Routine maintenance in the pheasant pen with our 10-week old flock of 60 plus pheasants. They are halfway to being fully grown. We typically like to switch up their structure, turnover dirt, and add lots of perching logs for them to roost on.
Putting Blinders on Pheasants - 8 Weeks Old
Переглядів 5854 місяці тому
This video shows the process of putting blinders on pheasants. This is done to protect the birds from aggressively pecking each other. Putting blinders on the birds does not harm them. The best time to do this process is from 5 to 8 weeks old. It's a quick, easy, and rather interesting process!

    Just found your videos. Excellent info! I have a few chickens and was wondering, if I have a chicken that’s broody, could I put a fertilized pheasant egg under her and would she raise it? I’m in Appleton so not far from you! Love the videos! Thank you!

Can someone explain this, please??

      @oi-nf9uz 4 місяці тому

      Idk about pheasants but chickens can see 300° around themselves, i assume pheasants are the same cause their eyes are on the side of their head. They dont have any problem walking around or eating, they just can't peck accurately to hurt other birds.

    • @ChefMeowMeow

      Most birds have insanely good peripheral vision, especially prey birds like pheasants, chickens, turkeys, etc. He’ll be just fine

    • @whalescience8831

      Most prey animals have more peripheral vision in general. These blinders do obviously impact their forward vision, but they adapt and get by just fine.

      Well the other option is just not rearing birds in such high density, improving genetics, and giving them better feed to improve nutrition. Obviously consumers won't front that cost though (as long as thet don't have to witness the inherent cruelty).

      People dont understand that they ran experiments to raise flocks without blinders or beak trimming and they lost 20% of individuals due to cannibalism. Then people wont spend the extra $1 per pound it'd cost to change stocking densities or improve breeding to reduce the issue of cannibalism.

    I live in Soulsbyville California and I'm thinking of raising Pheasant to release into my area because they used to be here but not anymore... I here it's been multiple decades since they seen any, so I'm going to bring in a bunch of chick's and raise them up to let go.... I need to see what you do and how you do it because I'm a hands on learner. I have an aviary just built for chickens and I did one for Ducks, but the one I'm going to build for the Pheasant is going to be bigger than either of the other two... I'll be watching your videos , thank you so much !! R/Steve 😊

      Hey Steve! I appreciate your comment. Yes, it’s really hard for pheasants to survive in their own in the wild. I’ve experienced exactly what you are describing. I’d suggest you watch my “Raising Pheasants” video for a look at the full process from raising pheasant chicks to adult birds. All my pheasant videos could be of some help honestly. I plan to create a video about how I built my pheasant pen enclosure within a few weeks.

    I got two hens. One male. And he is gorgeous. But I got. 30 eggs ready. And bunch of chics. But they all are female. No Roos. At all how are you incubating temps. To get Roos.

    • @schmitzfarmandoutdoors
      @schmitzfarmandoutdoors 5 місяців тому

      Hey Michaela! The incubating process doesn’t have an impact on the sex of the chick. When the chicks hatch, they all look the same. It takes a careful eye to tell a male from a female apart when they hatch. I’m guessing you probably have roosters in your batch of chicks. You might not be able to tell the difference until they start growing darker feathers 6 weeks old.
