EASY GUIDE! | GPX & Aid Stations on your running watch!
A step by step guide on how I export a race GPX, add my own markers (or aid stations) and then upload to my running watch.
I find it useful breaking a long run or race down into shorter manageable sections. There are many ways to do this but using 'Plot a Route' suites me well. Hope this helps!

    Super helpful video. I believe they've just updated the GPX on the Arc site (someone in the Facebook group mentioned a new one added today) and the latest version has all the aid station markers on it already. When you open it in Plot a Route, all the directions are there already. So for the Arc, you can skip that step now, but I will definitely use these tips for future races that upload a basic GPX, thanks. See you on the start line, good luck, hope you have a cracking race!

    Out of interest how many calories are you carrying from the start? I know there's probably no food till porthleven so feels like we need a good few. Planning on taking a mixture of wraps, sweets, gels and ote bars but not sure how many to carry. The amount i worked out was about 5000 calories which sort of feels like a lot of unnecessary weight from the start. Shooting for ~400/hour for as long as i can. Aiming for 30ish so probably 6 hours or so to Porthleven

    • @CotswoldTrailRunner
      @CotswoldTrailRunner 4 дні тому

      Hi there! From the start to Porthleven I’ll carry around 1600-1800 calories (kcal) which all being well, will consist of: 4 x tailwind (800kcal) 4 x Precision chews (480kcal) 4 x Precision gels (480kcal) Then a random selection of savoury, baby food, or whatever. If I can keep that going to Lands end I’ll be happy. I have a crew so will try restock at CP1 and the. re-evaluate at Lands End (where I got sick last year!😂). Best of luck. Keep eating if you can 👍

    Could you put the collapsable bowl in a ziplock bag to save getting the your pack dirty? In any case, if it’s silicone, a rinse with some water should get everything off pretty easily.

    • @CotswoldTrailRunner
      @CotswoldTrailRunner 7 днів тому

      Yes, everything in bags to display and check then pack it all for race day the night before. However training with the packed race kit in the weeks before allows for fine tuning in adjustments and positioning of certain items so it all feels as best it can on race day. 👍

    If anything the weather down here is better than normal so no need for the extreme cold kit, it has to be very extreme for UTMB to issue that warning. Obviously bring it with you if you’re travelling more than 24hrs before the start.

  • @fionac1089

    Love a good kit video! I love my adv 12 but couldn't fit everything that I want to carry for winter events. Recently bought the Gecko 20 and it does ok but I don't think it's going to be my forever pack. It makes such a big difference if you can carry the kit you need comfortably.

    • @CotswoldTrailRunner
      @CotswoldTrailRunner 8 днів тому

      Good to know. I've only ever run up to 100 miles so the Salomon 12L has always managed. In April I'm taking on the Northern Traverse which is 300km over multiple days so will get a bigger pack for that (UD Fastpack 30L)

    • @fionac1089
      @fionac1089 8 днів тому

      I'm also doing the Northern Traverse and that was one of the main reasons I wanted a bigger pack. Unfortunately I think it might be a trial and error job to find the right one. I don't think it helps only being 5' 1", a lot of them just don't sit right on me. It's something I really want to get right as I start to take on longer/more serious events. Love the adv 12, I just wish the larger capacity packs were the same.

    Great video! One thing, I believe the wording on gloves is a little confusing but I believe it was confirmed in the Arc FB group that 2 pairs can mean 1xpair warm gloves and 1xpair waterproof gloves so you might not need all of yours to pass kit check? Also you mentioned the 3rd warm layer is down? The wording seems to stipulate synthetic insulation.

    • @CotswoldTrailRunner
      @CotswoldTrailRunner 8 днів тому

      Thanks! Yes you’re right about the 3rd layer I’m just so used to calling ‘puffy’ jackets, down jackets I forgot. The one I have is synthetic (purchased specifically)! I’ll take all the gloves and see what they say. It’s a learning curve for many it seems! Thanks for watching 👍

    • @jadesveganlife
      @jadesveganlife 8 днів тому

      Well done for fitting it all in! I’m using a 20l inov8 pack,I wouldn’t have wanted to try and get it in my Salomon 🙈 I personally think your 3rd cold weather kit layer doesn’t have to be filled too. Just a warm 3rd layer, so the top you held up as your back up option would work (and be easier to pack than the coat) the wording just says 3rd layer of a synthetic material such as primaloft or polartec, but doesn’t say it has to be filled as the mid layer does. I’m taking a jacket lined with but not filled with primaloft to fit that requirement

    • @CotswoldTrailRunner
      @CotswoldTrailRunner 8 днів тому

      Yes you are correct! I will be taking both 3rd layer options and will for sure take the lightest if required. I run very warm and only tend to need a base layer and water/windproof even in sub zero temps. Of course stopping makes everyone cold so having a solution (or change of top) is crucial. Thanks for the comment and support!

    • @martinweston8147
      @martinweston8147 8 днів тому

      Yep +1 for the gloves it was the same at UTS, under glove with over waterproof is OK, but if it is chucking it down I have my spare set of booth in my drop bag. I'll do the same with the extreme kit, if not requested I'll put it in my drop bag, as I can make my own mind up separate to UTMB, like taking extra water at UTS when they ran out :=) Other thing to remember is that the emergency 800kcal of food should not be consumed if all goes well, so just get the cheapest smallest food you like, I went for 2 x £1 flap jackets.

    I dread to think how much I've spent on the arc between everything. New coats, 2 gilets (first probably wouldnt have met kit), bowls etc. Most of it will be used in general training and i probably should have had it before anyway but christ have i put some money into it I personally have a small bag in each front pocket, left side with bodyglide, foot cream, tablets. Right side with gloves, hat, buff. Food in the side compartments, and then 2 big bags in my zipped bit full of everything else. Very similar story here. I'm in for the Arc 100, also just turned 45 a few weeks ago, pulled a muscle at the start of November and only back to any real training just before new year. Should be interesting! See you out there and good luck.

      Thanks and best of luck to you! Enjoy the adventure and experience! Have you done the Arc before? It's a great test of character! 😂

      I've run the 50 and crewed the 100, plus lucky enough that I live in Cornwall so the course is on my home trails. Really love sharing the trail and showing off the beautiful running with so many people from around the country (and world). I'll come say hi if I see you during the event.

      @ This year I’m getting out of my comfort zone of 55km -60km and going for 100km plus distances, first one in April 120km. Excited and nervous working through Achilles tendon issues.

    Just sprained my ankle yesterday at bassets cove between Porthleven and Penzance. Managed to be ok and make it to porthcurno where the car was parked. Fingers crossed it will be fine before the start of the 100 in 3 weeks 🤞. Getting conflicting info as to whether to ice and rest or heat and keep it mobile. Luckily it’s not bad enough where by I can’t walk on it but it’s pretty swollen and bruised now on the outside of the ankle

      Unlucky! Hope all is going well with recovery? I went to a physio straight away and they said to keep it moving (exercises) and walk on it until it feels ok. She did mention (for me) that the bone begins to fuse together after 6-8 weeks which is when I returned to running again, but the stretching and strengthening exercises in my videos worked well to. Best of luck, see you there!
