Hello guys! Thanks for coming to my channel. My name is Selvin Selbaraju, I'm 20, from London and currently studying Economics at King's College, Cambridge. My aim with this channel is to give advice to all students out there because being a teenager is tough and everyone needs help at times. I'm going to share all the things I wish someone had told me before, and tips I did/did not implement which have made my earlier student life more enjoyable.

AN INTRODUCTION TO ME
Переглядів 1,9 тис.6 років тому
Thanks for coming to my channel. I’m starting a vlog on how to succeed highly in student life in both happiness and grades. I’m at Cambridge studying Economics and wanted to share my advice how to achieve your academic goals.
When are you coming back?
Yo bro. Will it make me $100 million
hi Selvin, just came across your channel. I did quite badly in the admissions assessment but i think the interview went okay. what do you think my realistic chances are of getting in?
There are a many more factors that affect your chances besides the admissions test; A Level grades, personal statement, sometimes college choice, etc. but the fact that you got an interview places your chances at generally around 20%. If you got like a 5.0 or above in the tmua + A*A*A minimum and got an interview then your chances lie at that 20% mark, if your stats are better then that percentage increases. Take my words with a pinch of salt as I am also applying this year and am far from an expert - this is the knowledge I've gathered through various sources on the journey so far. Hope this helps!
lmao how did you get the fruit ninja font that's pretty cool
Currently in y12 doing maths, english lit, economics, do you think doing further maths as an AS level in y13 would be beneficial for BSc Economics?
Did you consider a data science masters degree?
Hi I’m doing Further maths, Maths and economics would I get into economics at Cambridge with those A levels?
I'm guessing u just wanna go into finance when ur older or something. Maths is harder and it's more impressive however history and politcis is just more important. I think Econ needs less maths and more thinking. The maths can be outsourced.
Thank you so much for the video!! But also i just started y12 and my goal is cambridge economics I originally did fm,maths, econ and history as my alevels but i’ve recently dropped history ,do you think i’ll be at a disadvantage in applying while only doing 3 alevels.
What made you transition from banking to data science - was it to do with the hours in ib or nature of the work being more interesting in data science?
Tbh I think both. I didn’t like the others but also most of the work I was doing wasn’t that technical
@@SelvinsStudent101 Yeah ib hours don't sound great - did you consider doing a masters in data science or just decided to go straight into a data science job?
@@SelvinsStudent101 Just wondering if you could shed any light on the question below?
the way it was really light outside at the start of the video and pitch black by the end! 10/10 for commitment to this channel!
What a levels did you take, and what graded did you get in them?
I did Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Physics. I got an A* in each of them except an A for Physics
extremely helpful for someone who is about to go to cambridge for economics this fall like me:) preciate that
It’d be awesome if you release some IB related videos soon :)
Planning too soon!
I’ve got an offer! Thanks for the help
Congrats!
Do you think Maths, History and English lit would stand a chance at getting me into this course? It’s too late for me to change my subjects but econ is something I have become passionate about and want to pursue.
I think it’s going to be tough to do it at Cambridge because the course is so mathematical. But if you are strong with your maths there is no reason you couldn’t try applying :)
reckon ur better off going into PPE or oxford economics and management
Hi Selvin, can you do a video about how to get into ib and how to succeed in uni? I go to ucl but just need some advice
Hi Cryptic, sorry I’ve been very busy recently but am planning on making some career videos soon! Watch this space
@@SelvinsStudent101 thank you selvin! And also advice you would give to 1st years apart from spring weeks and joining societies! And what to do between 1st and 2nd year to maximise chances ! Thanks
@@crypticgod1134 I think the most important thing is to find about what investment banking actually is and to decide if you want to do it. Also, getting any sort of work experience that is somewhat related is a good idea so you have something to talk about in the interview. Also, apply early and try to get a referral from someone!
@@SelvinsStudent101 thanks. For online assesments like numerical and sjt do you recommend any website / any advice on how to prep for these?
@@crypticgod1134 not any in particular, I would just google and see what you find
Thanks for the informative video. I’m currently in year 12 studying Alevel Chemistry, Maths and Economics. I’m wanting to study Economics at Cambridge so I’m going to do AS Level Further Maths in Year 13. Do you think this would be as helpful as Alevel Further Maths or should I try to get onto the Alevel Further Maths course?
