Goal setting for academic writers
Goal setting is a big part of productivity, and a humane and realistic approach to goal setting for writing sessions can be a source of motivation and positive energy for academic writers and graduate students. This approach helps writers to stay productive during challenging times by pairing the SMART framework for goal setting with the concepts of A-time and B-time from Eviatar Zerubavel’s book The Clockwork Muse.

The Beauty of Padise: Spinning Wheel Restoration
Переглядів 8 тис.3 роки тому
This video documents the restoration of a unique spinning wheel from Padise, Estonia. I am a folklorist researching the material culture of wool and textile crafts in Estonia, and part of my work involves studying antique textile tools. I am also a handspinner, so I love to put those tools to work in my own craft. I found this spinning wheel for sale in Haapsalu, Estonia. The seller told me tha...
Winding yarn with an Estonian yarn swift
Переглядів 5973 роки тому
This video shows an antique Estonian yarn swift (kerilaud) in action as I wind a ball of my handspun yarn made from Kihnu native sheep wool. This swift was given to me by a friend in trade for teaching her to spin and setting up her antique spinning wheel. The base is normally only one piece, but this one needed a center post. With wood from another friend's cherry tree, I used traditional tool...
Winding linen with a "niks": An archaic Estonian yarn-winding tool
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 роки тому
After stumbling across this yarn winding tool in the Estonian National Museum's collections, I decided to make one and give it a try! I carved it from a green horse chestnut stick and burned old Estonian folk symbols on it. It does a great job protecting my hands from abrasion when winding linen, and it helps me to keep even tension on my thread or yarn as I wind it. This is even more important...
Berta's Flax: Unboxing 1940s dowry flax fiber
Переглядів 8433 роки тому
I am unboxing flax stricks, prepared line flax fiber ready for spinning, from the 1940s dowry chest of an Austrian woman named Berta. Berta's son gave the flax to a local fiber artist who has made it her mission to see that it would find new life in the hands of people who would transform it into beautiful textiles. The flax and Berta's story have since travelled to spinners worldwide. Find our...

"Spa day" for my Estonian spinning wheel and musings on antique spinning wheels and material culture. Spinning wheel: Likely made by Vilbert Graf (1910-1987) in Leoski, southern Estonia in 1932. A close-up demonstration of how I weave the chevron pattern for sock garters
Finger Weaving: Sock Garters (Part 1)
Переглядів 8294 роки тому
A simple demonstration of how I weave a sock garter using a plain weave structure and a chevron pattern. This is based on Estonian methods for making a säärepael from the book 17 Kirrivat Paela by Lüüli Kiik and my hazy memories of one lesson over a year ago!
Spinning Demo - Posting

This is a technique that I learned from Carson Demers at PLY Away 3. It's a lifesaver for those of us who have had De Quervain's tendonitis! Spinning wheel: Canadian Production Wheel, presumed Laurence Fiber: Targee, bamboo, and silk
Hmm. Backwards from everything else I've seen...but this one would easily link the outside edges to additional chevrons to give the linked sennit from the second book on fingerweaving I read. 30 minutes later...huzza huzza! I finally have a double chevron with even tension! Hurray!
A little instructional commentary would have been nice. How many strands in this. How to get a start. just a little something. Cool pattern.
I appreciate the feedback. This was one of the first videos I made, so I was still getting to know the medium. I hope to make a longer video in the future with more instructional content. Thanks for watching!
Chii Migwech from an Anishinaabekwe who forgot how to weave a Chevron pattern even after her aunt showed her and bought her a book. 😂😂😂😂 You're a life saver
I'm so glad that it was helpful! May your hands be nimble and your heart light in the weaving.
You provide so much lovely information in such a short video!!!!
Thank you! I love making these bite-size videos. Hopefully, I'll get around to making some longer ones, too.
your videos are short but all so wonderful!❤️
Glad you like them!
that wheel makes me drool... but so does my junk wheel. i took the back tire off a broken bike, stuck a 2point knitting needle in there, added a drive band. bam, he's a 'greatwheel'. i call him Oengus. he gets the job did... :) thanks for letting us view this beaut.
Beautiful! What splendid fibre and a wonderful story.
Thank you!
Makes me want to give my antique spinning wheel "Nymble" some TLC straight away. I have found, that the antique ones are far easier to spin with than any modern ones I have tried. My Nymble basically taught me to spin. I had tried and tried, with a drop spindle, and a modern one, and it was not exactly a pleasant experience. Then I found Nymble, sat down, and was able to spin beautiful yarn as soon as my foot touched her treadle. The old wheels have treadles that are often less steep than the modern ones, and they have a beautiful balance. i have yet to find a modern one i would prefer over any of my antique ones - and I do have an Ashford traditional, which is not a bad wheel, but the antique ones have soul, and are teachers, like you said!
So sweet to see your dear face and to know you're doing what makes you happy and contributes to the knowledge of these arts & history

What a lovely tribute. I too have fallen for the older wheels (though it is the CPWs that keep coming home to spin with me). A spring spa day for them is on the list.
Thank you! CPWs are fantastic wheels.
Thank you. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thank you so much!
