    The problem these guys are having talking about the Ford Edsel is the reason why Henry Ford come out with yet so it wasn't to compete with any money the Ford Edsel was designed in memory of his son that died who had the name of Edsel which is what Henry Ford stated back in the '60s when I own my 58 Edsel

  • @williambodine4105
    @williambodine4105 2 роки тому

    The main reason Ford developed the Edsel was because when an existing Ford customer wanted to move up to a medium price car, 75% of the time they bought a GM B-O-P instead of a Mercury. GM had 5 divisions, Chrysler had 5 divisions, Ford thought they needed at least 4 to compete.

    Henry Ford was quite the visionary! Amazing! I just wish that the George Pullman train car factory was in shape like this. A fire destroyed most of the factory. They managed to restore a relatively small portion of the property and make it into a museum and historical landmark 🚂 There’s still a Ford manufacturing plant in Chicago. Providing jobs for Chicagoans and the surrounding communities.🚗🚘

    When my grandfather was alive he could take an engine apart and put it together like nobody’s business, and back in the twenties he was approached by Packard to be a test driver, quite an opportunity back in the day but alas he declined the offer because how many times would you have an opportunity to work for a prestige car company back during the depression. I’d jump at the chance but that’s why I’m such a car enthusiast

    I spent my working life as a body tech, beginning in the 60's, retiring in 2006. I never saw a Pinto burned up from a rear hit, even in a wrecking yard. The real Pinto fire problem was the press in carb fitting. I've seen lots of those. My solution was to tap the carb body to 1/8" pipe an use a screw in fitting.

    Despite their reputation as a laughable flop, 1958 Edsels weren’t *much* worse than their competitors. Several factors doomed Ford’s new product from the start: A surprise economic recession began in late Summer 1957 that sharply reduced demand for new cars - especially gas-guzzlers like the Edsel big series.Edsel prices were considered high. A typical fully-loaded Citation, for example, cost 99% of the average American household’s yearly income! Also, Edsel debuted in the same week most car dealers began discounting their leftover 1957 inventory. Edsel’s ambitious product mix -- 18 models in four series -- confused the public as to how Edsel compared with other brands. Many were unsure whether the Edsel really represented a “step up” from their current ride. There were notorious quality issues early on: Workers’ hourly quotas for assembling other cars were not reduced once responsibility for the Edsel was added. Men naturally resented having to build Edsels “for free” -- thus some assembly was, um, casual. Edsel assembly required different tools and access to different parts bins than did Ford/Mercury production; mistakes were made. It was rumored that if Edsel succeeded, it would put the squeeze on Ford/Mercury sales and cost some assemblers their jobs! Edsel’s quality inspectors could not watch cars being built - only check them afterward. Also, a whole day’s production was approved for shipment if the *average* quality of all the Edsels a plant made that day fell within range. This meant that some seriously deficient cars got sent to dealers along with the good ones! No car could live up to the relentless drumbeat of hype to which Edsel’s ad agency had subjected the public for a full year prior to roll-out. Finally, Ford executive Robert McNamara - later “kicked upstairs” to Secretary of Defense - thought small cars were the wave of Ford's future and he schemed to eliminate the Edsel Division even before it had made its first sale!

    There is something that I haven't quite got straight in my mind has Anyone backed up one year and Taken good look at the mercury's that were built between 1957 and1960. Where did the vessel Fit into the Ford line up. All the Edsel was was that the jr series ranger a and pacer were built off aford chassis and body the senior Cars the corsair and the citation were built off the mercury's body A nd chassis it's interesting to note That even mercury's weren't selling in this down economy. But the edsel was dropped. Ford came along with the falcon which was very successful and a short time later Lincoln mercury dealers got a slightly larger comet and the standard mercury for 1961 went back to being aloft more Ford based!

    • @michaelweizer7794

      The Edsel was supposed to fit in between the Ford and the Mercury. As for the differences between the smaller and bigger Edsel's. That had to do with a shorter vs smaller wheelbase chassis and not the body. The Ford chassis had the smaller wheelbase where the Mercury had the longer one. Wheelbase length was a common differentiator between many ford's and Mercurys. For example, the Mustang and Cougar were essentially the same chassis, but the Cougar in addition to different sheet metal and interior also had a longer wheelbase. From 1970 to 1978, the LTD, Marquis and Continental all ran on the same chassis with 3 different wheelbase lengths. Since longer wheelbases tend to give a smoother ride, Ford would assign them to the higher car line.

    The Edsel's most important reason for failure: over-promotion. Ford promised for years that it would be the most amazing car anyone had ever seen, with all-new features never before offered in an automobile. But once people got a look at it, they realized it was just another big car, and the features were merely gimmicks. One former Edsel dealer said it best: "we had customers coming into the showroom that were expecting to see a nuclear-powered car that could fly. Obviously, it failed to meet their high expectations."

    • @kennethsouthard6042

      The amount of money spent on the Edsel launch had to be daunting. In addition to several short films, there was even a TV special starring Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, and Bing Crosby along with an appearance by Bob Hope.
