Desert Boots of French Foreign Legion
I recently came across a fascinating pair of shoes I couldn't wait to share. The brand, Palladium, has a rich history dating back to 1947. Founded in France, the company initially specialized in creating a boot style worn by French Legionnaires. This particular style of boot predated the company's establishment, and it is said to have been worn by French Legionnaires, fulfilling their duties in places such as Morocco, Algeria, and Indochina.
The original boots were crafted with a vulcanized rubber sole directly attached to the upper, while the modernized version features a rubber outsole unit and a rubberized top rand with the bottom made of EVA. Made entirely of polyester fabric, this updated version also includes an elastic shock cord, adding a contemporary touch to the classic design. Palladium describes the Pallabrousse Legion, the original canvas boot they produced in 1947, as the pillar of the Palladium legend. Now, the company is relaunching this iconic boot for a new generation of explorers.
As the boot that accompanied the French Foreign Legion across the globe, the Pallabrousse Legion has been reintroduced with modern materials while maintaining its timeless heritage. Palladium has used the original Pallabrousse molds and shoe lasts as the foundation for this project, ensuring that the original design elements have been enhanced to suit modern demands while preserving the boot's classic appeal. The boot boasts a 100% organic cotton canvas upper, resting on Palladium's iconic lug outsole, which effectively reduces foot fatigue. Furthermore, it features tasteful, decorative details that pay homage to its remarkable history.
The story behind these boots is truly captivating. The fact that they were originally designed for French Legionnaires and have now been updated for the modern explorer demonstrates the lasting appeal and versatility of this footwear. Whether you're keen to embrace a piece of military history or simply appreciate the fusion of classic design with contemporary materials, the Pallabrousse Legion by Palladium is a remarkable example of heritage meeting modernity in the world of footwear.

My humble opinion... When I was in the Legion we only used these (occasionally) in the compound on down time. they were an alternative to wearing track shoes or sport shoes. In the bush we wore regular black leather boots, the sole was really tough and it offered ankle support... these Palladium have a bad sole and stones get stuck in the profile all the time... Now of course the market is full of great boots by Meindle and Haix etc etc which replaced the black leather boots... Palladium (and a few other makers) were fine for their time... that time was Indochine and Algeria, where there simply were no alternatives and light boots were needed... they are now way outdated... I still have a few pairs, newly bought, for summer wear... but I would never have put my trust in these in the field... especially on a long march
Your comment was more informative than the video.
Thank you very much! Yes I should have explained these are an old design. I use the modern EVA versions and yes it collects stones every time I wear them. Keep watching!
Ha ha - You are welcome to not watch anytime you like.
@@thesneakerfactory830 I like em as well for everyday civvie use, but I would not trust them as my only boots in the field.
Yes as a boot design they are obsolete, As a fashion piece spot on!
Subtly interesting style. The grosgrain over the quarter seams got me thinking. Not sure I'd want to ruck a full pack on those heels, though! You definitely got me nervous wrangling that snap knife fully extended. Might treat yourself to a mill knife next time you're at shoe supply, or on Amazon. Hyde, C.S. Osborne, and even Dexter all still make decent ones for honest money. Protect them dawg paws. Congrats on your new pair. Maybe they're telling us the French Foreign Legion has a secret space squad?
Yeah thanks I have some new blades for my oscillating cutter. And I'm thinking to install a fixed blade per a belt cutter. Keep watching!
Very informative video. I was curious what makes cotton a better material choice than polyester in the foot bed?
I've been thinking about this too. and polyester is much better, Mode color stable when wet, will dry faster and I expect is more durable under friction. Also for any molded footbeds you will need polyester as it can conform to the during the forming operations. Thanks And Keep watching!
How do you get access to machines
Hello, i have a little confusion with the Standard Last Length measurement, you said in your book that the Standard Last Length is measured "from the heal seat to the toe point", but the Heel Seat is defined to be "the flat section of the heel", while in the picture where the SSL is presented, the measurement of SSL seems to start from furthest point at the heel (so under the heel curve) -> to the toe point. Is the 2nd variant correct? Thank you in advance.
Why is the strobel stitching initially done only till the top half, is there a reason as to why they don't just stitch the upper to the insole board completely ?
What you are seeing is the lasting apron for the toe/Vamp of the boot. The lining is fully stitched but they will need to use a lasting machine to pull the toe down. Also in this case they will be attaching the steel toe before the leather vamp is pulled tight. Great Questions. Visit www.shoemakersacademy.com to lean more

