Fencing Arm Training
Wanted to film myself working on an arm for self-coaching. It's terrible looking at yourself, just a warning, but I should have done it a lot earlier. (Look at the knee, the occasional break in the wrist...) Also, health warning - if you do this - wear a mask.
The training format is warm up - bladework - footwork - bladework - footwork - bladework - footwork - then close quarters and ceding bladework to finish. The movie just has excepts from each activity, but typically I'd do ten of each blade drill.
The footwork involved using a tabata trainer set for four sets of 1.5 minutes with 20 secs break in between. This was my estimation of what an average DE was like: while DE breaks are one minute, you don't always go full term, and there's little breaks in between hits. As I said above, I did three sessions of such footwork. I tried to measure my pulse on camera but a bee attacked me and I had to fight it off. By then, my heart rate was down. Other times I've measured 147 bpm after footwork, getting down to 90 in a minute. In a DE the ability to recover is important.
Typically a whole session took 1.5 hours, and I'd do them twice a week, with two sessions of weights in between days and and an 9km run on another two days in the week. Plus four fencing nights, competitions whenever I could, and two lessons per week. I was getting ready for the Veterans' World Championship in Limoges 2015. A base level of readiness...Now I rest for a week.

This video gives a taster of what the camp was like. There's quite a lot of random shots of fencing mainly so that some of the attendees can see themselves on the piste. Unfortunately I couldn't approach this in a systematic way because I was fencing myself. The training was great - a lot of exercises to expand your repertoire of moves. Physically it was exhausting, but always a lot of fun. Thr...
Piasecki (NOR) v Jung (KOR) Olympics 2012 Mens Epee semis (1080p 25fps)

A close match, with nerves telling as both hope for a place in Olympic final. A few missed opportunities on both sides, and Jung makes a late comeback as he works out how to defeat Piasecki's feint-high-low lunge. Piasecki ploughs on with it, hoping for doubles, and wins with his AoE hit as Jung leaps back into a half-pike rassemblement stop-hit, hoping to avoid a double, but finds Piasecki's l...

Seth Kelsey (USA) v Ruben Limardo-Gascon (VEN) semi finals match - very close with a golden hit in extra time. Has some amazing lunges by Ruben, and a textbook stop-hit by Seth. As the second period was cut short due to inactivity, I took some liberties cutting out some of the footwork... and since I could analyse hits frame-by-frame I put in some analysis.

Daisy the Duck!

Daisy's mother was sitting on her eggs when a fox sneaked under an electric fence and killed her and most of her duck family. When I found them in the morning, her eggs were cold, but I put them in an incubator anyway. Only one egg hatched - Daisy! As a newly hatched duckling, she became a part of our family.

    I Like it, how did you connect the epee to the arm, is there a tight spring or something behind the guard in there for some give. I've always wanted to make a training device like the one in 'By the Sword' but yours's looks more do able. Look forward to reply.

    • @EastbourneEscrime
      @EastbourneEscrime 9 років тому

      Hi John. It's an oak branch with a hole drilled into one end. The epee guard is screwed into place with small screws. then - you'll love this - I put a foil blade in in the end. When it breaks just slip another in. Because there's no spring on the arm, the foil blade has pretty much the perfect amount of give. Also, it's just an old set blade I shove in, and I can twist it around to emulate a different blade presentation. Good luck!

      EastbourneEscrime so is it just stick the epee in the oak wood, how does the using of a foil blade replaces the spring?

    • @dudeofvalor9294
      @dudeofvalor9294 7 років тому

      If I understand correctly the foil blade rests inside the Epee guard, and sits nicely in the drilled hole. Imagine there is some wiggle room but the foil being a lighter blade acts as a spring.

    Piasecki doesn't control his distance -- elbow is far too close to his body. He has reach here and he's still getting caught up trying to parry L-Gs fleche rather than disengage and fully extend with a counter. L-G is doing a decent job of taking the blade before he engages, but Piasecki rarely uses his full length/extension this whole bout. Fun to watch though, L-G is fast and precise. Glad to see someone under 6'0 killing it in Epee.

    Freaking left handers... why is everyone I fence against left handed?

    • @TemplarX2
      @TemplarX2 10 років тому

      Because most people are right handed. So left handed people are used to training against right handed people however right handed are not familiar with left handed fighters and so they are at a disadvantage. This creates a situation at elite level where left handed people are over-represented. same with tennis and even boxing etc. In sport left handedness is actually a major advantage unless you play against another left handed person, where it is even.

    That was really great to watch! He took advantage of the fact that his opponent tended to counter-attack, and used to create different blade work actions w/ a flèche. Yet he caught on & score those 4 consecutive touches. Flèches must be used sparingly, I learned that the hard way....

  • @dublinbanjo

    This is an excellent demonstration of two contrasting, but both highly successful, epee body types and fencing styles. The taller right hander relies on the length of his extension to score most of his touches, whereas the smaller but more athletic left hander relies on fast footwork, blade contact, and aggressive attacking. The taller fencer is not particularly good at retreating, which cost him the match.. time and again he was caught flat footed by fleche' attacks. Really good fencing!

      The ref was watching from the other side which makes piaseki the fencer on the right. And fleshe attacks are all about distance, the grip type doesn't usually make much of a difference.

    • @homfencing
      @homfencing 9 років тому

      Ziad Khayat As far as the video POV, Piaseki's on the left...I can't read the names clearly, but I can ID the Norway leg graphic, and it looks nothing like Venezuela's. I'll argue the grip type, tho...pommeling a French grip gives you longer reach, and therefore less time to target ( at the cost of a weaker grip on the weapon). If both fencers are using pistols, the distance to target is the same (90cm blade + 5.5cm deep guard). if someone's pommeling a French, tho, there's 3-4 inches reach difference...which is a lot of time in epee.

    • @ziadkhayat7299
      @ziadkhayat7299 9 років тому

      Granted, but I find that the different grips tend to show more in blade work. French Grips tend to focus on disengages and avoiding blade contact, while pistols involve more parries, flicks, etc... The main way I see the extra reach come into effect is when both fencers are going directly to the others wrist, or foot touches. This is just my opinion, but I believe the main advantage for French grips lies in counterattacks, but if you're going to fleshe, the extra reach isn't nearly as important as avoiding their counterattacks or parries.

    Thanks for the replays with commentary! I just started fencing two months ago and I can notice improvement every lesson. It's very interesting to watch these video's and look at all the different techniques. It seems like Piasecki learns to recognize Limardo's moves over the course of the game, but is to late to catch up. Limardo seems lightning fast!

    While I'm no fan of Kelsey's fencing style, I do admire his ability to completely disrupt his opponent's fencing. When I first saw him fencing I thought that his movements were erratic and uncontrolled, but I've since realized that he's purposely screwing with his opponent's rhythm and timing, getting into their heads. There are many fencers with better technique than him, but he is tremendously good at what he does and I can't do anything but respect that greatly.
