Sailing Sea Dream of Clyde
Приєднався 26 бер 2015
Here you will find videos of young(ish) folks sailing aboard a 1979 Westerly Discus sailboat around the west coast of North America and soon, beyond. We focus on making videos centered around the sailing aspects of our trips, showing folks around the nice places where we anchor, plus occasional bits of natural history, as well as local knowledge we have picked up over the years.

In this one, we awake to an incredible dolphin show that comes right to the boat! With Maca and Kevin aboard, we don't let some light winds bring us down; as we sail at a snails pace, two humpback whales pay us a visit! Once the wind does come up, its FISH ON once again as we land a beautiful mahi-mahi. We snorkel on a wreck in Bahia Salinas, then continue to the spectacular Isla Coronados wher...

In our video series, it's now mid-winter in Mexico, and oh, how sweet it is! Kat and I enjoy a nearby island off Puerto Escondido before she heads off the boat for almost a month. Now alone on the boat, Trevor tackles some wild Elephanta winds raging off the Sierra de la Giganta that included gusts to 67 knots! Kevin (who sailed with us from Neah Bay to San Francisco) rejoins the boat, along wi...

At last, the swell is behind us! After over 2000 miles of sailing down the exposed coast of North America, our journey continues as we sail into the tranquil waters of the Gulf of California, slowly leaving behind the mighty Pacific Ocean and it's constant rolling swell. Leaving behind the seaside mansions at La Pamilla, we are surprised at how the swell wrapping around the bottom of the Baja Peninsula continues to follow us i...

In this one, we continue our trip down the coast to Cabo San Lucas. Some 100 miles north of the cape, we encounter an epic concentration of wildlife both in the sky and in the water while crossing over some l...

Whew! Lots going on in the video! This one starts out in Bahía Asunción on the Baja West Coast. We a strong easterly coming, we shift to our anchorage location to lessen the fetch. While heading to shore, we learn a hard lesson on timing surf landing in a dinghy, which results in a dead dinghy engine. After a robust but short sail to San Hipólito, we enjoy a relaxing day at anchor there. Next, ...

Nice video! Could you please share more info about "Chica" Marina, please. We will be in that area in a few weeks. Thanks in advance!
It's the small basin within the Puerto Escondido marina. Depending on what slip one is assigned, it can be tight to get into, but it is so nice and quiet back there, so it's worth the trouble in my mind. Also, as of February this year, the water was not metered in the chica basin, so you save some cash, too! If you'd like a less expensive option, the mooring field is pleasant. There is a weekly rate that is much less than daily. If you opt for the mooring field, you can fill up on potable water at the fuel dock either by pulling your up or with jugs. Enjoy your time around Loreto. It's a fantastic zone :) Cheers!
@ Thanks so much!
Our pleasure!
Seeing the pot plant go over the side is somewhat irresponsible especially when there's already a ton or more rubbish in the ocean. Gerard.
It was a basil plant with no plastics of any kind. It will have simply decomposed :)
Throwing a basil plant from San Francisco into the Sea of Cortez could have ecological consequences due to the potential for introducing non-native species into a new environment. Although basil is unlikely to thrive or spread invasively in a marine ecosystem, it could carry small organisms like bacteria, fungi, or even insects that aren’t native to the area. This can disrupt the local ecosystem, potentially harming native species or unbalancing existing relationships between marine and plant life. Also, ecosystems like the Sea of Cortez are particularly sensitive, hosting unique biodiversity. Introducing even small, seemingly harmless species from elsewhere is generally avoided in order to protect these environments from invasive species and diseases.
But otherwise I enjoyed the video.
Thank you for thinking so much of the environment, something we most certainly share with you. Regarding the old basil plant, I think we disagree on this one. I'm very certain that almost dead terrestrial plant will have quickly sunk to the sea floor, posing no threat to the local environment. On the other hand, the plethora of imported food flying all over the world most certainly does corrupt local environments. We believe disposing of organics in the sea well alway from land is the most responsible method of dealing with our food scraps while cruising. Sending it to a landfill would certainly pose more risk of spreading invasives while also creating methane gas when decomposing in an abiotic environment. Thanks for your throughful comment. :)
Cheers!

It was a real grade A week on the boat! Thanks, David!
Beautiful!
It was quite the week around Loreto! Whales, dolphins, dorado, and oh so much great scenery!
@@SailingSeaDreamofClyde it is so pretty there. I hope you keep having lots of adventures, be safe & sail on❤️
Thanks! After a summer of working back home, we're heading back to the boat in just a few weeks to resume the adventures! Mexico for the winter, then across the ocean to Hawaii, Alaska, then home!

