THANK YOU! i've always had difficulty IDing reed canary grass by its seed head and leaves, but the collar trick is perfect!! thinking back on it, it didnt help that my first introduction to this plant was done by someone who couldn't ID it themselves.

The preserves are one of Cook Counties' greatest assets, and I applaud and support the work you're doing.

Good God I've just purchased a plant from my local nursery. Very disappointed to say the least. Need to keep an eye on my plant and advise the nursery to dispose of any other plants in stock.

Thank-you for this well paced and thorough explanation about Canary Reed grass and look-likes. I especially appreciate the comparisons to native grass and the other grass. I have struggled in the past and hope this year identifying Canary Reed grass will be easier.

Much easier to use this stuff for DMT extraction, cell walls break down much easier them mimosa hostilis , and it's free, grows everywhere, mind you you need alot more of it in weight the MHRB but with that being harder and harder to get it's just as good if not better as it's readily available everywhere in Canada and USA

It’s not invasive unless you were taught to believe it is. Ruminant animals love it and it also captures a lot of carbon as well as protects the soil from erosion and sun damage. We are the invasive species with our tiling and herbicides thinking we no better instead of listening to what nature is trying to tell us.

I don’t really understand why you guys keep cutting all the bushes and destroy the habitat for so many birds and other animals. You are clearing the forest just to make it look “beautiful”? I don’t see any ecological principles used by you and our taxes wasted. Maybe all these volunteers, instead of cutting down all those nice bushes can clean all the trash all over the forest? I’m so sad that our taxes go to waste. I hope more people are aware of what’s happening on the forest preserves and what you guys are doing is completely wrong.

That is a great plant i.d. As a native plant specialist you did an excellent job of showing the difference in meadow and wetland grasses and invasive species. I am close to DanRyan and see it here also along with Phragmites it is so prevasive it is hard to control . I have not been to kikapoo in a while so its nice to see it .but not the canary grass.My specialty is forbs and grasses not so much woodies but prairie restoration and i look for and identify endangered plants it is more of a passion than a carreer for me as i am retired.

I spend lots of time in the Palos Preserves. I would love to learn more about the unique geology of the area. Very atypical for Cook County, IL. It is truly a divine place.

This was a lovely presentation, but two things would be very helpful. First, when you look on any map, it says Spring Lake, not Spring Creek. (You mention the equivalence of the names, but it is in the middle of the talk somewhere.) If you put that into GPS, it actually would send you to near Itasca! And second... and more importantly... it would be nice to know that this preserve is almost inaccessible. All of the vehicle entrances are closed, so you must hike or go on horseback a distance of several miles. It would just save someone else who, like me, thought it sounded beautiful, from driving 30+ miles from Chicago only to find that there is no access. I had a nice little walk in a different preserve not too far away, but still....
