Of Gods and Men The Mission Stalker
Even the most faithful Christians are on-and-off Christians if they are truthful. Believing in God is easy. Following Christ is really hard. I have not seen the film yet but when I see violence it reinforces why Christianity is the most civilizing system in human history. You can have civilization with God but civility only with Christ.
What ABOUT? .... the Last Temptation of Christ ????????
The OP talks about it briefly if you watch the full video. He says it’s crazy.
Christain or Catholic? 🤨.
Beautiful review of a beautiful film. Loving your channel, brother! (btw just after halfway through the 5 minute mark, you called the film The Sound of Freedom)
Thank you! Oops, I just made a video talking about Sound of Freedom, so I must've confused the titles. My bad!
As a Muslim, Silence is my favorite film. What blows my mind the most is that Scorsese made Silence right after The Wolf of Wall Street, going from wild debauchery to deep spirituality like a total 180!
keeps calling it "gangster"....
isn't this a gangster film?
What about Sound of Music? Does it qualify?
I haven't seen it!
@lazarovalex 😲😲😲😲
Scorsese's films have less violence and sin than the stories in the Bible. To me, the question is: does it GLORIFY violence? Plenty of movies do, but his movies do not. They are a condemnation of violence and are parables showing how evil eventually destroys itself. Taxi Driver might be an exception, I guess. Just my opinion! So glad to see Silence get some love. The book was even more powerful.
Scorsese definitely has put some glorification of violence on screen as well as purposeful violence. In a lot of his movies violence often used as an artistic tool mixed with irony and sarcasm, so judging it becomes not too easy.
I remember watching this film a while ago. It was a suprise that Netflix had such an interesting and well-crafted Christian film like this.
Amazing! Thanks so much. I need to watch a few of these. The rest I totally agree with. Christians should be THE BEST at filmmaking but we have a reputation for being the worst. We need to continue to change that. For the glory of God. If I may add a few to the list, I would say : Les Miserables (1998) , End of the Spear (2005), Coat of Many Colors (2015, it looks super corny but actually pretty good!) , and Victor (2015).
@@ChrisCloudStaringAtFire Thanks for all the recommendations Chris!
Silence is a true masterpiece.
I agree!
glad I found this channel! not many Christian content creators out there that truly care about the art form and artistic value that can be achieved in Christian filmmaking
I absolutely believe that excellence glorifies God! The effect of great films has the ability to really shape what we believe, so it's a powerful tool and my heart aches every time I see a christian film that is lazy.
@lazarovalex Same!
Great video! I'll watch definitely Hidden Life, Tree of Life and Andrei Rublev....
Thank you! Let's go! These are absolutely great and unique films that have really moved my heart me closer to Christ
The film is magnificent. A very Catholic film, beautiful and hard to watch, as cruelty is so terrifying. See it anyway, it is a masterpiece.
Grew up watching the film. Made me do laps in the backyard with my head tilted back. It still is one of the best "faith-based" movies ever made.
Can you make with Spanish subtitles?
I need to rewatch it. It was one of my favorite films the year it came out
This is a Great movie. I bought it about a year ago on 4k UHD (Criterion Collection). This is a raw gritty and amazing movie, it very humanistic and gut wrenching centered in most scenes but watching through a biblical lens and also observing the main characters journey to the very end, you can't help but applaud. Great film and without a doubt something I encourage others who want to reach people in hard places like this, to share the Gospel, I highly recommend a watch!
Yes sir!
Nice suit. It looks good on you. I enjoyed the video. I had come across this movie before but never felt a need to watch it. I will definitely add it to much watchlist now. Thank you for the review and suggestion.
Thank you Matthew!
This was a terrible movie, mostly because it was 95% so good. The images, the dialogue, most of the story, most of the Jesuit spirituality - was all really good. The hero turned villain cannot be made up for as you find out he was really just suffering silently so that others wouldn't suffer. This misses what the Christian message really is.
I think there is a deeper message here: the Garfield character knew he was endangering his immortal soul by publicly denying Christ, but was prepared to do so out of compassion for his suffering parishioners. For a believer like himself, this was the most agonising thing he was asked to do, but he still did so out of compassion: it was his 'Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?' moment. The final image showed us his wife knew about his undiminished faith. The rest was left to Christ's mercy.
Best christian movie is Genesis: The Creation and the Flood."
It wasn’t actually Gods voice, it was Satans, using the voice of the main characters trusted best friend (Liam Neeson). Which is logical since Satan is cunning and a deciever. You can compare that to Scorceses other film The last temptation of Christ where the decieving Satan comes as an androgynious looking child with blond hair that tries to convince Jesus to not be crucified and save humanity.
“Ambition without God’s purpose for you,” eh? And if he believed being a great drummer was God’s purpose for him? Lord, please save me from your followers.
There's a difference between following God and following yourself. Not saying that an intersection between these two isn't possible, but following yourself without the goal of serving others becomes self glorification with a dead end. Re-directing glorification from yourself to God and turning self fulfillment into service is the way God can save you from destroying yourself by hustling until you break.