Hi Suleman, AS Further Maths will be fine for getting in, although I always recommend Further Maths because it makes the standard maths feel easier. You also learn interesting topics that are used at university. However, given you want to study economics, the mechanics sections aren’t needed (but are fun to learn). So I think just follow your interest. I really loved further maths
@@SelvinsStudent101 no more ecaa, they use tmua for economics this year
I’m in Year 12 right now and my school didn’t offer further maths. I’m studying Maths, Economics, Physics and Chemistry. How big of a disadvantage will I be at in the application process, and during the course?
Once you get on the course they teach the content in a very different way to A-level so no problem there. You may be less comfortable with the maths in the ECAA if you haven’t done further however
My interview is in less than 2 weeks! Hoping for the best
Good luck!
do you know how much you scored in the ECAA?
Nope, they don’t tell you
@@SelvinsStudent101 Did you include diagrams as we do in A-Level???
@@chewypiano7194 not really, the essay isn’t like that. It’s more about arguing your point across. The essay content isn’t that economicsy
@@SelvinsStudent101 thank you
Do you think Warwick's MMORSE program is worth doing? (I have quite similar career interests to you, potentially IB or some sort of data science haha)
I’ve just taken a look at the overview and it does sound good! It may be too mathematically theoretical depending on what you want to do. However, if you are keen on doing more maths than economics I think it sounds good. Again, this is just my interpretation and I didn’t study it
@@SelvinsStudent101 good to know! I am applying for Economics at Cambridge too, was just wondering
Videos on investment banking would be appreciated man
Sure! What sort of things would you like to know? Can try get this done in the next couple of weeks
Is there an admissions test for all subjects at Cambridge?
I’m not too sure, but I know the vast majority of subjects do have one
How easy is it to transition from economics to data science/ machine learning?
Econometrics and machine learning are quite similar, but obviously still some stuff that would need to be learnt. However, if you are willing to put the time and effort in it’s definitely doable!
What a levels did u take and what did u get pls let me know asap I’m thinking of studying economics
Hi, I did Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics and got A*s in all but Physics. However, the actual requirements are A*A*A so that’s a better guideline
@@SelvinsStudent101 hey do I need further maths to get in a good uni for economics I’m a month in year 12 and I I’m really unsure
You don’t need Further Maths but it is useful to have. It also makes Single Maths seem easier
Give the people what they want
First
Hi Selvin Thanks for the useful series. Which colleges are best to apply for economics at Cambridge?
Hi Veera, I wouldn’t say there is necessarily a best college because everyone does the same lectures. Supervisions do vary between colleges though. I don’t have much insight there, but I think King’s is good because the supervisors are also the lecturers of several first year modules. I would however pick a college based around what you like from a more cultural perspective, like the size and location
@@SelvinsStudent101 thanks Selvin. We have short listed Kings, Trinity and St John’s so far. Hope to narrow it down to one soon. Cheers
Hey I'm gonna go in year 13, in my first year of college i did biology, chemistry, business studies & maths. However dropped my business studies, even though I was doing pretty good on it, because at the time I wanted to go in the scientific field. So do you think I have a chance of getting into cambridge & do a degree in economics?
It may be slightly tougher. The main things you would need to convince the college of is your mathematical ability (because you don’t do further) and why you want to do economics (as it seems you are quite scientific). Given I don’t know you mathematical ability or your general grades I can’t give a strong judgement, but I would always say no harm in applying :)
@@SelvinsStudent101 thank you a lot for your reply, I'm currently predicted an A* for maths and As for the the sciences, but hopefully I will achieve 3 A* in my A-levels. I'm thinking to take a gap year so I believe I will apply next year after getting my results. One of my best friend does economics, do you think learning from his books would boost my chances of getting in?
@@redfireninetales6947that’s good to Hear! Regarding your friend’s books, it would mostly help with interviews and the sorts of stuff they could ask. Then again, you could overprepare and not quite understand the way they’ve asked the question. I personally wouldn’t take a look at the books to prepare but up to you :)
Hi! Did you do TSA when you applied to Cambridge economics, and did you do ECAA?
Hey, TSA is for Oxford. ECAA is for Cambridge so that’s the one I did :)
@@SelvinsStudent101 thx alot
Hi! It was very helpful! btw, I have a question. How much math did you learn throughout the year? Also, how important is math at Oxford econ?
