Wildlife & Fishing
Приєднався 23 січ 2024
I'm Nick, a professional conservationist and this is my wildlife and fishing video diary. I'm an average angler who loves watching and listening to nature, whilst casting a line from the bank.
If you love fishing ... I hope you'll learn something about how angling is a great way to connect with nature. To open your eyes and ears to the amazing wildlife found along the waterside. There's much more to fishing than catching fish.
If you love nature ... I hope you'll learn something about the wonderful hobby that is fishing. I'll explain how to fish; the different species, tactics, and methods used. I'll share the lessons I learn; as I try to 'get better every fish'.
In my day job, I'm the Director of Conservation Careers, with a Ph.D. in Barn Owl conservation and 25 years of experience working around the globe helping to save biodiversity.

Nice watch Nick, some 8mm cell pellets worked well for me, instead of cubed meat. Also stops fingers slipping off the meat fat on spool lip.
Thanks for the tip Dave. Do you mean when rolling bait?
@@WildlifeAndFishing No when targeting chub shallow, just like you did
Like the way you present the video, explaining what you are doing and why and also the wildlife descriptions are very informative
Thank you very much Mike
Another great video...I still have a subetteo set!
Thanks Ollie :) I think you gave us one also?!
Cheers mate tight lines 👍🎣
You too.
🎣👍tight lines mate
You too buddy.
Very informative video it’s a pity this river is getting ruined in places by the battery farms clogging the river with green algae etc hope this is resolved soon passed this river loads of times on my travels to South Wales to work allways stopped off for a look but never got round to fish it it’s on my bucket list since I’ve retired in 2020 as I live in north east England it’s a bit of a trek but who knows tight lines super video super hatrick and fish 🎣👏👏👏
Thanks so much Derek. If you're retired it's time for a trip to the Wye ... Worth the travel. Take care, Nick
Wow thats charging through. well done for taking the chance, good on you mate, really enjoyed this.
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for your kind words Clive.
Brilliant content mate as a very keen barble and chub fisherman it was a pleasure to walk mate plus loves the facts about the Falcon. Tight lines 🎣
To watch not walk lol
@@daz3434 thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed it buddy, along with the bird facts :)
Lovely video Nick. Captures the place and the wildlife beautifully.
Thanks so much Jim! Glad you enjoyed it.
Wow, what a catch and what a way to arrive at a swim. I know we went a couple of years ago together but did not catch one quite that big !
Thanks! I wouldn't be surprised if they don't go bigger than that also. We'll have to try again when the floods recede.
Hi Nick, great video. I fished your waggler swim on Wednesday with about another meter of water on and the chub are still there and on the feed albeit taking on the bottom so it was feeder all the way. Moved there as the Lucky Stones were pretty much inaccessible due to the height and pace of flow. Great to see you catching them on the drop and shows the benefit of being a bit flexible and trying out things that have worked elsewhere. Looking forward to seeing the next episode.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it. It's good to hear the chub were still down in that swim. I wonder if they drop back after the spawning period up in the rapids. I've also had Barbel in the lower field swims in the winter. Thanks for your comments as always and tight lines.
Visiting this Stretch on Monday.Very much looking forward to it but I have a funny feeling after all this rain it's not going to be looking this inviting ☔
Good luck David. It'll be different but you never know, it could fish well. I'm about 500m from it now... but not fishing this weekend.
I fished 3 different locations Monday to Weds this week and the fishing was the best I've experienced in the last two years that I have been visiting the Wye. If it remains steady or rises a bit whilst keeping the colour, I'm sure you'll be in for a treat.
Yep she’s definitely going to have a fair bit of water on just be careful on those banks and you’ve got to be in it to win it. Good luck and Tightlines mate hope your catch is plentiful 🎣
This stretch used to be full of Chub, you barely get a bite these days from anything. Not to far from here you get 2 Munties dive in the river every morning to get to an island, they spend the day on there until darkness arrives
Thanks for letting me know. That makes sense. I struggled for bites and the prints tie in with Muntjacs. Do you fish much locally?
@@WildlifeAndFishingI do indeed, I feel the Chub and Barbel fishing has declined somewhat but the Roach are now a good average and some big old Perch
Hi Nick. What size mainline and hook lengths are you using on the Wye?
Hi Martin. I use 12lb mainline and 10lb floro hook lengths for Barbel on feeder. Size 6 barbless strong hooks.