Can you help me to learn how to design and make the shoe
Yes this is what we do! shoemakersacademy.com/shoemaking-text-books/
The wire lasting is really cool. I've been looking into it, and so far it seems distinctly Mexican, though American cowboy boot makers will often do a similar move they call "wiping" with a leather thong rather than wire, but only after lasting with tacks, to bring in any last wrinkles. Apart from that, the closest I've found outside the Americas was some old footage of an English factory with a machine for toe lasting men's dress shoes that inserted and tensioned lengths of nylon cord. Kind of like string lasting, but with friction rather than holes.
great video! whats the name of the factory?
If you need a vulc factory I can help you. Book a chat here: calendly.com/ask_a_shoe_dog/
well its a bit hard to really tell from your video's, i do agree for high quality stuff this looks rather poorly run. but its in line whith that one time we( co i worked for) closed a mashene room in AU and opened one in China. very poor consistency at best. ..... my brother and I looked in to Alibaba a year or 2 ago, just dont LOL ..... most of the factory's i worked in looked a lot lick this place, Australia has a very small/ shirking industry, i always thort thay wer all going broke ( sum were/ did go bust )! LOL one or 2 were pritty bad ! do you ever go Down Under? LOL ied love to see more factory videos :)
There are so many great factories, there is no need for a ANY export brand to be working in place like this. Factories like this soliciting branded production are what make my services so valuable. You are welcome!
Hi,I am a Chinese
There are many factories like this in China’s
There are many great factories and some not so good. We are looking for Export grade with high standards. For inexpensive "local" market shoes this would be okay...I guess.

You are not 100% correct with your duty assessment unless you have CBP rulings on your shoes.
Yes of course it's best to a get ruling if you are not sure! There are many fringe cases and some HTS codes that invite customs review. Be carful! And we have a course! shoemakersacademy.com/courses/footwear-import-duty/

I've 2 safety shoes (safety jogger), and all outersole crumble break like this one after I'm not using it 1 year (store in the box).
Well, PU is also susceptible to chemical attach or the direct attached machine did not have the mix adjusted correctly....
@@thesneakerfactory830 I think next time I'll choose EVA and Rubber based with goodyear welt. If it breaks just resole it and change to vibram. Thanks for reply.
Can I get a custom-made outsole just like the one used for aj1 utility prowler? That translucent purple sole looks insanely good.
You will need to shop around.......
As a crafter, it's AWESOME to see all the tools explained, thanks for sharing this, it gets me excited about some new projects 😃 I also picked up a secret in the Hirschkleber (around 08:28), that can work great on leather and keep it breathable while also adding some structural ridigity. That can be a game changer for some projects, and open up doors for new ones. Thanks for the knowledge!
Have fun! Enjoy! And let us see your project.

Real guy! I sprung for the Hirschkleber, too. It's great stuff, and I'm handwelting leather stiffeners, so the motivation's there. But the cost and the single source aren't great. I've had real experienced people tell me wallpaper paste or just straight up PVA. In the USA, the money saved is enough for a whole other tool from Craftool or Osborne.
Yes, Hirschkleber is a bit spendy, but it's very effective, and a little goes a long way. Thanks for watching! Please enjoy 15% off anything on the site. Code: Friend15 shoemakersacademy.com/?ref=2
