With cities becoming denser, and land becoming rare and expensive, we as architects are increasingly challenged to design in urban infill spaces. Although designing within the unusual parameters can be difficult, they often demand an individual, sensitive response, which can often lead to innovative, playful, even inspiring results.
Large plots are not essential for lavish homes, but a thoughtful space planning can break the limitations of small plots making it breathable, inviting adequate natural light and ventilation. This narrow house is a unique example of going beyond the limitations. A home on a line by Nestcraft.
This plot has got a road in the front side and a retaining wall of 6 m average height in the back side and on both sides are neighbouring buildings. The plot was left out for so many years without having a plan for a building. The client approached us to design a 4 bedded home, we understood the bungalow has to be designed in such a way that it gets ample amount of light throughout the day and it should never offer the user a sense of clutter or congestion. This was the one and only need of the family and they were very sceptical about how to achieve the same in such a challenging plot.
The high retaining wall made of concrete, rubble and laterite bricks was existing before the house construction, this wall was taken into consideration as a backdrop for the home to treat as a side yard where the yard will be designed as a private garden opening from all of the spaces/ rooms of the home. The most negative feature of the site is transformed into the most unexpected welcoming feature of the home.
This wall and its landscape fabric is visually opening through the living space, master bedroom, dining space, upper living space and the other two bedrooms. The narrow width spanning 4.2 meters allows cross ventilation through all of the rooms.