And I like the fact the the wise car is Doc Hudson.
That's right hahah
I completely disagree with your interpretation of the ending. It’s an ending, where he finally is able to make the sacrifices, to finally do what it takes to achieve excellence. Rather than go home with Daddy, and live a life of mediocrity.
…..also please bear in mind that the voice we hear in Rodrigues’ mind is never proven to be that of God, but only what he hears and believes to be God….are we really to believe that Scorsese has simply given us the “ right answer” to the dilemma on a silver platter? Not only does such a rendering misunderstand the complexity, irony and mystery of Scorsese’s work (whatever he might believe the right course of action to be), but it in this case also guts the message of the Cross…may God have mercy on us ….
That's a valid point I haven't thought about. Scorsese has indeed played around with this kind off complexities/irony in his messages in other movies. Still, the final note of the film was quite clear to me.
Interesting thoughts……you might however find the observations of Bishop Barron on the film worth pondering …a quick search should find it , forgive me I’m driving as I write this! God bless….. .
I've actually already skimmed through his review in preparation but would definitely need to watch it more thoroughly
Driving?!! 😅😂
One of my favorite stories…we even named one of our sons after him.
Phil, that's so cool!
God has really been stretching and molding you. I trust He will keep working on you, as you aspire to influence others toward and in Christ.
Thank you for this, Todd! Glory to God
Absolutely on target. Thanks for this, Alex.
anti catholic propaganda 😴 do you know how many Jews the Catholic Church protected in WW2?
I'm not anti-catholic. Please excuse any over-simplifications I've made in the video that might make me sound like that. Should've gotten into more detail!
You literally have to wait until the very last frame of the film to see where the heart of the film lies.
That's right. I was skeptical when the film turned before the epilogue, but the last 15-20 minutes make a clear position.
The greatest movie ever made. Composed by the late Greek composer Vangelis. Loved the reenactment of the score at the London 2012 Olympics.
It's great that the film resonates with you so much too. I loved the music!
Really enjoyed the movie as a teenager. Years later an English friend told me his (running) legs featured in the film as they were quite muscular. lol
So they didn't use the actual actors' legs in the close up shots?
@lazarovalex Not sure of the detail (friend, who played football, has passed). His sibling was a track competitor at university, which is probably how that happened.
I feel like Netflix is starting to pour in more access to Christian content: Mary, the Chosen, and Blue Miracle onto their platform. I remember the closest thing to a Christian show I watched on Netflix back then was Daredevil! Since Daredevil: Born Again is set to begin filming in March 2025, I’d like to hear your take on it with a Christian perspective of a secular series with a Christian protagonist. I know the series has sexy scenes, violence, drugs, gangs etc. and I was wondering if all that noise would be too distracting for any ounce of light to shine through to viewers.
I think I saw the first season some years ago, but honestly can't remember much and I'm not interested in seeing anything from Marvel/DC anymore. Christianity is used by a lot of secular content as a cultural/aesthetic tool and if it has the type content you write about I can't imagine it being really faith-based. Although all of this can be hard to discern sometimes, the superhero genre specifically for me is almost impossible to have a truly christian message.
I remember watching this in a hotel with a Netflix login a few years back and It was the first thing that came up when I typed ‘Jesus’. I had no idea it was actually Christian, it was such a great movie (story and style). I couldn’t believe Netflix had content like this.
Yes, faith-based movies and shows are definitely becoming more mainstream. Looking forward to what's to come out!
Thanks for the recommendation. I hadn't heard of it until this video. Btw, I think UA-cam is throttling this one. As of my viewing this, it's sitting at 74 views after 12 hours. Maybe you should reupload?
Glad I could help you discover this movie! UA-cam just has some videos perform better some worse, so I don't think that's anything unusual.
Ya, but like ... aren't you just butthurt about someone being successful WITHOUT your imaginary sky daddy? Jesus, the pick-me narcissism is so toxic.
You can be successful and follow your talent without having God on your side. But just look into the tragic overdoses, suicides, divorce-rates, bankruptcys, abuse, violence, perversion and capitalist slavery that is so common and widespread among the rich, famous and creative "elites". Why are people with a lot of talent, money and power so often so miserable? Why can't they have healthy and fulfilling lives, when they have so much? God doesn't want us to reach our goals and not be able to enjoy them. He has a perfect plan, a calling and purpose for us, specifically made for you and me and everyone else. We can loose our way and be fine for a while, but at one point or another, chaos emerges.
@lazarovalexI I get your point. Also, great video. Just my two cents…I would say because most of those people are suffering from high degrees of consciousness & self~actualisation & awareness. The more transcendental Truth a person unlocks, the greater they suffer. The Transcendental Truth (God) is not inherently pleasant or pain-less. Quite the opposite actually. God itself has no free will as God cannot choose NOT to be God. All trickles down from there.
people hate it??? who said? rotten tomato audience socre has 94%.. other aggregated reviews state the same.
The film itself like I said has been a huge success. But the ending is what many people have issues with, misunderstanding it, being confused by it and some people even hating it for its subverted way of delivering the message.
