    I've been accepted into the Riverside County office of Education , teacher certification program. I have to first to the pre-service hours, then I will be ready to apply to intern teach. After pre-service hours, do I have to take the cset test? I heard they are doing away with that? Also, I'm a little petrified, as I have no prior experience teaching. How do you even know how to lesson plan, and everything????? please any advise. I should start next fall...

    I was a high school history and government teacher for 23 years at the same school. Very fortunate to have a competent and empathetic principal for most of that time. However when I retired in 2015 I kind of felt like a long time prisoner being released into a world of freedom. No more grading essays and tests at night and on the weekends. No more preparing and sending lesson plans to TPTB on Sundays. I don’t regret my time in the classroom because I was fortunate to work with many wonderful students and the pension is a nice perk. Now my wife and I own a family business pet sitting and dog walking. Our client dogs get so excited when I arrive at their house. Plus with all the walking my BP is now normal and I’ve lost 30 lbs plus the income is a nice supplement.

    Honestly, I relate to a lot of this! This is my second year of teaching, and I’m already tapped out. From dealing with a bunch of misbehaved kids, to catty/petty coworkers, and feeling like I need to make teaching my entire life to survive in this career, I am legitimately hoping/praying I can at the very least make it to the end of this year. 😂 I can attest that I’m also a person that gets a lot of flack from my coworkers for just coming in to do my job and going home to live my life. Last year, I told my coworkers I had a second job on the side of teaching, and they didn’t like that a single bit. As you said, I think their issue was that I just had other things going on for me, and they saw that as me being uncommitted to teaching. That’s an ironic thought by the way, because I was legitimately quite ill for 3-4 months last year because I just felt so chronically exhausted from the teacher workload. As soon as summer time hit, all of my symptoms and issues went away. I should have honestly not came back into the classroom this year, but I foolishly hoped that things would be different (I’m reminded of that old adage of insanity). Awesome video! And I’m happy you made the choice to leave the teaching profession before it sucked the life out of you. I plan on doing the same. 🙏

    Hi! I was subbing for about a year before the pandemic (year 2018 to part of 2019). Then stopped subbing when the schools closed due to Covid. I am in the paperwork process to start subbing again. Do I like subbing? No- I do not. I never enjoyed going to k-12 public school, nor do I like being there to sub. I have been an ebay seller for many years but my stamina for reselling is diminishing, and so if I just sub like two days a week I can have some steady income, pick the sub jobs/days I work, etc. I like that aspect. When I subbed, I tried to be perfect….now- I realize I can be more chill, and just make sure the students don’t kill each other. I would like to try subbing at the high school level this time around. What grades do you think are most manageable to sub for? I don’t know how or why any one would want to teach full time. Perhaps teaching college level would be a much better experience. The Students are paying to be there. It’s got to be an entirely different vibe.

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching 3 місяці тому

      Yes! When I subbed, I knew my job was literally to "baby sit" which made my life easier! The most manageable grades to sub for are definitely high school. They literally do their own thing and will not bother you as a sub at all. Middle school you ned to manage them more. But when I subbed high school, I was literally working on my business as I subbed the kids. Super easy.

    • @SongsbyCharleneApril
      @SongsbyCharleneApril 3 місяці тому

      @@HighVibeTeaching Would you go back to subbing (for High School)? If not, why not? How do you take attendance for High School? For some reason the idea of taking attendance seems like it might be the most stressful part! I have my orientation to get started subbing in a couple weeks. 😀 I appreciate you for sharing your knowledge and experience in regards to Teaching and Subbing.

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching 3 місяці тому

      @@SongsbyCharleneApril I actually went back to sub high school and middle school only. High school was so easy. I worked on my business as I subbed and it was excellent. So with the attendance, I had to use my big girl voice and call names off at the front of the room. I also made kids sign out of they used the bathroom because sometimes kids would ditch. But other than that, EASY

    I wonder where this whole "teaching is easy" nonsense coming from. I was student growing up, and I've often noticed how some of my teachers were stressed when facing children and teens soon-to-be young adults. Some teachers were very passionate about their career and stuck it in there. Others looked like after 2 or 3 decades of teaching was ready to get out of there. I rarely had teachers who really believed in their craft and would seek to help students. Otherwise, they felt they were failing their students. After meeting the late Mr. Pearce from my College Algebra, I knew I had to step it up, even though it wasn't easy, and I had to do it for myself with a bit of motivation from the talk I had with him about his teaching and my struggling grades in Algebra at the time. He definitely helped me think a bit more about math and to respect myself as a person. The main point I'm making is that some people who get into teaching are just rushing into their careers without considering every possibility, every future conversation with parents, kids, and their school staff. On top of paperwork and other work you have to be attentive to be ready for the next day and now there's things that shown that teachers can't even be allowed to be fair and honest with parents with troublesome children who refused to behave. I've learned that wherever you go, nothing is easy as one may think. It may start out depending on circumstances, but people often notice the difficulty somewhere. And these recent circumstances are difficult due to circumstances that some teachers and other members of the board are trying to make better but are being tasked by what could be some of the worst current members of the school staff and school board who care about passing kids no matter how ridiculous it is than holding people accountable for their mess-ups. Even if you could ridiculously pass failing students with problems caused by their environment, their own parents and their own actions, that alone doesn't resolve the problems within the child and the parents who are responsible for raising said child. That's like if you were successfully cheating to each grade until graduation. You got through school through questionable means, but you are still expected to demonstrate that stuff in the real world wherever you go. Especially college which prerequisites persists that you have to have knowledge of every subject that you've learned in school. If you don't know anything by that point, good luck relearning them.
