The special grease when added to a wick on the 201-2 and 201-3 motors we are told has to warm up to melt the grease to allow the grease to be then wicked up to then lubricate the shaft on the motor. I have found that this is incorrect as the wicking process happens within 8 hours at room temperature. What does happen is that the oil within the grease is wicked out of the grease and then onto the motor shaft at normal room temperature and does not have to be warmed by the motor. No pre loading of the wicks is needed and in fact I would discourage this as you are putting the base of the grease into parts of the motor when all you are after is the oil within the grease.(DO NOT use any oil on the motor parts) Original Singer lube had "non flowing" on the tube which meant that when heated it would stay in its original state and not melt and would stay stable within the full temperature range of a working motor. Not what we are told by some that it has to melt, which is incorrect as it doesn't. We are also told that you can use Vaseline on the wicks which Singer strongly advised you didn't along with oil (which you never use on this type of motor) I have shown you that the Vaseline will simply block important oil ways within the motor. Also shown is how the grease is added at the grease caps is allowed to escape into a void under the worm gear so its not forced into the motor itself. Over the years this builds up and then hits the worm gear then forcing the old grease around the internal parts of the motor housing. This has been incorrectly interrupted as you have to add new grease back into the internal parts of the housing. This is incorrect.
The only grease I use is Sew Retro Sew Grease from the Featherweight shop as I have tested the hell out of it along side the original Singer lube and have found it identical in every way, high melt point, non flowing etc.
I will talk about where you do add a little grease in the motor in part 2.
P.S. Please don't use the flour and oil grease I made up it was just an example of how a grease can work.
