13 JUNE 1799, IN THE SONG OF THE SANFEDISTS THE POPULAR REVOLT AGAINST THE JACOBIAN TERROR IN SOUTHERN ITALY It is a verse of the Song of the Sanfedisti, a popular song and naturally of an unknown author, just as the author of the French Carmagnola, the dance that went crazy during the terror, is unknown of the Jacobin revolution. The author or rather the authors refer to the historical episode which saw the French troops of General Championnet succumb at the Maddalena Bridge on 13 June 1799 against the Bourbon army of Cardinal Ruffo largely supported by the lazarists and the people faithful to his King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. It was the end of the short life of the Neapolitan Republic and the return to Naples of the Bourbon dynasty. A Republic born as a twin of the French one which, although animated by anxieties for freedom, brought terror among the people of the south with the force of invaders from beyond the Alps. The French were guilty of infamy and were guilty of serious episodes of savagery and cruelty. Just think of Isola del Liri where 1300 people were massacred, in Minturno between January and April 1799 2000 innocent people were barbarously massacred, so in Castellonorato, Guardiagrele, San Severo, Andria, Ceglie, Carbonara, and..., unfortunately the list of massacres is long. L’autore o meglio gli autori si riferiscono all’episodio storico che vide il 13 giugno del 1799 le truppe francesi del generale Championnet soccombere presso il Ponte della Maddalena contro l’esercito borbonico del Cardinale Ruffo largamente appoggiato dai lazzari e dal popolo fedele al suo re Ferdinando IV di Borbone. Fu la fine della breve vita della Repubblica Napoletana e il ritorno a Napoli della dinastia borbonica. Una Repubblica nata gemella di quella francese che, anche se animata da ansie di libertà, portò con la forza degli invasori d’oltralpe il terrore tra le genti del sud. I francesi si macchiarono di infamia e si resero colpevoli di gravi episodi efferatezza e di crudeltà. Basti pensare a Isola del Liri dove furono massacrate 1300 persone, a Minturno tra gennaio e aprile del 1799 furono barbaramente massacrate 2000 innocenti, così a Castellonorato, a Guardiagrele, a San Severo, a Andria, a Ceglie, a Carbonara, e…, purtroppo l’elenco di stragi è lungo. Così possono spiegarsi i versi del canto dei Sanfedisti, con la rabbia di un popolo turlupinato e vessato da chi avrebbe dovuto portare libertà e uguaglianza e invece portò lacrime e distruzione.
