Coleman Hawkins, the first person to make the tenor a convincing vehicle for jazz.
A key figure in jazz music’s evolution, Coleman Hawkins was the first person to make the tenor saxophone sound like a convincing vehicle for jazz.
Looking at the Coleman Hawkins “A Retrospective: 1929-1963 A compilation of music stretching from 1929 through 1963.
“Hawk” as he was known as created a sound that challenged how the tenor sax would be used in jazz in the 20’s and become the standard for how the tenor would forever be used.
Fellow saxophonist Lester Young, known as the "President of the Tenor
Saxophone", commented, in a 1959 interview with The Jazz Review: "As far as I'm concerned, I think Coleman Hawkins was the president, first, right? As far as myself, I think I'm the second one."
Miles Davis once said: "When I heard Hawk, I learned to play ballads."
This collection of music captured his growth as a musician, the growth of the tenor saxophone in jazz, and the recording industry’s growth in technology.
We talked a lot about how this music made us feel and the impact it had and will continue to have on us.

We picked our top albums for the Christmas season. We made the decision that it does not have to be about jazz, but it looks like we were in the jazz mod when we went though our albums/songs. We put dad on the spot, well we just never told him he was going to be on the show. More than our choices, what music helps put you in the holiday mood? This week we look at the album “Machine Gun” by the Peter Brötzmann octet. “One of the most important albums of European free jazz! A significant document of the European free-jazz underground, displaying a fearsome and raw power. The three saxophonists fire off a ceaseless round of blasting, overblown noise, built on the continuous crescendo managed by Bennink and Johansson and, as chaotic as ...

In his late period, “John Coltrane” showed an interest in the avant-garde jazz of “Ornette Coleman”, “Albert Ayler”, and “Sun Ra”. This Album “Ascension” is the product of some of that inspiration into “free jazz”. If you’re new to jazz, this album may be a little much to listen to making it hard to enjoy or even absorb. For the advanced listener this album showcases so much great talent and ab...

This week we look into the album "Speak No Evil" by Wayne Shorter. No doubt that we love the sounds of Wayne, and the compositions are written so magically. Released in June 1966 by Blue Note Records, this is the sixth album by Wayne. The music combines elements of hard bop and modal jazz, and features Shorter on tenor saxophone, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Ca...

Thelonious Sphere Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer, “Monk” is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. If that’s not enough to want to give him a listen, then maybe the fact that he is only 1 of 5 jazz musicians to make the cover of time magazine should be. He has proven his abilities as a composer, musician and jazz great. When “Monk” comes to mind his great a...

I appreciate the fact that Brotzman did what he did. It's a tough listen, but just the fact that that music was performed in the first place is pretty freakin' awesome. Brotzman passed in June of '23.

Hey Wylie, we're big fans of Kamasi and Yusef. We're still really NEW to jazz so Kamasi is still "ground breaking" for our ears. Pharoah's episode will be coming up in just a few weeks and be sure to tune in to see how we rate him! You may be surprised.

I don't think the "free jazz" genre ever came to a close. There are any number of contemporary jazz artists out there today playing and recording free jazz. I hope it never comes to a close. I also do not use the term "free jazz" to define what I believe to be "avant-garde." Some would argue that point, but I don't know that playing a more free form of jazz necessarily advanced or moved jazz forward. Your site just popped into my algorithm and I subbed. I would have loved to have this sort of dialogue with my father. Carry on.

Since our journey has kind of "forced" us to listen to free jazz, and it's not my favorite, can you give me your list of contemporary free jazz albums to put in my ear? I'd like to see how the art form has progressed over the decades. I'm always looking to expand my listening. Have you ever been to a free jazz concert? Our episode on "Art Ensemble of Chicago" we learned that sometimes it better so SEE the show than actually just listen to it. It changed my mind a little bit about AEOC.

@mattrice3991 the music is really the gift that keeps on giving like nothing else. I've been playing trumpet for 28 years now and I could go on and on about my faves, but to keep it short, fats Navarro is the top 🎺 and 🐦 is my #1 alto and Wayne #1 tenor 🎷 for me followed by in no particular, Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Red Rodney, Kenny Dorham, Freddie, Brown, Miles, Maynard Bud Powell, Monk, Sonny Rollins , Trane, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Al Mckibbon, Ron Carter, Reggie Workman, Mingus, I can on and on, but I'll spare you guys 🤣 . I once told Ron Carter that if could solely survive off of some driving ass, resonant as hell bass lines, I'd be happy not to eat food again! Everyone has their thing when it comes to soloing and mine is bass. Sure the piano, drums and guitar are great, but for me, a great bassist can take the percussion spot manipulating the bass and taking advantage of the hollow nature of the instrument. Please forgive the ramble, lol. As I said, on and on. ✌️🎺

When I first listened to Coleman's 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' I didn't really like it, and I didn't get it, but something about it made me want to listen to it again. After I listened to it again, I wanted to listen to it again. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to it now, but it has become one of my favorite jazz albums.

Jim, I get that totally. For me (and don't burn me at the stake for this) "Pulp Fiction" was like that for me. Saw it in the theater and didn't get it. After watching it over and over again it's one of my all time favs. I'll put "The Shape of Jazz to Come" in my ear this week and maybe gain an appreciation for it. The biggest reason I don't care for Free Jazz is I'm not musically trained. Because I do not know music in terms of chords, modes, consonance, dissonance etc., I cannot appreciate the musicality of Free Jazz. For me it just sounds like cacophony where everyone is playing their own thing. It's kinda similar to a lot of Contemporary Art, Contemporary Classical music, Contemporary Literature etc. It's almost like the people doing it are doing it for the in group rather than for the general audience. As an amateur I can't be bothered with most of it. Which I think is okay, because I really feel they're not producing art for the masses but connoisseurs.

    • @mattrice3991

Free Jazz is not for everyone and I wouldn't recommend it to people newly getting into jazz, as might take time to grow on you. When I first listened to Ornette Coleman, known as the father of free jazz, I was like you and thought I am being scammed. I recently went back to listening to him again and it surprised me how much I enjoyed it and now listen to it heavily, and I think Ornette is a genius. My recommendation is to go back to it and listen to it again at a later time and you might really enjoy it it.

This was an amazing trip, mentally back to Richmond IN. to the home of Starr Piano and the Gennett records. The history of recorded jazz and what we have today is so rich. Thanks for letting us know your thoughts on the album too. I think our scores reflected the same idea as you had after listening to the album.

This was a great episode. I hope more people learn the name of John Handy, although he may not have the long discography, but his impact on jazz has stood the test of time. Thanks for the link in the description for the 5 songs you should know of John Handy

When you talk about fusion and repetition in the music, it reminds me of Ed Sheeran’s style of looping. I wonder if he was influenced by fusion in Jazz music when he started looping?

Great thought, we need to look into that idea.

DIZZY was always a big band man at heart & woody's clarinet playing was most influenced by Barney Bigard.Did you guys just discover the great Zoot Sims?

We did just find out about Zoot. We have enjoyed finding all the "new" names of the jazz greats as we discover our personal love for Jazz music. Dizzy was always a big band man at heart. He had a way to bring the sound. Thanks for dropping a comment and we hope you listen for more of our conversations. We release them Wednesday mornings. D

Very cool Uncle Dave! That was great to see that memorial in Toledo to the artist this week.
