Did around 500 hours charter in Australia in the 55 great machine.
i dont get it with the people who want all the help possible -the whole point is to have it as close as possible to the analog bike and rm powerplay is the closest to that by far- might as well get one that has a throttle too than use it when its too steep and hard to climb it will be a lot safer than have the overrun do random things.
Just in case you're more of a step by step kind of guy, you might be interested in Baker Henistole's method to get rid of chest fat within 30 days or less. You can measure the results within the first week, go’ogle him to see what I mean.
I had a 2023 Rocky Mtn Altitude 4.0 . It required a lot more rider energy than a Brose, Bosch or Yamaha to get the most out of it. The biggest drawback was the battery charging system overcharged the battery and the battery exploded and burned everything in my garage to ashes. Rocky Mountain seemed to want to help, but in the end they just wanted to get the burned bike out of my possession and pretend it never happened. They hired a bunch of lawyers to threaten me from telling this true event. I feel a duty to warn potential buyers of the very real danger of keeping a Rocky Mountain bike indoors. The damage to my home and property is over 350k, and I am lucky to be alive. Don't take the risk with a Rocky Mountain E-MTB. It is not worth it.

@@FWCaptain-kv6sm If a rider is young and rides frequently a high rpm bike with a dyname motor is fine, other than the fire potential, but for the occasional rider the new Shimano EP801 with the latest update will be quicker on most trails. Plus the RockyMtn electronics constantly needs to be reset on the middle of rides. The Shimano just works great everywhere. Your heart rate will be at least 25 bpm higher on the RockyMtn, and you will be more tired after the ride, you may go faster up some climbs, but you will really have to work for the speed. The Shimano will seem like a refined bike, the RockyMtn will feel like it needs refinement.
This really sucks! I'm sure you're home owners insurance covered you but it is still hell dealing with the hassle of the construction and the loss of some things you won't replace. I try to keep my Rocky Mountain Powerplay Altitude charged to 30% stored buy is drops pretty fast so I gotta keep my eye on it. I try to pull it off at 80-90% to keep from over charging. My 58 soon to be 59 and it gets me on the trail riding. My girlfriend has a Marin Alpine E1 trail with the Shimano E7000 motor and it gets her were she wants to go but there warranty department in our experience is not great. I have to ride with a Leatt C frame pro knee brace as I don't have a ACL in my left knee and had ruptured my patella ligament in 2021. Anyway sorry about your experience with Rocky Mountain and your house. That all sucks really bad and I know it was a nightmare for you. I hope you new bike treats you well. Sounds like you gotta winner this time.

I'm about to buy a used a70 for cheap, low miles but unknown warranty for the moment. Should I go for it? because the bike feels amazing but 3800$ for it to burn down?
Always appear dorky with an MTB helmet. That was the case riding a Rocky Mountain powerplay instinct, on desolate trail in the Adirondacks, with a ball-cap, covering my skull. Lot's of torque in that Dyname motor, even for a guy weighing 245(pounds). Motor overpowered me going down, went off trail into rocks, roots, and some big trees, which helped stop me from goingover a cliff. Three busted ribs, broken elbow, collarbone, multiple contusions(including the skull). Yip. Now I own, and always use, five different full-face helmets. Ya can never have enough protection. That Dyname motor, does escape the rider, without warning.
Need a different camera angle. Can’t see anything with this one.

When I was a new MEI in the mid-70’s, feathering one and re-starting was required. Then, it was stopped in the 90’s as I recall. Then, it was required again… It seems ridiculous to create an intentional emergency, just to simulate an emergency. 50% of the time I have shut one down in the last 50 years, we have difficulty re-starting. Why bother doing it?
I am a little confused, you said to turn towards the dead engine which is the left engine and you make a right turn. What did I missed?
In the first 2 minutes, I showed an incipient spin after loss of control below VMC. Hopefully that helps.
Had one quit in a BE-58 IMC. Learned two things. 1) Cross controlling in IMC is a strange sensation. 2) Landing roll was a lot longer due to less drag.