Learnt lots of maths, and I’m not sure about Oxford as I didn’t study there! I’ve heard it’s less than Cambridge though because it’s Economics and something else
Thanks a lot for the video. I think the admission test is going to stop me from getting a interview though. I basically started studying in year 12(disintegrated do GCSE,international student) and my math based is weak. I’ll try to work on it this summer holiday but it does not look well.
I chose Maths Econ and psychology, will this be enough to get me to this course, and if it's harder then I'll learn further maths in my own time since just maths is a bit easy
I think if you could do Further Maths it would be better, as you get the topics you need to know
@@SelvinsStudent101 if it isn't required then it is fine bcz I've already chosen these subjects however I think FM will help me with the entrance exam so I'll be learning it on my own
Strong bench press for such a small skinny guy. Would have expected only 1 plate for your size
How did you do on your tsa?
And how were your a level grades a*a*a* I assume
@@otdo5606 hey because I got accepted, they don’t provide scores at Cambridge. For A levels, I got A* A* A* A (A in Physics)
@@SelvinsStudent101 ok thank you. I was also wondering how much of an advantage 4 over 3 A levels puts you at
@@SelvinsStudent101 and did you take further maths ?
@@otdo5606 yep I did
Selvin, on a scale of one to ten, how would you like to be contacted for a partnership with the company I'm interning at, because I can't find an email anywhere
You are doing great.... I've been following you, keep going
Thank you!
Hi there! Do you think you would need any prior knowledge apart from Maths and Economics? I currently study maths, fm, physics and economics but am unsure if I need to have any prior political or historical knowledge for those papers? Thanks.
You don’t need any prior historical or politics knowledge. I had none!
Would you say you would definitely need Further Maths in order to have a chance of getting in? I’ve picked Maths, Chemistry, Economics for my A Level Options and have always enjoyed maths.
I think you don’t necessarily need further maths. The most important part of the application process is graph sketching and maybe some probability questions. It’s usually that people who have done further maths are more comfortable with this, but it’s not necessarily the case
Hey, that was a really infromative video. How do u reckon the Cambridge Econ course differs from LSE? Even though I'm in Y12, I don't know whether to concentrate my time and resources onto getting into Cambridge if I don't want to go there or if I see LSE is a better fit for me.
To be honest, I’m not sure what the LSE course entails. I think LSE is better from a careers perspective but Cambridge teaches you more Economics in more detail and teaches you to think in a certain way.
Hi, Selvin, I really hate math, but I got an A* in it, I really like economic, would you think that Cambridge University's economic degree will fit with me?
Tbh no, if you don’t like maths, it will be tough because a lot of the derivations are done using maths and the questions are mostly using maths
How important do you think it is to do economics at level? I'm doing maths further maths physics and English and I'm wondering if this will put me at a disadvantage
To be honest, some of the concepts may seem a little weird at first, but they do somewhat teach the concepts too. You could look some high level concepts like monopoly, perfect competition ahead of time. Not the maths, just what they are and the assumptions. Hope that helps!
Thanks so much for your reply :)
You said the politics/history papers have a lot of reading. I've got a lot of free time right now, would I be able to do some of it before I get to Cambridge this Autumn?
You can, but it’s not a good use of your time. Learn some new skills instead!
May I ask where else you applied apart from Cambridge? What's Ur view on LSE. (Thinking of my non Oxbridge choices)
I applied to LSE, Warwick, UCL and Bristol as wel. My view on LSE is that it’s great for careers but some people I have spoken to said it wasn’t very fun and most people just did what they wanted, not a big sense of community. But I can’t comment properly as I never went!
Did you ever consider applying to the USA for university? To study economics? I know Harvard has a great economics course
Yes I did, US was initially my top choice but unfortunately I did not get into any!
Keep up the videos man, they're very useful. If there was something that you could tell your younger self, what would it be? Not necessarily academic, just in general :) thank you
Thank you! I think I would want to tell my past self to be more confident and to the do the things I enjoyed more
What grade did you get in your degree? Are you going to do a masters?
I got a first and no plans to do an Economics masters at the moment.
@@SelvinsStudent101 congrats must have worked hard.
@@annajones9701 haha thank you
Equilibirum doesn’t exist tho
Hey Selvin, your journey is very inspirational! I wish i had found your videos earlier haha, I'm in year 13 and already sent off my application... May i ask why Maths and Econ at LSE didn't appeal to you? Also, is it possible we can connect on linkedin? :)
I think I didn’t want to do any pure abstract maths at university, I mainly wanted to do applied maths
@@SelvinsStudent101 oh right, thank you!
