Today, I test Winchester Super X 1oz rifled foster hollowpoint slugs in a single shot smooth bore shotgun. Our average velocity was 1,648 FPS and 2,638 FPE at the muzzle. with a 50 yard G1 calculated BC of 0.1 we achieve 1,499fps @ 25yds and 2,184 FPE. At 50yards we get 1,366fps and 1,814 FPE. Plenty to take on northern medium to large game.

Today we are testing .51 cal airgun slugs at 100 yds. These are shot out of an Umarex Hammer at 861 fps. Slug weight is 388gr and have 638 FPE at the muzzle. Gelatin is calibrated at 3.3" with a 590fps bb. Slug BC is 0.14 G1 .

Today we test which is better, 9mm or 45 acp? The unedited version ran 4.5 hours and I was able to trim that down to just over 1 hour. Sure you might have missed some stuff but at the end of the day, the answer is you. Which are you more comfortable with and which you shoot better. I got my grandpa in this video to expand the skill set and show a different age level.

Thanks for your insight. I can agree that at first glance, it can look underwhelming. One must consider that the shotgun slug has 2.9x the mass of a standard 150gr 30 cal projectile, while having 5.6x the surface area. This leads to 0.52x sectional density. This is just 1 reason to the reduced penetration because it increases the amount of energy distributed per inch of penetration. While modern expanding hunting bullets can deliver similar permanent wound size (by using speed) they fall short in delivering that energy as efficiently as the foster slug. As well as the increased surface area leading to a much larger entrance hole enhancing the rate at which blood pressure will be lost. The pros and cons are up to you but with proper shot placement both are undoubtedly effective.

@ixb1 That's what I thought, but it showed consistent through multiple firings for me. It's probably contributed to my environmental variables. Temp: 60°F, Humidity: 47%, Local Pressure: 29.15"Hg. As well as where it falls in the transonic range being mach .87, in a relatively high drag speed until it slows below 900 fps. But that's just my thought on why it's so low. BC might be much higher in the 1500+ range since. I plan to do future tests with higher charge weights

If we look at BC average over 75 yards, it falls into what I believed was happening. A decrease up to the sound barrier and then the BC would increase again, although when I started to compile the individual 25-yard BC's I saw something oddly familiar with that of air gun pellets. Extreme BC inconsistency in the 900 to the low 1,200 fps range, even for shots that are sub 5 ft/s apart. This is something very similar to what diablo pellets do when the pellet skirt no longer acts as a mean of stabilization and wobbles out of the supersonic vacuum around the head of the pellet, creating a moment of increased drag before being pushed back into the vacuum. The 75-yard averages don't show this because enough time was given to restabilize to projectible, or the projectile fell out of the transonic zone. But that's just my thought with such a limited number of data points. Once the bullet gets over 1,250fps the BC becomes consistent once again slowly increasing the faster it moves, probably due to allowing enough time to allow the bullet to stabilize on its own while still in the supersonic range before some parts experience transonic waves.
The material in the hollow point isn’t weird 😂 Hornady has been doing it for at least 10 years. As to it functioning as advertised? Don’t know
@1776goodfight I didn't have the right words to describe the texture. It's slightly gummy like glue that's not fully set. I guess Hornady FTX is their brand. It works great at keeping the cavity clear so far in the Gold dots
Really need to make sure your barrel is cleaned down to bare metal before you use copper monolithic bullets. If you've shot cup and core or similar before you shoot all coppers, it's not going to group well. It won't be a fair assessment of what copper bullets are capable of. Thanks for the video. Yeah, those aren't cheap bullets.
@mimicocto8 I believe your 100% right. This was my first time ever trying monolithic, although it was kind of interesting to see how drastic a little bit of fouling was to the loads. Almost 100 fps slower and erratic, whereas traditional lead cores typically speed up and become more consistent with a light foul (at least in these cheaper barrels). I'll have to revist these in the future with a spotless bore and stretch them out a little farther
@@raysbudgetslowmo If you decide to reload monolithics, IF, be sure to be careful with the pressures. They will increase in pressure a bit more than a regular copper/lead bullet. Good stuff on game though. Keep it up!
@mimicocto8 Thank you, and thank you for the warning, I'm well aware of the pressure increase in mono's. Initial pressure of 10,000 psi compared to around 2,600 psi for standard jacketed bullets. As well as needing to be seated deeper into the case for the same C.O.A.L compared to lead equivalents. I ran some load simulations, and it's VERY easy to make an 85,000+ psi pipe bomb if you're not careful with powder selection/charge consistency.
How much FPE are you getting truly?....and I am thinking about that .22 cal hatsan bt65... Lastly, what is your thoughts on the new hatsan sniper long .22 cal?.... do you think if hammer spring maxed it will actually get over 80 fpe???
@lamardaniels6625 @lamardaniels6625 while I don't have the bt65 in .22 cal, I do have it in .177 cal. It slings 13.4gr jsb exact monsters at an avg of 1,007fps for 30 ft/lbs with stock hammer tension, which had to be turned down for accuracy. The .35 cal puts out 85-90 ft/lbs with pellets. That's 82gr around 690-700fps at max hammer tension. I will say shot count is fairly limited for the sweet spot. I get 1 6 round mag within 10 ft/s ES and for my particular rifle that is at 165 bar to 140 bar . Personally I feel the 30 cal would have been a better choice as that is what the Carnivore was designed for, with the .35 being an after thought. Cheaper pellets and similar fpe. I haven't paid much attention to the Factor sniper honestly. A quick search through airgun nation shows a video in which they were getting 930fps with 25.4gr .22 pellets which is just shy of 49 fpe and they were only at half hammer tension. I can see it potentially getting 80 fpe, though you're going to be shooting 40gr slugs at 950fps or supersonic with anything lighter to get there. I don't know enough to say if a 40gr pill would fit in the mag or if it would need to be single loaded.
Should clarify, with pellets I can run 2 mags at 85 ft/lbs. With slugs it drops to 1 mag. The reduced weight and friction of the pellet allow for a slightly more forgiving shot string, though lack any significant gain in velocity and I'm not entirely sure why