Hi Nick, this is Miles. Hope you have a good weekend on the Wye and the river is not too wild after the rain. I was there the last three days (staying with Helen).
Hi Miles. Helen showed me your 10 lb Barbel - lovely fish. I did ok thanks. A few Barbel and plenty of Chub.
Thats a really nice section of water, well done on some great fish, made my evening, all the best mate, and tight lines
Thanks so much Clive for your kind words. I'm delighted you enjoyed it also. Tight lines to you too. I'm back there this Saturday.
Brill really enjoyed that and live baits defo sought the big perch .imagine being a small fish yourself proppa scary it would be. Thanks for sharing 🐟🎣👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Is this stretch day ticket?
Yes it's on the Wye and Usk fishing passport.
@@WildlifeAndFishing after the other week i want to try again. Trouble is i live in Kent but i think it's worth the drive 👍🤞
Nice perch 👍🥃
Thanks Steve! Was a fun session out.
Great watching this video. Awesome day
Glad you enjoyed it Martin! Thanks for your comment
I've just had my first experience on the Wye this weekend and loved it. Looking forward to returning soon
What did you catch? Glad you enjoyed it. It's a wonderful River to fish. Worth a 2.5 hour drive for me!
@@WildlifeAndFishing a bit of everything really. Nothing massive but a big learning curve for me and my friend. He managed a 4lb 12oz chub on his last cast. We fished the Worcester Angling stretch below Kernes bridge. I fished the float. A new experience for me. Hoping to return in October 🤞👌🎣
Every time I go fishing I learn something new. Enjoy your fishing and good luck in October.
Well fished, good Barbel. I enjoyed watching the video, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your comment.
how deep is it on average like is there a big chance of ur line getting snagged if u let it sink too much, gotta know where the pools are at i reckon..
It varies in that beat. From 3-8 ft I reckon.
@@WildlifeAndFishing ye
Honestly it's the easiest river to fish in the country.. A 10yr old child could catch on the wye. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Or a 45 year old child :) it's a cracking river.
If you point your rod tip to the sky when trotting you keep more line off the surface . This enables you more control and contact with the float . I've noticed lots of videos where people neglect this part of the art of trotting . Fantastic wye barbel and an enjoyable film 🌞🎣🌞🎣
Thanks for the tip! I'll try pointing mine to the sky next time I'm out. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Nice video, well done. I've seen mergansers on the Severn, not in large numbers but, they're there.
Thanks Greg. In the edit I realised I said they were only in the Wye... Totally wrong! I think I meant to say I see them regularly only in the Wye. Glad you enjoyed the video.
What a stunning barbel. I know there has been a lot of news about the demise if the Wye, is the barbel population being affected, ta so much, great videos.😊
Thanks so much. It was a cracking fish indeedy. The pollution from chicken farms in the Wye catchment must be having an impact on the fishing.
Ps glad you enjoyed the videos!
@@WildlifeAndFishingit may just be a natural phenomenon on my local river wharfe we went from very prolific barbel fishing to a point where we really struggled and these past few years were back to it being prolific again. This is all within about 8 years.
Sorry to read that. I grew up fishing the Wharf and caught my first Barbel from Wetherby weirpool. I fished a lot at Collingham bridge as a kid for minnows and dace. Do you know if Wetherby still fished well for Barbel? I see it's day ticket now.
@@WildlifeAndFishing the wharfe at Boston spa is fishing really well for barbel. I've been 5 times so far this season and had 21 . About 8 years ago it went through a lean patch but it's amazing fishing at present.
I follow nic ! Now subscribed to your channel ! Nice fish 👍🥃
Thanks for the sub! Nic's a legend:)
Splendid stuff, I'm down on the wye in September, can't wait. Will be trotting (if conditions allow) was there last season for 2 days. Didn't disappoint. Fantastic Barbel for you.well done.
Thanks Dave and good luck in September. A great month to be on the river. Fingers crossed for good trotting conditions for you. If you see my previous video I was trotting the day before this one. It was Chub-arama.
Hi what stretch of the river Wye are you fishing please?
