Building the World's Fastest LGA1150 Computer
In this episode I take another crack at building the fastest retro pc I can. In my previous series "Building the World's Fastest AM3+ Computer" I built the fastest computer possible with the worst technology from 2014.
This time around I am attempting to build the fastest computer possible with the best technology from that same time period.

In this episode I continued to push the limits for my AM3 computer and add an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX video card to the system. I recently purchased a new video card for my main gaming / editing computer. Before I install it in it's permanent home I decided to do something really dumb and test it out in a computer that is nearly 13 years old.

How do I do it with a socket plug that has hor ness for wires to plug into
Congrats to you and your not-expert boys. My not-expert boy changed the engine air filter, some moths ago, by himself (6yo) into our Jetta Last weekend I ordered some Osram Night Breaker H7 LED , as these became street legal here in Romania , after Osram obtained some approvals from the local car safety authorities. The price was high - around 125 dollars. Probably that I paid alot for the brand :))) The bulbs came in today , but I am still waiting for the mounting adapter. I am loosing my patience.
at 10:39 you got the thing about the brand new 3D Vcache AMD processors wrong, they have 96MB's of L3 Cache, not 64MB's. Total is 104MB's. The Ryzen 9 7950x3D & 9950x3D 16c/32t processors have 128MB's of L3 cache (total is 145MB's over-all). Only the non-3d 7950x, 7900x, 9900x, and 9950x processors have 64MB's of L3 cache. The 7700x & 9700x only have 32MB's of L3 cache. The 5950x only has 64MB's of L3 cache tho, while the 5800x3D has 96MB's (as is the standard with all the 8c/16t 3D vcache parts from AMD so far)
@@Nighterlev good catch, sorry about that. Takes weeks to make these and I’m human and make mistakes. The point of the video still holds that the extra cache is making a huge impact on performance whether it’s an old processor or new. Thanks for watching and commenting. Also thanks for catching my mistake.
hi....pci express 3.0 on amd fx chipset ...unknown...but existed... pci express 2.0 default in all motherboars... 🎉🎉🎉 interesting video
Nah bro I just tell everyone about motorsportsreg or hpdejunkie and call it a day
5775c was probably the most under-rated processor ever. 5th gen got totally overlooked.
surprised ya didn't test windows 10, as it has less stuff running in the background compared to 11, that and the task scheduler in 11 is more for newer hardware compared to 10's task scheduler.
I did and they were slightly better… but my idea was to see how new I could go on old hardware… that and it was kind of a fun side quest to get Windows 11 to install on unsupported hardware 😁
Hi, nice video, I recently put together a gaming PC with an old Dell 7050, Intel i5 7500 and a Radeon RX6400. The smart screen that you have is interesting, would you mind sharing a link for the one you got please? I also wanted to ask if it can be used for anything else besides displaying computer stats. For example could you display streaming stats on it? Or a Google calendar? etc... thanks for the video!
Hi Andrew, the link to the screen is in the video description. The screen is really customizable, but I’m not sure if you can show streaming stats.
Main thing I can’t get out of my head though is that you wouldn’t be running a 5775C in 2014 as it did not launch until Q2 2015! Intel’s ARK page for the CPU states this clearly (which I know you have been to because of the IRIS eDRAM stuff in the video).
Yes, you are correct. The processor came out in Q2 2015. However, the motherboard came out in 2014. The intent of the video as stated when I was listing the rules was to imagine upgrading the LGA 1150 platform as far as you could go. Also nine year old technology has less of a ring to it than 10. 🤣. But thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Really nice build. I've never heard of that cpu before and paused the video to look it up. It's a very interesting chip and seems like you made a good choice in using it. I have recently.built and use an LGA 1150 Haswell machine. It has an Asrock Z97 Extreme 6 with M.2 NVME, the I7-4790K, 16GB of 1866mhz G.Skill ram and using an XFX RX 580. The components are still relatively cheap and work really well for my needs. I have sold a couple of the MSI Z87 board combos with the 4790K recently too. LGA 1150 is still a viable option for the budget minded. I wonder if the extra fan you installed would make any difference if it was reversed blowing air out instead of in? Anyway liked and subbed your channel, much appreciated.
Good point about the car to be ready. 3 out of my 10 students retire early due to no brake pads left or some consumables issues. 1 like from me!
PCIE 4.0 GPU is a bit overkill for that old system but cool video 👍
Completely agree. If you check out some of my other videos, you’ll see I use this video card for a lot of different builds. I mainly use it to make sure the video card is not a bottleneck in these older systems. That said this 5775C was taking the video card right up to full usage which was super impressive.
you don't need that big of air cooler
I know. I had it left over from my FX 9590 build.
Nice build. Have to say I was surprised that the extra fan didn't make that much of a difference to the over all cooling, I would have lost that bet. The addition of the digital display is a really nice touch to the over all build and something I'm considering myself. Well done and subscribed.