That's a very valid point, and you're right. This wasn't meant to be the same hole test. See it more as a "how many shots can 1 cinderblock take before it becomes compromised" test. I waited to regain sight picture but was not holding for groups when squeezing off, as that is what I figured would be the most closely related to a real world scenario. I personally would not be worried about putting a round in the same hole, but instead as controlled as possible given the situation, put rounds on target. This is only one sample of this specific ammo. You can judge for yourself what you take is better for your own personal needs. Thank you

@ThomasJay723 Yes, sir. Air rifles in .510 really deserves more attention than given (and PA should update laws to include big bore airguns for deer). I did a test at 100 yds with hollow point slugs and saw some serious expansion.

I'm fortunate in that my Savage 99 shoots a number of the less expensive (.308 flat based 150gr) ammo accurately. And the Power Point is one (also, Federal Power Shok and Hornady Interlock, Remington Core Lokt). That being said, I lean towards the Hornady as it is bonded and is slightly more consistent velocity wise and retains 90-95% of it's weight. Regardless of velocity or performance shot placement is 90% of an ethical kill. Hit'em right and hit'em hard and you don't have to spend hours tracking.
@basshunter428 The 99 is a beautiful piece of lever rifle. I've had some experience with Remington's Core Lokt bullet and seen the work they put out, but my rifle just didn't like them. And I 100% agree that shot placement is the most crucial part of a bullets effectiveness. The new polymer tipped controlled expansion bullets show magnitudes of greater energy dump but also a potential failure point when jacket separation happens and the core explodes like a grenade. Turning a medium game bullet into a varmint bullet. Soft lead was used for 100+ years and is still just as effective now as it was then.

All that "controlled expansion" mumbo jumbo is lost on me because I have hunted long enough to know that if you smack'em with a Core Lokt, Power Shok, Power Point, or any good quality cup & core bullet of adequate caliber and weight in the "boiler room" they're go they're gonna drop right into your freezer just like thousands have for well over 100 years! All the new stuff is just trying to reinvent the wheel. Yes, I'm sure there is some merit to the claims, but not enough to justify over double the price if you can even find the stuff. If I spend for premium ammo it will be Swift A Frame or Nosler Partition. But I won't be hunting Grizzly or Polar bears any time soon, so..... 😄
Got my hands on a labradar so im here to update the BC. Temp @ 88°F, Humidity @ 33%, Local pressure @ 28.84"Hg. MV was 2532fps. At 75yds we get a G1 of 0.42. Retested with a MV of 1,839fps @100yds, we get a G1 of 0.365. Much better results than in the video, though I'm unsure how much the winter conditions played in?

The model 1100 is a beautiful shotgun. Classic wood finish and dual beads. Shotgun slugs are a lot more accurate than what most people believe/give credit for. It's just learning how to shoot them accurate. Minute of gopher with just a front bead sight at 50yds isn't too bad.