By the book. Half and 5. Left engine failed. All my turns were to the right. I was at 8000'. Bases were 2000'. Bumpy..of course. Not a fun day.
If an engine fails in a twin, the other engine promptly takes you to the crash site 😢
In the late 70's there was a ex. Navy pilot acting as chief pilot of a small charter company, he had just hired a new pilot also ex Navy, so he takes him up to check him out on a Baron 58, they were at 1500 Agl. he pulls throttle back on one engine and as they approached VMC he thought to himself " I hope this new pilot doesn't try to hold altitude" but he had confidence that since he was also ex-Navy this would not be likely. Well this new hire " did " try to hold altitude, before the chief pilot could do anything they were in a spin. First he pulls other throttle back to idle and opposite rudder to spin but it wouldn't stop spinning, in the Navy he had training on how to recover a aircraft that didn't want to recover, he started rocking the elevator in and out, this worked but then it quickly was spinning the other direction, he was running out of altitude and was pretty sure he would never see his wife again. He is at 500 Agl now pointed straight at the ground as he stops the secondary spin but knows if he pulls hard on the stick it will stall again, so he pulls back gently but as much as he dare's, he avoids the secondary stall but the ground is too close and he cuts a swath through the tree's. The Baron was a write-off, both pilots get some time in the hospital but it could have been worse.

At 2:48 you say "...rudder opposite of the spin", but the simulation shows you stepped on the left rudder pedal, into the spin. What am I getting wrong here?

I'm a single engine pilot and frankly I think these lights twins are plain dangerous . If an engine fails in a single you don't drop into a spin .. you lose altitude sure .. but under control ...big difference . I know of a recent case where a Cessna 310 had an engine fail on approach ...possibly an engine idle problem ..anyway it was too late to fix the issue ..aircraft rolled and 2 died . In a single engine you would just land short of the runway ..and likely walk away . To fix the danger of light twins rolling after losing an engine the engines should be cross coupled mechanically via a drive shaft and clutch or electrically via motor -generators ..Inventors are you there? Com'mon you can do it . Until then I won't be flying light twins ..or R44's either
I do agree that light twin is the epitome of an overly complex aircraft. Unless you have a specific mission, such as flying over mountains or water for extended periods with a heavy load, a twin will do the job just fine.

Will the plane fly in circle if rudder is straight? How big will be the radius of this circle? Will it be able to gain altitude?
With one engine inoperative, the plane will not maintain directional control or maintain altitude, without the correct control inputs and feathering of the dead engine
Showing proficiency of single eng. operation and all which must be done to maintain flight is far different than an engine that packs up @ 200ft on take-off. Most accidents occur during TO/landing and there are some light twins marginally powered that can be more “dangerous” to operate than others. Aviation can be inherently dangerous even if everything goes right and all procedures are followed. Prohibited from intentional spins for good reason. Lose complacency.
Correct. I didn't even discuss the one engine operation procedure in the video starting with DEAD FOOT - DEAD ENGINE. You absolutely right about the loss of 80% of excess thrust after failed engine. High density altitude combined with non-turbo single engine and you are descending even clean and feathered.
yes .. this dangerous engine out roll characteristic of light twins is not acceptable . Pilots are getting killed even with an instructor on board because even an instructor cannot recover the aircraft . I call it a design flaw .They should be banned until it is fixed .. either by cross coupling the engines or we go back to Cessna 337 style aircraft .
@@danobrien3601 Burt Rutan has some interesting designs aiming to address conventional light twin limitations. Not all have been commercially successful. Moreover, counter rotating twins seeks to eliminate the critical engine. As long as airlines continue to demand multiengine pilots, the light twin trainer will continue to exist.

This is all fine except, if your stall speed is close to Vmc! The point of the exercise is identification and immediate recovery, better still avoid it. I certainly would not allow the aircraft to yaw as far as depicted in the simulation. Vmc demonstrations do produce, an uncontrolable yaw into the dead engine and if Vmc is close to stall speed you would have a very high risk of a sudden onset full spin. I had an experience in Jet Stream 31, a simple stall at 17,000 feet, 15,000 AGL. We went through a skiff of cloud in the climb, no visible ice, the aircraft stalled 20 knots above the calculated stall speed, rolled right to a 110 degree bank in about 1 second. That ended the stall training. Now think Vmc demo and that happens. Ah the oh shit factor. All I am saying is safety first, expect the unexpected! No need to self induce a point in your shorts.
Interesting story, I suppose the ailerons produced different angles of attack. This simulation is a failed Vmc demo. I intentionally put in the wrong inputs to show the incipient spin phase.
@@drethanplasticsurgery I realize the demo was a demo. But in reality Vmo if demonstrated at max power will produce a violent yaw/roll into the failed engine. There is nothing slow about it. The Vmo training is done to drive home the danger and to avoid getting there. A practical example of why Vmo training is done, would be a 3 engine departure in a four engine aircraft. I have done this once, a special ferry permit needed, essential crew only.