The 5775C is a very cool CPU that I'd like to snag at some point, but these command $80+ on ebay. It's on 14nm, and that's cool, but that Level 4 cache, a whopping 128MB of it! I want to grab one as a foil to my incoming 4790K and my built-it-when-new FX-8350 system. My 4790K on an X87 board and 16GB of DDR3 should arrive tomorrow. Yes, it's supposedly a working combo, so the BIOS will have been updated. If not, I'll pick up the cheapest working Haswell I can find and do it. Cooling will be a Thermalright Assassin 120 0f some flavor, in a Montech Air 1000 Premium case. I'm going to pair it with a few different GPUs for testing: R9-290, RX-580, and 980Ti to keep it more or less period correct. If all those seem to be leaving the Haswell chip asking for more, I can go as high as a 7900XTX. But I think it's going to run out of oomph with around 2080Ti / 6750XT level.
Just subscribe and your imagination and creativity is amazing.. Already liked it..
Neither I’am I
I think everyone should have a Haswell i7 machine for playing older games. Mine has a GTX 670SC and it is enough to get a good 1440p experience in games from up to around 2015. I made it a sleeper by putting it in a cheap ass case from the early P4 era. I think there was originally a P4 2.0A in it with some crappy onboard graphics. I got a Z87 MB for $25. Having a Z97 with NVMe support would have just been a waste of money for me but if you're trying to play Helldivers 2, you probably want an NVMe to help you out a bit on load times. Why put the wear and tear on my main PC playing an old game? The 5775C is a waste of money because a 4790 is cheaper and will game the same. Pretty much within margin of error on benchmark scores because Broadwell was an abortion of a CPU generation I think a 6750XT is going to be bottlenecked in a lot of scenarios by the CPU. It is just too much GPU for it in 2024. IDK, you might be fine at 1440p. This is definitely not a 4k GPU so that's really not a viable option unless you want to play everything at 30fps on low settings. The cool thing about Haswell, besides price/performance on current used market is the fact it is the oldest intel hardware that can run Windows 11 24H2. It is the GOAT. Especially since it took like three more generations for intel to substantially improve performance.
The only thing I will disagree with you on is the 4790k gaming the same. I tried it as the first processor for this video. It’s the equivalent of the 5775C without the extra L4 cache. 5775c overclocked to 4.2GHz with L4 destroyed the 4790k overclocked to 4.9GHz
Thought it was gonna be a "best LGA1150 PC from 2014" type video and was kinda disappointed
Watch the video again and Imagine the pc in a bright red oversized case with a tiny window showing off a dual GTX 980 setup and a sata ssd hard drive… then take away about 10fps and you’re there.
Great video, I was just searching to see if there are DDR 3 Builds for modern gaming. There are not many recent videos that cover modern gaming on ddr3, I appreciated the time and effort in this build. Trying to get my young nephew to building older pcs for experience. He's into Fortnite and older games. Thanks, keep it up!
This summarizes the Intel vs AMD from 10 years ago. It took you just one video this time and it beat the AMD system pretty well. Now, I think the 10 year old build in 2034 will be a little more interesting, since AMD usually wins using that 3D cache, but Intel sometimes comes on top as well. Great video, love this kind of content.
Thanks for watching! Yeah if I ever win the lottery I would love to do these videos but with latest and greatest stuff from today. That said it is pretty cool to come back and visit this stuff after it’s all been released. I’m sure there are things we will be learning about AMD 3D Cache but only after the tech has been out for a few years.
in 10 years the 5800x3d will probably fall behind due to cores as time goes games eat more threads but the 5950x vs the i9 12900k would probably be a good showing
intel really only ever comes out on top these days if the game has a strong bias towards intel CPUs.
@@josephdias5859 oh no the 5800x3D chip will always beat the 5950x in gaming, even when games start using more threads over-all in the future. This is mainly due to the higher frequencies the 5800x3D chip can hit on all of it's cores all at once vs the 5950x, more cores don't really matter if only the 1st 4 - 8 cores can hit the advertised speeds while everything else below that falls behind. It is also because the 5800x3D has more cache then the 5950x, the 5950x only has 64MB's of L3 cache. The 5800x3D has 96MB's of L3 cache.
@@Nighterlev a 5800x3d has lower frequency by alot my 5900x can hit 5.7ghz all core were if you try to push frequency on 5800x3d more than stock it will cause the chip to fail
Awesome video. Great info on that cpu as well.
I have this same kind of setup but on the ROG Corsair Fomula-v 990FX motherboard with a 1200w power supply, water cooled with crossfired vega 56 GPUs and a fatality sound blaster sound card to get a little less strain on the cpu on 32gb of 2400 ram, i am going to do a M.2 NVME setup on it and see how it goes. Old setup but going to see how far I can take it, i have had it running at 5.2ghz stable with watercooling previously. Thanks for some of the info, helps me deck out my old system for the kids.
