Love, love, love this! Great interview ❤ The points raised about the importance of parental themes in our literature and media were excellent. This is something that has stuck me for years. It's such a relatable and honest theme, and its loss and dismissal is strange and frankly sad. I miss it!!! Give me my angst dam**!!!!!!!
Thank you! And yeah, we're losing recipes
Yeah... imma need to pick this up. Never read from her before but now I will!
A good decision! I support it!
This was great!
Thank you!
It's our time sis! Many Congratulations ❤🎉❤
Enjoyed the interview and the truths he spoke to about the loneliness/ independence of adulthood and difficulties of being in a relationship (doing your own thing v seeing how you can be better by compromising with another person).
Delicious Monsters was fantastic, and I should reread it at some point. The pacing, multiple perspectives, narrative structure, etc. were all so expertly crafted. I was worried if I'd be able to finish it when I first got it because it was so big, but I tore through it in a couple days.
Same! I loved the dual perspective and the creepiness of the house. Everytime she went near it, I was just like, "noooooooooo"
Enjoyable interview. There's a definite specificity to rural v urban living. I've lived a couple different places (mostly small towns or suburbs), and there's even specificity there. The suburb I grew up in used to be farm country until fairly recently, and you can see that in the street names and local landmarks. There are still people who own farm animals because they were grandfathered in, and it's fairly common to see deer or geese in your backyard. Which is different from some other developments where it's more like a HoA.
As someone who briefly considered starting my own business, I appreciate your perspective on the challenges of being self-employed. I don't want to write full time, and being self-employed is definitely not a good fit for me right now, but I'm sure I'll revisit this info.
It is a lot to consider! And a big leap. I feel like we live in an age that tries to minimize the work and effort it takes to work for yourself, but it is definitely not for the faint of heart!
Appreciated Tatiana's insights into subgenres in indie publishing. I hadn't heard of LitRPG or anything like that before, but it is interesting to see anime's influence on the US literary sphere as anime has become an increasingly formative medium in many authors' lives
Informative interview. I'd heard of this organization before but didn't know much about the services they actually provide.
Appreciated the insight into your process and the advice
Hall's commitment to her writing routine is commendable. I'm interested in her fantasy romance because I'm trying to get into the genre. I haven't had much luck finding stories I've liked, but I hope my luck will change soon.
I think Rachel's book is a great place to start!
Thanks for sharing information about this new software
No problem. I genuinely think it's a great alternative to Google Docs, designed for writers.
Clare seems really funny. Something about her mannerisms reminds me of Robin Thede. I'm not an audiobook person, but since that's the only format for this story, I'll need to give the medium another try.
It was honestly like listening to a movie with the full voice cast! But I've learned that, for me, listening to the book has to be the activity. So, I'd recommend you pop some popcorn, grab some headphones and just relax under a cozy blanket.
Appreciated the points that marketing is communication and how to hone your message for best results
It really is! Marketing is about setting the reader's expectations and then meeting them.
Yes! I’m figuring this all out now for my project so this was very needed!
I'm glad you're figuring it out. And if you ever need any help, I got you!
"hallucinate over dead trees" 🤣🤣🤣
I mean, that's what it is 😂😂😂
Never thought green lipstick wouod looks o nice💚🍏💄
Thanks! My friend got me into bold colors and I just never went back lol
The knowing what is important in your story also just makes it clear for you. Great video
Thank you! And yeah, being able to understand and articulate the heart of your story is important.
Great interview, and thank you for the video!
Thank you! 🥰
Love seeing the shop under the video--marketing maven activated! 💚
Love this advice!
What about a story about a Black Female Slave Owner. Could be set in an alternative universe. Could be interesting and historically accurate....
hmm... So a black woman from Nigeria and a black woman from South Carolina experience the same racism? Melanin is not a identity. Melanin is a family of biomolecules organized as oligomers or polymers, which among other functions provide the pigments of many organisms. So, I'm confused. Are you both just unrepentant racialists?
Yup.
Right!! And here's a news flash: it's not exclusive to YA. I'm having a lot of backlash and I'm writing historical fiction.
I always miss these these days😢. But points were made!
Also my rule of thumb: if your book is meant for certain type of people and the mainstream likes it more, you didn't write the book you thought and you need to go an reevaluate some things.
"You're never gonna fill the shoes you're never meant to walk in." A mf word!
Facts!
Great discussion!
Thanks, love 💚💚💚
Loved everything about the conversation - I always read one-star reviews over the 5 star ones to pick my next read 😂😂- just got my copy of Supersized Bubble Gum and cant wait to get to chapter 3
Same! Tell me what you didn't like about the book so I can make an informed opinion lol. Also, I hope you enjoy your new book!
Loved the conversations happening in this interview!
Thanks, love! 💚
Great interview and topics on this episode frfr.
Thank you 💚
Really great interview, thanks for putting When Blood Meets Earth on my radar
"The reason why they don't include you in their stories is because they don't think about you... Start supporting people who think about you." A word, and Noble is very good at public speaking.
