Solitaire: Grandfather Clock Tutorial
This looks easy
I like the look of this to play in a small space like a tray - maybe even a flight tray but that could be too small???
Gosh this looks fiendish with hidden (face down) cards and runs blocked by later deals of 10 cards. But it is attractive to me - i do fancy playing a game with 2 sorts of sequences - natural (all cards move) and standard (top card only moves). Bet the game could be made more winnable by having fewer hidden (or face down) cards. I might experiment...
Does anyone know if there's a ranking for degree of difficulty of a tableau? Like Sudoko, for example, has Easy, Med, Hard, Fiendish rankings? Such a system sure could be devised.... a We know the Aces (and other low cards) being in "lower" rows is helpful etc etc. b. I can see a difficulty being calculated numerically - as cards have numerical value (rank) and rows could be numbered 1-7 easily....
Can increase chances of winning by creating a pack to play with of 8 ranks only. That means every rank has an even number (4) of cards present Or select 14 pairs of cards of the same rank. That means every rank included has an even number (2 or 4) of cards present
I like the 8-rank variety idea. Cool!
Good stuff. Good one to teach the kids 👏👍
TY. Interesting. Reminds me of Aces Up in terms of the tableau set up. And of Klondike in terms of game play with tableau, waste pile and the stockpile of face down cards.
Wow! Congratulations on fitting that in and meeting the challenge of producing a good vid tutorial of such a huge game. I must admit I'm not ready to try that one yet 😂
This is the first time i have seen any 2 pack game. I wonder which of the 2 pack games you've done tutorials for is the most winnable? Btw. I like Frog as you present because even if you lose the whole game you've still completed some Foundations
Glad you liked it! Check out my "2-Pack" Playlist for all the2-pack games. And thanks again for the note!
Confession. As a way in to playing this i made winning easier in two ways... 1. Setting the foundation in position when dealing (like is done in Penguin*) 2. Dealing 9 columns rather than 8. This gives more accessible cards and fewer inaccessible * only in FreeCell the foundation is always the Ace)
I won that game. So moved onto an 8 column game with only one "cheat" (Aces out). And won that second game. Am I ready for the full game??? 😂😂😂
Yeah, you are!!
Tremendous. This looks a real teaser of a strategy game to exercise the grey matter. A great counterpoint to say the default solitaire: Klondike. Thanks; and love it!
Love this. It feels like Klondike in that winning depends more on luck (how the cards deal) than skill (beyond basic spotting of moves which experienced players pretty much fully master). Is that how others see it?
This game feels like a good path to FreeCell, which I have seen but not played. This game seems to have much in common with FreeCell, specifically 1. manoeuvring visible cards individually, 2. using "free areas - cells or columns strategically to do that manoeuvring. Indeed the FreeCell rule that you can move blocks of cards 1 bigger in total than the number of free cells applies to free columns in this game even if not formally stated in the vid...
FreeCell is excellent. Check out my tutorial on it, and for a fun variation try penguin! ua-cam.com/video/5H-6KGfD90g/v-deo.html
I'm really taken with this game. The early moves are a great brain teaser as they need to be smart and after that, if they are dine right, its faster and easier to complete a win. Does anyone have a sense of how much you win (with experienced/ good play)? I'm fairly confident it is not every time. It feels like you win more often than you lose from a bit of playing... perhaps 2 out of 3 games ???
I think you're right. With practice I think I can win about 2 out of 3. It's a fun mental exercise! Glad you like it.
Love this! Will call it "Developers Pyramid" and teach the kids how to play. I'll keep idiot out of the name - I don't want them to see losing as idiotic. Its just about learning and having fun; not about judgement and labelling. Especially with the kids
@@duncanellis4632 Great call. This game I found in a booklet from the 30’s. Nowadays we can retire the term. Enjoy! Let me know if the kiddos like it.
@@SolitaireWithTheCardGuy Haha, yes. If only that term (mindset) had stayed in the 30s! It is alive and well... but doesn't need passing on to my kids or by me to anyone lol. In similar vein, I'd look at card pack design. I'd have 2 Jacks and 2 Janets not 4 Jacks etc. Girls just as much as boys, i mean. The Jacks being what matters date back to priorities/ thinking that is now very dated - in the Western world at least Personally I'm getting Gold, Silver, Bronze packs for the kids instead of King, Queen, Jack I think. Keep King > Queen out of it as that's not valid any more
Wow! This is great. Very happy to add it to my portfolio. Bit of a teaser getting the unwinds right 😮😂😊
@@duncanellis4632 Ah! No one said it was gonna be easy! Glad you liked it. Thx for the notes.
Great game. The win frequency can be adjusted. A couple of comments expressed frustration at how rare wins were. I found similar! But by having one row (not two) of face down cards it gets easier. Also by having nine (not seven) columns it gets even easier still. I won about 2/5 games with those two changes*. Much more satisfying to me personally. I hope that helps others... * a trial of 20 games with the two adjustments gave me 8 wins (or 2/5 more simply expressed). Whereas i reckon i won no more than 1 in say 25 with the set up exactly as video (altho i wasn't keeping count at that stage!)
