Snowblowing Tips & Tricks - Dealing with Heavy Wet Snow & Slush
I got a number of comments on a previous video about blowing slush. I try not to blow slush. Instead I’ll use a 4-wheeler with a plow blade or a skid steer to clear it. But, if you only have a blower, it can be a real challenge and very frustrating.
In this video I’ve got wet, heavy snow underlain with standing water. It rained all day then snowed overnight. Conditions like this are not great for a snowblower. Here are some tips on how to deal with those conditions.

I bought this full kit in March and have ridden in snow, rocks, sand, paved streets, boggy terrain, etc. It’s a really great upgrade if you ride off-road a lot. The main downsides are it has self steer on asphalt and gravel roads and you can’t remove the front wheel without first unbolting the brake disc. Overall I really like how the kit works.

    If you were to take this XR150 to higher elevation, 4,000-6500 ft, for 1-3 days and ride it around would you leave the carburetor alone, or would you ride with it choked slightly to compensate for the thinner air at the higher altitude?

    • @thatalaskaguy
      @thatalaskaguy 7 днів тому

      Oh, you’ve got it backwards and I’d leave it alone. The air is less dense as you go up in altitude so the lean, emissions regulated jetting will be a benefit to you as it’d run better. The higher altitude will have the carb running richer (less air for the fixed amount of fuel) and won’t be running as lean. Plus a 4-stroke is much less finicky about altitude changes compared to a carb’d 2-stroke. It’ll probably start and warm up faster at altitude unless where you’re going is colder than where you live.

      Only briefly for one day in the spring riding on top of snow. I then installed the front triple clamps and tire and rode on the snow the very next day. The full kit was superior in every way. But… if you ride a lot of pavement, gravel roads and occasionally go off-road, just the rear might be all you want/need? The ATV tire handles differently on pavement and gravel. The stock front tire handles night and day better in those circumstances. I have no regrets about running the full kit, but a guy just needs to decide what aspect he prioritizes… off-road or on road and gravel roads?

      @@stevereason6931 I’m at sea level. I’d guess this bike would be like all the other modern carb’d 4-stroke bikes and be jetted lean. The bike should run better and better the higher up in altitude you go. In the video the highest elevation I hit was only 600’-700’.

      I was wanting a 1332 for two winters but with the supply chain crap I couldn’t get one in town. So frustrating that they didn’t try harder to bring them into town while the lower 48 had no snow last winter. I’m still irritated about that. 😆 I’ve tried and used everything over the years. Silicon, WD-40, liquid wrench, PAM, car wax, ski wax and none has worked as well as canola oil. I like that the canola oil is the cheapest and biodegradable.

    They made the pogo stick suspension mountain lite thru '98. They were most common from about '93 thru 95. I had two out in Montana. One was a mint bone stock '93, the other was a modded '91. I remember all the hype about the ‘97 700 RMK. I had a ‘96 Summit 670 which was a better sled, but back then Polaris was the #1 seller and Ski-doo might still have been #4 in sales. @@thatalaskaguy Yes, Yamaha had a couple of overlap years between pogo and trailing arm machines. Also, dont be fooled the the trailing arm Phazer 500.....its motor is somewhat similar, but not the same as the 485 pogo era engine.....its less reliable. The early non powervalve 700 RMK was easily made into a beast in its day. Tons of aftermarket came on line quickly when it hit western slopes. Dig up old sno west articles. I saw bunches of mod 700's all the time.......then came the edge chassis 800 RMK and that changed everything again ! The mid 90's Phazer Mountain lite with its 136 track and light weight was a great sled in its day. Some modded em with paddle tracks, pipes, powder ski's, clutching and flatslides. You could get another 15 HP with just simple bolt on's and more if you knew how to do porting right. Yamaha had mountain performance advice right in the factory service manuals even. Yes, the ski's on Phazer II's and mountain lites are bigger than original 1st gen Phazer ski's I still have a '96 Venture 485 with the western 136 track. @@chuckkelley5894 Ahhh… I misunderstood your question. As far as I know you have to add the kit to a TW200. Yamaha doesn’t sell the bike this way. I really like the ATV tires but they aren’t for everyone. I only used the paved roads to get to the trails. But just keep your WR for highway use and enjoy the TW for off-road as it’s super capable and fun with ATV tires.

    These Panthers were fairly reliable. Just a good sled. Not a racer. Just a good sled. The plastic needed some TLC to last. The Suzuki engines were good. 41hp for the single carb 440 fan cooled. This one is a nice survivor.

      Thanks hope he keeps it. Good used Panthers are harder to come by each year. Cat offered a Tach and a head temp gauge as options to fill the stickered spots in the dash. Memory says they were about 50 bucks each. The little black tool box under the hood was stock. Cheap trick to help them last was lining it with thin foam to keep the tools from knocking a hole in it, or using a tool baggy. I used to wipe mine lightly with Armor All to fight dry rot. The Panther was the two up sled that year and the Pantera came with the cushy single seat and seven more hp from the 500cc FC single carb single tuner pipe it had. (48hp). It appears someone has updated this Panther with the Comet clutch from aftermarket. That was a common upgrade. The stock Cat clutch was the hex drive that a lot of people grew tired of fixing every season. A 102 C will last for years with less than 50 hp going through it. This is my era of snowmobiling. I’m currently parts hunting to restore a 1972 Cheetah that was sold out of my Dads dealership. Stay safe….

      @@glenmallory9982 Thanks for providing more info about the sled and their history. Great idea about putting armor all on the plastic box. I’m seeing more and more issues with plastic on older machines. I’m still have trouble wrapping my head around that 1985 was 40 years ago. 😆 It’s really cool to read about your appreciation for these older machines. I’m now to the point I hate seeing guys go and destroy old sleds from the 90’s just to get views. I’m really partial to 80’s and 90’s Polaris Indy’s. I’d like to get a springer TX or TX-C but those aren’t very common up here. My brother likes collecting older sleds like this and enjoy them for what they are. They are really enjoyable to go putt around on.

    A driveway snow blowing tip that works well for me is to start at one end of the driveway, but in the MIDDLE (not all the way over to one side (like you would with a lawn mower)). That way I can point the discharge chute outward (over the lawn in my case) and then I make a clear row to the other end then I just turn the snow blower and head back to the other end, but overlapping by a couple of inches, the swath I just created. The benefit of this pattern allows me to do the entire driveway without hand cranking the chute direction at all between each pass. This pattern keeps widening the middle until the driveway is fully cleared. Chute remains in the same configuration and direction for the entire run. If you can, give it a try next time.