I had a Unitronic stage 2 in my 1.8t mark 4 so I’m on the fence between Unitronic stage 1 vs APR stage 1
Nice
wth, Intresting choice to run this pc with ur TV but I just dont see the point, 9590 was worst cpu in that whole line up it had no benefits over 8350 and just a bit faster than 8370e that only used 95W, but putting fx line aside there plenty intel i7 cpus 6th gen 7th for pennies that blows this cpu out on stock speeds without any oc required and so much less heat. When I heard this cpu goes for 100$ on ebay I though to myself maybe those stock was not sold out for so long that seller forgot that still selling these cpu, for 90$ I saw 1950 amd threadripper being sold in quite few places and that cpu has 16 cores and still 180w... still interesting video
@@ChaotixAsbestos not wrong on any point. I was just curious to see how far you could push this. I’m working on a video that highlights the best Intel had to offer at the same time.
@@MereMortalsAttempt Ah. It makes sense building fun and pc is interesting and fun and playing games from time to time on it its fun too. I have a problem with my 2015 jetta Se tsi 1.8 L. I was driving this morning and suddenly the check engine light was blinking and the traction control and EPC lights both came on. Everything I’ve been able to find online points toward replacing the engine coils and spark plugs. I had the spark plugs replaced about 1.5 years ago at a vw dealership. cool this video comes at the right moment, i am rebuilding my fx system for server things, Video Coding, nas and for fun. and i have the sabertooth 2.0 Gen 3. But i am able to run the memory 32 GB @ 2400 Mhz on my FX8320 CPU. I still need the old cpu fan to make my setup complete, but then i can post some informations here. There are some scenarios where PCIe 3.0 does matter beside NVME. I used the board on linux and windows, and on linux folding @ home for example ran quicker using PCIe 3.0. (GPU Folding, CPU Folding is always faster as linux is more efficent with multithreaded Cpus) Today , i would think about NVENC Coding on GPU, where the cpu is pushing data towards the GPU as fast as possible, that might benefit, a bit, too. I will test it. I am glad i saw in your video, that there is an option with e modded bios to use nvme, ´cause that does matter A LOT at video coding! Thank you, great Video!
All around beautifully done from the 1st to this last video... perfect.
Thanks for the video! I have the same car and was wondering if the valve open sound was annoyingly loud. I think I might just get the non-valved version.
@@RandyMangubat when I added a down pipe I was glad I had the valved exhaust.
🙂 i have three different am3+ boards, and i checked the cpu support list, looks like the highest is 8350 8370, the cpu u mentioned i check on ebay and theres two different FX 9??? and those cpu's are kinda sketchy because it looks like not just any motherboard supports those cpus, i think u have a much larger pool of compatible used boards if u stick with 8320 8350 8370, unless maybe you can tell me if FX9000 posts even tho its not on the cpu support list? thanks for the video
The reason there’s only a handful of motherboards that can run the 9590 and 9530 is due to the power requirements of the processor. They basically took an 8350 and overclocked the heck out of it and jammed a bunch of voltage on it. as far as architecture goes, it’s terrible. But it can still get the job done. I’m working on a new series looking at Intel of the day and it is pretty fascinating what the LGA 1150 socket could do.
@@MereMortalsAttempt 😊 oh i see i didnt know any of that, ive looked around youtube benchmarks and the FX8300's float somewhere between first gen i7-870 and second i7-2600 so either the FX or the old i7 should be able to play all older pc games, i just finished rebuilding my first gen intel i7 HP Z200, u can play cyberpunk 2077 1080 medium, the game uses all 8 threads, next up is my Core2Quad, then two more i7-870, then rebuild the three AM3+ systems i have, thx and have a nice weekend

You’re suppose to add a thin amount of anti-seize or grease on the hub centric part of the hub not cake it on the back of the spacer.
💪😂 thanks for the advice. I’ll clean it up
no problem. those two mating surfaces should always be clean. if they ever rust they should be wire wheeled.
You’ve done old CPU content why not old GPU content?? Bring in some old Radeon Fury cards, maybe some NVIDIA 700 series stuff. Its crazy to think about how old that stuff has gotten
The only issue with the video card route is that it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that you won’t be able to really do much with the old cards. I got really interested in this topic because these old CPU’s paired with modern hard drives and video cards can actually still hold up. That FX computer is in my sons room and he regularly plays Fortnite and other computer games on it.
Came for VW Jetta mods, stayed for AM3+ content
😂😂😂…. I was thinking my channel content is a bit all over the place. Glad you enjoyed the videos.

Hey, have the same car in the same color. Upon jacking, did you use a pinch weld adaptor for the floor jack or did you just jack it up on the pinch weld itself? New to anything car DIY, so this helps a lot.
I just jacked it up on the pinch weld. ECS sells hockey puck looking protectors I’ve been thinking about getting. So far I’ve never had a car where I folded my weld (knock on wood) All that said if you’re careful you don’t “need” additional tools to jack the car up.