Great vid and channel. Thanks
What a great name for a game 👏👏👏
@@duncanellis4632 Why thank you!
Is there another name for this game? When I Google Idiots Delight most of the other versions are quite different. Just trying to find more info. Thanks!
@@Serenitynow1027 Thanks for writing! I bet this version is tough to find as I found it in a card playing book published in the 1930’s. Maybe it fell out of favor! Still fun though …
@@Serenitynow1027 BTW love the Seinfeld reference
@@SolitaireWithTheCardGuy lol thanks!
By far I have tried Idiot's Delight, Klondike, Little Spider, Spider Solitaire, Calculation, Monte Carlo, Accordion and FreeCell! FreeCell has been my absolute favourite out of those! I've won 3 games so far, they all took me 20-25 mins in average. An absolute good time killer! Most importantly, starting is the hardest part with this game, in fact 1 of those 3 games had the aces on the near lowest cards! A note to Card Guy: You should lower or fade the volume of the SFX you play in some of those videos. Because they are a bit loud, they sound a bit out of place. Otherwise, it's a nice addition in such a step-by-step guide! In the accordion one the sfx each time you said "accordion" left me die of laughter. I did recently try solitaire games because I learnt how to play "I Doubt That!" with my friends and I felt I could turn my uno into a 52-deck and it does work really well. Your vids are really well done, I learnt all of the aforementioned games thx to your channel! Keep going! And don't forget my suggestion!
@@ChrisVideosGreek Thank you for that note!! You are more than welcome.
Yeah. Agreed. FreeCell is my favourite too. But I like Idiot's Delight and Aces Up. The latter only with modified (easier) tableau
While I did win this one first try, I suggest that, not only should this be played in a 5x5 tableau (so that you can use the deck a bit more on your advantage) but to also have the ability to shuffle the entire tableau (in this case riffle the cards 7 times to maximize the randomization) IF there are still remaining cards on the deck (i did need to do this once and it helped me win).
Dang! I put $10 on blue to win!
@@sousasrock2140 Better luck next time!
Hello card guy, I really enjoy your videos and your way of explaining. But I have got to ask. How do you find all of these card games. Do you have a book or website or something or do you just make them up yourself?
I've only made up one game: Matriarchy. ua-cam.com/video/Q5QVfQOhjtw/v-deo.html The others I find in card playing books and a lot on line. There are so many fun games. Plenty to learn. Thank you for the note!
Is there ever a time you can lose the game? It seems not, to me.
Actually yes. Winning is no guaranty!
This is a great tutorial! TY

Nice to see the red and blue decks working so nicely together!
@@stevewood787 You see? It can be done!
Free the Beak!
@@matthewneumann1814 It’s a must!
Looks like a fun game. Similar to Freecell but with slight nuances. I'll have to give this one a go sometime.
@@feelzthedon994 Yeah please do. A lot like FreeCell so it should feel familiar. Have fun!
Well, look who waddled back in here!
I was tought a different game with 1 pack and my grandma called it napoleons tomb
@@howtodosht8314 A one pack version? Nice.
No Table? Now that's notable ...
Challenging!
This game is awesome...ty 🕊
Forgotten how fun this one is!
😂😂😮
First time playing this and I got 15 piles. I was doing so good and then it just started going in an AB pattern of spades and clubs Edit: my second time playing and I only got three piles
Only three? Very nice!!
I saw another video here about the first game. In that one, if you have a flush (all four cards of the same suite) you discard the four. I like this option as it speeds the game up.
@@jasonm673 Agreed. Dropping all 4 at once helps a ton.
Good afternoon 😊
I always find it interesting how this video of this game gets more views than some of the other videos lol
Best game😊
@@ericcodina8192 One of my go to’s. Always challenging and mathematically nearly always solvable!!
Love the "unwind!"
It's the best.
Hey card guy, i want a game with 2 decks that is short, fun and a bit complicated.
@@Nate_Gaming47 Excellent suggestion. I have a 1 pack game in the works now, but why not a 2 packer next!!
For now, give this one a try. Fun to-lay and addictive! ua-cam.com/video/bIJCfHo93Kw/v-deo.html
One question: A player can go sour and gimlet at the same time. The last discard makes a sour and a gimlet in the hand. In this case, we count points for the sour and for the gimlet. It is correct?
I believe that is correct. If the last card makes a sour and a gimlet I would agree to score both.
At 13:54 the last card should have been discarded. Am I correct?
Actually you may be right. If I had discarded that nine it would have added points to the opponent. Good catch!
there are so many versions of solitaire so maybe those are two different ones. I am trying to remember the at least four ways I learned as a child. 🥴
I learned this one as a child too. Great way to learn simple addition!
one way I learned in my youth was to lay down eight cards face up...what we did after that I don't remember but I want to teach grandkids ...help please!
Perfect game for grandkids. I learned it at a young age too because it's a super way to practice simple addition. Have fun!