Last week i posted a vlog of the inside of my boat, if you have not seen it, the link is SV GEMSTAR. please leave a comment like and hit the bell as i will be posting more vlogs. Gerard.
G"day. I went to the hospital early this week and had an hernia repaired all went well. Before that i made a vlog of the inside of my boat. I did a different approach because my voice is not good enough for vlogging. Please let me know what you think. The link is, SV GEMSTAR. Gerard.
Hey Gerard! That's great your working ok making some videos. I'll have a look and comment on it to let you know what I think. Cheers! -Trevor
Love seeing our old boat
And we're so glad you reached out to us and shared those amazing photos from Sea Dream's early days! In a few weeks, we're going to meet the previous owners of SDOC who sailed her across the Atlantic and then trucked her across the continent to Vancouver! They live very close to my home base and had been searching for SDOC for years.
Good you missed out minus 10. Enjoy your tripTrevor and Cat!
We certainly didn't miss those cold spells last winter. Cheers!
Awesome video guys !
Cheers!
Nice videos. a little like the stuff I'm creating... 👍
Cheers! I'll have a look at your channel :)
Cool that Kat got to have her brother out with you guys for a few days. Looks like he fell right into the rhythm of boat life. It was also cool to see that Dorado jump up out of the water trying to shake the hook. I wonder if the hook didn’t set properly… Looks like the boat is doing well and you guys are getting to sail it when you can.
Loren was great to have aboard! Hopefully he and Zaia will make it down again this coming winter, too. Those dorado are very powerful fighters and are pretty good at shaking the hook when they jump like that. Fortunately, there seem to be lots of them, and they hit regularly!
Super vid, living the dream🤘
Cheers! Life is pretty sweet in Mexico :)
Looks fun! From San diego
Cheers!
Nice to have friends on board for a few days. When i go sailing on my boat, I am usually on my own as i have a couple of disabilities. I do not let that stop me from enjoying life however it does make it difficult to form strong friendships and relationships that will last.Very nice vlog. Gerard.
Cheers, Gerard. We appreciate your encouraging comments and are glad to hear you get out and enjoy the beautiful ocean despite facing some adversities. The sense of self-sufficiency and addition skills needed that come with solo sailing are something to be proud of!

I’d like to see you, try it without using the mask slugs, but by clearing down the bottom and winching it as tight as you can. It would be a lot easier to build one like that and you can move it from boat to boat.
That's a good and interesting idea! I'll give that a try once back to the boat this fall and let know you. Cheers!
Sadly, they are very short staffed and and no longer taking boats for salvage. Jeff told us he's planning to sell the operation and retire by Nov.
I'm sorry to hear it's winding down, but hopefully someone comes in and keeps it going. It really is a priceless resource for the PNW boating community, along with van converters, too.
Here for the nacho content. :D
I still can't believe we did not think to make nachos aboard until then! 😁
@@SailingSeaDreamofClyde We did campfire pulled pork a few years ago in a dutch oven, which then resulted in camping nachos. Where there's a nacho will there's a nacho way. :D
Congrats to the couple getting engaged. I wish them well. Gerard.
Thanks Gerard!
@8:06 lurking Nordhavn in the background. 😍
They're good looking boats!
Thanks for the cleanup action! I try and do the same while out on MTB rides. My friends are always asking how I even spot the little bits of bar wrappers and such that I collect, but once you start looking you (unfortunately) see a lot! As you said, it only takes a little effort to help keep nature natural (and even less to prevent the trash from accumulating in the first place).
It really is wild how much trash is scattered throughout the environment. Next winter, we're going to work on organizing some beach clean-ups while we're sailing in the Gulf of California. The beaches there aren't to bad for trash, but some less visited spots have many years of accumulated plastic bottles and fishing gear piled up that we'd like to clear out. Cheers to also taking the time to clean up nature!
Nice to be able to play music out in the open. I have an interest in music and i practice on a harmonica. Gerard.
Indeed, may aswell play some nice tunes to pass the time while waiting for wind :) Thanks for watching :)
What is the make and length of your vessel? Looks comfy!
33 ft Westerly Discus. They did an amazing job designing it! Super roomie for a 33.
Icebergs are not dangerous at all. Unless you hit one..
Haha, you bet! In my 2022 trip, I unexpectedly came across a couple very far from a glacier that scared me!
The humpback was resting/sleeping just on the surface. Pretty amazing sight to see!
It is indeed amazing getting to see those wonderful creatures!
Absolutely amazing! I’ve been there many times on the Alaskan story. A large Westport yacht. I will take my sailboat up there soon! Loving the videos!
I hope your get up there on your own sailboat soon! What's your boat? Cheers.
Never approach a dock, or anything else on the water, any faster than you want to crash into it. Love your videos. Reminds me why I have a sailboat.
You bet! Unfortunately, part of why that docking went literally sideways was I was too timid coming in, which allowed the current to take over. Glad you're loving our videos! Cheers!
Thx was allot of help!
My pleasure!
Thx! My filter looks a bit different. One long bolt in the middle of the filter but also washable. 😊
Looked like a great adventure!! Love the dock sewing haha
Gotta do what ya gotta do!
@@SailingSeaDreamofClyde it’s that kind of creativity with the use of space that I love
Sounds like getting into/out of La Paz was an adventure in and of itself! I've never made it that far but a few friends have spent a couple seasons in the Sea of Cortez. I guess the underwater life and scenery is amazing! I had a rough time docking in Baranof Warm Springs last week. Two knots of current from the waterfall on the nose and 15 knots of wind behind me! Fortunately the two cancelled each other out and I stuck the landing. Did a 250 mile race around Admiralty. Cool that you guys got some company. More hands on deck. Anxious to see if you catch larger mahi mahi though!
La Paz certainly is an interesting harbor to transit! I was actually just editing a scene in the next video where we land a really big Mahi! Stay tuned! Glad to hear your getting some good sailing in!
Nice guys, enjoy!
Thanks!