I appreciate the folklore collections on Noble's shelves
Agreed to all of this. She was amazing to have on. I love speaking with authors who live in their truth and aren't shy about speaking about it, because it needs to be heard. Because yeah, we gotta support the people who are building safe spaces and writing stories for us. Not just focus on the people who aren't.
1. I love these interviews and honestly seeing another Black Autistic Author obly motives me more to Finish My Book. 2. My Birthday was last week on the fifth (yes election day unfortunately) but on the upside I bought both of your books we are the origin and we are dying gods and I am really looking Forward to reading both of them.
Thank you so much! For watching the interviews and purchasing my books! I hope you enjoy them! And I'm glad this interview was able to motivate you. That's what they're for! So, good luck with finishing your book! And, happy belated birthday 🎂
@WrittenInMelanin thanks
I absolutely adore what was said about NK Jemisin. I've even seen booktubers on this platform give Sanderson five stars and rave about his prose and then say Jemisin's Broken Earth is a one star because of prose. Make it TF make sense y'all! 😂 Not to be a hater but I suffered through Mistborn and it's absolutely mechanical prose.
This 💯 it's the same with Malazan by Steven Erikson - they can read that ridiculously difficult (IMO) book, and love the prose but can't get through The Broken Earth - WHAT??
It's fine to be hater over here lol 🤣 because you're absolutely right - people pick and choose which books are masterpieces that require you to pay attention vs books that are unreadable, when the prose is similar in both but the author is Black in one. The dogpiling and diminishing ability to think critically and outside of oneself in the book community should really be studied.
🤎 I’ve been using ellipsus for a few months now and I like it! Thanks for introducing me to it. I can’t wait to test out the collaboration features
I was a tutor for 3rd graders and one student didn’t even know her alphabet. It’s so baffling to see how bad as a society we effed up. These kids are struggling and it seems like no one actually cares. I hear so much trash talk about what they can’t do and nothing being done.
That part! People don't want to help come up with solutions for the kids. Just drag them for not being able to do things. It's one of the things I struggled with when I was a teacher. Everyone believes that a teacher has time for individual lessons with their kid and it's just not realistic. Once you realize your kid doesn't know the alphabet or can't read or can't do basic math, that's not on the teacher anymore, it's on you as the parent. And it's not because they don't want to help, but because how are they supposed to do that? The solution has to be more than just complaining about the kids being behind and blaming the teachers for not being a 24-hour personal tutor.
I'm going to give it a try.
Let me know what you think of it! I used it for the first book of my novella series and it was a great experience.
🤎🤎🤎
Such a great conversation!
Thank you, love!
It's November 6, 2024 and I'm working on a romance novel for NanowriNOT. My goal for today is 1800 words.
I hope you were able to meet your goal!
This was great to listen to. Lockhart is so poetic as a person - great perspectives and input. I loved the segments on YA/Middle Age books and the Traditional/Indie industries, but all of this was a fantastic conversation and I so appreciate the podcast to learn and keep growing as an aspiring author 🫶🤍
Thank you! 💚💚💚 I'm so glad to know you're enjoying the podcast and the conversations! And Sarah had some great nuggets about YA/MG. I'm really glad she came on the podcast!
Enjoyed the interview
Thanks, love! It was great talking to Sarah 🥰
Awesome interview!
Thanks, love! 💚💚💚
I've been subscribed for a few weeks now but haven't had a chance to watch any of your videos until now. And this is truly divine intervention! This interview is so inspiring and really cleared my head of a lot of overthinking that gave me writers block for the past 3 weeks. I was set on YA but the ideas in my head are all middle grade, which never crossed my mind! Thanks so much to both of you! And much success 🌹 🌹
Thank you for subscribing! And writers block can be brutal, so I'm glad this interview was able to spark some inspiration! Shifting your target audience can definitely open up doors to new ideas, so I hope your story flourishes with them! May the words flow freely for you, love! 💚
"I want to live in this world where these facts aren't true." I think you summed up that mentality very well. It's tiring to see itplay out on repeat when we could be working to change things instead of avoiding the truth of what is happening.
I'm sorry for that librarian. That must be very disheartening to put in all that work diversifying the collection and for so much of it to be ignored.
It has to be. Especially when you know the importance of reading diversely, but the people around you don't know enough to appreciate the effort. And don't care to learn. I would imagine that has to be the frustrating part.
I’m struggling with creating nuanced character development and conflicts inside the first fiction I’m attempting to write. This video help me immensely. Thanks for the fresh insight! 💜🤎
I'm glad this video was able to help! I know it can be kind of daunting, especially with your first story. If you ever need more help or want someone to bounce ideas around with, let me know! I love helping people reach the best version of their works 😊
Haven't heard of Embers on the Wind before. Added to my TBR
I really like the Ignyte Awards and the Carl Brandon Awards. They're both awards for authors of color writing speculative fiction. I vote, nominate, and donate to these awards as able. There was the Shaded Choice Awards a few years back. It was a reader's choice award for authors of color run by 3 Black booktubers. Unfortunately, it only happened for a year, and the organizers weren't able to run it again after that.
I've heard of the Ignyte Awards. I have to look up the Carl Brandon Awards. I hate that it was only for a year, but how did it turn out?
I can't write YA. I'm old
😂😂😂