I haven't even started watching the video yet I just wanted to comment on the title of this vid. It's easily one of the most exhilarating endings to a film in the history of cinema. Haven't heard of too many people hating it. Good title though, it got into the algorithm and got me to click.
The film is generally beloved but concerning the ending from what I've seen online (apart from video essay deconstructing/analyzing what it's really about), there's a lot of confusion, misunderstanding and yes, even hate among film fans. Although hate would be the least amount of responses after confusion and misunderstanding.
Qur'an 45:23. Have you seen ˹O Prophet˺ those who have taken their own desires as their god? ˹And so˺ Allah left them to stray knowingly, sealed their hearing and hearts, and placed a cover on their sight. Who then can guide them after Allah?
Thank you for making these videos man! Not a lot of Christians in the film space. It’s refreshing to know there are other people watching secular films from the same Christian lense. I think Christians can still enjoy movies as long as we view it from our worldview
Thank you for watching! That's right, we have to be in the world not of the world, while carefully selecting what brings us closer to God or away from Him.
Unreflected worshipping is always bad. Religion included.
Doing anything in any unreflected isn't good. Faith starts where understanding ends and that's why we should be careful what we put our trust and faith into. Because of that Jesus teaches to listen first, then understand, then have faith.
@lazarovalex It's a paradox. We can't understand it that's why faith is needed. But we should understand what we believe in because otherwise it's unreflected and blind following... I'm more on the side of Buddhism where passion and following and idol is more part of the problem. Why does one need an idol in the first place? If we are made in the image of God it's all already there. Meditation is the way to find the way back to what's real and get rid of all the wanting. To get rid of the ego. In the end the result is the same. A life defined by love and compassion. And talking about compassion - you don't treat anyone like that teacher did. And you don't treat yourself like that either.
It comes back to what I tried to say in the video, if you don't want to fix your gaze on God and won't put your faith in God, you'll still end up following something else. Love and compassion are real, like you say. Anyone agrees on that. But HOW we love, that's where people got all kinds of ideas if they follow themselves. Christianity says that your wants & needs are here for a reason. But some of them are put by God in you and others are cultivated because of your sinful nature. Jesus helps you navigate all of that. There is only one way to become a christian, it's an active choice only you can make. That choice is not asked of you to make blindly but willingly, knowing specifically what you're getting yourself into and only then, trusting and having faith. That's why God became man, walked among us and lived a perfect life, as an example to truly lead and guide us, so we don't base our values on assumptions. Because then each of us will end up with his own view of reality, while we are all living in the same reality that binds to the same rules and subsequently live in chaos and not according to reality. You can get a plane into the air only by following the laws of physics and thus fulfill its purpose. You can only master the human experience and find what you are called for by following the word of God.
@lazarovalex History is filled with characters bound by some existential, willing yet secular (or even atheistic) purpose. The transcendent experience for them could be some art, science, philosophy, warfare. I think to discount other people's mastery ("only master it if") of their own experiences if it isn't by the word of God just sucks tbh Of course you can argue that these transcendent devotions with proper reflection can be mapped on to or is similar to following the word of God in a spiritual sense ala JBP but I personally don't buy that
We need more Christian films like this.
I agree
I really enjoyed the review. I personally think the film was good because of that ending. Even outside of a Christian perspective, I thought it asked a profound question regarding what we're willing to do for success. It's one thing to give up your pleasures, another to give up your relationships, and yet another to even give up your dignity or willingness to defend yourself. There's something profound and paradoxical about seeing the protagonist give up everything to be "great", even including his self-worth
Silence is one of my favorite movies, saw it a couple years ago and constantly find myself thinking about it to this day.
It grew on me even more after rewatching it
@lazarovalexI’m glad you rewatched it. I was watching a video of yours from a couple weeks ago and you said you’d only seen it the once. It deserves the extra attention. It hits harder as a believer. I think it is a very powerful movie and I had ordered the Blu-ray just a couple days before you posted this video. I look forward to rewatching it because the first time was more of an emotional reaction. Listening to others be tortured because of you is something I had never thought of. And it challenged me. I’m willing to die for Christ. Am I willing to listen to my children be tortured? Some weight is too heavy for men, if it weren’t then why did Christ have to die? We are too weak to follow the law perfectly. His yolk is easy. It’s one of the few films that hit me emotionally and challenged me so heavily at the same time. I wept when the man was on the cross in the ocean. And when he hears the people being tortured and yells at the guards to stop the sound. And many other times that I don’t remember as clearly since I’ve seen it the once. Love your channel brother as a fellow believer and art of film fan.
Seen it 2 times. I love this movie.
It's one of those you can watch over and over again
I didn't expect this particular point of view or insight when clicking your video... but, exactly, 100%.Thee tone etc of the movie is realistic to the brutality of life and struggles. Love the Biblical lens you give. Great movie.
Thanks! It's so cool that you were open to hearing something that you didn't expect.
One of most powerful films about faith I've ever seen.
Yessir definetly
