Fishing Catalina Island New Year's Day 2025
We did a day trip to Catalina to target White Seabass. It was dark, wet and foggy when we left Dana Point Harbor but once we got out behind the island it was sunny and calm. A beautiful day on the water that reminds you how great it can be to get out and do what you love to do on a day like this. We caught live squid by snagging them and using them for bait. We didn't catch any White Seabass but we caught Sand Bass, Calico Bass and Halibut. A great day on the water.

Supertanker White Seabass

We headed out early on a beautiful morning to look for Yellowtail and White Seabass. Our expectations weren't super high but we knew it would be fun to get out early in the season and spend some time on the water. After making some nice Mackerel our Captain, Pat, found a school of White Seabass and Chris and I dropped down on them. No luck. We proceeded to repeat this process and Chris got a bi...
Cherry El Nino Marlin Tournament 2023
Переглядів 254Рік тому
Dana Angling Club runs this tournament each year as a way to incentivize new members or any member who has not yet caught a Marlin since joining the club to get out and fish on a member boat. The boat gets extra tournament points if their new angler catches a Marlin. So, there is incentive to invite new members onto member boats which overall helps promote club camaraderie. This year I didn't h...
Catching Marlin in San Jose Del Cabo
Переглядів 591Рік тому
A group of us traveled to San Jose del Cabo to fish with Geoff Hersch on his 48' Riviera, "Hooked." We targeted Marlin and had a great time. We pulled dredges, teasers, Blue Marlin lures and Ballyhoo. We caught 14 Striped Marlin in 3 days after raising a total of 40 and having 39 bites. Our catch rate wasn't the best but that's how it goes sometimes. We released all of our Marlin and overall I ...
How To Snag Squid
Переглядів 216Рік тому
This is a method we use off Southern California to catch market Squid we plan to use for bait. There is another method to catch larger volumes of squid that involves going out a night and putting out a bright light that causes the squid to float and you can crowd it with a big net and braille it into your bait tank. However, if you find the right conditions, like in this video, you can snag up ...
Deep Drop Swordfish

I went out on my friend, Chris Bailey's, 21 Parker to deep drop for Swordfish. We have both been trying to catch one for the last several years. I have lost one and he has lost 2 fish. This was the day he caught his first one and I had the honor of driving the boat and gaffing the fish. We fished one rod on the bouy and one straight off the rod tip. I saw the bouy lay over and yelled that he wa...

This is a video that I took last year and had issues trying to edit it so I forgot about it until now. It was the Dana Angling Club Tuna Tournament from July 2021. We found foamers between the 267 and 209 and cast poppers and surface lures at them but didnt' get bites. We also put fly line mackerel baits back behind the boat as we positioned up swell of the foamers and this is how we ended up g...
Bluefin Tuna off San Diego

We made a trip from Dana Point down to San Diego earlier this season arriving about 3 am. We found the huge fleet of boats and metered around until we found a nice school. We went 2 for 4 throughout the morning. We had one sinker rig bite on a mackerel and 3 flyline sardine bites. Then, we chased schools of Bluefin around on our way back to Dana Point in the afternoon.

My friend, Chris and I headed out to La Jolla to try and catch Yellowtail to kick off our Dana Angling Club "All Species" tournament. This means any species can be entered (except Sharks) and heaviest fish wins over a 2-weekend period. Chris caught and released 2 of these sharks. I'm not sure what kind they are so if you know chime in and let me know your thoughts.

We made the trip accross on Friday late afternoon and stayed through Sunday afternoon. The wind was up in the cove and the Sea Lions were plentiful. We were able to snag squid the first night but it wouldn't float. We caught a nice variety of fish: Kelp Bass, Bonito, Sheepshead, Rockfish and 3 nice Yellowtail (2 at 30# and one at 23#). We caught them on surface iron, yo yo iron and sardine. A f...
Bluefin Tuna at Cortez Bank

We left Friday night and headed out to the Cortez Bank where the Bluefin fishing had been really good for about a week. We baited up with Sardines and Mackerel and frozen Flying Fish. We found 2 spots of foaming Bluefin between San Clemente Island and the Eastern side of the Tanner Bank but couldn't get close enough to fish them. Once we got out to the Cortez we started marking fish and set out...

We left Dana Point Harbor at 10:30 pm Friday night and headed out to some areas below and outside SCI. Found small YFT and school size BFT but couldn't get a bit. Poppers, iron, stick baits, live sardine and mackerel; nothing worked. We kept moving NW and found some sporadic larger BFT that were swirling on the surface. We set up a drift for 2 hours and finally got a bite on a balloon rig with ...

Catching Yellowtail and Bonito

We did an early season trip offshore to scout around to see if we could find any Blue Fin Tuna. We didn't find any but came across multiple schools of large Bonita and some kelp paddies holding small Yellowtail. We had fun catching them on live sardines and surface irons. We kept a few fish and let the rest go. Overall, a great early season day on the water.

Can you find squid inshore anywhere in NC? I recall seeing all kinds of eyes in the water at the Frisco Woods campgrounds at night but think they were all shrimp.
I don’t know NC at all, but I hear it is a rich fishing area. Squid exists in the Atlantic so who knows? 😀
A 200,000 rig and he's saving money by using the canned mackerel sparingly
Good point, but old habits die hard ;)
Good catch. Does that fish go to the auction or do they get sold local?