I was told if you spin a Baron below 15,000 feet you will die. If you spin above 15,000 feet, there is a slim chance you might not die.

Many spins in the Barons go flat and become unrecoverable. Consider adding weight in the nose compartment to help avoid unrecoverable flat spins.
Yes more weight in the nose moves CG forward, increasing the lever arm of the rudder, lowering VMC. The D'Shannon vortex generator kit for the Baron calls for placement VGs only the left side of the rudder, taking into the consideration the critical engine
In most of these light twins, you should never let the aircraft approach stall speed during this demo. In many cases, stall speed is too close to actual VMC, so this maneuver should be done with the “rudder block” method of demonstrating VMC. The effect is the same and the learning the same. The comment about allowing VMC to continue, I do not agree with. You are already tickling the dragons tail by allowing the aircraft to approach stall speed and if you get the stall, the aircraft is most likely to spin in the direction of the good engine and will likely go flat, which is the deadly combination you do not want to see.
I agree the rudder block method should be used at VSSE by the instructor or DPE
I like the Dragon analogy. Another way to think about it is holding a two headed tiger by the tail.

Yes. You are correct. Feathered propeller is a failed VMC demonstration. Baron POH below SIMULATED ONE ENGINE INOPERATIVE ZERO THRUST (Simulated Feather) Use the following power setting (only on one engine at a time) to establish zero thrust. Use of this power setting avoids the difficulties of restarting an engine and preserves the availability of engine power. The following procedure should be accomplished by alternating small reductions of propeller and then throttle, until the desired setting has been reached. 1. Propeller Lever - RETARD TO FEATHER DETENT 2. Throttle Lever - SET 12 in. Hg MANIFOLD PRESSURE NOTE This setting will approximate Zero Thrust using recommended One-Engine Inoperative Climb speeds.

I would suggest a G500 Txi, two GI 275 as standby, a GFC 600 AP, a GTN 750, a GTN 650, a new TX with traffic awareness, and two new IO 550, and your plane will not only last for the next 50 years, but also be a high-end GA airplane! I know, this investment will be around 350.000 $, but consider the price of a used DA42 and compare the value! The Baron will be cheaper and better!

Yes, I agree with you. Beech Baron is unsurpassed in the light twin category and has stood the test of time being in production for 60 years. Very few aircraft have been in production for 60 years. It is certainly the pinnacle of piston general aviation aircraft for those reasons I had no doubt it would meet the mission.

Have you tried the Boost settings in the custom profiles A and B? If not it makes a world of difference.
Yes I use custom power settings sometimes when riding with non electric friends.
@@cabbynate Its still a lot if work below 75rpm cadence. On a new Shimano you can ride along at 50-60 rpm up a decent grade and keep up a 13-15 mph pace. No way can you do that relaxed pace on a RockyMtn.
@@bstevens7647 I agree. Heck even my old E8000 was easier on me with a lower cadence. I will say in boost the overrun of the Shimano motor was a bit sketchy on steep climbs or twisty trails. The Rocky Mountain Powerplay has almost no overrun anywhere in its power settings so I can ride it in Ludacris mode all day without worry of it pushing me off a trail. The all have pro's and con's. I would like to have bikes with both motors but that's not in the budget.
@@cabbynate when you get a chance to ride an ep801 with the latest 5.3.2 update, with the overrun turned all the way up you will love it. Its way better than the RockyMtn It doesnt let the motor bog, it just keeps working , and not just when you stop pedaling, it makes short real steep sections a lot easier and safer. And since it isnt RockyMtn's battery system it wont burn your house down. My friends that have not got rid of their RockyMtn bikes wont store them inside anymore after helping me clean up the fire damage that totaled my 1200 ft garage.

If ever you find yourself back at the Ottumwa IA airport, take a short walk to the NAS Ottumwa Museum (couple hundred yards). They have a 1/5th scale Stearman that is very scale. rib stitching, pinking tape. scale stencils that are actually painted on. the stick moves the control surfaces as do the rudder pedals and the fuselage is made 100% scale tube by tube. It used to be in the terminal, but they moved it to the museum earlier this year. I know the guy who built it.