Hi Christopher. Thanks for your comment. I hope you don't mind but I try to keep the exact locations off UA-cam... What I would say is it's a beat in the Middle Wye on the Wye and Usk Foundation ticket (fishing passport). A bit of detective work would get you to it :)
Excellent days fishing, the Chub were hungry. One point I must make is where is your tether line to the bank, might sound stupid but I have seen one fisherman lose his footing and nearly drowned. Great session 👍
Thanks David. You make a good point about safety when using waders, especially in rivers. I've never heard of a tether before.
@@WildlifeAndFishing I used to fish the Severn at Coalbeookdale and always had a rope around the waste attached to a tree or ground spike when out in the river.
Lovely session, I had two days on the Wye last week. Really enjoyed my fishing. Just the one Barbel this time, I'll be back next year. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video and well done on your Barbel. Every one is magic.
Great session and I have similar pastimes as you enjoyed it thanks for sharing and u have another sub 🐟🎣👍
Brilliant - thanks Phil and I appreciate you subscribing! I'll check your channel out too buddy.
Which stretch was this please? Had a similar day at Fownhope on Tuesday last, great fishing the float standing in the stream.
Lovely video, many thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comments, glad you enjoyed the video. The stretch is a HDAA ticket one, but I hope you understand I might keep the exact location off UA-cam. Fownhope is probably my favourite best on the Wye and I fished it the day after this one. Caught plenty more Chub and had my PB Barbel at just over 10 pounds. Keep an eye out for the next video :)
Thanks, that has kind of confirmed what I thought and quite right to not shout it out. Keep the videos coming. You are not also a friend of Nic Bradley by any chance?
@@Leffebelly Ta. Yes, I know Nic well :) mat him the day after this session. You know him also?
@@owler578 Haha, I didn't realise you were that Nick who fished with Nic at Hunts Corner, Fownhope, etc. I'm Miles, I've fished with Nic recently on the Wye and met him on Thursday at Barton Mill when I was barbel fishing on the Avon. Not sure if its a small world or that we are all attracted to similar things.
Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks Harry! Appreciate it. Nick
What rod are you using
Hi Terry. It's a 13ft pellet waggler rod. Not the best for trotting ... but it does the trick.
Enjoyed watching that with added bird song and knowledge of wildlife as a bonus hopefully u upload more river fishing vids thanks for sharing 👍🐟🎣
Thanks so much for your kind comments. The river season opens very soon and I've a few videos planned...
Nice video, you know your birds. I was fishing Throop fishery on the Dorset Stour last year, and there are quite a few Cettis warblers there. One decided to sing about 6 feet from me in plain view. Nice Bream too.
Thanks Martin. I haven't fished Throop - was that for grayling?
@@WildlifeAndFishing No, they have some great Chub fishing there. But I have caught Grayling on the Hampshire Avon.
Careful with those forceps hanging there fella. A mate of mine got a pair in his chest after a fall few year back...nice vid pal
Ouch, that sounds painful. I'll bear that in mind for sure. Thanks for your comment.
I enjoyed the video but would have enjoyed it more without the music. I found it really intrusive. Your otherwise enjoyable and interesting video just didn't need it. Friendly criticism so please don't be put off!
Thanks so much. You're not the first to say it and I'm listening and trying to get better! Stay well.
Nick will give you the time of the day, hope to have a sesseion with him later in the year, very pleased for you, tight lines.
Avon is a great channel.
Well done nothing like a pb, great job guys, great video.
Thanks Clive!
Avon angling, Nic is a really nice guy, I foolow him all the time, and well done on your pb fish, good man.
He certainly is, and a great angler.
Hi there, nicevideo, and well explained, good job, new sub here mate, keep going.
Thanks so much Clive. Appreciate it.
Is this the nene near pilton/wadenhoe?
Yes George, it's down that way
I enjoyed the wildlife references. Great underwater Tench shots! 👍
Thanks Andrew. Glad you enjoyed it.
Music so annoying, dump it please
Yup - got it! Thanks Allan.
Great vid, Nick! 7lber 🤯
Thanks Barney :) Three sevens is a little mind-blowing to me also. Keep your videos up too buddy.
Enjoyable video and agree about the use of plastics 👍🎣🐟 have subscribed.
Thanks so much! Time to start using less disposable plastic in fishing maybe.
@@WildlifeAndFishing Agreed 👍
I thought I travelled a bit, but you have gone from the Wye to the Don and the Nene. Fair play.
I don't get many chances to fish these days so when I do, I don't mind a bit of a trip for some good angling. The Nene is my local river.
