as a reference, it was in terrible corroded condition. Given the similar condition of both of them, the first thing you would like to do is to reinforce the frame by cutting off the weakened original frame and install newly cutted metal bars to replace it.
Great film though You do fantastic work😊25:30 Now there’s an accident waiting to happen- reverse order hand brake? Dumb design
Back in 1929, I guess they didn't know what would become the norm 95 years later...
I after seeing this beauty 1:49 they all suck compared to it- this brings to Mind the ADB BUS THEGMC RTX OF 1976 in America
One of the reasons why the bus survived is that the body was very robustly constructed. Much of the external panelling is one eighth of an inch, 3.2 mm aluminium sheet on a ‘tee’ section duralumin frame. I did a lot of the panel works including the front and rear domes and can vouch for its quality. As the original rivets were of an aircraft pattern I strongly suspect that much of the material was left over from wartime sub-contract work, Weymanns were close to Brooklands where many aircraft built. There were a lot of problems that needed to be resolved during the restoration but one in particular that caused me much ‘head-scratching’ was an apparent discrepancy with the rear axle and wheels. After a lot of research plus visits to other preservation groups I suddenly realised that the problem was the wheels! As originally built it was equipped with cross-ply tyres, but the Irish owners had decided to use radial tyres and had ‘modified’ the bus to suit. So the wheels on the bus were incorrect having a slightly deeper offset than the originals, this was needed to ensure that the rear wheels has sufficient clearance to avoid them rubbing together (the pair each side that is); this in turn pushed the wheels further out and the mudguards did not cover them so the converters cobbled together some wider mudguards to fit!! A simple modification that took weeks to solve; happy days. Too old and too much coffin dodging these days otherwise I would be near the front of the volunteer queue!
Thank you for sharing!
We have a few of the imported ones still in decent condition in Jamaica that came there in the 60 s .
What a gorgous vehicle. A real dream. The livery and colours, style and shape are very appealing. Leyland certainly made some great buses. AEC is a favourite, but, Leyland too, is easily competative.
The basic shape is there and not impossible to restore. Would love to see this Leyland Olympic restored. It's quite well known that LT had some very badly damaged vehicles that were rebuilt. They had the resources though. Good Luck!
Remember seeing a few in service but with BA livery. 65 were made yet only 68 RMC's. Strange, considering the size of the Green Line and country routes. Never liked the RML front wings preferring RM type with brake grills.
Well done. What a wonderful story about a magnificent machine.
Lovely film. Wonderful old buses. Thank you.
I do hope you manage to restore this bus, again. Great shame, if it ended being scrapped.
hi there, i would approach the vehice the folllowing way, the body completely removed and a full chassis inspection, then replace the components needed, then a complete re wire,a temporary driving seat installed made of angle iron and wood, so that whenthe time comes you can drive the chassis around, then mount a body, good luck, [ex AEC ltd]
Thanks for sharing
Utterly heartbreaking to see what a fire can do to even the best preserved buses. The biggest threat to preserved buses is fire, be it by arson or misfortune. How lucky it is that there are dedicated and talented people willing to restore what many would regard as beyond saving. The very best of luck to you and your restoration plans.
Well done getting there and good luck!
Good luck. "Survived" seems a tad optimistic.
I second that!!
Is the old wreck on the trailer an AEC Regal RF ? The wheels definitely look like they were from an ex London Transport/ London Country RF.
its a Leyland ! with 4 spoke steering wheel, [ p,smith ex AEC ltd ]
It is a 1950 Leyland Olympic HR40, registeration JAA 708.
sad to see, at least the chassis and running gear appear to have survived and with it being such a well documented restoration first time round hopefully there are enough drawings and patterns to enable it to be rebuilt and restored again.
I think that single decker is in some need of TLC.
A thoroughly delightful video.
Nice video I gave you a sub
Another happy bus vid. Britain at its best
Lovely video, nice that you got some interesting comments on the vehicles history etc from vehicles owners.
Excellent, many thanks. Good to get the histories.
Go down stokes bay and interview bluestar
i like made in England 👌👌🇬🇧🇬🇧🚐🚐
Lovely to see the old Buses that are still around , when l was a young lad living in Lambeth Walk in South London going around in RF & RM London buses their tick over (idling)was very soothing to me with my hearing aids on , my school was a deaf unit in Brighton called Ovingdean Hall School for the deaf. Memories l will never forget , now retired & Living in Melbourne Australia 🦘🐨🐊👍
Suddenly that song "Lambeth Walk" appears in my mind...
Hey Wallace, nice video maybe see you at the next location.
See you soon!
1016kgs in imperial ton. Just over 50kgs to the cwt.
I was there! A great lineup of buses this year
Amazingly put together, I saw myself a few times in the background 😂😂It was really nice to see you at the annual event.
Good to see you again and well, see you next time!
11:00 Not a good idea, they will still put their dirty feet on the pads
I do share your concern on this...but without that fold-up seat, they still pit their feet on the seat anyway!
Thank-you! Were there any RLHs out that day?
By looking at the list of vehicles information I have for that day , I am not sure if any Regent Low Height buses were there that day.
made in England 👌👌👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hurrah and thank-you!
That's pretty cool
I attended Epsom School of Art & Design (now called the University of Creative Arts) from 1968. However i lived in Surbiton , so i had to pick up the 406 from the Ewell Road, which took me directly to Epsom. I also used to catch it to go into Kingston, if the (red) 281 or 283 didn't arrive on time. The best service, which never seems to be mentioned, was the 418, which was closer to my home in Berrylands. Always on time!
Another great video.
Another excellent video. Lovely old buses. There is something particularly nice about the whole King Alfred setup.
Very cool, thanks!
Excellent job 😊
What a fantastic video! Well done!
Thank you very much!
Unbelievable that LEYLAND’s gone!