Thank you to all over at Umarex. The amount of engineering that went into creating the Hammer is incredible. As an early adopter of the Hammer in '21, I'm sure in the future there we be even more innovation into the hammer. Maybe something along the lines of "sledgehammer" will be next.
My SST story. Took a buddy to TX on his first pronghorn hunt. He bought a new Remington 700 stainless 308 and factory Hornady 150 gr SST ammo. Shot really well. Day 3 he shot his buck at 250 yards hitting it perfectly in the mid shoulder. The buck fell, then got up. Shot number 2 hit the same spot. Buck fell, got up but so stunned he didn't go anywhere. We started walking up to the buck which never moved. Shot 3 at 100 yards knocked him down. He got up again. At this point I am wondering if this is really happening. Shot 4 at 50 yards knocked him over. He stayed down. At 5 yards we got a great look at what was happening. Every SST bullet was exploding on the scapula. There was NO hair, NO meat left but the vitals were only taking a big thump, no penetration. I had never seen anything like this in decades of hunting. I was seeing what I had heard Nosler Ballistic Tips were allegedly known for even though they never failed me. Shot number 5 was at about 3 inches from the buck and BEHIND the shoulder. That was the killing shot. The only reason I bought any SST bullets was last year and for the first time ever in 6.5mm and they were ONLY to reshoot my 6.5-284 Norma brass to open the case mouth back up to fired diameter just to trim the donut inside. To me, SSTs are good for practice, plinking, or some other benign purpose but I would NEVER use them on a live animal. And yes, I made my decision based on this one experience.

That was my feeling with these in the 150gr weight class for 30-06 and 308 win. They are designed in a way that they're almost too efficient at expansion and behave like a varmit bullet, especially when connecting with whitetail shoulder bone. Although I would have thought that after 200 yards out, velocity would have decreased enough to hold together for you, I guess not. Maybe in something a lot slower like a box mag 30-30.
@@raysbudgetslowmo After witnessing what I did, I'll ONLY use them to fireform brass or practice since they are on the cheaper end and you can buy 2nds even cheaper. That SST bullet did what I heard all the nightmare stories about Nosler ballistic tips which have done nothing but perform flawlessly for me since 1990
@derekmcmurry4263 Can not blame you. I don't have any personal experience with the Nosler ballistic tips, only the SST's. I'll have to start looking into them. I keep the SST's around since they can be cheaper than standard ball FMJs, and they don't take chunks out of the gongs.
Correction at 4:28 I said there was an impact energy of 474 FPE. That should have read 525 FPE. I used 350gr instead of 388gr in the calculation. This is my bad.

Thank you. She's a big girl, alright. And an air hog at that too. Fairly accurate at around 2" groups at 100yds. I don't know why PA hasn't legalized a season for hunting with these when you can legally take a .357 mag into the field for deer.
We use silicone spray to lube power stretcher poles in flooring. You could try spraying that in the barrel and on the slugs. It lasts awhile too

If you made it to the end, yes, the 388gr HP did go faster than the 350gr solid. That is not a typo. My 350gr mold drops big at .512, and the extra diameter eats away at velocity. Sizing the slugs would have brought velocity closer to what is expected.

You should always wash pellets or slugs and Dawn and then dry them with a hair dryer and then just do a light spray on the slugs or pellets roll them in a cotton rag to make sure all the excess is off and you're ready
I have read about doing this on an old GTA post in my early airguning years, and many did agree with the practice. Though they were looking at .22 and .177 cal. I used a black powder 50/50 lube on these .51 slugs. It's certainly not the best choice in hindsight, considering BP operates at 15 to 30k psi while I'm limited to only 3k. Airgun specific lube would probably have helped. Although I did not see a loss in accuracy, just a POI change and a gummy barrel from all the unburned lube. Though cleaning was much faster with zero lead flakes in the rifling.

Well at least the first one proved Im not a bullsh-tter, I rarely get them to expand with heavy clothing barrier Im guessing if your gonna run them use a duty size weapon and not a compact, thanks for the awesome test buddy!
Yeah, this was an eye opener as I personally do carry a compact to reduce printing. I've heard about failure to expand but most of those stories came from people using hollowpoints in late 80's to early 90's. I don't really see people wearing denim vests anymore, but in PA a lot of people wear jeans year long and "heavy" coats for 4+ months out of the year. My guess is that the added velocity helps start initial expansion as the bullets still had denim strands in between the pedals. Maybe lighter/faster will work better in compacts?

Don't worry, I stopped off at my local store yesterday and saw that prices seem to vary month by month. Even at $30 they are still within the "standard" defensive pricing range. And they work just as well if not better than a lot of the quote "premium" expanding ammo

@kendtchileninjah5905 I believe those are called "Ready" or "USA Ready". I've seen them a couple of times but Hornady critical defense takes most of the shelf priority in the polymer tipped category. Never personally tried either so I can't say anything yet about them.

Damn someone noticed my shakiness. I actually do use a tripod, but I pick it up during the overview/review parts as I get a little excited and want to move the camera closer, thinking it acts the same as eyes. Next time, I'll try to just leave it be.
Lead is in itself a lube and does not need any adition.
Barrel polishing is still the best way to gain accuracy, lubing also helps
Things to consider: The 3.2" barrel provided 941 ft/s and 289 FPE with the 4.7" providing 1045 ft/s and 356 FPE. That exceeds advertised velocity of 1000 ft/s. The added 104 ft/s may play a role in consistent expansion.
Try powder coating them , works great with cast boolits
I did just order a sizing so I can powder coat them. What kind of powder coat are you using by chance? I've read/watched a little into the process, and powder selection and application vary. I'll try to test with as many applicable variables for you as possible.
I use Eastwood ford blue and squirrel grey, I would check out Elvis ammo on here, he has a ton of vids on powder coating cast boolits, though ther are ton of vids from other guys he goes way deep
Ok. I watch a little bit of him and Fortune cookie in my spare time when I feel getting expermental. The only powder I have on hand right now HF white and black. I've been able to get white to coat nicely, around 2 thou on a single coat. but black has always needed multiple passes the achieve the same thickness
Even if your tethered to the tank the air pressure is dropping consistently and I would have fired 3 more unlubed after the lubed rounds to check my velocity again for confirmation. That gun uses mad crazy air so even connected to a tank like say a 6.8 ltr the tank pressure will have dropped considerably I would imagine. Either way this is a very cool test. I have often wondered myself if there would be a difference in speed. I tried this with Slick 50 back in the day on a 30-06 and there was indeed a difference in speed with that lube. It shot almost 200 FPS faster than without the lube so the Teflon did make a difference but never tried it with an airgun. I'm not taking a chance damaging seals/O-rings with that lube. I have always been told to only use silicone with airguns so I am not putting Slick 50 lube in a 2K+ airgun. Teflon may be ok if you can isolate it to the barrel only though. Thank you.
The hammer does use a TON of air. Off of the 500cc bottle, I've found you get 2 shots equal with the third being slow. First shot @4,500psi, second @3.6k psi, and the third @2.9k psi. This is a 6.8L 4,500psi tank, though I rarely fill above 4,200psi. It just takes way too long to make up the last couple hundred pounds when I want to start shooting. I believe the loss in speed is simply that the air doesn't get hot enough or create enough pressure to fully burn up the lube im using. And instead the lube is only adding to the bore contact creating more friction than what it is capable of reducing. I can do a future retest or make a shot count string with the same slug weight to find exactly how many shots per tank fill. I'm about 99% certain it's over 10, probably closer to 14, with a full bottle. It's nice enough today I'll try to do that now.
The purpose why airgunner's are lubing projectile's come in the from of consistency between shots in FPS and Extreme Spread, which matters down range. It helps keep the barrel cleaner, and more consistent. Simply roll the lead around in a container with a thin film of silicone oil on it before loading. Almost all airgun competitors lube before shooting. Sometimes you just have to spit on it.
Interesting. I did know the H&N slugs are pre lubed, though what I could find said it was excess lube from maching that gets left on. It doesn't seem to negatively impact performance. I don't really have much experience with small bore air gun slugs in general though. Only my BT 65 in .177 needs them. My .17 and .22 maurader work great with really cheap pellets. And my .25 gauntlet is a little too expensive to consider switching to slugs when I'm in an area that allows me to use 22lr freely for a similar price per shot. Although that might just be me getting jealous at those guys with the M3 builds slapping 100+ fpe slug guns that destroy what I'm capable of with a 22lr and they make it look so easy too

Makes sense. The lube is coating barrel as it moves outward. Thus slowing slug. Kmom77 has the idea. Coat inside barrel & slugs. This should equal out friction. Results could be interesting
